The cattiness. The fights. The shaming.I don’t generally watch reality television, but I definitely don’t watch reality dating shows. Besides the fact that it’s completely staged, it’s a horrible depiction of people—women especially. Women are pitted against each other to compete for the affection of a man they “fall in love” with after a week or two. I call B.S.It is complete crap. So when my best friend, Koko, was hired as a makeup artist on the set of the most popular reality dating show, The One, I teased her mercilessly. She told me that if I didn’t stop teasing her, she would get me back. And she did…Which is how I ended up as a contestant on The One.
This book is different...unlike anything I've ever read, unlike anything I've ever written. Focusing on a love story, the reality aspect of reality TV, and the way media tries to put us in a box, The One is one of my favorite books of all time. Am I biased because I wrote it? Absolutely! Haha!
Danielle Allen only gets better and better. Reading The One was like watching the best of the best reality television shows unfold in your mind. Except--her writing is a million moons better than the screenwriters on those television shows.
Danielle creates characters that you instantly love and cheer for. In The One you meet Zoe, an independent, no nonsense, driven female, who isn't afraid to speak her mind. She's smart and has a deep love for poetry *a girl after my own heart!* I might have a small girl crush on Zoe, and I'm not afraid to let the world know.
Then you meet Julian. My gosh. I loved him. He was the one that all of the girls on the reality show were pining after, but he wasn't sleazy or gross at any point. He was actually love at first sight. And second. And third...and I LOVE HIM. The chemistry between him and Zoe is to die for. The way they feel for one another is powerful and moving. And again, poetry. I love poetry.
Danielle only gets better, as I stated before. This was the best read I've come across from her, and I cannot wait for the next one.
And I WISH THIS WAS A REAL SHOW BECAUSE I WOULD TUNE IN WEEKLY! GAH! So. Freaking. Perfect.
For the most part I enjoyed this. I've never watched The Bachelor, but I gather this book is exactly like that.
So while I loved the chemistry between Julian and Zoe, I hated that he kissed other women. Yes it's unavoidable on a show like that but I wanted him to step up and stand by how he felt.
Spoiler Free Review 4 STAR READ! Genre: Romance (Interracial romance)
'His smile grew with each step I took and that smile was everything. He was officially the most attractive man I’d ever seen in my life.'
After completely freaking out and not taking the Bar exam as planned, Zoe Jordan flees sunny California going back home to the east coast for an extended visit with her parents. Zoe's best friend Koko scored a job as a makeup artist on a prime time reality dating show titled The One, to which Zoe teases her mercilessly about. Unknowingly, Zoe has no clue that she will soon regret teasing her best friend and roommate. While in Virginia Zoe opens up her mail. More specifically, she opens an acceptance letter letting her her know she has been chosen to be a contestant on The One. Zoe is totally shocked and it doesn't help that Koko is just as shocked, LOL!
Needless to say, Zoe is none to happy about her entry into the show. It's only upon further inspection that Zoe sloooowly eases into the idea. Umm, further inspection being the fact she looked up the bachelor *wiggles eyebrows* Julian Winters and she becomes smitten with his poetic lyrics. You see, Julian Winters is a talented music producer for some of the most well known musical artist. He's gorgeous, talented and currently the most desired bachelor.
"Some of these women are already saying that they love him. They don’t know him to love him.” I shook my head. “That’s what I hate about these shows. Just complete bullshit. But I am intrigued by Julian Winters.". -Zoe
An encounter just before filming the show sets both Zoe and Julian afire, with a chemistry that can't be denied. However once Zoe steps back in to the house full of women vying for Julian she doubts herself and the connection she briefly felt with him. After all, she's one of many with just about everyone having set their sights and heart on being The One.
Fave line When Julian fixed his eyes on me, I felt it everywhere. I loved that he looked at me like he wanted to know me in every way possible. - Inner monologue of Zoe
Thoughts Holy freaking WOW! Very well played by Ms. Allen. I've never watched nor been a fan of the show The Bachelor yet I could only imagine the hot mess some of the contestants can be. Having so many different personalities in one house..my goodness not only that but everyone also having their own agendas for signing up. I truly think Danielle Allen did an awesome job! At one point she had a scene where girls had to switch places because I think someone's dress color was bad in the lighting or something to that effect. I was like DANG she is spot on. I've been on sets (talk show sets) and I have seen seat changes like that happen on multiple occasions. I mean just her overall creativity with the scenes for the show, the drama that ensues and then the behind the scenes drama as well. I find that she paid good attention to details in all of these things.
In addition the secondary characters kept the pot stirring with just about everything you can think of involving a group of women competing for one man. The love story was sweet, extremely heartfelt and romantic. Yes, the romance was definitely a 10! And just when you think it's going one way she throws a curve ball.
To buy or Not to buy? GO Buy!! Series: Yes, this is book 1 in The One (a two book) Series. Recommendation: I HIGHLY recommend to alllll romance lovers! Plot/Storyline: SHE NAILED IT! The story was filled with colorful characters that played their parts very well. Writing: Strong, Witty, Sensual even at times. Steam factor: High. On a scale of 1-10 I say 8 Zoe and Julian's chemistry was FIRE
Reading The One was like mentally witnessing one of the best reality television shows. Based on their initial conversation, Julian developed feelings for Zoe. Despite his best efforts, he was unable to fake it. He and Zoe had the sexiest chemistry ever. Their mutual feelings are strong and inspiring. being surrounded by a setting that is purely aesthetic was a test in the relationship they were training to build. I can definitely understand how a situation of this nature may bring out the worst in a woman, but Zoe never folded she was truly herself F production and their motives and F the cameras.
If you love The Bachelor, then The One is for you! Zoe's life was turned upside down when she walked in and saw her long-term boyfriend getting down with her best friend. Several years later and Zoe is still jaded by love. Her best friend is a makeup artist on a reality TV show called "The One". As a prank, her best friend signs her up for the show. Both are shocked when she is picked as one of the women for the upcoming season. Zoe is adamant about declining but does some research about the bachelor, producer/songwriter Julian Winters.
Julian and Zoe have a connection from their very first conversation. Somehow they stumble across each other around the house/property away from the other women/film crew, where they continue bonding over the course of the show. Julian and Zoe fit together perfectly, from their shared love of poetry to both wanting the same thing in a relationship.
Outside of the romance, it was fun basically seeing what a show like The Bachelor would look like as a romance book. It had all the drama one would normally see on that show, but obviously Julian and Zoe are going to get their HEA. This was a fun read, and I can't wait to read the conclusion to this duet!

This book totally sucked me in. I'm a HUGE fan of this author. Even though I haven't read all of her books I've absolutely loved the ones I have. They are full of sass and inspirational messages for woman and their self esteem, worth and respect.
I'm not even a fan of reality TV but I was captivated with the behind the scenes of the whole thing. Zoe was a truly inspiring woman, who stayed true to herself while being immersed in a totally superficial environment. I can truly see how this type of situation could bring out the worst in a woman, but not Zoe.
This book spoke to something I have always believed in. To just be yourself, be a good person, support the ones you love and stand up for your beliefs, and when you do good things happen, great things happen to you and those around you.
While to me this book had many messages within its pages, don't take that to mean that it came across as a "self help" type of theme, not so. This book was extremely funny and witty, I found myself laughing a lot and loving Zoe's quick wit.
A WOC POV!!!! I thoroughly enjoyed Zoe's narration, she was an incredibly socially aware, responsible, and independent woman. I also liked the "love interest (Julian)'s" character. I finished this in one sitting and I did really like it! However, I found the story itself fell a little short for me. I felt the dialogue didn't flow. I didn't begin writing this intending it to become a full-blown review, so I haven't really formulated a solid opinion. In short, I loved the characters, but not the whole reality-tv-show story-line; it just wasn't for me. I will be checking out some more Danielle Allen books this week! I look forward to reading some of her other pieces!
Zoe Jordan is going through a quarter-life crisis. She's not even told her mother, who happens to be an attorney, she's mastering her fight or flight reflex on monumental moments like taking the bar exam. Her life is a bit unrecognizable, even to her, when she unknowingly discovers her best friend, Koko, has signed her up to be a contestant on her least favorite television show, The One.
But unbeknownst to both of them, Zoe was actually chosen as one of the final twelve.
When Zoe finds out the bachelor is none other than Julian Winters, an attractive poet/singer-songwriter, she finds herself unable to resist the questions peaking her curiosity. She is determined to satisfy the craving of her mind while protecting her heart.
But Hollywood doesn't care about her heart or her mind, and neither do the mean girls who are there with the sole purpose to steal the man that captures Zoe's attention from the moment she first sees him.
Will she be able to withstand the cattiness, the manipulation, and open her heart to find out if Julian is The One?
Danielle Allen writes a strong, empowering female character that makes you want to fist pump while cheering and a hero that gives you an ending that is seriously swoonworthy in this reality romance.
P.S. I'm secretly hoping we get Koko and Bryce's story.
I received a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review.
Danielle Allen, were you once a contestant on The Bachelor??? This author did an amazing job of making you feel like you're getting an up close and personal experience, behind the scenes of one of America's most notorious reality dating shows. From the mix of contestants, to the scripted scenarios, the rules, the cheesy sneaky host and the drool worthy bachelor, The One had it all.
It's easy to see why Julian was so interested in Zoe from early on. I absolutely loved her! Much like the author, Zoe is wise-but-sassy, kind, inspirational and just so easy to want to call your BFF...even in a room full of catty women vying for the same man.
I'm so happy I picked this up and popped my Danielle Allen cherry. Her writing is very inspiring and her characters jump off the page. This may be my first but it won't be my last :-)
Danielle has blessed me with another book boyfriend and his name is Julian Winters.
The One is packed with stomach-flipping tingles. Her writing is flawless and engaging leaving me swiping my kindle for more.
I’ve loved Danielle’s brilliant storytelling since her debut novel, Back to Life, but The One is her greatest yet. Only causing me to crave more from her. She transported right in the middle of a dating reality show and I didn’t want to leave.
Julian is a swoon-worthy hero to say the least and Zoe is a smart and strong heroine. The One is a must read.
Is I liked it,wasn't happy about the Insta love thing but it was to be expected with how this was a version of the bachelor reality show but over all it was cute and sweet. Could have done without the heroine talking to herself so much did a lot of skimming.. The ending of this book was soooo sweet and had me on edge to see who he as going to choose.
I enjoy the read, the personality of Zoe was awesome, authentic, educated even when the girls were f... bitches. Reality shows are not what everybody thinks.
This book gave me so much feels. If I had to complain about anything . It would be that I wish this book had the heroine and hero point of view. Instead of just the heroine only .
I'm a massive fan of reality TV and the Bachelor Nation franchise, but I'm not blind to how cut-throat the world of reality entertainment is, so I thought Zoe's initial reservations about being a contestant were extremely understandable. The One offers a fairly accurate look into how producers try to manipulate the outcomes of dating shows, turn contestants against each other, and encourage women of colour to play into racist stereotypes etc. It's really twisted. The inclusion and commentary on these aspects warrants at least one star.
However, my dislike of this book stems from how flimsy and hypocritical Zoe's behaviour was. It was understandable that she wanted a distraction from the pressures of the Bar exam. But are we really meant to believe that someone as smart, self-righteous and headstrong as Zoe would commit to weeks and weeks of filming (and most likely post-show press) with doing little research beforehand?? Really?
Additionally, she spent most of her journey looking down on the process and other women on The One. There's nothing more irritating than a contestant who thinks they're above the whole premise of the show (boooooo, go home!).
Admittedly, some of the other contestants were b*tches. However, Zoe didn't bother to learn most of the other girls names or personalities. From a reader's perspective, this really hindered the character building and development because I knew next-to-nothing about them. They were 2-D. By the time I learnt something as simple as a name, it felt too late in the story to care.
Reality TV romances are known to move very quickly, so I had no problem with the speed at which Zoe and Julian's relationship progressed. My problem lays with the fact that I didn't think their 'chemistry' translated well into the text. Zoe talked about having a tonne of amazing chem with this guy...but I wasn't seeing or feeling it. It felt very forced, and Zoe's narration read as cliche and juvenile. The sex scene was hot though.
Not every heroine has to be likeable 100% of the time, but Zoe's hypocrisy was never called out or challenged. She was never placed in a position that caused her to reflect on how much she was contradicting herself.
I'll start right off saying that I'd like to give this book 10 out of 5 stars!!! Coming fresh off The Bachelor season finale I was ready to get my hands on The One!!! I couldn't wait! I fact I think I've been bugging Danielle for a few weeks now with how excited I was!! Let me tell you, I was BLOWN away!!! Right from the beginning Zoe was amazing!! She was sweet, sassy, kind hearted, but more importantly very sure of herself! She's my kind of female lead character! And then enters Zoe's best friend Koko and her interesting way of getting even with Zoe... Hello The One!!! I won't go into too much detail and give anything away but Julian, oh goodness my heart!!! He made the best of a situation of dating 12 girls at once even if at times it was a little crazy! There is drama, friendships that grow, and great chemistry! Through it all Zoe stayed true to herself and stuck up for what she believed in and Julian never wavered from what came out of his mouth. He was honest and sweet! I'm in love with Zoe and Julian and am very sad to have finished this book it was so amazing!! So the question is, can you really find love on The One? I guess you'll have to one click to find out!
I didn't know what to expect going into this story, but once I started, I was hooked. I literally read it overnight :) I am not a big fan of these reality dating shows, but Julian and Zoe had me changing my mind :) Zoe's best friend got her on the show as payback, but little did she know, this was the best thing to happen to Zoe. She's dealing with some insecurities regarding her life and got scared. She was mad at her friend, but decided to go through with it. She figures she can get picked and stay in the house for one day just to meet Julian and get voted off...That's where she was wrong.
Oh my..Julian? What wasn't there to love about him? He and Zoe have an encounter and the chemistry is off the charts. You can't help but root for them. The only thing is..its a dating show..11 other women are trying to get him too. So what happens when feelings become deeper between Zoe and Julian? You have to read and see for yourself :)
It had everything and once again Danielle did not disappoint!! It made me want to find The One <3 I can't wait to see what she has in store for us next :)
I had way more fun reading The One than expected. Our smart, feminist, heroine Zoe basically becomes an unlikely contestant on the popular reality show The One, that models itself after our own real-life gem, The Bachelor. This story is definitely a romance but I would consider it a bit of a parody as well. Although the romance was clear cut and palpable between Zoe and Julian, I got just as much of a thrill from reading about the other contestants in the house and all of their stunts.
I don't want to give too much of the story away but here's what you need to know:
Julian is swoon worthy and we get to see his and Zoe's connection build over a a short time period while cameras catch (almost) the whole thing. There's also a couple of impressively hawt scenes that I may have read more than once. Don't judge.
Ms. Allen is a feminist first and foremost, and I LOVE that about her. I love that she showed the prejudice we face as women in a society of 'reality' TV, and the crazy male-predominated jobs that seem to want to shove out the female gender. I love that she didn't skimp on the hard stuff and in doing so she fleshed out the story to a level that had me staying up until 2am reading just because I was so invested. I love how she took what might be considered a cliched premise and knocked it on its ass. (Because she did. She so did.) I wanted these characters to end up together. Their connection was tangible, and there were parts I cringed getting through right along with the heroine. There were also parts I thought I would combust. And the angst. I can't even. Seriously. The build up was spot on, executed perfectly, and I think Ms. Allen needs to teach a freaking class on sexual tension. Holy effing crap. Bravo. Ms. Allen knocked it out of the park.
The One was an amazing book. It drew me in from the start. Even though I don't watch reality TV, I was sucked in and hooked. This was read in one sitting, on a Saturday, in my bed. I DID NOT MOVE.
A swoon-worthy hero, a strong-minded heroine, and a variety of side characters that will make you want to laugh, scream, and probably throat-punch at least one of them. Oh... and there's a super steamy scene that will make a non-smoker want a cigarette! For real, I needed a cigarette AND a nap.
Along with the great romance, Danielle knows how to add in important social issues without distracting you from the story and making it all about those issues.
She is a one in a million author and this is a one in a million book!
Where do I begin? I absolutely LOVED this book. This is my first Danielle Allen book and I must say I'm a fan! This book had everything I look for when reading. Strong likable heroine ✔ Swoon worthy hero ✔ Great Plot ✔ Drama that keeps me turning the page ✔ And an unforgettable love story ✔
Seriously, Danielle's writing is fluid and engaging, where I was flipping through the pages wanting to know what happens next. I've never watched the Bachelor, but reading this makes me want to! I love her ability to put me in the scene and feel for these characters. You'll be rooting for the hero and heroine until the very end. Their chemistry was burning through the pages. Add this one to your TBR for sure!
I don't even know where to start! I LOVED THIS STORY SO MUCH! Zoe Jordan is my hero, she's strong, she's smart, she stands up for herself and others, and she is hilarious!
If you're a fan of The Bachelor and other reality dating shows, you're going to love this story. If you're not a fan, YOU'RE GOING TO LOVE THIS STORY!
And don't get me started on Julian Winters...that man is sex on a stick, with a heavy side of melt you into a puddle and make you swoon with his words.
The chemistry between Zoe and Julian is INSANE! And they're in a situation where he is dating eleven other women, so the drama is out in full force.
This book pulled me in immediately and I didn't put it down until I was finished with the story. Danielle's stories flow so smoothly and flawlessly. I was drawn to Zoe and Julian from the start. I loved how Zoe was always herself and wasn't intimidated into playing up the stereotype. I loved how Julian stayed true to himself and didn't let the show dictate who he ended up with.
It's so refreshing to read a great story without being annoyed by numerous grammatical errors. Danielle continues to reinforce why she has become one of my all time favorite authors. I look forward to seeing what she has in store for us next.
Have you ever been in a reading funk? Well I was and I'm so thankful that this is the book I choose to get out of it. It had everything you want in a book. Strong characters, great flow, a little angst, and a whole lot of goodness.
Zoe Jordan is smart, funny and true to herself. Julian Winters is handsome, deep and also smart.
Their connection was felt from the instant they interact. And we get to follow their journey and what a ride we take!! I would recommend this book to any romance lover.
This book was really good! Could be the timing for me but I absolutely loved it. From start to finish it had my attention, I didn't want to put it down at all! This author is new to me but will def read more from her. The "bachelor" setting was intriguing and how the MCs handled it was great. I enjoyed some of the secondary characters, which you can imagine there were alot of crazy ladies in that type of setting, all around great reading experience.
This was not the one for me. It was well written, but just didn't feel compelling. The mc's were a little too perfect. I ended up skimming about 60% of it.
It has been some time, since I have read a book cover to cover in a day, a working day (no less). This says a lot!
Why did I pick it up?
I picked this book up because of all of the 5 star reviews. I wanted to know if this book lived up to the hype.
Describe the book in 5 words
Page-Turning, Intriguing, Heartwarming , Gripping and Steamy
Who would LOVE The One
I think this book would appeal to most, especially those who love modern day romance stories.
Thoughts
It hard for me to put into words but reading this book felt, as though I was sitting in the room with one of my best friends and she was telling me her story.
The storyline unfolded naturally. I am unsure of whether this book is classified in the romance genre, but when I think of a romance novel this is a storyline, I would think of. The love scene is not raunchy, but one in that it capture your heart strings and make you feel a stir in places (maybe only me). The setting of the storyline being on a dating reality show felt very modern.
All in all, I truly enjoyed this novel. Five stars for me.
