Men and luck don't mix for Sophie Reid. Ten years ago her father abandoned her and her mother for a younger, richer woman. The majority of boys her age ignore her. And now her boyfriend - the missionary she waited faithfully for over the last two years -- dumped her at the airport for a beautiful brunette he met in the mission field. Hurt and humiliated, Sophie vows to get even with Blake and get over him - fast. Desperate for a full-scale makeover, Sophie is determined to shake off the girl she was and become the woman she wants to be. Standing up to her incredibly snobby relatives and getting back into the dating game proves to be easier than she thought, but can she trust the men she dates? Paul seems nice, but Sophie suspects he might be in love with another girl, and she's not about to put up with that again. Sam makes her heart flutter, but what about his psychotic ex-girlfriend - is Sophie in any danger? And to top it off, it appears that Blake may still love her. But will she allow herself to trust him again? With the help of her best friend, Jacie, and her mother, Candy, Sophie comes to realize that the most important kind of makeover has more to do with love and forgiveness than with scissors and highlights.

I have no idea why I waited so long to read this one. It was a fun read!
Sophie ended up being a very likable character. She is sassy and fun. I love how loyal she is and that she wasn't afraid to stand up for herself. Her extended family was awful. I'm a firm believer that you shouldn't spend time with people that treat you poorly, even if they are family. Life is to precious to spend around mean people. Anyway, that part of the story was fun, seeing her family dynamics and how they evolve. I really enjoyed the romance and wish we could have had a bit more time with Sam and Sophie. Cute couple!
I have to say, this book totally made me homesick. I grew up in Utah (currently living in RI) and I could picture all the places in this book perfectly and it almost felt like I'd made a quick visit home. So fun to read a book that takes place in my hometown. Overall, this was just a fun escape.
Content Romance: Clean Language: None Violence: Very mild Religious: None, characters are Christian, but no preaching Read Again: Yes
If I never read the word Fresca again I'll die a happy woman. Also that these are the cure for all problems (oh boy), and the phrase "missionary work".
I'm still in shock that I spent 4 dollars to get this book, I feel robbed.
(Genre:LDS fiction/romance) A cute, fast read that my mother-in-law would call "fluff". This is a story about a young beautician (Sophie) that has been faithfully waiting for her missionary during his 2 year absence, only to meet him at the airport along with his new fiance. Sophie decides to get revenge on her now ex-boyfriend with the help/advice of her friend. She is also dealing with other personal issues from her father having abandoned her and her mother years ago for someone else and his overly critical and snobby family. I have read several other books by Guymon and her main character always seem to have a dysfunctional family and/or they come in contact with some real messed up individuals. Not sure why, unless it is her way to add some conflict to the story for the main character to overcome. Some of the "dysfunctional" characters seem a little too extreme for my reality, but then I intentionally live a sheltered life.
Makeover was a sweet clean romance that approached some pretty serious topics such as emotional abuse, abandonment, manipulation, and forgiveness. Sophie Reid hasn't always had it easy...and it's about to get even a lot more messy. She has been faithfully waiting for her missionary for two years only to be heartbroken, she was abandoned as a young girl by her father and yet still gets to be the constant punching bag of his family, and to top things off, now that she's finally brave enough to date, she's dealing with a psychotic ex girlfriend of a new acquaintance. Thankfully she has an amazing mom and best friend to help pull her through. I enjoyed this surprisingly funny, (despite all the drama and heavy topics), sweet read.
I love this series of books. This one is a fun quick read Sophie's ability to overcome her romantic faux pas is stunning. I love it when she says every girl feels better after a makeover. She is fun and spunky. The first time I read this book I loved it. It has become one of my favorites. Sophie is a strong character, through the entire story she deals with rejection in a positive way. She is one of those characters you root for from the very beginning. Sam is a classy guy, who just wants to find a sweet, caring woman to marry and raise a family with. He finds Sophie and is swept off his feet. Their courtship is full of twists and turns. This book is emotionally charged and will be fun to read again and again.
This book totally surprised me! I have a very bad attitude about lds romance writers. Only because I have never read one that didn't make me want to puke =) So now I have to change my tune! This author is every bit as good as Nora Roberts and she doesn't have any sex in it! It's so clean my 12 year old can read it. Her characters actually live the gospel without making them seem prudish or apathetic, they actually seem normal =) This book is a great light read, especially with Valentine's Day coming up!
Sophie put her life on hold for 2 years and waited for Blake to come home from his mission and propose, but when the day arrives and she is waiting at the airport her dreams are shattered. Her friend Jacie helps her with a 5 set revenge plan to get Blake back, but she realizes she doesn't want him back, but now he wants her back. She meets Sam, who saves her from her Father's side of the family and the makeover begins. Sam has ex problems of his own, Tess. great easy read that is fun.
Ok, I wasnt sure about this book because it is an LDS book. But I will tell you what. I was WRONG! I thought that the "mormon" things that are said in this book were so funny! I guess it was so funny to me was because I live here in Utah and all the things they brought up is exactly what happens around here!!! I suggest you read this book. I laughed and cried. More laughing than I have done in a LONG time!
Well I started this book when I was too wound up for sleep, and it didn't help me sleep in the least! I loved it immediately, and got right into the story. Sophie getting dumped at the airport by her missionary... I was there with her wanting to kill the jerk... And I knew immediately if I felt that strongly right off the bat, that this was a good read, for that's the way I judge a good book or not, if I can feel with the characters.. The feelings remained through the book, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I laughed so much, and felt I could relate to a lot of the crazy circumstances. It felt as if this were written about my family, for I could imagine any of it could happen to one of us, we always have the craziest situations... (So to me totally believable.) I loved all the 5 step programs Sophie and her friend Jacie were coming up with. (Go Jacie, love her, especially since she's the Cafe Rio girl!) I laughed at 5 steps to the perfect revenge... First, make him regret dumping you; Second, make him suffer; Third, make him jealous; Fourth, make a fool out of him; Fifth, live well without him. Nice idea when we're freshly hurt, though what I got out of book was things don't turn out the way we always want them to, but they turn out just like they're supposed to, and we'll be happy if we can just trust in that. :) And revenge is really all up to the Lord... And also the greatest lesson of all, we should never try to be anything but ourself either, and being happy with who we are counts for the most anyway. Though trying to look our very best, nothing wrong with that in the least! :)
I recently read and really enjoyed Do Over by Shannon Guymon. When finished I went looking for other books she had written and learned that Do Over was part of a series so I requested the other books from the library. When reading Do Over I didn't feel like I had missed anything but looking back now after having read Makeover I realize I was missing out on a lot of back-story.
Makeover was a stereotypical LDS fiction novel. A lot of fun to read but a little over the top unbelievable at times. I laughed, rolled my eyes, smiled, giggled and enjoyed myself while reading it. Great characters, lots of humor and fun and a nice big bow trying everything up nice and pretty at the end. One of those kind of indulgences where you can just slip out of reality and into the pages of a good book. From blue hair to psycho ex-girlfriends there is plenty to smile about while reading this one.
While I thought the writing and story line in Do Over was a notch or two above what was in Makeover I still thoroughly enjoyed this one and will be reading the rest of the series.

So, I'm just a gushy romatic, but I loved this book! Sophie Reid gets dumped by her missionary at the airport by being introduced to his fiance. She decides the best revenge is to live well with out him. She realizes that instead of being herself she had been morphing into the type of girl she thought he wanted her to be. That is over as she gets to re-know herself and meets a few new guys in the process. I laughed out loud through this whole book. I love how once Sophie figures herself out, she sticks to it. Wish I could have been like that at a younger age. A fun read, with lots of humor, and some real life drama. Plus all the talk of beauty makeovers (Sophie is a beautician who has "hair magic") has me seriously thinking about getting one myself!
This book was FANTASTIC! After reading a few disappointing books by other authors, I thoroughly enjoyed every page of this book. It was light-hearted, fun, cute, and romantic.
It's about a girl named Sophie who goes to the airport to greet "her" returning LDS missionary only to discover that his fiance is there also! He dumps Sophie there on the spot and her life is turned upside down. But the book is a wonderful tale about finding yourself and finding your true love.
It was also a great story about friendships. I really enjoyed the relationship between Sophie and her BFF Jacie.
I really enjoyed this book and I would recommend it to everyone.
This incredible book was addicting! I honestly couldn't put it down. I just had to know what happened next. I loved the story, the character development and can I just say how perfect the ending was? No one could have crafted a better ending to such a rocky beginning. My heart just went out to Sophie! I was crying with her every stumble and cheering on every success. Shannon Guymon has crafted a classic in LDS fiction. I want to buy a copy for my sister and all her friends! Truly magnificent.
Sophie Reid was dumped by her missionary boyfriend when he introduced her to his fiance at the airport. She was crushed, but decided to get on with it and make him regret the breakup. Then she meets Sam.
Sophie has a crazy family (parents divorced); Sam has a crazy ex-girlfriend.
I thought, at times, that Sophie was pretty harsh to some of her extended family members, but I guess they had it coming. All in all, a fun, entertaining, LDS story.
My daughter heard about this book from her cousin and begged for it for Christmas. I'm so glad she got it because I loved it. It was way different than I thought it would be. Who hasn't dreamed of taking revenge on someone's hair? A great LDS romance. I'll definitely look for more of her books.
Hello, cheesy novel. It started out okay, but went way downhill. That's what I get for giving the genre a chance...now I remember why I despise LDS fiction. Don't even get me started on the spelling errors.
Entertaining in a cliche-Mormon-love-story kind of way. Totally predictable, nauseatingly cheesy dialogue, but I guess I like that kind of story once in a while. Probably because I lived it once myself as a BYU student.
Delightful. One of the most entertaining LDS fiction books I have read since reading Jack Weyland's 'Charly' when I was in my teens & it didn't make me cry. I look forward to reading more of Shannon Guymon's books.
LDS fiction - light, clean, at times down right silly, story that neatly ties up in a happily-ever-after bow at the end.
If Ms. Guymon truly knows someone in the Alpine area who can work the hair magic that Sophie can, I wish she'd share the stylist's name and contact information! :)
Cute book! I loved the intense story and that things didn't happen too fast. I also liked that we followed a few different peoples love stories. It did get a little sappy for me at the end. But still pretty cute.
I grew up with a Mom as a beautician so if was really fun to read this. And it is true about all the talk of the town going on in the beauty shop! Fun story with real life issues. I liked this author and look forward to reading more of her books.
How can you not love Sophie? Well written, adorable story that will make any LDS girl who ever loved/lost/or waited for a missionary giggle. Darling book that my teenage daughter is now reading!!!!
The plot of this story looked good - but it was awful writing - totally way too cheesy, unrealistic, and immature for my liking. I couldn't even finish it.
I thought this book was cute. Sophie was lovable & a little over-the-top sometimes, but a fun character. I'm just sad that she's a fictional hair dresser, cause I'd love some of her hair magic. :)
