Cassandra Clare has stated that this book does not currently have an established publication date. She has indicated that she expects to write and publish it after the launch of The Wicked Powers, as the story takes place during the same timeline and overlaps with events in that series. No official release schedule has been announced.
“Over the years writing the Shadowhunter books, Magnus Bane has emerged as one of the most fun and fascinating characters for me to bring to life,” Clare says in a release. “He’s always had a lot of secrets — there are so many things we don’t know about Magnus, from the story of his first love to the secrets of his parentage, to the beginning of his relationship with Alec. All those are things I was able to touch on in The Bane Chronicles, but I’m excited to dig in even more deeply in these three volumes devoted to Magnus, his past, his future, and his present.”
Says Chu, “I am so excited to contribute to the world that Cassandra Clare has created. These books and characters are iconic, and Magnus is a fan favorite. I can’t wait to give them all the things they deserve. And probably a few they don’t. Sorry, Magnus.”
Cassandra Clare was born to American parents in Tehran, Iran and spent much of her childhood travelling the world with her family, including one trek through the Himalayas as a toddler where she spent a month living in her father’s backpack. She lived in France, England and Switzerland before she was ten years old.
Since her family moved around so much she found familiarity in books and went everywhere with a book under her arm. She spent her high school years in Los Angeles where she used to write stories to amuse her classmates, including an epic novel called “The Beautiful Cassandra” based on a Jane Austen short story of the same name (and which later inspired her current pen name).
After college, Cassie lived in Los Angeles and New York where she worked at various entertainment magazines and even some rather suspect tabloids where she reported on Brad and Angelina’s world travels and Britney Spears’ wardrobe malfunctions. She started working on her YA novel, City of Bones, in 2004, inspired by the urban landscape of Manhattan, her favourite city. She turned to writing fantasy fiction full time in 2006 and hopes never to have to write about Paris Hilton again. Cassie’s first professional writing sale was a short story called “The Girl’s Guide to Defeating the Dark Lord” in a Baen anthology of humor fantasy. Cassie hates working at home alone because she always gets distracted by reality TV shows and the antics of her cats, so she usually sets out to write in local coffee shops and restaurants. She likes to work in the company of her friends, who see that she sticks to her deadlines.
City of Bones was her first novel. Sword Catcher is her most recent novel.
edit: it's been pushed back indefinitely. late 2022 at the earliest.
12/26/20 - whatever this is about, we do know it takes place between the dark artifices and the wicked powers which means we’ll at least get: - malec being husbands - rafe and max being lil cuties - the lightwood-banes being family goalz - alec being consul - magnus (& probs catarina and ragnor) having to deal with the aftermath of the blight/sorting the whole black volume thing out - the end of shinyun’s arc (thank god) - i saw somewhere helen and aline will appear (plz) - diego, mark, maia, bat, and lily all work closely with alec now so they should all make appearances - tessa and jem?? as well as lil mina and precious kit?? (pretty plz) - l u c i f e r - cassie typically ends series with weddings, so possible a clace / sizzy joint-wedding - a wild cliff-hanger to make the wait for twp 110000x worse
this is my #3 most-anticipated book of 2021!! i’d honestly love if it was just 400 pages of domestic malec fluff, but they’ll have to be some conflict because that’s how novels work.
((i just realized — this is probably the last time we’ll ever get alec lightwood pov, which makes me emo af. i think magnus gets a pov every series so he might get one in twp, but he definitely will in chain of thorns in 2022. the fact that alec has had a pov since 2008 and this is his last . . . ))
Dude im going bananas. Imagine me foaming at the mouth, gnawing at the bars of my enclosure ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 3. Sept. 2024

I think about what this book will contain AT LEAST twice a day
THAT EPILOGUE FROM TLBOTW! clearly something is up, and I'm dying for it to be serious and dark and this definitely explains all the "Princes of Hell/demons" fanart Cassie has been getting commissioned.
[September 5th, 2020]: the wait for this book is gonna be LONG but i know it will be absolutely worth it and that TBVotD will serve.. i mean.. its set between TDA and TWP soooo >:P
Esas personas del futuro que vinieron a calificar un libro del que aun no se tiene ni portada...¿Por que no nos dejan mejor como termina la saga? Hagan una sinopsis, no sean tímidos
The Black Volume of the Dead will be the third and final book in The Eldest Curses trilogy by Cassandra Clare and Wesley Chu. It doesn’t have a release date yet, and since it’s set during the events of The Wicked Powers, it won’t be published until after at least The Last King of Faerie (expected in fall 2026).
This last installment will once again follow Magnus Bane and Alec Lightwood, with chapters told from both of their points of view. Readers can also expect to see Alec’s new role as Consul of the Clave-in-Exile explored, along with the effect this demanding job has on his time with his family. According to Cassie, something happens that will challenge the entire Lightwood-Bane family.
Like the other titles in the trilogy, The Black Volume of the Dead is named after a powerful spell book.
If I don't get the certainty of Magnus' immortality issue which he wants to get rid off so he can grow old together with Alec, I WILL BE so freakin.... MAD, I will go to Cassie's house and beg her in front of her door all day all night.
I just came here to complain. I love Magnus and Alec and I expected the last book to come out in 2021.... It's been 4 years and when I check CC's website I see only this highly disappointing message:
"The Lost Book of the White and The Red Scrolls of Magic are already released, and you can find them in any bookstore. The third book, The Black Volume of the Dead, has not yet been scheduled for publication"
What's going on with TBVOTD??? Book people help a girl out and let me know if you have any updates on this one!
How do you write a review on something you didn't read. I hit read on the book excerpt and this review came up instead. I hope things come out sooner than later and everyone stops blaming the pandemic that had its major hit 18 months ago.
That epilogue at the end of TLBOTW makes me feel so excited for this book, I hope we find out some more about max and see a bit of his POV but mainly I'm excited to see what sammael has in store for them, what with his recruiting the other princes of hell and everything 😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀
Me: closure? Cassandra Clare: NEVER Me: this will destroy me mentally, emotionally, and physically if someone throws it hard enough, and yet I feel I have had a better life because of this… no WONDER I think like a book character
I’m just wondering if there is any idea as to when this book is set to be published. I know it was delayed due to COVID, but I’m hoping that this final book will be released before Clare begins releasing her TWP trilogy.
IM SO EXCITED FOR THIS!! But I still need to read the first one lmao I was going to but my stupid brain thought the second one was the first and bought that one.
