William Hodding Carter II (February 3, 1907 – April 4, 1972), was a Southern U.S. progressive journalist and author. Among other distinctions in his career, Carter was a Nieman Fellow and Pulitzer Prize winner. He died in Greenville, Mississippi, of a heart attack at the age of sixty-five.
Good overview for middle school level readers. I wish there would have been more in depth explanation of exactly what “Honor” was and meant to Lee and how (I think) it tied in with the traditions and beliefs of aristocratic families.
It was interesting to read this book written in praise of Lee. I grew up in the North where I was taught, “Slavery is bad. The South fought to be able to keep slaves, so they were bad. They lost, so that’s good.” Robert E Lee was always just one of the “bad guys” in my mind. This book showed me a more nuanced version of the story (Lee was against slavery!) and is spurring me on to learn more.
