This is one of my most favorite books of all time. I still have my old, battered copy.

As no description is provided by goodreads, I will take the liberty of transcribing the one on the back of the book:

"Perfectly petite, blond, blue-eyed Chelsea Ann Hyatt is a self-proclaimed cream puff. Her motto: never walk when you can ride and never sit when you can recline. She'd rather die than go five whole days without her blow dryer while rafting down the Colorado River. But her brother 'Ranger' Rick is taking the trip, and her best friend Sandy is hopelessly in love with him. If Chelsea's really a true blue friend, she'll go. Right? Talk about sacrifices! Whatever is she going to do in the middle of a wilderness and a raging river without her makeup kit, hair spray and breath mints? So here she is surrounded by Boy Scouts and a rugged outdoorsy leader of the pack named Jess...and what does Chelsea do? Why, fall in love of course!"

This is a thoroughly enjoyable, well-crafted little book. Sure it's a formula but what isn't? As recipes go this is essentially macaroni and cheese, which means comfort food that stealthily cloaks actual nutrients like calcium and iron. It would have been fun if more of the story transpired in our heroine's natural cream puff habitat but, oops, there goes the plot if that happened right? Also, this book manages to lightheartedly battle sexism and classicism while being strangely poetic, with my favorite example of this being the reference to the red satin bodies of insects.

I've had this book since the 80s, and still pull it off the shelf to re-read it. Chelsea, the pampered princess nicknamed "Angel Face" by the captain of the football team, enjoys all the finer things in life. She does not understand her twin brother "Ranger" Rick's fascination with the outdoors, or her best friend's fascination with Ranger Rick. Chelsea has no interest in going on a river rafting trip down the Colorado River, but suddenly finds herself angry and offended when her family say they can't imagine she'd be able to survive the week without her curling iron.

Chelsea, despite her love of all things pink/soft/shiny, goes on journey of self-discovery. She becomes aware that she is tougher than she looks, and that not all boys are intimated by a smart girl. Chelsea not only survives the river, she develops a better more respectful relationship with her twin, and grows more confident in herself. She also falls for a great guy and begins her first real mature relationship, one based on respect, liking, and laughter.

Emblazoned on the book cover is a critical question at the forefront of Our minds:

Can a rugged river rat and a manicured cream puff find true love?

What follows is Tonya Wood's inquiry into this important matter, full of such gem-like quotes as "call me a reject in the era of women's liberation, but I enjoy nothing more than being handled--figuratively speaking--like a delicate piece of china by a tall, broad shouldered football player."

This book is--how does one say?--chicken soup for the cream puff's soul.

I read this book when I was 12, yes 12 and fell in love with the character. She's funny, witty, and a bit of a snob. She goes out on a limb to help her best friend, and because her brother said she can't do it.

I still read it every few years to remind me of when I was young. It's horribly worn out, but I absolutely love it.

"Never walk when you can ride, never sit when you can recline."

I read this book years ago, and I still remember the main character's motto and the crazy adventure she had falling in love.
