First off this is the second part of a so far 4 volume epic tale. So if you are interested you need to start with the prior book "Star Mist" or ideally right from the series start although the first four books are not essential but give a lot of background.

That said, this were we go full-blown intergalactic crazy, with multiple galaxies, millions of ships, crazy advanced technologies. I felt I was back in the sci-fi of the 1920s-1940s. This is full-on Space Opera folks. For me, that is generally an enjoyable experience, but others may find the style overblown and immature.

Negatives for me, it's all very white, middle class, straight characters. No non-white characters of note, in fact, more aliens feature than people of colour. Also, all relationships are very heterosexual, there are even underlying suggestions that some of the advanced technology is only operable by male/female pairs. As noted this is a very 1930s style sci-fi novel, I could just do without the 1930s social attitudes.

On the positive side, this is not a blame aliens for all the crap happening scenario. The threat here is of human origin and out of a very human desire to play god. The author doesn't linger over mass space and planet born slaughter as I've found some authors do, if anything it's all a bit clinical.

Although I enjoyed the read, it was the subsequent realisation of its weaknesses which stopped me from giving it a full 4-star rating.

Not sure why the list of books show this book as coming after star fall, it really should be before that one, as far as storyline goes. Also, in the beginning of star fall, they claim it took them 300 years to eliminate the alien menace, but at the end of this one, it said it'd take closer to 400
Anyway, this is the story I was expecting with the previous book in the series, so good to see it does exist.
