Is there such a thing as divine will or guidance...? Seta Sôjirô, stopping for a moment in mid-battle with Kenshin, may be beginning to think so. When Sôjirô made the fateful decision to ally with the monomaniacal Shishio Makoto, his family paid the ultimate price. But is the flesh of the weak truly the sustenance of the strong, as Shishio insists? Kenshin, whose Hiten Mitsurugi school places the protection of the helpless before all else, would surely disagree. In a world where might makes right only too often, what choice have "the wronged" but to wait for a savior? And when that savior comes too late...what then?

La historia de Soujirou siempre ha sido mi favorita, desde la primera vez que vi el anime hace más de 10 años. Es impresionante.
Este tomo es mi favorito sin lugar a dudas.

Kenshin got through the gauntlet and now had Shishio in his sights. The duel that was eleven years (since the fall of the Shogunate) in the making but all that build up was for naught as Kenshin was soundly defeated by the more savage Shishio. With Kenshin down, Saito showed us the badassery that enabled him to thrive again and again in any era.

*sigh* Why is there MORE unnecessary violence? Because seriously, I didn’t need all of this to show me Sorjiro’s tragic, horrible past (heads up for severe child abuse here) or just how messed up Mummy Guy is and seriously when did the guy get rabies and start biting people? 😬🤢 Ick. Kenshin’s going to need a tetanus shot after this—not to mention a new body once everyone’s done slicing his up!

I love the dilemmas of these characters and the complicated dynamics and questions raised between them and how Kenshin stands firm in his beliefs to the point it turns bad guys and inspires others whether they want to be or not—this is why I keep reading even if I don’t appreciate the violence levels that seem to keep going up and up with every volume.

And how this one ended…!!!! What?!?! Like, I KNOW he’s not dead, but how are they going to beat Mummy Guy?!?! I’m looking forward to finding out! (and getting confirmation that this character is actually okay…)

‼️Content‼️

Violence: fighting with weapons and hand to hand (PG-13 to R); injuries and blood (PG-13 to R); a child is abused and beaten by their foster family (R); burned flesh pokes through bandages; a man’s hands are cut off and then his head is sliced in two (R); a man beats a boy with a shovel (R); a boy beheads his abusive foster family (R); a man bites the neck of another and tastes his flesh/draws blood (R); a man is blasted in the chest by an explosion

Sexual: a woman wears a cleavage showing/very low dress; shirtless guys; a kiss

Drugs/Alcohol: guys smoke; a man drinks straight from a bottle

Other: explosions

Alright, so given that Manga is more of an ongoing story split into arcs that are in no way split up between volumes. I'm going to be reviewing story arc by story arc. This will then be copy and pasted throughout all of the 28 Volumes of the Manga. Also, let's get this out of the way. This is 1. A Reread and 2. Spoiler Warning I won't be directly recapping, but I will use points to describe my thoughts and feelings.

Tokyo Arc - Acts/Chapters 1-47 - Rating: 8/10
-A great start for a historical fiction. A bit on the nose, but I generally find with historical fictions you have to pretend that no one knows what time period you're talking about so it's nearly unavoidable.
-Great character work. Each Character introduced in Kenshin's gang are examples of how the war has hurt these people. This reflects on Kenshin as he was a key figure in the war that caused all these people that he growing to love, pain. Whether it's Yahiko who lost his parents to draft of war. Or Sanosuke who joined the rebellion and through political means lost his captain and the person he admired most. Or even Kaoru, who attempts to run a dojo in a time when Swords are forbidden by the government. All of these are monumental in Kenshin's redemption from the wrongs he has committed.
-My issue is moreso in how these conflicts come up. They seem very much villain of the week story. And most Shonens are when they initially start and I understand that. Some do it great. (Yu Yu hakusho) some do it terribly (Reborn) I think RuroKen does it OKAY. There are a lot of conveniences and Kenshin is the type of character who can nearly fix everything at any point because he's Kenshin and he outclasses the people they face.
-This arc is really split into 4 mini arcs. Beginning 6/10. Sanosuke Arc 9/10. Jin-E Arc 7/10. Oniwanbanshu arc 10/10

The Kyoto Arc - Acts/Chapters 48-151 - Rating: 9/10
-Phenomenal Arc. Kenshin must tackle with the concept of whether he can keep his oath against a man who is arguably his better. The man who replaced him as Hitokiri. Shishio Makota.
-The jupponganta, the villain group of this ark are all well designed and each one makes perfect sense why they would follow Shisho. Whether they love, respect or just want to kill him. Each one feels like a tough nit group. As for Shishio himself. He's one of those cool villains. I understand why he is and why he's so charismatic. But as far as being an actual villain. He doesn't do much. I think that's to his benefit. His whole concept is realistic in terms of, he has a time limit to how long he can fight. Which is why he created the jupponganta. But that doesn't make him still do so little in the story besides sit and wait for Kenshin to show up. My only real gripe.
-Kenshin conquers all of his fears and redeems himself completely towards the government by stopping the man that replaced him. Mastering Hiten Mitsurugi Ryu and finally allowing his friends to help him. It's a profound and beautiful arc that makes Kenshins character shine.

Jinchu Arc - Acts/Chapters 152-255 - Rating: 7/10
-Where in the last arc we saw Kenshin redeem himself in the eyes of the government. This is the arc where we see Kenshin redeem himself in the eyes of himself. When his Brother in law returns from China and threatens his friends and everyone he's grown to care for over the last 151 chapters Kenshin struggles with the reality of what murdering his late wife has become of Enishi.
-To me, there are three chunks, but they all work towards the same goal. The beginning.(7/10) The Flashback. (9/10) The End (5/10)
-The flashback is the strongest part of this. It was the missing piece in Kenshin's character and it really helps us figure out how and why he became who he became. He smiles constantly because his late wife wanted him to smile more. It's so sweet and tragic.
-However, the actual arc collects a bunch of random riff raffs to challenge Kenshin and his group of friends that also kinda have "beef" with him. But this and the end were pretty much the weak parts of this arc to me. The one dudes whole problem was that he got his hand cut off....and Kenshin DIDN'T kill him so...he decided to lose his whale-like mind and join a terrorist group. Two of the others had people they loved died. Who weren't good dudes btw, they were villains. But still...revenge. The other guy had some kind of clan responsibility but when he was defeated Kenshin just told him to go back to his family so it really wasn't an issue. And the final guy...well he didn't even have a beef. He just wanted to test out his mega unrealistic puppets. I'm talking Naruto unrealistic for a historical fiction.
-But all of those dudes at least had reasons. The villains in the final part were all just throw away villains that even Watsuki reveals himself were just throwaways. They aren't too compelling and giving the characters we have grown to love a final fight may have been appreciated by me the initial go. (because I was 14) I just found myself not caring whatsoever about these fights that lasted a whole volume by themselves upon rereading.

Overall, Rurouni Kenshin is a fantastic historical fiction centered around fantastic real life historical individuals. It's ability to write honest, true characters of the time period makes me remember them and I truly found so much more good in this series with the reread. The biggest issues this series has is staying consistent and opting to expose it's lack of authenticity for grenade launchers. Overall 8/10

This volume kicks off with Chapter 130: Soujirou's Past- A chance visit on a moonlit night.

Soujirou is, to me, an extremely disturbing character. Getting a look at his past makes it a bit clearer of how he became this way, and it becomes all the more horrifying.

I'll write more when editing mode hits me.
Have fun reading!

I love that for all the romanticism of this "Meiji Swordsman Romantic Story" Watsuki refuses to embrace a non-circumstantial set of principles that provides easy answers to everything regardless of the context. It's hard to walk the line of sticking to principles in that fashion without resorting to relativism, especially in a day when relativism is embraced in the name of open-mindedness and tolerance, but he does it. There are a clear set of principles at work here, but they are applied to each situation individually by the characters to determine right action.

The art is wonderful and the playout of the fight with Soujiro and the first portion of the showdown with Sishio-San are well worth the arc long build-up. Excellent character work on all three featured characters (Kenshin, Soujiro, and Sishio) and some nice subtler, short moments of insight with Sano as well. Wonderful comics work.

¿Kenshin contra Soujiro? Compro. ¿Kenshin contra Shishio? Compro más todavía. Si además viene con flashbacks que cuentan la motivación de los villanos, mejor todavía.

Rurouni Kenshin, Vol. 16 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next nine chapters (130–138) of the on-going manga series.

The fight against Himura Kenshin causes Seta Sōjirō to remember the day he met Shishio Makoto. He is overpowered by the memory of his family, who cruelly abused him. Shishio had given Sōjirō a sword, and when his family learned that he had been hiding Shishio, they tried to murder him. He killed them all and then left with Shishio.

Sōjirō becomes furious after the pain of his memories resurface and recovers his emotions. Due to his emotional state, Kenshin is able to defeat him with the Amakakeru Ryū no Hirameki. Although he loses, Sōjirō discovers the secret of Kenshin's technique and tells Komagata Yumi, asking her to pass it on to Shishio.

He then leaves the stronghold and Kenshin finally comes face to face with Shishio, who proves to be too strong for Kenshin. Kenshin is defeated, and Saitō Hajime bursts into the arena to attack Shishio, striking him in the head with his sword.

This tankōbon is written and illustrated by Nobuhiro Watsuki. The Kyoto arc continues as Himura Kenshin finally encounters Shishio Makoto. For the first time in the series, Kenshin is defeated as Makoto is proven too strong for him. It also gives the back story to Seta Sōjirō, which signals some importance for his character in future stories.

All in all, Rurouni Kenshin, Vol. 16 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems really intriguing and I can't wait to read more.

For me, Rurouni Kenshin was one of those things you didn't realize helped shape you as a person until you randomly decide to return to it years later.
After randomly realizing this, I bought a used copy of this volume off the internet, as Seta's backstory was my favorite part. I reread it and realized this volume is 1/2 Seta's story and 1/2 the first part of Kenshin and Shishio's fight, which was frustrating as the conclusion to the Shishio fight was also incredibly memorable, however its in the next volume.
Seta's story is still just as intense and heartbreaking as I remember, however I forgot how these fight scenes were more philosophical-debates-before-describing the-super-cool-move-I'm-gonna-use-to-kill-you scenes. Which is fine, I think there are a lot of hard hitting moments in those scenes, but it is the reason my mom gave as to why she doesn't like anime and manga. "Stop talking and just hit each other already" she would constantly say while we would attempt to bond by watching Naruto together.
A lot of this series still sticks with me years later. Reading about shell shocked samurai either negating their trauma in the comfort of others, or being devoured alive by it is still a memory I cherish.
Also it turns out Watsuki is pedohpile, so maybe don't give him any money.

Is Sojiro faster……THAN KENSHIN!?!? Volume 16 picks up right where the previous left off, in the thick of the battel between Kenshin and Sojiro. In this volume we get a solid backstory of Sojiro which I enjoyed. I know I probably should feel more emotion over it, but I did not find myself becoming sympathetic…but I do feel it was a very entertaining and engaging backstory. I always like when we fill in the gaps and get the reason behind a person’s drive. The fight sequences are excellent and really did have me on the edge of my seat. This volume was so jam-packed with goodness I found myself shocked that I felt it still did not hit the reader high of volume 14 for me. But another solid volume and as I read this, I think to myself that Bleach creator Tite Kubo truly could have learned a thing or two about keeping consistent emotional highs throughout a number of volumes back-to-back-to-back. (No offense to Tite Kubo intended) I rarely if ever say this would be a 4.5 star book but that’s what I feel like. Just a hair under 5 star. Excellent read and definitely one in which you will be wanting to discuss with fellow Kenshin fans.

I actually got so caught up in this volume I went ahead and onto the next one without realizing it! While not bringing anything new to the table, I wound up falling in love with Seta Soujirou's character. More of the same but done well, especially in the context of the narrative given his relationship to our titular big bad Shishio.
Onto Volume 17!

The rematch we were all waiting for.

You get another tragic backstory, it fleshed out characters we haven’t seen much of. It finally made me interested in Shishio Makoto, as all he did before was look cool and bark orders. I really liked the morally grey side to the story, where you could say if it was good or bad.

More amazing action sequences, it feels like the stakes keep getting higher and higher.

The biggest cliffhanger in the story so far. I swear I'm gonna skin the mangaka if this ends like the broken sakabato fiasco.

Today's post is on Rurouni Kenshin volume 16 by Nobuhiro Watsuki. It is 192 pages long and is published by Shonen Jump. The cover has Kenshin and Kaoru on it looking very cool. It is the sixteenth volume in the long running series. You have to have read the first fifteen in the series to understand the story. The intended reader is someone who likes historical stories, manga, and interesting characters. There is no foul language, no sex, but some violence in this series. The story is told from third person close following different characters. There Be Spoilers Ahead.

From the back of the book- Is there such a thing as divine will or guidance...? Seta Sôjirô, stopping for a moment in mid-battle with Kenshin, may be beginning to think so. When Sôjirô made the fateful decision to ally with the monomaniacal Shishio Makoto, his family paid the ultimate price. But is the flesh of the weak truly the sustenance of the strong, as Shishio insists? Kenshin, whose Hiten Mitsurugi school places the protection of the helpless before all else, would surely disagree. In a world where might makes right only too often, what choice have "the wronged" but to wait for a savior? And when that savior comes too late...what then?

Review- This volume has only two fights in it. The ending of the fight with Sôjirô and the first round with Shishio. Kenshin makes Sôjirô questions himself and we get to see his background and how he came to be with Shishio. Then at last the final fight begins with Shishio. Kenshin and Shishio trade verbal barbs before beginning. At first it looks like Kenshin is going to win then Shishio does a trick with gunpower and Kenshin is down at the end of the volume. Only one volume left in the Kyoto Arc and I just do not see how Watsuki is going to be able to rap all this up but I am sure that he will. More fights, more action, and more drama ahead!

I give this volume a Five out of Five stars. I get nothing for my review and I bought this manga with my own money.

Kenshin and Sōjiro continue their fight through much of this volume. Sōjiro begins to show emotion, which is the reason he is defeated- it also has the potential to save him. We see much of his past in this volume and realize how he became the way he is. Shishio gave him strength when he needed it most but the hope that Kenshin gives is what he needs now. I hope we get to see more of Sōjirō but I fear this will be the last we are of him.

We end this volume with the battle between Kenshin and Shishio. All of the previous volumes have been leading up to this point and we finally get to see Shishio fight. He uses a lot of flame and it appears that he defeats Kenshin at the end of this volume. We almost end here, but then Saitō rushes in to attack Shishio.

Not only was this an action packed series, but it was also full of great historical information. I learned so much about Japan's history by reading this series. Watsuki managed to throw in a nice amount of romance as well. All in all, it was a great fun read that kept me wanting more.
