Harper has a secret... and it’s not that she likes girls. She has a rare and special gift: she can see how old other people will be when they pass away. With only one other person in the world who knows about and shares her gift, Harper is determined to keep her distance from everyone. Then she falls for Chloe… whose number is 16.
That means that Chloe doesn’t have twelve months to live. She doesn’t even have six.

We follow our FMC, Harper, who has the ability to see the age people will die on their foreheads. Naturally, this would be a little morbid even for the most optimistic of people. From the moment we meet her, we soon realize she is perfecting the ability to not get close to people.

This is all going just peachy, until she meets Chloe – the new girl in town who has the number 16 on her forehead. Harper hopes to be able to ignore this girl but quickly it is clear that the two girls have a crush on each other. (To my delight, this isn’t a coming out story – both girls are already out before the book starts.)

Through the book we see the ways Harper realizes she can’t deny the fact that she does care for Chloe, despite the number on her forehead. We get to see the way Harper and Chloe manage their slowly forming relationship and how they balance the differences between the two – Harpers pessimism against Chloe’s optimism.

Not only do we get to see the way Harper’s negative outlook of life is challenged, we also get to see how she learns that keeping people at arm’s length constantly is maybe not the best approach, especially when you are falling in love with them.

From the start of this book, I was expecting the end to be one of catastrophe, knowing that Chloe’s time would most likely be over and Harper would be left in heartbreak. But I was pleasantly surprised by the way this book ends, it’s quite satisfying.

This story actually gave me a little bit of nostalgia - so many cute moments between these two as they were discovering that they both had feelings for each other. It was also so refreshing that the parents were pretty open and accepting of the girls being gay. Especially Harper's dad, I just loved him to pieces!

Overall, it's a short and sweet story that's written well and makes for a great bingeable read, easy to knock out in one sitting.

Definitely recommend if you're in the mood for a quick and heartwarming sapphic romance that keeps you on the edge of your seat a bit, but does give you a HEA.

Perfectly written. 'Colorblind' is touching, deep, sweet, warm, and full of angst, too. It was a thoroughly satisfying read and left me with a book hangover. Despite it being a YA book it's applicable and relatable for any reader's age. I think this is Siera Maley's best book yet.

Recommend.

Adorable is easily one of the many adjectives that you can use to describe Colorblind by Siera Maley. This book is at times distressing all the while being heartwarming as well. I know, what a conundrum, but a glorious one at that. This book is a balancing act of sad and happy, no worries, though. You want to read this one. For any sadness that seeps out, there is a magnificent ray of sunshine that will definitely make you smile.

Harper is cynical, jaded, broody with a perpetual dark cloud over her head. Give her a chance, though, Harper isn’t just any teenager. This seventeen-year-old has a special gift, that can only be seen as really a curse. She sees the age of death written on the forehead of each person she meets. In the way that you and I see the date of expiration on a gallon of milk, Harper sees these hundreds of times a day on people. Can you imagine how awful this would be, seeing a toddling two-year-old and seeing the number 4, or a young mother and seeing a 37? Heartwrenching! Harper knows that no one would understand, and basically think that see had seriously lost her marbles if she told anyone.

Chloe Stephens is in one word, magnetic. This character is one of those people that, you know the type that everyone is naturally drawn to. They exude fun and kindness and you cannot help but love’em. She has the wisdom of ninety-year-old, with the adventurous spirit that only teenagers have and exuding positivity all along the way.
These two meet by chance, Chloe just moving into Harper’s San Francisco neighborhood, and become fast friends. Harper is super reluctant to allow Chloe into her life, but the charming spirit of Chloe is just too much to ignore. Chloe doesn’t beat around the bush either. She lets Harper know in no uncertain terms that she is interested in a relationship because she’s cute and interesting. This was so refreshing. No long pining away, Chloe knows how to communicate!

The book is with Chloe and Harper carving out their friendship and then their romance. It’s cute and fun, Chloe makes Harper see the fun side of life and let go of her constant doom and gloom broodiness. If you haven’t read this book, you might be wondering, Can Harper see Chloe’s number? The answer is yes, she totally can, and that my friend adds to the angst of the story.

Overall, this book is fantastic. I have enjoyed each of Siera Maley’s books, but Colorblind is easily the best of her work. The book has just enough tension to keep you on edge, and when it's finally time for the conclusion, Maley does a masterful job of finishing this delightful book. Highly recommend!

Is it a curse or a blessing to have the ability to know how long everyone will live + being allergic to chocolate? To me, it was a curse and a double. That was how Harper Locklear led her life, even though she had the rights to be super angsty ( unable to consume chocolate can do that to anyone) she wasn't portrayed as one.. A lil pessimistic but overall a pleasant enough teenager. Thankfully, Harper had a good relationship with her dad and a 22 year old bestie / confidant, Robbie in her corner.. Until Chloe Stephen ran in front of her car.

Agemates , neighbors and for sure the digits that Harper saw on Chloe kicked off their friendship after that first heart attack meeting. Chloe was the opposite of Harper - bubbly, adrenaline junkie, spunky, outspoken. Their differences caused some small issues and brought them closer at the same time.

Chloe had my heart at first (we shared the same movie genre) but as the crunch time approached, my attention + heart shifted to Harper. I shared her agony, I became anxious too. My panic level was on high, I really wanted to skip the whole thing and read the end. I told the book that I didn't want to cry - weekend was around the corner + I ran out of tissue.
I didn't skip and future readers should experience the same :) or :( ending without spoilers.

These girls were amazing together and the first time they exchanged ILYs was one of a kind 💕. To be in love at such age brought back great memories.

Why not 5? The blurb basically told the whole story :(

"Some things were worth aching for."

Harper and Chloe are my babies and I will protect them with my life. I absolutely loved this story, the characters, the plot, glimpses of past, fear of loss and a wish for a happier future with someone you love.
"We should make sleeping side by side our thing," she told me, her voice muffled by her sleeping bag. "Like, forever"
"I think they call that marriage," I laughed, my voice a whisper.
"I'm okay with that."

🏳️‍🌈Pride Round, GR Inspired Read-a-thon Book #3.

A simple and sweet story of two teenage girls falling in love, even if the hands of destiny and time are against them.

One of those YA contemporaries that you wished more people read. This book confirmed me I breathe just for the experience of reading f/f cute romances, is basically one of the ultimate sources of happiness for my soul. I loved this story so much because although simple, I was highly entertained and with a constant smile on my face. There is nothing that completely blows your mind but it does have a pretty great healthy teenage relationship, awesome parents, and commentary on living life without regrets.

Although I liked this so much there were somethings I found a bit annoying or just didn’t satisfied me completely. For example, how long it took Harper to finally cave in with Chloe and Deborah. I did feel she was a bit too petulant and mean with her dad’s girlfriend, but I could understand that it was difficult for her, is just I was so biased because I loved her dad. I also wanted more exploration on the whole numbers shenanigans and a bit more of action, so basically if you are looking for a very paranormal book this is not it, is rather slow.

Let’s talk about the romance! One of my favorite things, I was a big fan of how Siera developed their relationship, I would consider this a slow burn. The whole friends to lovers with a lot of sexual tension between them, I was literally squealing for every small touch. It was also very healthy in terms of openness and communication, well except for the fact that Harper wasn’t completely honest with her feelings but is understandable due to the situation. I also loved the banter between both of them, and how direct and cute Chloe was. One of my favorite couples in YA fiction.

Parental figures. Yes, they were quite laid back, but at least they were present, which is a huge accomplishment in YA literature. Especially Harper’s father was so precious and he tried. It was so heartwarming how after they confirmed their relationship he didn’t let them be without their door close. Also, the parents are super supporting the fact their daughters like girls, it was normal for them, which was a huge refresher from all the homophobic parental figures I come across with.

Lastly, this book let me feeling rushed to live my life to the fullest, without regrets. The exploration of how people end up regret living their lives just to satisfy others, and how perhaps teenage hope in love is not bad, yes a bit stupid sometimes, but they still have the ability to believe in a forever. here is when I realized I am still considered a teenager and laugh because my soul is certainly old
“Harper, people are not like milk cartons,” Dad signed out. “You don’t pick and choose the ones you think will last the longest without going sour. If it feels right, you just go with it until it doesn’t feel right anymore. And sometimes when something goes wrong, that doesn’t mean it wasn’t worth it in the first place.”

I totally recommend this for people who are looking for an unpopular YA contemporary that features a sapphic cute couple. Is also rather short and easy to digest. If you read it, I would love to hear your thoughts.

This is a captivating story and very well written. I found myself unable to stop reading despite being way too anxious throughout the entire book. I mean, you're waiting for someone to die at any time. Every outing had me biting my nails! There are some important lessons here that I'm glad i was reminded of. I won't be forgetting this book anytime soon.

This book is about a young woman of 17 who has the ability to know when people will die. Not a date and time, not how they will die, but just the age. Which sits on each person’s forehead like a tattoo. The only way she can get away from knowing is to not look at a person’s forehead, but it is quite hard for her to not look. Even though it pains her each time. Even if the information she sees is something like ‘84’, stamped on a young mother with two roughly six year old children with her (both of whom have death ages between 51 and .. . I forget now, 80 something?); or spotting a young woman roughly her own age with the death age stamped on her of ‘16’. Painful, grey world she lives in (colorblind, the title, comes, I believe, from the fact that she, and the other person she knows who has this ‘special gift’ see the world mostly without color – grey, bleak, filled with death).

That ‘16’, by the way, is stamped on a young woman who the main character, Harper, runs across. She has a great first meeting with Chloe – well other than the part wherein she almost ran her over with her car. And, oddly, she doesn’t look at Chloe’s forehead until the very end of their first encounter, when the woman turns away from her and Harper catches what she thinks is ‘16’. She calls out to get confirmation (to get the woman to turn to her again) and, yes, 16. She’s meet this great young bubbly happy woman . . . who is shortly going to die.

Heavy, eh?

Weirdly, the only time I stopped reading was when I had to pause for a moment to put food into the microwave. But that was my only pause. I devoured this book. It is very readable. It made me laugh, it made me teary-eyed. Great great book.

This book's blurb had me wary for more than one reason, but I'm really glad I gave it a chance. So worth it.

From early on, what caught my attention was the balance between the happy and the sad parts of the story. I'm sure anyone can tell this is going to be a pretty sad story, but I didn't expect the happy parts to almost entirely balance them out, in a way. Or maybe that was just me, but Chloe is the kind of person that can light up any room they walk into, and that's what her character did to the story. She was so incredibly bright and funny and full of life. (Her adventurous and positive spirit might even have been a little over the top, as I find it hard to believe that anyone could be that well-resolved at 16 years old, but I didn't really mind.)

I felt that things were a little rushed at times, and some really sad scenes were not as sad as they could have been because they were over quickly. I remember there was this scene that I won't spoil because it's really important, but I just felt tears welling up and it crushed me for a moment but then the story moved on. I'm not sure this is a complaint so much as an observation, as I was looking for a quick read anyway, so it's fine.

About their relationship, A considerable portion of the book was just them hanging out doing simple things together and being damn cute and I was totally fine with that.

Overall, I'd just say the things I didn't like in this book were greatly outweighed by everything I loved. Especially the ending. Obviously from the very first page all I could think about was how it was going to end, and I was afraid it was going to be unbelievable/cheesy/terrible, so I'm very glad it wasn't!

Couldn't put this book down. I started reading it on a flight from Atlanta to Austin and finished it on the return a few days later. The premise may sound morbid and depressing--and those aspects are certainly addressed in the book--but the love interest, Chloe, brings such a lightness to the story that it's hard to stay mired in the sadness of it. I loved the gradual development of Harper and Chloe's relationship, and how it was radically different from the typical "Does she like me? Could she ever?" line that runs through most f/f books. Chloe is so forthcoming about her interest in Harper, and that was refreshing and fun to read.
If you're avoiding this book because you think it will be too sad....just know that hope counts for something in this story.

i really this book! And i really like Chloe. I like her personality and the way she thinks and her optimistic characteristic. And i like how she was being so honest and blunt that she really like and interested in Harper. They have chemistry. I really enjoyed the dialogues and the banter went back and forth between two of them. Again, despite there are angst in this book, i really like this book and enjoyed so much!

But i need explainable what was really happened at the end. I kind of lost on how it happened. Question marks are kind of pop up above my head everywhere now. Urghhh

"Have you ever considered the fact that maybe the goal of life isn't to get through it as painlessly as possible?"
I've had this book on my radar for quite some time now, and I finally read it, and I will admit I'm a little disappointed. This books premise really intrigued me: a story about a girl named Harper who likes girls, and also knows what age people are going to die. This "sci-fi" part of the book is what intrigued me the most, but I feel like it could've been much more developed. Another part of the story that really intrigued me was that Chloe, her love interest, has the number 16 on her forehead, which is her current age, so Harper knows she is going to die soon.

The whole "knowing what age someone is going to die" is what I was most interested in, and it made this story so unique - but I had a hard time understanding how it works... Harper can see a number written on everyone's forehead, so she knows when everyone is going to die, but she doesn't know when she is going to die. (Like couldn't she just look in the mirror if she can see them on everyone's foreheads?) And it doesn't go further into how she can do this, she just says she can't remember a time when she couldn't, but of course I want to know why she's able to do it. So that part of the story ended up being pretty disappointing.

As far as the romance goes, Harper and Chloe were really cute together at times, and then at times it felt very unrealistic and insta-love-y. I mean, they meet in the most random way, and then they become instant best friends, and after only a few weeks of dating they are talking about getting married and having kids and shit? Like really? I thought it was so repetitive with Harper's inner thoughts and debate of being like: "I want to allow myself to be happy with her, but I can't because she's going to die." Nearly half the book is this repetitive cycle of thoughts, and Harper acts like a brat sometimes to Chloe and everyone else because she's afraid of the future, and it just got annoying after a while. I personally thought the ending was incredibly cheesy....

Overall, this story really caught my attention because of the unique and interesting premise! I haven't read many female/female romances, and this one had a gorgeous cover and an intriguing plot and I thought I would love it! Unfortunately, it didn't live up to my expectations and I had quite a few problems with it... but that cover is so beautiful though damn. (I also still have no idea why it's called colorblind... That title doesn't really make any sense...)

Review of ‘Colorblind’ by Siera Maley
Audiobook Narrated by Janine Granda

Harper is a 17-year-old girl who likes girls but has a rare gift: she can see the age people are going to die. Unfortunately, she can’t do anything to change it. She learned that the hard way, when her mother died at 41, the exact age Harper could predict. Harper keeps her distance from any emotional involvement with anyone, but when she meets cute and charismatic Chloe her well-constructed walls start to fall. The problem is that Chloe’s number is 16 and she has only this summer to live.

Continuing with my new year resolution to read (or in this case listen) stories out of my comfort zone, I chose to tackle a lesbian young adult romance. ‘Colorblind’ is told in first person from the sole point of view of Harper whose gift to see other people’s death age is more like a curse. No wonder her mood is somber and her life outlook is pessimistic. The only person who understands her is her best friend Robbie, a twenty-something-year-old guy who has the same talent. When she accidentally meets Chloe, she can’t help feel attracted to her despite the inevitability of her very close date of death. Will Harper risk her heart for a short summer relationship?

I really liked the premise of this book which I think suits perfectly for a young adult novel as there is a lot of angst and self-questioning about the meaning of life and how relationships work. Ms. Maley got the tone for both main characters right and the listener can feel how opposites attract and complement themselves. The narration by Janine Granda was very good, I found that she had the perfect voice for teenage characters and her performance of their feelings was spot-on. My only criticism is that both leads’ voices sounded too similar but because their personalities were so different the dialogues were easy to follow anyway.

The story in itself is original and credible within the world the author built. The threat of Chloe’s impending death keeps the listener on edge and the narration helps maintain the fast pace of the last few chapters. The plot resolution is very clever too. I’ve never read this author before because young adult fiction doesn’t appeal to me, but I would recommend to at least read/listen to one of her books. As this audiobook is available for free for the Audible Escape subscribers, I recommend not to miss the opportunity to give it a try.

Overall, 4 stars. An entertaining, angsty and sweet young adult lesbian romance audiobook. 4 stars for the story, 4 stars for the narrator’s performance.

oh my gosh.. such a sweet, wholesome read. the ending made me smile despite the whirlwind of emotions.

whilst i loved the concept and characters in this book, i did feel it was slightly juvenile in the way it tackled certain topics. i can recognise this is due to it being young adult, but this meant i found myself being drawn out of the story several times because of it.

overall a good read. it had an uplifting, memorable ending, it just lacked in plot and depth, i suppose.

(might contain spoilers)

I picked this book for a quick read, And didn't expect to enjoy it as much as i did because I didn't notice that it was the same author of Taking Flight (boo me) which is a book that I absolutely enjoyed.
I'm no good with reviews and all but It's been a while since I've had a really good read that is not fanfiction. The thing with Harper seeing age death of people is just super weird but I think it really add uniqueness to the story tho sometimes I forget that she actually has that paranormal capability. I love it's straightforward romance and It's an YA story with F/F that doesn't deal with homophobia y'all!! This story is so effing cute and sad at the same time, I had chest pains and butterfly in my stomach at the same time the whole ride. It was so good.

And that ending is A+ like, I was crying really hard whispering "please don't die" every time i turn it to next page during the last few pages. My poor gay heart can you imagine, when I reached that scene where Harper was asking for more time for Chloe and said that you can take 10 years away of mine something like that I was like "fuck take some of mine too".

It's a highly recommended book and author. looking forwards to your future works!
and yo y'all GO READ THIS ASAP! IT'S BEAUTIFUL.

Two thumbs up!

I was afraid that it would be a typical teen novel and that's not my favorite read at all plus it is my first book from this author. Now I’m so glad that I've read it. It was much better than I expected. Not depressed at all. Sad, yes but also with a lot of happy moments. This story has an excellent build-up. I was constant waiting for a tragedy that certainly was going to happen. This story has witty dialogues, is clever written and has a brilliant, original storyline. It is intense and intriguing with an end that makes total sense. I absolutely loved it and I can highly recommend it. Not only teenagers will love it but also the older readers. I am definitely going to read more from this author.

YAAASSSSSSSS!!!!

“I squeezed my eyes shut tighter and mumbled to Robbie, ʼEverything’s pointless. Everything.ʼ”
“I don’t know how to live with this. Not this, too. I thought I was stronger but I’m not.”

“Chloe was going to die, and she was going to die soon. And there wasn’t a single thing I could do about it.”

“But that didn’t make it any less impossible to just let go. I wasn’t ready. I wasn’t ever going to be ready.”

—“It’s not so bad, is it? Hoping?” she asked me. “What’s life without something to hope for?”
“[I] looked back down into her eyes. It was the first part of her I’d ever seen, and I wanted it to be the last, too, if this was the end for us.”

“Life would go on with or without Chloe Stephens, after all. It waited for no one. It never had.”

That ending... OMG!!!
I am speechless, crying & grateful for this journey..., absolutely restores & revives my faith & hope in true love!!

It broke my heart, pissed me the hell off & reduced me to tears, riding the emotional rollercoaster from the first word to the last in this story of choosing to suffer heart-wrenching sorrow, anguish, grief & a lifetime of loss & loneliness JUST to help someone else use the limited time they have left the in a way that doesn’t waste a day & moments of friendship, embraces, security, fulfillment, satisfaction, tenderness, peace, joy, longing, passion & pleasures of love!!!

…Just can't find words that can even begin to explain my emotions & feelings… IJS— I SO LOVE THIS BOOK!!!!!
