Po knížce o jaru, létu a podzimu přichází Zima. Rotraut Suzanne Bernerová na obrázcích znovu vypráví své malé, vtipné příběhy všedního dne, které poutají a bystří pozornost, podněcují fantazii a řečové schopnosti, ale hlavně baví malé i větší děti. V předvánoční atmosféře se opět setkáte s některými starými známými a kamarády z předchozích tří úspěšných knížek. Přibudou další postavy, věci a zvířátka. Jen místo zůstává stejné: město s ulicemi, domy, s tržištěm, obchody, k tomu park a nedaleký statek. Podívejte se, co všechno se v Zimě děje!

I actually review all four books - Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall together, so will post the same review for the individual books.

All Around Bustletown - Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall - are a series of delightful wordless giant-sized board books that follow the adventures of adults, children, animals, birds, and even objects as they go about their day.

The illustrations are charming, bright and colorful, elaborately detailed, and with the definite feeling of an old-fashioned German storybook, not surprising since they were originally published in Germany. In fact, in German, these would be called Wimmelbücher, wordless picture books of everyday scenes that are chockablock with details and each scene is connected to the others by the setting. In this case, that would be Bustletown. The detailed images that are just teeming with activity are why these books have been compared to Martin Handford's Where's Waldo books.

What I found to be really nice about these books is that there are recurring characters from book to book and each of the two page spreads give readers a cross-section view inside buildings that is reminiscent of the back of a dollhouse, and a panoramic view of what happening in the outdoor images. Each book follows the same format - starting from home (as you can see from the illustrations below) and then on to the city with stops at a farm and garage, then a small fish store and a large train station, turn the page and you arrive at a school under construction across the street from a cultural center, keep going and the center of town offers all kinds of stores and activities, this is followed by a visit to a department store for some shopping and finally a visit to a beautiful busy park. Of course, everything has a different look and feel to it thanks to the changing seasons. And yes, there is a kind of sequencing to the books. In the Winter book, the school is nothing more that a foundation. In the Spring and Summer books, readers can follow the progress of the school's construction, until the Fall when it finally opens.

And though the four All Around Bustletown books have a Where's Waldo feel to them, the books don't have a specific task attached to them, like finding a hidden object/Waldo in all the hustle and bustle. Instead, these books promote not only observational strategies, but also introduce young readers to story telling skills. And my kids had no trouble following the recurring characters. Cornelia Rémi, an expert on the Wimmelbuch, considers them to be a form of playing, an idea I particularly like. So, since we had all four books, we placed them on the floor in seasonal order, beginning with winter.

Conveniently, the back of each book highlights and names the main characters, so that each of my kids could choose a character to follow through each book and then each season, making up stories based on that was happening and what the character was doing along the way. What appeared to be chaos on each page began to become more ordered as they made up stories and gave purpose to each character. That was really a lot of lively fun and since there are more citizens in Bustletown than I have young readers, everyone got more than one character to story about.

All Around Bustletown - Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall has turned me into a big fan these wonderful interactive books. Each one has eight panoramic pages filled with activity and people, and reflecting the holidays of the seasons. And based on my experience, they are guaranteed to keep kids busy for quite a while. And at a time when many of us can't go out and about the way we used to, maybe a visit to Bustletown is just the ticket.

These books are recommended for readers age 4+

Bustletown in winter--I love how each book goes over the same territory but is different in each season! Besides going through sequentially, it would be fun to compare spreads from the other books to see how each vista changes with the seasons.

Happy Winter Solstice!!

We received a free physical copy of this board book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Just one in a seasonal quartet, All Around Bustletown: Winter takes us on a journey throughout a cozy little town in winter, showing us a snowy day that turns the town white and all the people bustling about on their daily errands!

All around Bustletown is a unique extra-large board book without words (except on signs around town) that can be both a story you create yourself with endless possibilities or a look-and-find!
Or both!

The very back of the book shows several characters that are featured in the illustrated pages, stating their names and what they are doing, which helps prompt you to search for and follow them throughout the pages. You can easily make up and/or continue stories for the many characters shown throughout the book.

There is no end to the detail in these illustrated pages! You can spend a great amount of time absorbed in each page looking at everything there is to see or you can move quickly through the book following the characters!

One thing I love about these kinds of books is that you can 'read' it over and over and almost always find something new. There is so much to notice that you might have previously overlooked!

It's also a great interactive book for those kiddos that want to be part of the story rather than just listen to it! My daughter and I always have a fun time with these kinds of books and I've found that they keep her interest for much longer than a typical storybook so that's a big win from me!

I'll admit it. There are times, many times, actually, when I don't want to read to my kids. I know, I'm a terrible mother (insert crying/stressed emoji). While my older kids don't care if I read to them or not, the littles do. And that's what makes All Around Bustletown: Winter so appealing to me, because it's a picture book without any words!

I am a big fan of wordless picture books, and this series is one of my absolute favorites. Each book has the same page spreads, trees, buildings, etc., and many of the same people, but each book happens during a different season of the year. They also each progress as if we were on a walk or ride with a few of the characters; they all start outside the same little apartment building, and we see them on each page spread as they make their way downtown.

In winter, we see construction start on a new downtown kindergarten, then the following fall, we see its grand opening. In spring, we see a new romantic relationship blossom, and we get to see them appear together throughout the remainder of the year. We see store and library displays change, as well as trees and flowers.

On the back of each book are some characters and what their outing or intent is for the day, so you can then look for them throughout the book.

As well as the seasons, there is also a fifth book called Nighttime, which shows Bustletown at night, and seems to take place in October (based on the sign that indicates the opening of the kindergarten).

If you and your little one like look-and-find type books and books that allow you to glimpse inside of buildings (like cross sections) so see what's going on inside, then I highly recommend this series!

This wordless book brought back many memories of the Richard Scarry books I grew up with and then shared with my kids. All Around Bustletown: Winter is simply that - beautiful illustrations showing what’s happening in all areas of Bustletown, whether it be the at the skating rink, inside the mall or the town center, we see all the citizens busy going about their days. On the back cover there are illustrations of various characters which could be used to follow their day and readers can create their own story with these characters, look for various community workers and parts of a community or simply as a search and find. All four seasons are available and can see young readers enjoying these books immensely.

This is an oversized, wordless board book reminiscent of the Richard Scarry books I loved growing up. Each two-page spread displays a detailed winter scene populated by cartoonish figures engaged in a variety of activities. Certain characters appear again and again from page to page, telling visual stories of such things as traveling by bus, purchasing a Christmas tree, going ice skating, and meeting a friend at a cafe. There is also a good amount of environmental print present in each illustration, which provides further context about things like Christmas concerts, the construction of a new kindergarten, and where to find a dentist in town. Young pre-readers as well as independent readers will find this book very inviting, as it appeals to kids' sense of curiosity about the everyday lives of the people around them and it rewards their attention to detail with lots of little moments, many of which add up to larger storylines. The back cover of the book also gives names for many of the key characters, which I know will be important to my 6-year-old, who I'm quite sure will be sharing this book with her younger sisters.

This is one of those books that kids can look at again and again and make up all kinds of stories about the people inside the book. There are no words in the book except for the ones on the back cover. For instance, Bonnie the cat takes a tour through town, so kids can look for Bonnie on each page-spread. Or Petra is a bookworm, so they can look for Petra reading a book on the pages.

This is a search-and-find book reminiscent of the BUSY TOWN books by Richard Scarry that I grew up with or the WHERE’S WALDO books our kids grew up with. There is so much to see on every page. Parents can have kids find something new nearly every time they look at the book.

The scenes start out with people bundled up for the cold weather but, the grass is still green. Then by the third page, the snowflakes start to appear. The illustrations are well done and the intricate details are fun for parents to notice and then have your child find. Of course, I loved looking for Bonnie the cat on each page.

Beyond the search-and-find part of the book, there are also ways for kids to use their imagination. Kids can choose a character in the pictures and make up a story about what they are doing in Bustletown. They could also make up a story for each page based on the scene.

Kids will see characters baking, reading, shopping, walking, skating, and working at their jobs. They can look for various animals, a Christmas tree, a clock, or even a parrot. There is plenty to keep them looking at the pages.

This is the kind of book I bought for our kids to keep them busy during car rides or when they needed a quiet activity like a waiting room or church. The book is kind of big though, bigger than a normal-sized book and it is board book style with heavier pages. So, it isn’t ideal for taking everywhere, but it’s one you could tuck in the backseat pocket in your vehicle and take out whenever you are stuck in traffic or driving for a while.

Large picture-book-sized pages made of board book stock invite even the youngest of children to explore Bustletown. In these busy pages, the life of an entire village plays out. The wordless format lets each reader make up their own stories about the people in town. Some of the story arcs include an escaped parrot, a lost key and wallet, a cat on a jaunt around town, buying a Christmas tree, and heading to ice skate with a friend. It’s a delightful mix of Where’s Waldo chaos with real stories about a diverse little town.

A German import, readers will enjoy the distinct European feel of the setting in the book. Care was taken to be inclusive with the members of the town, including people of different skin colors, faiths and abilities. The busyness of the pages is at just the right level, making it a pleasure to find the character you are searching for, rather than a frustration.

Bright and friendly, this wordless picture book is great fun to explore. Appropriate for ages 2-4.

Additionally, it can be used like an I Spy type of book. On the back cover are some characters to find. Look to see where Bonnie the cat is hiding. Find the lost wallet and key. Search for Niko the parrot and discover what plans he has. This book would be ideal to purchase if you have travel in your plans for the upcoming months and need to provide entertainment during long travel times.

Everywhere in Bustletown people are getting things done, going to their piano lessons, doing their shopping, finding lost objects, buying a Christmas tree, skating on the pond, getting their car repaired, and tending to the animals. Everywhere you look there is something interesting happening and a story line to follow!

I love the colorful and detailed illustrations! Each page is beautifully drawn with fun little details to draw the reader in. I'm 37 years old, and I was fascinated with each beautiful scene!

It's so fun to search for people in the hustle and bustle of the scenery and follow them from page to page as their little story unfolds. Someone loses their wallet and keys, and through each page we see a good citizen trying to return the lost property. Anne misses her bus, and we follow her through the many streets as she runs after the bus on each page. Cara has an encounter with a baby, and through the pages begins to realize that she may need a new hat, so she goes shopping.

The simple stories of each person are full of humor and surprises as they find themselves in hilarious situations. Everything is so ordinary, but strangely fascinating at the same time. Everyday people doing everyday things, but they all have some little secret. They secretly hate their neighbor's music, or they secretly love wacky hats. A mysterious motorcyclist rides through each page until his true identity is revealed at the end. A girl chases her lost parrot, only to find him at the scene of a car accident.

This book is perfect for little readers to search for individual people and items in the pages!
