Stan Lee (born Stanley Martin Lieber) was an American writer, editor, creator of comic book superheroes, and the former president and chairman of Marvel Comics.

With several artist co-creators, most notably Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, he co-created Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, Thor as a superhero, the X-Men, Iron Man, the Hulk, Daredevil, the Silver Surfer, Dr. Strange, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Scarlet Witch, The Inhumans, and many other characters, introducing complex, naturalistic characters and a thoroughly shared universe into superhero comic books. He subsequently led the expansion of Marvel Comics from a small division of a publishing house to a large multimedia corporation.

I always think of the play Rhinoceros by Eugène Ionesco when I see the Rhino (R) in comics: my friends tell me that this very association puts me in the category of 'über-geek'. R is a character that could very well be associate with Theatre of the Absurd concepts: lack of meaning given great power with no responsibility (sorry uncle Stan). Aleksei Sytsevich is a member of the Russian mafia who undergoes chemical/radiation treatments that ultimately give him superhuman strength and durability. As R his 'absurdist' persona puts him in a wide range of questionable conflicts - there is NO WAY he should be able to throw down with the Hulk! Just giving you my 2 cents!

The first appearance of the Rhino!
The story line was interesting although they only somewhat explained the reasoning behind Rhino's actions.

In Spidey's personal life, Peter buys himself a motorbike! All of a sudden, he becomes this confident and smooth character (like he is when he is battling baddies).
Plus Peter finally notices Gwen Stacey after realising that Betty and he are unsuited for each other.

In the next issue we will finally see Mary Jane (who has been hinted at for quite a while now).
I'm interested to see what Peter first thinks of MJ!

This issue doesn't wait around by page 5 we have a panel introducing us to The Rhino as he heads toward the Mecca for bad guys.. New York. In a rather convoluted plot Rhino kidnaps Jameson's astronaut son who has been infected by unknown "space spores" and it’s down to Spidey to stop him. It may be the first appearance of The Rhino but we don't get any origin story; Spidey muses whether the costume gives him the super strength or "I wonder if he was bitten by a radioactive Sherman tank!" and the ambulance crew note that they are unable to separate him from the suit. Hate to be them when he wakes up.

Elsewhere Lee and Romita try to give Parker a new image as he takes a loan to buy a motorbike and Anna Watson suggests that Aunt May move in now that MJ (who we are yet to fully see!) has moved out. This one is a lot of fun and Romita & Lee prove once again to be a good team after Ditko's departure.

Musuh Spider-Man di volume ini adalah The Rhino yang bertujuan untuk menculik John J. Jameson--anak dari J. Jonah Jameson--yang berprofesi sebagai seorang pilot. Diketahui sebelumnya bahwa John pernah menemui benda asing yang menempel di tubuhnya ketika ia berada di luar angksas, sehingga ia harus dikarantina selama beberapa waktu. Dari masalah itu, kemungkinan ada elemen misterius yang bisa dimanfaatkan sehingga ia menjadi target penculikan. Beruntung, ada Spider-Man yang menyelamatkannya, meskipun J. Jonah Jameson tetap tidak suka kemunculan si jagoan bertopeng laba-laba itu.

Di sisi lain, ditampilkan pertemuan yang tak di sengaja antara Peter dan Betty Brant setelah Betty pergi lama entah ke mana. Di momen itu, sebenarnya Peter ingin mengungkapkan perasaannya kepada Betty tetapi ia selalu menundanya sehingga ketika tiba-tiba Ned muncul, Betty dan Ned yang malah terlihat lebih akrab. Peter pun pasrah dengan keadaan bahwa ia mungkin tidak ditakdirkan untuk hidup bersama Betty.

Nomor ini terlalu banyak percakapannya. Barangkali karena terlalu banyak topik berusaha dimasukkan ke dalamnya. Pertama, soal Mary Jane Watson. Kedua, munculnya musuh baru bernama Rhino. Ketiga, munculnya kembali anak Jonah Jameson yang dulu pernah diselamatkan oleh Spider-Man. Keempat, soal Peter Parker membeli sepeda motor. Terlalu banyak percakapan adalah ciri khas komik-komik lama tahun 60-70an dan membuat malas membaca bagi orang-orang yang tidak terbiasa.

Peter gets a motorcycle and Harry makes an appearance for like three panels. I don’t think I have much more to say when summing this one up 😂. Other than Pete finally realizes Betty isn’t for him. Finally.

An enjoyable tale that introduces Rhino as a formidable villain and sets up another adventure involving J. Jonah Jameson and his son. Really good stuff, close to the best of classic Spidey.
