A Field Guide To Catching Crickets

FAIR WARNING!
If you are a sensitive reader please be aware that you may find topics in this book to be terribly offensive. I'd rather you not read it than receive a bad review because you have been offended. This is a fictional story but the hideousness of what happens is gut-wrenching. This book does have a gorgeous HEA that will move you to tears.

The soul is not where it lives, but where it loves.

A countryside ranch, naughty notes and a neighbor boy. Kissing in silos and skinny dipping under a full moon. Ten years gone. An ocean, a tragedy...secrets and buried things. Letting go and hanging on. Remembering to forget.

My reality became his nightmare, but then my nightmare became reality.

Hawke Slater was not only my brothers’ best friend, he was a tender, sweet country boy. I never wanted to leave, but there was no choice for me. Two things kept my soul alive, and I’m hanging onto hope that one might be an option for my future.

I wish none of it had been my fault, but it was.

Sloan Story McQueen has returned. Why would I hold out an ounce of hope that she’d want me once she finds out what I do for a living. Some call it obscene, but I’m just chasing storms and rainbows.

She’s holding onto something big. If only it were me.

This novel contains adult content and is not intended for sensitive readers.

Wow!! What an emotional story. I love this story. The characters were well developed. I can tell the Author has a personal attachment to them. That is why the story explodes with hungry emotions. I laughed and cried through some chapters. What an experience these characters go through. I can not imagine the heartbreak they had to endure. This Author blows my mind again with this story. Excellent job!

ARC Provided in Exchange for an Honest Review. :)

This is the second book I've read by the wonderful A. Wilding Wells, and I can say without any doubt or hesitation, I am a reader for LIFE! Some books you read, some books you devour, and some books you FEEL to the core of your being. I felt this book, with every beat of my heart. I cried with Sloan, I laughed with Hawke, and I just felt hope, so much hope that they could over come time, and history, and years past. To mend what had been broken between them and become whole again. Hawke & His Cricket. ...sigh.

A Lifetime of Love. Young Love, First Love, Stolen Love, Unbreakable Love.

From the way our brains fit together, to the way our hearts fit together, to the way all our body parts fit together. Its as though we were broken apart in some other lifetime then found eachother and became whole again in this one.

I feel like this quote, while spoiler free, it so perfectly captures the feel and the story of this whole beautiful book.

Hawke Slater, Brohican & World Famous Porn Star. He has the world's largest heart, and an equally large, well, you can guess. :) He fell in love at 18, quite possibly long before then. He gave his heart to his cricket, and she took it-and then she took it with her.

Sloan: What do you want to be when you grow up?
Hawke: Someone you can't imagine living without.
Sloan: You're Dope as Fuck. You're not going to make any of this
easy are you?
Hawke: Nope.

Sloan "Cricket" McQueen, She is Brave, but Broken. She is a Warrior who wants nothing but peace. She is a lover who has lived on love, feasted on it, breathed it and gained great strength from it. She's my hero. And I absolutely LOVE A. Wilding Wells for giving her to me.

"She makes pain look beautiful, like a springtime blossom trapped in an ice storm"

The character development in this book was off the charts. You know Hawke & Cricket. They become part of you, engrained in your heart. You feel their pain, and experience their joy. You want to fight for their love.

The love scenes, the love MAKING scenes in this book, so SO hot. Holy shit! Hawk Slater can make me chirp anyday! ;)

Read this book! Then talk to me about it! I could talk about this book all day long. Seriously. But I want to tell you everything! And I LOVED going into this book knowing almost nothing. I was able to almost immediately be completely swept away in the journey. And you will too. Enjoy!

“We’re stained by each other and our combined past. Both of us seek the ink of our future, no doubt wondering what sorts of stories will unfold after tonight”

When I received and ARC by the author, I was so curious and when it got banned by Amazon, I felt like a total badass for reading it.

Now, at first I felt the story had such a slow pace. I had a hard time keeping my attention to it since I like it more when stories get to the point fast #impatient but about 45% in, I finally got into the story and I couldn’t stop reading.

I want to start off with Sloan, the heroine. SHE MADE ME WANT TO PULL MY HAIR OUT!!

I just didn’t get her AT ALL! Her actions and reactions just didn’t make sense to me. I mean she finds out, the hero, Hawke is a porn star and she hardly gives a reaction? I mean ???????

BUT, I felt her every emotion to the bone. The way she was struggling really gripped my heart and squeezed a little.

“My heart can be a fickle bitch to deal with sometimes. One day, she’s open and letting the sun shine in. The next, she’s locked herself away and no one, not even I, can get to her”

I wanted her to come clean faster because it just took way too long, and I felt bad for Hawke because he was trying SO HARD.
But I also felt her emotions so strong, I kept rooting for her.

Since I started talking about Hawke, let’s get into him. I’m not going to say anything, just going to leave this little part here and you’ll love him right away, just like I did:

“I want to strip you down to your thoughts, want to hear your naked words. I want you heart exposed and defenseless.”

These two had a strong bond 10 years ago, and they’re even stronger now.

I fell in love with their little quirks, their weird traditions and there hot as f*** sex scenes.

“She’s the storm and I’m the calm”

When I finished this book, my emotions were all over the place.
Even though I had a hard time getting into it in the beginning, the story made up for it as it progressed.

Bless AWW for making beautiful stories and being a total sweetheart. Cheers !

** Recieved an ARC of this book from the author for an honest review**

4.5 amazing stars!!!! A. Wilding Wells rocks my world!!! She has such a way with her characters and developing their personalities and their traits that makes them so relateable and down to earth that you instantly form a connection with them!! And A Field Guide to Catching Crickets was no exception!! This book captivated me from start to finish, from constantly wanting to know what the HECK Sloan was keeping from Hawke, to LOVING how hard Hawke adored Sloan. His love for her lasted ten years and an ocean of seperation. He held no resentment towards her for her up and leaving with no explanation, and took her back 10 years later with open arms and a heart full of love for her. Sloan was one lucky BITCH! That my friends, is one HECK of a man. And a porn star to boot! HOLY HOTTNESS!! And man oh man, was their connection and chemistry jumping off the pages with flying colours. At first I wasn't sure how Sloan was going to deal with his career choice, but she took it in great stride and her love for him and hope for their future despite what happened in her past allowed her to be okay with it. I will say though that I was hoping for a little more drama and angst in terms of his job and how she was going to deal with it. But regardless, it was so sweet seeing how much those two loved each other and how they were there for each other despite the obstacle's they had to deal with.

Through the entire book I was on the edge of my seat, wondering what the HECK this girl went through that had her struggling so much with telling him. I really felt for her and knew it must have been bad, but when you find out, HOLY HECK is it a whopper of a secret!!! I couldn't believe how badly that girl was dragged though hell and back!! And here is the part where I found I wanted a little more from the story. I wanted Sloan to be ANGRY towards her parents! HOW could they have been okay for doing what they did in the first place and BASICALLY choosing Hawke over their own DAUGHTER'S happiness!!! I was livid for Sloan and what she experienced. Granted, what technically happened wasn't the parents doing, but their actions were the start of it all and if I were Sloan, they would have to GROVEL at my feet in penance. Again, I'm just saying that this was the only thing missing in the story FOR ME, and other readers have seemed to be more than fine without it. It definitly does not take away from the story at all, I just couldn't get over what they essentially did to her and wanted some anger from Sloan.

Overall I loved this book and the love between Sloan and Hawke. I adored how much Hawke loved Sloan and assured her of his love in any way he could throughout the entire thing. These two had had me feeling all the feels possible!! Another terrific, amazing FANTASTIC book from A. Wilding Wells! Fan for LIFE!!

I was so lucky to get an ARC of this beautiful book..I'm so in love with this book I can't even put it into words. This is my third book from A Wilding Wells and at this point I'll read her damn grocery list if she published it lol!! This is the story of two kids Sloan and Hawke who fell in love with each other early on but when Sloan is 15 and Hawke is 18 she suddenly has to move to Amsterdam with her grandmother leaving a broken hearted Hawke behind. 10 years pass before she comes back home for her brothers wedding..Sloan is nervous to see Hawke again because within those 10 years she cut all contact with him with no explanation as to why and she's also coming back with a shit load of secrets that when she eventually tells Hawke what happened she fears he may push her away and never love her again. What Sloan doesn't know is that Hawke has a secret of his own, Hawke Slater is the worlds number 1 porn star!!!

Even tho 10years has passed Hawke is still deeply in love with Sloan...but the question is is she still in love with him?? Will she still love him when he tells her what he does for a living.

I loved the shit out of Hawke...the love he has for Sloan was on a whole other level, it was so beautiful and so pure. He refused to give up even when Sloan was all over the place with her feelings....he knew that no matter what no matter how much time has passed that she was it..she was gonna be his future his forever. Despite everything that has happened they still had the undeniable chemistry that exploded every single time and good lord it was hot as hell!!! Hawke is a pornstar so you know he was putting in some work lol!! Those sex scenes were some of the best I've read in a while...oooo weeee it was hot!!!

This story is about true love..forgiveness not only of the other person but also of yourself. This book was dope as Fck... A Wilding Wells you are dope as Fck!!!

Beautiful on every level

Everything about this book had me hook, line and sinker. I could feel the world of Hawke and Sloane, not just because of the thick and utterly beautiful emotion but because of the magic language A Wilding Wells used to paint a vivid world I desperately want in on. Hawke was the delicious and full hearted man I dreamt of since I knew how to dream of boys. Sloane was beautiful, particularly broken, and will forever remind me to forgive, particularly myself. This book has magic woven into the pages and I consider myself truly blessed to have read it. Love this one completely!

I received this ARC for an honest review. If I could give it more than 5 stars I would. It was a hands down 5+++ stars for me.
I love the authors writing style and how she was able to make everything relatable and engaging. The words were like a hand that reached into my heart and squeezed it. I couldn't put it down and didn't want to. I was completely sucked into their world.
I was swooning all over the place with this story...my husband even told me if he heard me sigh out loud one more time he was going to take my kindle away!!! I didn't realize I was loud about it lol but I told him to leave the room - I couldn't make a "no sighing" promise.
Ahhhhh Sloan McQueen and Hawke Slater (Loved their names btw) - they were awesome.
Sloan was a passionate woman. She had a big heart and had so much love to give. She was funny and feisty and very sweet. I really liked her a lot. Although she had me frustrated me at times. I was getting whiplash from her. She loves Hawke and wanted to tell him the truth but couldn't get it out and it went back and forth like that until about 85% into the story. I get where she was coming from and that it was difficult for her to say it but Hawke had been nothing but open, honest and upfront with her, reassuring her that he loved her and nothing would change that.
Hawke - I fell for him from the beginning in the prologue. He was the epitome of a sexy country man who literally can charm the pants off anyone!! He was kind, sweet, gentle but rough, soooo loving and drop dead sexy. And his mouth!!! Oh the filthy things he could say (and do). He quickly made it to my top 5 book boyfriends!!!
It warmed my heart at how eager Hawke was to want to get to know Sloan again after the 10 years she's been away. You can feel the love he has for her and how much he missed her. I was rooting for him early on, hoping they would have their HEA.
I had a feeling early on of why Sloan ran away. However, it was a bit more complicated than I originally thought which added a nice surprise to the story. They definitely had their share of ups and downs and emotions were running high. The last 10% had me crying like a baby!

The Brohicans - I love the name of the group that was made up of Hawke and Sloans brothers. The guys made me laugh and I felt like I was included in their clan. All the secondary characters were great and brought a fun, homey element to the story. It was nice to see how supportive and strong they were with Sloan and everything she has gone through.
The little notes and where they were hidden were hilarious, especially the one in the burger buns. And the videos were a fascinating and huge part of this story. The gravestone rubbings were a hauntingly beautiful aspect and unique.
I also enjoy reading the "About the Author" portion with this author. I love finding out how her real life has come into her stories and find that the funniest or the most unusual things that happen in the story are from her real life.
Every little element added up to create a truly wonderful story. I highly recommend it.

*ARC PROVIDED FOR AN HONEST REVIEW*

SPEECHLESS.

I think I lose sense of everything surrounding me while reading A. Wilding Wells's books. I get sucked right in. I get invested in the characters and I turn into a puppy following them everywhere waiting for them to unravel and uncover their deepest darkest secrets. And believe me , they always have that one hell of a secret that turns tables.

This book was nothing less than frustrating. Yes, it frustrated me and made me angry. Thats why I loved it. I hated the wait. I hated how Sloan made me so damn angry and how I wanted to hit Hawke across the face.

These two were like a nuclear bomb. What hell of an explosion.

The truth is, we were made for each other in every possible way. From the way our brains fit together, to the way our hearts fit together, to the way all our body parts fit together. It’s as though we were broken apart in some other lifetime then found each other and became whole again in this one.

Sloan will force you to be angry. You won't be able to escape it. She is no easy character. She had a shit load of issues and it surprised me how she could still hold on for so long, but she was smart. Even after coming back, she was still thinking every single thing and waiting for the right moment. I hated her for most of the book. I hated how she insisted on keeping secrets and holding herself back. She kept on hurting herself and Hawke more. It was maddening. Despite her way of dealing with pain and how everything was revealed, I tried to understand her and her pain. It's not easy. She didn't have it easy. Although she really did some major mistakes, she never deserved all of this. Sloan was and will always be a survivor. She deserves her happy ever after.

Sloan was like a storm. She was unexpected , and she destroyed everything she came across, but she gives the space for sunlight to ome again. Once and for all.

Does her heart have any openings for me? Do I sit somewhere in her memory bank, locked in a crevice that could maybe still be found?

Hawke. Oh my god this man is an engima. He deserves an oscar!!!! I never knew someone could be this passionate, loving, caring and forgiving. He amazes me. He was like an open book waiting for Sloan to fill it. He never stopped loving her. At some points, I didn't believe it. I didn't believe that he could still manage to love her after so long. I was covinced that he just loved the idea of her, he loved the old version of Sloan. Not the one who went through hell during 10 years.
Hawke was so kind and sweet. I pictured him as a big man -in shape- with even a bigger heart.
And I can feel the sexiness just from reading. His job says it all!!

Hawke didn't mind and won't mind waiting another 10 years for Sloan. All he wanted was her love and more sexy tapes.

“I don’t want to let you down.” My hands shake when I think about it.
“Then don’t.”
“What if I’m not who you think I am?”
“And what if you are?”

I didn't like Sloan's family that much. They kept it all a secret and they are the ones that made Sloan stay away. I didn't like the whole secrecy and words of wisdom they gave Hawke when she came back. They made him even more mad!

Our eyes meet. In them, I see the universe I know and all of its truths.

Second book by this author and she is still going strong! I love her already!

I love strong characters -men or women- , but I am no big fan of waiting and pretending to be strong. That what made me hesitate at some points while reading. I liked the mystery, but I was at the edge of getting bored. The author and characters succeeded in keeping me on my toes.
Too much sex? Maybe. But I wasn't disgusted. It's how Sloan and Hawke coped with everything! It was their way of dealing and expressing their love. They had chemistry and believe me it's a major one.
I loved their conversations and banter. I wanted to quote the entire book!
I loved the ending , and how the author didn't go all out and gave Hawke and Sloan room to develope and get over their pasts slowly.

She’s a contest I have no rules for but need to win; she’s a mountain to climb with whatever equipment I can dig up inside me; she’s a test worth taking even though I have no idea what sorts of questions I’ll discover.

Sloan was Hawke's cricket. He loved catching her , but after 10 years he needed a field guide to catching crickets.

I was fortunate enough to receive an ARC for this beautiful book from the Author and I way beyond excited becuse this was my first ARC ever and also the first book by A. Wilding Wells. Thank you so much for trusting and sharing your work with me.

I don't think my words will do the justice to explain how this book made me feel.
From the beginning I was pulled in and  captivated.  With most books it takes some time for the story to develope and make me feel connected to the characters within it.  However A. Wilding Wells writes so beautifully that her words just made me on the edge turning page after page and wanting to know what happens next.

This story has so much heart and soul in it and you can tell that the Author wanted us to feel everything these two characters where portraying.  Oh and I felt it all and more.
I absolutely fell in love with Hawke. OMG the depth of his feelings for Sloan just  had me swooping and smiling like a love struck schoolgirl.  And let's not forget that this hot ass man is a Porn Star!!!  Like seriously can life even get better than that? A porn star who has been in love with the same girl for most of his life.  Caring, loving, devoted and incredibly well endowed man ... he's  become the man of my dreams.  And speaking of dreams ... ladies the Sex scenes in this book ... OMFG!!! You will definitely have some wet dreams after reading them. They've were sooooo Hot and amazing ... like I need to wake my husband up and make him be my Hawke amazing.

And Sloan ... the struggle she went through, the loss, the heartache it honestly made my heart hurt for her.  At times I was frustrated for her being so guarded  (we all want the happily every after to come sooner than later in books) but I totally understood after I finished the book why it was necessary.

This book honestly had it all for me ... the connection between Sloan and Hawke was so incredible, the storyline was amazing (there is nothing in this book in my opinion that made me uncomfortable and I honestly don't understand why this beautiful book would be banned and not shared with the world.)

One of my favourite quotes from the book: (there were sooooo many half of my Kindle is hilighted and I had to keep going back and forth re reading everything)

" The truth is, we were made for each other in every possible way. From the way our brains fit together, to the way our hearts fit together, to the way all our body parts fit together. It’s as though we were broken apart in some other lifetime then found each other and became whole again in this one. "

Oh, I'm quickly becoming one of this authors biggest fans!!! She writes the sexiest country stories with the sexiest alpha males, I can't get enough !

From the very first line, I fell in love! I felt like every line was beautiful, deeply poetic. The author just has a way of writing beautiful words.

I enjoyed Sloan & Hawke's second chance love story. Their childhood crush turns into a life long love affair. In the story, 10 years separates them. And when they are reunited they pick up right where they left off. As if no time at all went by but Sloan is hiding this huge secret from Hawke. And Hawke knows there's something but he's so happy to have Sloan back that he hardly pushes the issue. I loved how hard Hawke loved that girl.

For me my only issue was wanting more of the story during the 10 years that separated them. I loved all the hot, steamy sex scenes because omg Hawke is absolutely FIRE! But I felt like that was a majority of the book. At about 80% still nothing on what happened to Sloan during that time. And then when it did come out, I felt like that 10 years was wrapped up in all of 2 pgs. I just wanted more in depth details into what kept her away from the love of her life for 10 years. I felt like it was so a huge part of the story. With the exception of that, I quite enjoyed the story.

I'm definitely looking forward to this authors next book.

I am really starting to love this author who is new to me! This book was the story of two childhood sweethearts who are separated for 10 years and when they are finally reunited they both have secrets and a past. Hawke is/was my dream boyfriend...sweet, loyal, and hot as hell. Sloane...oh Sloane...I felt for the girl and all she went through...just heartbreaking. It wasn't all tears though because these 2 definitely brought the heat! Throughout the book Sloane's past is a mystery and it really made me want to keep reading because I was dying to know what her story was and how it was going to affect Hawke and vice versa. I really liked this book and don't understand how this book is anymore controversial than some of the others in this genre, but to each their own I guess. I thought this was a great read! The only thing that bugged me was that I think Sloane's parents got off way too easily considering they set her whole story in motion, but I don't forget people doing my charachters wrong very easily so that's probably more my issue lol.

4.5 Stars!

My feelings were trampled on…just when I thought this would be an easy breezy book…

Sloan Mcqueen, you are one exquisite remarkable soul! A survivor with undeniable courage. Yes, Hawke Slater was easily stealing the show because of his free spirited vibe and charming personality, but you my darlin’ swallowed me whole, crushed my heart and mended it. At first I wanted her to just shake it off and open her heart to Hawke once again (stop torturing the man), but I realized her actions were completely fathomable.

I loved how A. Wilding Wells shifted the tone from light, sexy and intriguing to intense and tragic. An admittedly overwhelming story but a heart tugging pot of gold. Two words that lingered in my mind during the last parts of this book - IF ONLY! In the end, the journey of the two major characters was worth it! Indeed it is true, that TRUE love conquers all!

Bear in mind, the love scenes are EXTREMELY sexy! I assure you, you will enjoy them and shudder in a good way! :)

This book was so much more than I thought it would be. The story went above and beyond with some twists and turns I wasn't expecting. But I love every minute of it. It didn't lack humor, the quirky banter and hot scenes that we love but when shit got real I got all the FEELS. My heart hurt for everything Hawke & Sloan's love and life went trough. But thankfully their love was strong and real enough to survive and heal their wounds.

*I really hope Amazon lift their ban on this book.

Sat here in floods of tears in the aftermath that is finishing this book!! Where do I start.... Well first of all bravo awildingwells you have succeeded in making this hard faced cow full on ugly cry and I tell you that is no mean feat!
Sloan and Hawkes story is just beautiful and the way the secrets of the book are revealed is just perfect, allowing just the right amount of frustration and suspense!
Trying to describe this book without giving any spoilers is hard so I'll just say this..... If you want full on heart flips and butterflies in your belly, if you want heart wrenching sobs when the book comes to a climax and if you want a hotter than hot but sweeter than sweet male lead then this book is definitely for you!! I loved every minute and am now sat wondering why the hell have I not read any of A Wilding Wells' books before!! I give "a field guide to catching crickets" 5 gorgeous stars

I know that all authors & books need reviews to help promote them. All this book needs is for you to read it & be absolutely blown away by the intensity, angsty, gut wrenching beauty that is A Field Guide to Catching Crickets.

I will say this book frustrated me. I just wanted it to get to the point. I wanted to know all the deep down secrets and I felt I deserved the right to know it all right away, like NOW!!! But then when it all comes out, I'm practically screaming at the author to take it back because I know that means it is coming closer to the end. I just didn't want it to end.

This book with affect you, it will haunt you & leave you wanting more. You will become invested in these characters & what becomes of them. I swear I wanted to climb inside this book.

This will become one of my top rereads for sure.

4.5 our of 5 Magic between the Pages, Passion-laced Stars!!!

" How the hell does a fifteen-year-old girl fall in love with an eighteen-year-old boy? I hardly fell. It was the opposite of that. A soar. A hurdle. A breakthrough to a new place in my heart."

Well, butter my biscuit and call me Sally!! I continue to be surprised and flabbergasted when I stumble upon such amazing authors I didn't even know existed. I must have been hiding under some unknowing rock. I'm so glad I muscled my way out from under that dreaded rock and found the A. Wilding Wells glowing light. This story was so beautifully written, that I wanted to literally cannon-ball myself right into the pages. The characters rocked my world in every way. Hawke Slater was one tasty foul-mouthed treat.

"Each goose bump has his name on it, and the memory of his touch."

Sloan and Hawke were high school sweet hearts who fell in forever-love. Then Sloan leaves to go overseas to Amsterdam to live with her grandmother with no real explanation.
*Cue Mysterious Music*
Hawke was left confused and completely heart broken. So what does a young hot stud do when his heart is broken? He puts his other throbbing organ to good use.
*Taps Mic* Introducing Hawke Slater...pornstar extraordinaire!!

"Well, look at you, Mr. Porn Star. Ejaculating your thoughts all over me."

Sloan comes back to her home town ten years later with a bag full of mystery in tow and a whole lot of worry over how she would be received. When Hawke and Sloan reunite, the remembered passion was off the charts hot. My Kindle was steaming up, Rose-and-Jack-rolling-around-in-a-car-on-the-titanic style. The obstacles they have to maneuver around were not limited to Hawke's lack of clothing career status though.

"Ten years become breaths, moans, and memory, as though we'd never left each other that last night on the willow bank, as though I'd imagined the torture and grief I'd gone through."

"Our hunger rocks in hot sparks as we grunt out words in fiery machine-gun rounds of desire."

[image error] photo AFGTCC Teaser 3_zpspqifmxtk.jpg

The love they once shared is clearly still burning fiercely within both of them. Hawke wants her back in his life, but Sloan kept a wall of distance between them, due to all the mysterious going-ons that happened whilst she was away for a decade. Details were revealed painstaking bit by bit. It drove me, as the reader, to the edge of Kindle abuse, and it eventually caused road blocks for their relationship. They couldn't move on until all the secrets were revealed. Once everything was out in the open, could they get through all the old scars and the fresh wounds?

"We're stained by each other and our combined past. Both of us seek the ink of our future..."

This story was not only enthralling and enchanting, but it was beautifully told. There was so much heat, mystery and beautifully written magic. The author's words flow so poetically that I found myself repeatedly rereading lines, just so the magic can really soak in. My highlight function on my Kindle was pushed to its limits. I didn't want it to end, but I couldn't stop reading. This was the first book I read from this author, but not the last. I plan to do some catching up, in true book junkie fashion. The unjust ban that Amazon put on this book was finally lifted, so now you can go and pre-order this amazing book. Get those one click fingers flexing my book junkies.

**NOTICE: ARC PROVIDED IN EXCHANGE FOR HONEST REVIEW**
There is a cliche that begins "There are two kinds of people in this world..." I would argue that there are actually two worlds: the normal, safe, sane one most of us live in, and a shadow world. It is the shadow world which has two kinds of people: the malignant deviants (terrorists, rapists, killers, abusers, etc.), and their victims. Every victim dreams of escape, but not all do, or not right away. Those who do escape find themselves forever changed by their time in the shadows. The question for them becomes, "How can I live with what I have survived?" A. Wilding Wells' novel is one victim's answer. Told in language both lyrical and immediate, A Field Guide to Catching Crickets pulls no punches, telling a tale both bright and dark with gentle and inexorable realism.
Hawke Slater and Sloan McQueen have grown up together and fallen in love as teens, when, inexplicably, Sloan breaks up with Hawke and moves to Amsterdam with her grandmother. A decade later, just as inexplicably, she returns. Although it quickly becomes apparent that their love is still very much alive, Hawke and Sloan are not the innocents they once were. There is no going back, and the way forward is a minefield of secrets, buried emotions, and real danger.
The light in all this darkness is that both Hawke and Sloan have a huge capacity to love, and to acknowledge that it is the immutable past which has made them who they are. Theirs is a real love which does not merely forgive hurt, it renders scars beautiful. This is a dark and beautiful book, one I loved and will read again. Thank you, AWW.

This is my second book from this author and I really enjoyed this love story. The main characters meet as childhood friends turned lovers and are separated for 10 years due to some things that happened in their teens. This was a very emotional journey for both characters and they way they deal with old demons and uncovering a truth that could have changed their entire relationship. It's just goes to show how true love can conquer all. This author has such a unique writing style and way of storytelling that I enjoy. It really saddens me that Amazon has put a ban on her story. Is there sensitive subject matter? Yes, but you know what, so does real life. Is this something that actually happens in the world? Yes it is. I understand people having certain triggers, I think all of us have our own, but this author warns you ahead of time and I think her story should be shared just as other stories with sensitive subject matter are shared. In saying that I truly hope this ban is lifted so this beautiful love story can be shared with the world!

Books like this make you wish you could give more stars. Ms. Wells has, once again, blown me away! Cricket made me want to strangle her at times, but when you realize the reason for her actions your heart shatters for her. I spent several chapters sobbing with her. What a wonderfully strong woman to rise above and find her happiness. An amazing book from start to finish, I highly recommend you read this the first chance you get!

P. S. Amazons current ban is Absofuckinglutely ridiculous! Support indie authors damn it! They are the reason so many of us book whores don't commit murder!

Hawke became an unofficial part of Sloan's family since he started playing with her and her brothers when he was ten and she was seven. At first, he treated her just like her brothers, but as they grew up, feelings started to change. Sloan and Hawke spent most of their childhood playing on the family farm, skinny dipping in the lake, and learning the art of flirting with each other. One way Hawke flirts is by leaving dirty notes for Sloan in very unexpected places. One day she'd find a note in her tampon box, another day one would be wrapped around her curling iron. The notes started out silly, but eventually became more serious.

The book opens on a scene when Sloan is fifteen and Hawke is eighteen. They are in the middle of a goodbye because Sloan is going to Amsterdam to stay with her grandmother. Both are heartbroken, but Sloan knows she is doing the right thing. We don't know exactly what the problem is (but a skilled reader will have a guess), but Sloan is determined not to ruin Hawke's future by derailing his plans to be a filmmaker.

Hawke is beside himself when he can't get any information about Sloan once she leaves. While he is still best friends with her brothers, no one in the family will give him any updates. Soon, Hawke comes to terms with the fact that Sloan is lost to him and moves on with his life. He ends up making movies, just not the kind he intended.

Ten years later, on the eve of Sloan's brother's wedding, Sloan comes home. Hawke is filled with many emotions. He's excited, he's nervous, he's angry. In order to calm down he goes to the place that is filled with happy memories, the lake. Turns out when he gets there, Sloan is already out on the floating raft - naked. Seems she needed to calm down, too.

Soon, Hawke and Sloan are reacquainted. It is almost like she never left, except Hawke can tell there are things she is keeping from him. Big things. He has a big secret of his own, but he knows he'll share it with her because he doesn't want anything to stand in the way of them being together. He loves Sloan. Always has and always will. He just doesn't know if Sloan feels the same way. Where was she for ten years? Why did she stop all contact with him and ask her family not to share anything with him?

Hawke and Sloan's second chance is so sweet. Sloan suffered more than he could ever understand. She's embarrassed and ashamed of what she did and what happened to her as a result. Can he ever forgive her? Will he think less of her?

Hawke is determined to get HIS Sloan back. The problem is, Sloan doesn't know if she exists anymore. Will Hawke have the patience to stay around to find out?

A FIELD GUIDE TO CATCHING CRICKETS is amazing. It is a book that I couldn't put down. The story is filled with joy, sadness, and hope. Hawke is a fantastic man. His devotion to Sloan, even after all the years apart, makes you melt. UGH! If only all women had a Hawke of their own.

A. Wilding Wells has a knack for writing a sweet romance that is smoking hot at the same time. If you aren't familiar with her, check out her other books. I loved HOW TO TAME BEASTS AND OTHER WILD ANIMALS, but haven't read A MESS OF REASON. I just ordered it though.

***ARC kindly provided by the author, in exchange for an honest review***

5 STARS

ALTERNATIVE TITLE: How To Draw Beauty From The Darkest Places

It’s official: A. Wilding Wells is now one of my favorite authors.

What can I add to the reviews that have been posted for this story?...
I am still finding my words to describe what I felt yesterday when I closed the book.

I’ll try to avoid spoilers, and focus on why I LOVED the Sloan and Hawkes’ love story.

The thing is A. Wilding Wells has an undeniable talent: writing consistent characters, who are absolutely raw, dirty, filthy, steamy, but essentially, they love with all their soul.

This love story is a roller coaster, of course I was afraid to find out, finally, what happened in those 10 years, I was afraid to discover that truth Sloan hided from Hawkes and even her family, that had her struggling so much (I mean… all the banning thing had me quite reluctant, right??).

And while I was like Hawkes, waiting for her to finally tell us, I played in my mind all the worst possible scenarios.

I read this book waiting for the bombshell, Hiroshima and Nagasaki together. I knew it was going to hurt.

And while I was bracing myself, I also fell in love with Hawkes’ heart.

Once again, A. Wilding Wells’ main male character is a REAL BEAST. A good one: a raw, dirty mouthed but so noble and caring and gentle and above all, fiercely in love.

So far, and it is my own opinion, having read a few weeks ago “How To Tame Beasts And Other Wild Things », A. Wilding Wells’ characters are never gross to me, but RAW, with all their imperfections that made them so beautifully perfect to me.

And like I said, since I won’t give spoilers, she knows how to draw beauty from the darkest places.

And you’d ask why I know this is [another A. Wilding Wells’] GOOD book?
Because I was really affected.
Because I needed time to cool off and find my words to write my review
Because she has her own way to write a fictional story.
Because I wouldn’t have imagined another ending to this story.

Now I’ll share what I DIDN’T like of this book (and it isn’t about the book per se):
Why in the hell this book was banned from you-know-which-website?????
I’ll let it there, for you to think about it.
But there are topics so much worse out there, don’t you think?

A simple warning notice is enough, like the author did.

And to resume all my feelings: I strongly suggest you read the “acknowledgments” pages in the end of the book, especially the “About this book” and “About H. Jr”
All that matters is being said in those few lines, and seriously, the you-know-which-website-I’m-talking-about simply didn’t get the point.

Another thing I’d like to share: I love the covers of A. Wilding Wells’ books so far. Covers are so important, and in my opinion, there are so many adult books with lame covers….

A. Wilding Wells, your writing is a blissing to me!
I wish we’ll have so many more books from you to read!
Thank you.

A Field Guide to Catching Crickets is a book full of heartache, love, redemption and forgives. Chuck in a sexy ass man named Hawke (will gladly sit on his face) and a beautiful and strong heroine named Slone and you have a book of gold. They both will make you fall in love with them and the story straight away

I'm not going to spoil anything about the storyline because everyone needs to read it themselves. Yes, it might be a hard limit for some but if you have an open mind you'll get the message at the end of the book. And some people stories aren't wrapped in a pretty pink bow and this is one of them but it's what makes the story great.

Apart from the storyline this book is filled with love and sexiness right from the start. There is no mucking around with Hawke he takes what he wants and what he wants most is Slone. The banter between them is just down right hilarious filled with wit and sex innuendos that will make your heart race. Their chemistry and love for one another is off the charts. Wells definitely brings the steam and wet panties with these two!

The only thing that I could fault with this book is the parents and timing. The parents just got off Scott free and everything that happened was because of them. I can't for the life of me think that Hawke would ever not be there for Slone when she was younger and why didn't they go get her!!(once you've read the book you'll know what I'm talking about) Another thing was timing. You have to wait majority of the book for Slones secrets to be revealed where they could of came out earlier on in the book and break some of Slones repetitiveness of her guilt whenever she had a POV. In saying that it just makes you want to devour the book faster to know what happens.

#Amazon has a ban on this book and I have no idea why it would. It's no different to any other taboo books out there. What Slone goes through is heart breaking but it's a fact of life that this stuff has happened off paper and for Wells to bring this story to life and pull from personal experience and make it into something inspiring and meaningful is beautiful and I definitely think this story deserves to have its voice and not be banned.

This is the second book I've read from A. Wilding. Wells and she didn't disappoint. I willl gladly read anything from this lady, as I know her stories will only get better and better. 5 chirping starts ✨✨✨✨

First off, thank you a million times over to A. Wilding Wells, for the ARC copy of this story. I couldn't wait to get my paws on this beauty!

Oh my goodness, this book! What an emotional journey! I'm used to people having secrets and skeletons in the closet, but Sloane and Hawke really had to battle for a decade (or more, technically) to maintain a relationship that would have torn most couples apart.

Hawke and Sloane have been together since they were tykes. That's just the way it was from the time they were ten and seven. At fifteen, Sloane's life changed, and unexpectedly, she leaves the man she thought she'd be with forever.

While she went to Hell and back, Hawke was trying to lose himself in a career. It's when they finally come together a decade later at a family wedding, that the time they were apart seems like it never existed. While they both wish to immerse themselves in one another, too much time has gone by, and enough for a thousand lifetimes have happened to each of them. They know they can't just pick up where they left off, but instead, trudge through everything that caused them to lose one another in the first place.

Aside from work interrupting my reading schedule, I devoured this book. Sloane and Hawke tortured me with their ups and downs. Hawke tried so hard to be patient, while also desiring an explanation as to why she left him when they were both so young and perfect together. I understood Sloane's trepidation to tell Hawke what had happened, but at the same time, he threw his heart down on the line from the moment she was beside him again. Yes, a lot of time had gone by, however, she had to have known down to her bones how much she could trust him with her past.

These two destroyed me, but, shocker, I found it absolutely worth it.... I'm simply a glutton for punishment.

Congratulations, Wells, for destroying and then repairing my heart with such a tragically beautiful story!

4.25 STARS!

Whew! This was one of those books that you just have to keep reading and pray for the best possible outcome, knowing that the author will be faithful and give it to you. That's exactly what I did. I started and finished within 24 hours, only stopping for some much needed sleep.

I won't get into details with character arcs, etc, because it's better to go into this one trusting and a bit blind to their story. Simply put, "Crickets" focuses on Hawke and Sloane - two childhood friends turned lovers, separated as teens, and reunited 10 years later. This is the story of their sometimes messy reunion and what occurred during their separation.

I'm not going to say that this is an easy read, but I, personally, tend to be a bit sensitive. That did not stop me from delving into this one, because I fully trust the author. What I did get was an emotionally intense, deeply moving, soul-mate kind of love story. If you have read at least two of A. Wilding Wells novels, you can tell that she is a spoken artist. While not written in verse, at times it is almost like prose poetry. It's beautiful and, at times, overwhelming. For me, just like reading Shakespeare or even (one of my faves) Jane Austen, I would have to take a mental break to absorb some of the dialogue and gear up to continue.

This, being my second novel by A. Wilding Wells, I have quickly become a die-hard fan. I do have to mention, although I enjoyed reading about the journey of Hawke and Sloane, How to Tame Beasts and Other Wild Things still tops my favorite books of 2016. I will quickly finish the first in her trio of released books, and patiently (or not) wait for the next one. I know it won't be soon enough.

I was given an ARC of A Field Guide to Catching Crickets in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.

I was gifted an ARC In exchange of an honest review:

My Review:

A. Wilding Wells writing never ceases to amaze me she always ropes me in hook, line and sinker I get lost in all her magical wildly naughty words she paints pictures so vividly that I get upset when I have to leave the world she's written.

A Field Guide To Catching Crickets was no exception she painted the leading lady's Sloan's Mc Queen's dark pass with such feeling my heart instantaneously broke for this poor girl/woman no one should everhave to go through what she did.

Oh the dreamy X-rated Hawke Slater you surprised me with that wonderful heart of yours. You held on for so long and fought for what you wanted and I applaud you (these men are a dime a dozen) his love stood the test of time.

The lives these two souls lived while apart made them stronger as a whole from tragedy came a love story that against all odds had the power to survive then and years later. The darker parts of this book are what makes the story so keep reading on even if you find it hard too.

My Final Thoughts:

I fall in love with all of A. Wilding Wells leading me (I can't help it, I'm a sucker for a smooth talker) I also adored how she turned something so tragic and sad into something beautiful. Now here's my rant: This book has been banned by Amazon which is absurd, especially this day in age, I believe that every AUTHOR has a right to write what they envision and feel, Along with every READER has a right to read what they WANT!!! So Amazon you need to get your act together! Just an FYI If Amazon is banning A Field Guide To Catching Crickets you so know it's that good!

A. Wilding Wells' A Field Guide To Catching Crickets is what I read for. What can I say? I was wowed and surprised and on the edge of my seat as I followed Sloane McQueen's sweet but complicated second chance romance. As Sloane pursued her own desire—a drive to confess about the traumatic experiences which have shaped her life away from her sweetheart Hawke—I found myself simultaneously desiring to understand her, and the secrets that shroud her relocation from the United States to Amsterdam at such a young age. Sloane is such a beautiful loving character with such a big heart. You can't help but feel for what those 10 years away from her sweetheart Hawke were like for her.

Hawke Slater is what I call every girls wet dream. Not only is he one sexy, hot, hunk, but he is a patient, loving, and caring sexy hunk. All he wants is Sloane in his life and nothing will stop him from getting the love of his life back, evident by all the physical and psychological tensions which try to keep this couple apart. In the end, as Sloane's complex is revealed and distilled, the question arises: can love conquer all, even under these circumstances? To that, I'll leave it up to other readers to discover.

Another amazing book by A. Wilding Wells, who definitely had me laughing, crying and falling in love with another beautiful couple.

This is a story of two children Sloan and Hawke falling in love with each other at early stage but have to separated at the age of 15 and 18.

10 years pass before Sloan comes back for her brother’s wedding and is nervous to meet Hawke again after all this while cutting contacts with him . However , you can feel the love Hawke still has for Sloane and how much he missed her. I fell for Hawke as he’s so sweet, kind , loving and caring.

About 80% of the book is a mystery of Sloane’s past and this makes me dying to know the reason of her leaving to Amsterdam. However to be honest I’m a bit pissed off with Sloan on certain part too.

When Sloan eventually told Hawke what happened she fear he may not want to love her again.
Eventhough 10 years has passed, Hawke has been all this while reassuring her that he loved her and nothing would change the love he had for her which is so pure and beautiful.

Overall I enjoyed this book & don’t find issues that are sensitive to me.

I Hope Amazon can lift the ban.

Thanks to A.Wilding Wells for providing me with an ARC

What a beautiful story. I was captured from beginning to end. The love between Hawk and Sloan was inspiring. Their paths crossed at an early age and their connection was immediate. When Sloan is forced to leave to go to Amsterdam, they are both completely heartbroken. But fate and destiny play a hand in bringing them face to face once again after being separated for 10 years. Will their chemistry be the same?

Hawk was hotness personified! That man had me wanting his website to be for real! He was the sweetest and kindest man who was irrevocably in love with his childhood sweetheart. Seeing her again brought back wonderful childhood memories. But the pain of feeling abandoned still remains. Will he be able to forgive Sloan?

Sloan. This woman infuriated me so much at first. I became impatient with her and wanted to shake her into reality. She's been through so much and has experienced so much pain in the last 10 years. Will she be able to move past this? Will Hawk be able to?

This is a story of forgiveness, redemption, and hope. I strongly recommend it! Well done A. Wilding Wells!

This was an amazing read! It was intense, sexy, heartbreaking, funny and healing. This is a book about second chance love. And so much more. Hawke and Sloan are childhood sweethearts. They live an ideal life on a farm in California. Until one day when they were teenagers Sloan tells Hawke she is leaving him to go live overseas. Fast forward 10 years and Sloan is back. Things hasn't gone quite as Sloan and Hawke bought it would go. It's obvious Sloan has been through some things and Hawke is successful but in a very unconventional way. One thing that has not changed is the love and passion they have for one another. But will they be able to get past Hawkes career and the demons Sloan is still fighting.

This book was so much more than i was expecting, i knew for sure i was in for a great read from M's Wilding Wells but what i got was WOW!!! I laughed i cried had quite a few knicker melting & swoon worthy moments but ultimately there's is a bond that is just unbreakable. For me this book was a second chance at love of epic proportions, Soulmates is what i would call Sloan and Hawke's love, it doesn't matter in life what happens soulmates will always find each other. The suspense builds and builds throughout this book leaving you on the edge of your seat. But it is also superbly written that it never falters or drags on you never get the feeling of just fillers every chapter has a deep meaning which keeps pulling you in more and more, i couldn't get enough.

There truly is some beautiful and oh my quotes from this book.
"She makes pain look beautiful, like a springtime blossom trapped in an ice storm"

From the way our brains fit together, to the way our hearts fit together, to the way all our body parts fit together. Its as though we were broken apart in some other lifetime then found each other and became whole again in this one.

“Don’t be afraid of loving me again,”

"Well, look at you, Mr. Porn Star. Ejaculating your thoughts all over me."

"I don't do baby steps sweetheart either we're gonna fuck or we're gonna forget about it"

All that's left to say is A. Wilding Wells you've turned something so tragic and sad into something beautiful. And i thank you for an Amazing read!!!
