Desolate Era #5

Zifu Disciple

Rate this book
Fate had never been kind to Ji Ning. Wracked by illnesses and infirm his entire life on Earth, Ning knew early on that he would die as a teenager. What he didn’t know was that there really was such a thing as life after death, and that the universe was a far larger place than he thought.

A lucky twist of fate (one of the few in Ning’s life) meant that Ning was reborn into a world of Immortals and monsters, of Ki Refiners and powerful Fiendgods, a world where Dynasties lasted for millions of years. A world which is both greater…and yet also smaller…than he ever could imagine. He would have the opportunity to join them, and in this life, Ning swore to himself, he would never let himself be weak again!

The Era he was born into was a Desolate one, but Ning would make it his era.

The more I read this series, the more it reminds me of the coiling dragon. Everything seems similar. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Ji Ning's path on the Dao continues.
This time I was sure something would had turned out very different. I was a little impressed when it ended as it ended, but then I remembered something from the first book and went "aaah!". Well, if "aaah!" was correct I just burst the surprise for book maybe 32 or 37

Review of entire series.

One of the best progression fantasies, I've ever read. Just brilliant. It suffers from awkward and stilted dialogue and prose because of the translation, but once you get past that style...certainly one the most fun books I've read.

It's a bit longer than Coiling Dragon (which I'd recommend everyone to read first before getting to this) and the progression elements are done brilliantly. The action is near non stop and pacing never drops as we keep shifting gears.

Highly recommended.

This book does a lot more then the other books and was a bit more enjoyable to read. I’ve grown to be accustomed to the way this series is set up with a climax at the beginning and set up at the end. But I did enjoy how the main character had some suffering in this book but I still don’t enjoy how flawless the main character is and hasn’t really struggled at the moment. I’m excited to see what’s next.

First reading: 5 stars
Second reading: 4 stars

Not bad, but it’s not as captivating as it was when I first read the first 8 or 9 books. I wonder if it’s just due to the books not being great Re-reading material or if the genre novelty effect has worn off or perhaps my tastes have changed. Either way, will continue reading for now and see if the magic comes back.
