Preachy with dull characters and sermons for dialogue.

Oh no this is number 3. I did not know that. I just wanted a mindless read off of my bookshelf. Now I must look for 1&2!! Funny to read a book written in 1997. How writing has changed! This is actually a lovely story of Jack, of noble heritage and Selina, a rich tradesman daughter, a "mushroom". Turns out Jack is a fabulous cello player and Selina's father hires him to teach her how to play the violin. Many side stories (I now realize were continuations of 1 & 2 and maybe 4& 5 for all I know as there are a lot of Ramsay brothers!!! Love of course ensues and all comes out right in the end!!

Excellent - Totally 5 *****! I loved the unusual beginning and the way the hero had a realistic problem he had to continually battle to overcome. Also loved the unique musical aspect woven through this story. The dialogue was excellent. Great book!
