Retired police chief Cassie Thomas isn’t looking for romance. She had it once and fate took it away. Now her quiet life is filled with her vacation resort and a few animals. Her biggest risk is taking in two foster kids each summer. She doesn’t expect this summer to be any different. Kathleen Masters cares deeply for the kids she helps at Fosters Inc., a privately owned Florida orphanage. Her biggest challenge this summer is to find a safe accepting environment to place four unconventional and maybe a little radical teenage girls. She has her sights set on Cassie and Lake View Resort. Unfortunately for Kathleen, convincing Cassie to go along with her plan might be the easiest part of the summer.
Becky Harmon was born and raised just south of the Mason-Dixon Line. Though she considers herself to be a Northerner, she moved south in search of warmth. Becky calls many places home but she is happiest with her partner, their daughter and the rest of their four-legged family. Romance has always been her first love and when she’s not writing it, she’s reading it. Her first book, Tangled Mark, was released by Bella Books in 2016.
3 1/2 Stars. This was a sweet book that left a smile on my face. This was my first by Harmon, and I like the way she writes. This is not the most exciting of books, it's a lot of every day life living on a ranch retreat. But it is a feel good book, and I enjoyed the read.
The story is about Cassie, a retired chief of police, who owns a vacation ranch retreat. After losing her partner, five years earlier, Cassie likes to honor her partner, by taking in foster children every summer. When Cassie meets Kathleen, one of the workers at a private orphanage, the attraction is immediate. Can both women maintain a professional relationship, or will their hearts get in the way?
The best way to describe this book is a laid back feel. As I mentioned before, a lot of of the book was the life of living on the ranch. Horses, dogs, guests and the kids. Even though there was not a lot going on, I got caught up in life on the ranch and enjoyed it. I realized I haven't read a lot of lesfic books that had people taking in foster kids. I enjoyed the kids a lot in this book, and found myself smiling often.
I thought the main character of Cassie, was great. She is very likeable, and you connect with her quickly. I liked Kathleen also, but she was very guarded. Harmon touches on Kathleen's backstory in foster care herself, but just barely. I felt like we lost out on a chance to get to know her character more. While the characters are attracted instantly, the romance was slower to develop. Insta like but not insta love. I was happy with that, but I wish we had less scenes with the characters thinking about each other, and a few more scenes of them alone together. I just needed a little something more, maybe Kathleen opening up, to make a stronger connection, then I would have enjoyed the romance more.
If you are looking for a laid back story, with not much angst, that will make you feel good, then New Additions is a good choice.
An ARC was given to me by Bella, for a honest review.
New Additions is a part romance and part slice of life story with a nice dose of human kindness and compassion. The main characters are nice people instantly attracted to each other, and linked by a common goal -- helping abandoned children. Their mutual attraction starts rather fast and comes off as a surprise to both characters. Not going too deep into their background stories, the author instead takes us to the quiet and relaxed life on a very nice vacation resort with beautiful surroundings and animals. The resort and the children in foster care system are, so to say, the third main character in this story. They are essential to the narrative, as well as the leading ladies and their developing relationship.
The relatively slow pace contributed to the message of this story -- all kids need stability in doing small everyday things through peaceful life filled with caring and kindness. Regardless of that somewhat slower pacing, the novel held my attention and met my expectations. Towards the end there was some well-done action and excitement, which conveniently closed the story.
I recommend this book, and am looking forward to other books by Becky Harmon.

This story suffered from lack of focus. There was a promising start to the romance of the two main characters, but after the insta-attraction and subsequent hook-up the direction shifted and the story changed into aimless meandering. Nothing exciting occured, the romance was put on ice for no real reason. Another plotline was introduced and the 4 foster girls (the promising bratt pack) mentioned in great detail at the beginning of the story were only introduced at the tail end. The whole thing left me unsatisfied.
I gave this a 4 star because I was left with to many questions. Like what did Chase really see that night. And what happened to the girls. Did they all be one a big family. I did like the storyline it was smooth and easy to read. I loved all the characters even Shelley and Dillon had me laughing. I feel like we are missing half the story. I hope we get a sequel. I would recommend this book
Still some loose ends I'd love to see tied up. What did Chase really see that night? What happens to the girls? I see an opportunity for at least one sequel!
This was a nice story. Very well developed plot. Description of the settings made me feel like I was there. Chase was an adorable little boy. Greg was equally a very good brother. Cassie and Kathleen had tons of chemistry and their relationship buildup was very well done.
Ok so I read them out of sequence but it didn’t matter in the slightest loved them both. The only slight gripe I have is that it wasn’t long enough and I felt it was slightly rushed at the end, and some relationships could have more more depth and detail.Still loved it though perhaps another book or two in the series
I didn't care for this book at all. First what is the point of making the characters instantly fall in love if your going to have them do nothing but gush about each other for half the novel? Second the actual plot of the novel revolving the foster children didn't even occur until your 70 percent through the book and the supposed climax of the novel just felt tacked on and forced.
A beautiful book, a story with realistic characters and so many breath taking emotions. The story really moved me making me smile, cry and worry. I wanted to continue reading it without stop. Just brilliant
I really enjoy this book and Becky Harmony writing style. There is low angst. Strong chemistry taking off like a firecracker then slows down while they figure everything out. It is definitely in my reread pile.
I loved New Additions. A joy to read. It's nice to finally read a book that is not full of lesbian drama. Reminds us that love is happy. I would like to hear how the kids in the story are doing. Any chance of a Book II?
I am a lover of a playful sarcastic sense of humor. I was LMAO when Kathleen asked Cassie, "Have you seen the length of my legs?" And Cassie's eventual reply was, "Put your hand on my shoulder, and I'll support you until your stubby little limbs reach the ground."
