I want her. She wants me. If only she didn't care what everyone else thought about our love...
Claire and Allison were old friends who hadn't spoken in five years. They drifted apart in high school, and Claire coming out of the closet and scandalizing their small town didn't help.
Then the night happened. The two former friends came together at a beach party the summer before shipping off to college for one incredible forbidden encounter. It was a night that fulfilled one of Claire's deepest secret fantasies even as it terrified Allison as she was forced to confront scary questions about her sexuality.
Needless to say, the night didn't end well.
Fast forward five years. Claire is happy, out, and living it up in the city. Allison is stuck in a passionless relationship with a guy who annoys her more than he excites her. And it's time for their five year reunion. A reunion where they'll see each other for the first time since that fateful night on the beach when everything fell apart.
They'll be forced to confront the ghosts of their shared past as Claire comes to terms with her lingering resentment even as Allison tries to answer lingering questions about her sexuality and discover who she truly is.
The past and present are on a collision course as two old friends turned one-time lovers come together in a whirlwind weekend to discover whether or not there truly are second chances in life and love!
When the closet door stands in the way, it's hard to love. While reading I started to imagine that Allison's behavior towards Claire looks like a dog before you that can't decide between pet or bite. The final chapter is very cheesy and might not be very realistic.
When I first picked up this book I was a little wary about reading about a closet case because usually I find that particular plot tedious. But I very quickly found myself wrapped up in the tension between Alison and Claire and had a hard time putting the book down! Though the plot twists were all heavily signaled miles ahead I still found myself worried about the outcomes. The last chapter is pretty cheesy and a bit inconsistent with the rest, but I'm not one to begrudge a good ending to a lesbian book. Overall a very enjoyable read.
Some of the ambivalence during a good part of the book was hard to take, but it doesn't mean it wasn't spot on. That's exactly like what it can be for folks who aren't following what society says they should be doing. It was neat to have a variety of different reactions to how lesbians are treated in our society. And the ending was more than worth it.
This well written book has well developed characters and a storyline that is familiar to many young people growing up in small town America. Fear holds many people back from finding happiness, especially if that fear is being labeled a homosexual. And there are definitely grounds for that fear, being ostracized, losing friends and/or family, and/or verbally/physical abuse. This is a story about a young woman who finally faces her fears and realizes that it really doesn't matter what other people think, it is her own life to be lived in her own way, a way of that makes her happiest. Very inspiring! Put this book on your must read list!
I spoke to Mia Archer about a year ago and she commented that she was removing the explicit sex in her older books. Now that's totally her right I don't have a problem with her choice.
However, I think she missed this book, it's only explicit in one tiny bit, but I'd say a third of the book is endless teasing. Mia may not want to write erotica, but wow she's really good at it.
If you're interested in a book with lots of sexual tension just right on the edge of erupting, this is the book you need.
Only read this because it was bundled with 'Summer Lovers' but I feel it was the better book. For some reason reminded of the Swedish movie 'Fucking Amal' which I guess is a good thing.
second chance love trope always good to read Claire and Allison old friends coming together after five years, the book cover only a weekend but so much is happening it's amazing and Allison's boy just couldn't take a hint.
