Join the most notorious occult society of Victorian England - The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn - alongside luminaries such as W.B. Yeats, Alister Crowley, and others. This book includes extensive source material (including rules for astral projection and Hermetic Magick) and four Call of Cthulhu scenarios offering a look at the dark side of Victoria's Empire.
This supplement for the Cthulhu by Gaslight setting of the Call of Cthulhu tabletop RPG is exhaustively researched and an interesting read. The authors delve into the origin, the life, and the eventual collapse of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, a secret society (one of many) operating at the end of the 1800s. Real life mixes with fiction in the pages, as actual members of the society are explored, and strange Lovecraftian horrors are grafted on. For the history alone, it's worth a read. I've thought of running a game where the player characters are all members of a group like the Dawn, but I suspect I'd fictionalize it quite a bit. There are three adventures provided, two of which are connected. I like the two connected ones are of particular interest. A potentially cool twist on a famous legend. I could see working it into a larger game, creating a major villain, with just a bit of work. The 1800s certainly seems like it has a lot of potential for running Call of Cthulhu, and I could definitely see running a mini-campaign that set up for a bigger, more traditional, 1920s game.
