How to Seduce a Duke

Rate this book
Why is the notorious Duke of Blackstone ruining Mary's well-laid plans to marry his brother, the handsome Viscount Wetherly? Every time she turns a corner, he is there—tantalizing her, teasing her . . . and the more she tries to ignore him, the more insistent he becomes. Mary knows she must make an advantageous marriage, but surely Blackstone is the wrong man for her. Isn't he? Blackstone is not about to let his brother become bewitched by some wily blueblood pretender . . . even one as deliciously tempting as Mary. But until she came along, no woman has ever resisted his smooth, well-practiced seductions. Could it be that he's actually fallen in love with this infuriating chit?

The star of this novel is its heroine Mary. She was just an incomparable: she was so funny, bossy to her 2 sisters, a little shrewish at times to the hero but he deserved it and I laughed at the efforts she took to try and save money. Mary was FUN !
Mary decided she wanted to marry the hero's brother, who is a war hero. She hadn't met the sexy hero yet but she saw his brother a couple times in the park and decided he would be perfect as a husband. This girl just made me laugh ! I loved the opening scene where she forced her sweet sisters ( they're triplets ) to masquerade as marble statues just so she could get a closer look at the hero's brother.
There were so many interesting and funny things in this novel; sometimes these things overshadowed the romance a little bit and that's the only reason I gave the book 4 stars instead of 5.
I loved the H too. He was so stuffy, sexy and vain and he kept trying to prevent his brother and Mary from seeing each other. Then he found himself wanting Mary for himself. It was so lovely seeing these two enemies filled with so much lust for each other that they couldn't help themselves. Then they both try to outsmart each other and end up getting married - Mary honestly thought it was a fake wedding and that she was just playing a joke back on him because she thought he had been playing a joke on her.
This was like a very romantic comedy of errors and the side story line about the triplets being daughters of the Prince was also entertaining. I enjoyed the eccentric old men and the very short plump old lady who had set themselves up as the girls' guardians. This was a refreshingly funny and very light-hearted romance novel. I can't wait to read the romances of Mary other 2 sisters. I am sure they will be a little relieved to be on their own now that bossy and miserly Mary is married and gone.

This was a fun book to read. Mary and her two sisters have come to London from Cornwall after the death of their father. While going through his papers they discovered that there is a mystery attached to their births. They feel that if they can talk to their father's friends, maybe they can discover the truth. The story that they hear stuns them - that they may be the illegitimate daughters of the Prince of Wales. Their father's friends are determined to help them find the truth, at the same time launching them in society.

Mary is the oldest of the triplets and the most practical. Though they have been left good dowries and enough money to live comfortably, she keeps a tight hold on the pursestrings, worried about what might happen to them in the future. She is determined to find a husband for herself, and seeing the handsome Viscount Wetherly in the park several times, has decided that she is in love with him. She just needs to find a way to meet him.

The book opens with a funny scene of Mary, having convinced her sisters to help her, disguised as a marble statue in the garden next door. The Viscount is a guest at a party there, and Mary wants the chance to learn more about him. Unfortunately, he is there with his rakish brother, Blackstone. An encounter between the statue and Blackstone results in a slapped face for him and a missed opportunity for her. A subsequent, more acceptable meeting, has Blackstone recognizing Mary and believing the worst of her.

Blackstone is very protective of his younger brother, especially now that he has a title and wealth of his own, plus the reputation of a war hero. Wetherly has said he is ready to find a wife and has settled on a woman he has seen in the park but not yet met. Blackstone is very cynical about women, thanks to his father marrying a woman who was only after his money and title, His opinion hasn't improved after seeing the way women of the ton pursue men. When he discovers that Wetherly's eye has settled on Mary, and that she's looking right back, he is determined to interfere. He sees Mary as out for what she can get.

There are sparks between Blackstone and Mary from the very beginning. He is determined to keep her away from his brother by whatever means necessary, and Mary is equally determined to have her chance with him. Blackstone indulges in some pretty deceptive ways to ensure that Mary spends time with him, ways that Mary discovers and reacts furiously to. He finds himself thoroughly enjoying flirting with her, making outrageous comments and getting her wound up. He doesn't understand how he can be attracted to the type of woman he thinks she is, but he can't deny that he is. At the same time, Mary discovers that she is spending far more time thinking about Blackstone than his brother. She's getting a lot of enjoyment out of trying to figure out how to wreck his plans and get her way. When a few too many glasses of wine cause her to lose her inhibitions, her actions really give Blackstone the wrong idea. It isn't until it's too late that he realizes just how wrong, and that he needs to do the right thing.

At this point, the attempts that each makes to get the better of the other just add to the confusion between them. Interference from one of her father's friends adds to it. By the time everything is sorted out, Blackstone realizes that not only has he judged Mary unfairly, he has fallen for her. The question becomes one of being able to convince her. Mary realizes that it was Blackstone who had had her heart all along, but can she trust him when he says he cares? I loved all the interactions between them, as they fought their attraction. I occasionally got a bit frustrated with Blackstone's judgmental attitude, but the way it would come back to bite him was always satisfying.

The story behind the girls' birth was really interesting. There are some things they discover through the book that seem to corroborate what they were told, but they are still looking for definitive proof. I enjoyed their father's friends, the Old Rakes club. Sometimes I wasn't sure whether they were more help or hindrance, but they certainly helped keep things interesting. Lady Upperton was also quite a character. One lead that they found appeared to lead nowhere, until something that happens at the very end of the book. I'll be interested to see how it all works out in the later books. This was a fun book to read. Mary and her two sisters have come to London from Cornwall after the death of their father.

What I learned: it's not interesting to read a book that has cardboard secondary characters, poorly developed interaction between the scantily developed main characters, and a not-really-interesting possibility that the triplets might be royalty. So what if they are--unclear how much of a difference it would make in their lives if these girls turn out to be the illegit daughters of a prince. The book reads more like an outline.

A forgettable read with a ridicilous plot.

About three triplets who are out to find the truth about their birth and who their father is.

They seemed to be under the delusion if that they could prove that the prince regent was their father they would be set for life. Er come again? Let me remind you that its supposed to be the 19th century. Being born outside marriage pretty much meant that you were considered a bit apart from polite society.

I doubt the prince regent would go "Capital! Three bastard daughters!" Being the case that their only evidence was a shawl :/

I also found the triplet idea too far-fetched I did some research and found only one instance where triplets were born and survived Then add that the tree sisters all have different eye and hair color...

I think this story would be much better without the added questions behind the Royle sister's real parents. I also found the first time Mary is seduced in the carriage a bit unbelievable - one glass of wine and she forgets all propriety and sleeps with the duke?

I was enjoying this book at the beginning, but I started disliking the hero, and the book went downhill for me fast. I ended up just skimming through the majority of the book. Not interested in reading the other two books of the series.

I enjoyed the premise of the book, even if it was far fetched. My big problem came with the ending and how a short explanation led to everything being A-Okay... uh, no... not so in real life. I thought Mary was stupid for storming out of the house near the end of the book because she thought Rogan wrote the gossip column. I thought it was stupid because by that time, Mary was already 'in love' with him and I would think that that would prove that he loved her as well... had he been the one to actually write the column. I just thought some things were contrived and the ending was tied up too quickly, whereas it seemed the rest of the book developed more fluidly.

I'd wish it could have been more of everything! Bit of disappointment but I think I'll try again and see if Book 2 will be better. I honestly didn't like the hero at all. I found Rogan a snob, mean-spirited & rude.

Thought the story started well, but just did not delivered to my expectations. It has some good humor. It seemed the romance was rushed and somewhat....extremely unrealistic. Needless to say, I had a lot of issues with the romance part of the story. Sad, because it had potential.

The story progressed pretty quickly and the love affair happened pretty quickly too. Not sure how convinced I was of it . What is gonna keep me reading this series is the royal mystery! That has me hooked!

This book was okay. It started out really slow with family history of just her family. Towards the middle end it got really fast paced, almost too fast paced and was really really unrealistic. It was kind of silly, the plot. I wouldn't read it again.

This sadly did not work for me. I've really tried to like this author's books but there's something off-putting about her heroines, too whiny? Know it all? I don't know exactly what, but so far, every book I've read, I've had a difficult time liking the heroines. Some of the heroes were nice enough (unfortunately not the case in this book) which makes finishing the book bearable.

This book was no different, I like the base idea, the whole the prince might be their father thing, but the characters were really hard to like. Mary is annoying, a terrible, controlling miser and a very easy target to seduce.

Didn't like the hero at all, he seemed arrogant and way too into himself.

I don't know if I want to continue reading the series. I think I'll shift to another author for a while and maybe come back later?

This book reads more like a summary than a story. There is no character development. Zero plot arc. Simply nothing to grasp onto. Set in the Regency period it takes great liberties with the protocol of the aristocracy. Men cannot simply walk up to a women and introduce themselves. Women cannot stay at a ball by themselves without a sponsor or chaperone present. A woman cannot accept a ride home from a man, at night in an enclosed carriage, alone. Three young women cannot walk across town unchaperoned. This was written for the 5th grade reading level. I cannot fathom how it ever came to be published.

Dukes do it for me. Grand, overbearing, somewhat rude, overcontrolling, always on top of their game, seductive dukes. I dare not overthink it.

That's not to say that there weren't plot holes the size of my romantic imagination and some pretty abrupt transitions but the chemistry was there. Mary was scandalously funny and Rogan could up, paint me white and call me a goddess. Dukes, they are my men.

A true romance

Are usually Review a book by the emotions it brings forth. This book has a little different twist. There are villains, but not villains like you would think of. The villains in this book tried to hide the royal birth of a set of triplets. The sister is mainly about Mary only one of the triplets. And talk about ups and downs and twists. And love scenes romantic and sensual. I can’t wait to see the follow up books
