The main event sees a pro Government registration and supervision of heroes side led by Iron Man being opposed by the Captain America led side, set in Nick Fury has gone AWOL, the Avengers don't trust SHIELD and a post mutant Genocide X-Men are virtually under house arrest! It's a well planned event, but it does feel like the big moments were agreed in advance and the plot and characterisations inserted after, it lacks fluidity. It does tick all the boxes for excitement and drama though. So what on Earth possessed me to read every comic book of the event? Curiosity, I suppose, outside of the first reading, I don't read all the crossover books of a Summer event. The Marvel Civil War supporting stories are New Avengers, Civil War Frontline, numerous one-shots, Amazing Spider Man, Fantastic Four, Moon Knight, Heroes for Hire, Punisher, Ms Marvel, The Thunderbolts, Captain America, Iron man, Blade, the Young Avengers and the Runaways, the Winter Soldier, Wolverine and the Daily Bugle. Jam packed with the blurring of lines and duplicity by the Government and Iron Man's forces, the rebranding of many super villains, the splitting up of a major super team, the trials of the Black Panther and his new wife Storm of the X-Men and more . With magnificent and often heart rending pieces of work by 'Babylon 5' creator J Michael Straczynski's Spider-Man and Fantastic Four; top marks also to Reginald Hudlin's Black Panther and Matt Fraction's Invincible Iron Man to name a few of the shining stars. 7.5 out of 12, strong Three Star read overall. 2023 read
The event book of all (Marvel) event books, resetting the stage for all their titles mid-‘00s, the story still holds up 18 years later. Reading the entirety of the event and ALL the tie-ins, this series is massive, and presents (to me) a best case both for and against doing this kind of cross-platform publishing event. Not all of the titles have the same level of quality, but the central stories of the flagship books each get to shine and actually contribute to the whole in unique ways.
