“Best Books of 1973!”—School Library Journal
“Outstanding book for young readers.”—Junior Literary Guild
★★★★★ “Great introduction to the War of 1812... but also a good moral lesson for boys!”—Amazon Review
Wibberley has a great talent for creating complex characters of depth and subtlety. The wilderness guide Pouch is a perfect example of this. We learn more and more about him as the story goes, and he is the rather unlikely source of some profound wisdom. This book, set mostly on the frontier in the area of Pennsylvania and Indiana, covers the period just before the start of the war of 1812. The older Peter Treegate of the earlier books appears, as an emissary to England trying to avoid war through diplomatic means, but primarily the story takes place in America following the path of Manly Treegate (nephew of Peter Treegate) and his younger brother Peter. As was the case in the earlier books, there is much good information about the philosophy and psychology behind the decisions of the combatants, especially the American Indians. Young readers will have a much better understanding of how and why the historical events unfolded.
