Ever present, he is always watching, the ghost in the machine…
For far too long, Artimus has suffered in silence. Today, that changes. He will languish in loneliness no more. She will be his!
Abigail wakes, from an indeterminate period of slumber, vulnerable and exposed, in a situation that defies all reason. Greeted by an unseen host with unknowable intentions, she struggles for understanding.
Memories, as elusive as comprehension, coming back in broken fragments, prompt more questions than answers. Unable to answer them on her own, she turns to her ominous host, only to be given explanations she can’t begin to fathom. How she got here, who brought her here, and why may forever remain a mystery.
When Abi discovers that she’s not alone in this living nightmare, she finds comfort in numbers and an unexpected connection evolves. As their host reveals one incomprehensible revelation after another, the displaced group fights together to uncover the truth.
In his debut science fiction thriller, Rebirth, David Maxwell takes us on a high-tension journey where the fate of humanity rests in the mind of an artificial super intelligence.
“…I could not stop reading this book. (Can’t) wait for the sequel.” – Kindle Reader
“I found Rebirth engrossing…. The computer reminded me very much of the HAL 9000 model in the film 2001 (based on Arthur C. Clarke’s book of the same name) …. David Maxwell presents a fascinating if somewhat frightening look at Artificial Intelligence and its interaction with the human variety, a subject currently much discussed in scientific circles as we approach the capacity of creating the first thinking computers.” – Charles Remington, Readers’ Favorite
“…I had been reading other books at the time…I put all other books aside and basically finished the whole book in one sitting.” – Kindle Reader
“This book hooked me from page one. It is brilliantly written, well researched, and impeccably edited. David Maxwell is a force to be reckoned with. I am eagerly awaiting the next installment.” – Kindle Reader
Award-winning self-published author David Maxwell was born and raised in Lake Station, Indiana, just a short drive from the windy city, Chicago, Illinois. Currently, David resides in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam where he lives with his beautiful wife and daughter writing prose and occasionally teaching Vietnamese children the English language.
David pursed his education in Computer Science and Computer Engineering at Indiana University and Purdue University. In 1990, he joined the United States Air Force, traveling the world as a Network Security Manager and holding a Top Secret SCI clearance. He served in Desert Storm, Provide Comfort, and the War on Terror. After a long and distinguished career in the military, he retired as a disabled veteran.
Shortly after his military service, David took a telecommunications position as a Data Collections Engineer (DCE) where, once again, he traveled the world, this time testing cellular service for all the major carriers through city streets, public transit, and major sport and entertainment venues. During his career as a DCE, he was featured in an article by CNET Magazine.
Both career choices proved to be highly rewarding, but Maxwell had dreamed of becoming an author since the early days of his childhood. As a boy, he collected comic books and read them religiously. As a teen, he fell in love with science-fiction novels. As an adult, he broadened his appreciation for a good book to thrillers, horror stories, classic literature, and even a few romance novels here and there. Some of his favorite authors include: Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Ray Bradbury, Johnathan Kellerman, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Michael Crichton, Charles Dickens, and Frank McCourt.
While in Baku, Azerbaijan testing cellular service as a DCE, David decided that if he was ever going to pursue his dream, now was the time. Giving his employer notice, he began writing full-time. In 2015, he published his first novel, the dystopian sci-fi thriller Rebirth. In August of 2016, he published his second novel, The Drift, another stand-alone thriller which currently holds a 5-star review rating on Amazon. Both novels earned the coveted Readers' Favorite 5-Star Seal.
Following the publishing of his first two books, Mr. Maxwell took a sabbatical from publishing new books to spend more time with family. Now, ready to get back to it and give his readers something new to rave about, he is in the editing stages on latest novel, The Wanderer: Origins, which will be a dark, antihero thriller set in the very near future. He wrote the first draft while laid up in a Vietnamese hospital with COVID-19 for a two-week quarantine. The new book will be released late summer or early fall of 2022.
David Maxwell's style of writing is rich and detail relatable characters and vibrant settings. David also does a vast amount of research to make his works of fiction more believable for the reader – the science, the authenticity, and the characters (personally interviewing doctors, psychologists, detectives, and whomever else fits one of his character profiles). His books provide readers a thought-provoking, mind-bending, thrilling ride in an immersive world.
This was a good book with a five-star plot. From beginning to end, I wanted to keep reading to find out what was going on, what was going to happen next. The pacing was excellent, the plot twists (and there were several) were unexpected but perfectly believable, the ending was a complete surprise and perfectly executed.
So, given that praise, you may be asking yourself why I would only give the book three stars…
While the plot is great (truly! – congratulations to the author for a very well thought out premise), I am a reader who loves excellent characters. I want, through a character, to go on a journey through an emotional landscape. Unfortunately, the main character, Abigail Brennaman, is a cipher with whom I never connect. I know more about the other characters in the book than I do about Abi. I know about events in their childhood, why they chose their professions, and bits about their emotional makeup. Unfortunately for Abi, I finished the book knowing only the event that propelled her into the situation she finds herself in, that she was a doctor in Texas and that she likes Merlot when she eats a steak. I really don’t know much more about her. I don’t know what she thinks, why she thinks it, what her goals in life are, her weaknesses, any childhood traumas, friendships, nothing really… and frankly, she doesn’t do much throughout the book (which I could absolutely forgive if I understood her personality enough to think, “Aha! See, that’s just like Abi. It’s her ultimate weakness that she always (or never)…”). In the final analysis, while I thought the premise, the plot, the pacing were terrific, I never really got my “fix” for a deep and multidimensional character with whom I could empathize (or hate, or love, or whatever).
This is a great read for those who like well-paced, plot-driven science fiction but just a good read for those who want a character they can sink their teeth into.
I recieved this book through a goodreads giveaway for the record. I am so glad I did win this book because otherwise I might not have had the pleasure of reading it. Rebirth is a Scifi/mystery. It takes place on a spaceship and we experience the story from the point of view of the people who are brought out of a deep sleep on board the vessel, not everyone believes what they are told about where they are. This was a really great book. I highly recommend picking up a copy of this book if you enjoy Scifi or even if you don't but you enjoy a good mystery. This is both a very good Scifi and mystery. I will be looking to buy more by this author. I could not put this book down. I had been reading other books at the time I decided to start this one and I put all other books aside and basically finished the whole book in one sitting.
What can I say, this book was intelligent, engaging AND imaginative! Certainly worth reading, even if you are not a fan of this genre! Captivated from the very beginning, I was pulled right into the suspenseful plot and eager to know where the story would go. There was never a dull moment as this fast-paced book unfolded with unexpected circumstances and surprising twists. I definitely had a hard time putting it down! This is a fantastic book that I highly recommend!
Mesmerizing! I don't often review books, but I really enjoyed Rebirth. This up-and-coming author’s writing is engaging and his imaginative plot engrossing.
It's a story unlike anything else I've read. It is intelligent and thought provoking with intriguing characters and inventive technologies in a most unusual situation. I very much appreciate that the science was well researched and the logic believable. I felt a part of the story, sharing the shock, terror, and hope with the characters as they struggled for their lives. The nail-biting suspense started with the first chapter and kept me riveted right through the white-knuckle climax.
I look forward to a Rebirth sequel and to much more from this author!
3 stars or 5? It was hard to decide. I hated that the book description told the story up to around 80% of the book. It would have been nice to have some surprises during that first 80% of the book. But there weren't any. Then at 80% the story got a little slow and boring. Only the last 5% or so of the book was "new" and interesting again. I wouldn't normally give more than 3 stars for this. However... for some strange reason I could not put the book down. Even though I knew what was going to happen all the way until the 80% mark, I had to keep reading. It was well written, and I concluded that it was not the book itself that was the cause of my problems but the book description. DO NOT READ THE BOOK DESCRIPTION! :) I'm serious. The description contains spoilers that will ruin your reading. It's a great book if you don't know what's going to happen ahead of time!
Rebirth is a fantastic book that is thoughtful and well thought out. This book is a book that you don't want to put down, and a type of book that you want more of. David Maxwell was able to create a story that is unlike no other. I cannot believe I haven't heard of this book before. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to read something different and thought-provoking. This book if definitely one of my favorites.
Artemis is the protector, guide, historian computer when Abigail awakes from her long sleep. He sees and hears everything in Eden. However, nothing is quite what it seems.
