There's a bounty on Spider-Man's head and Norman Osborn is behind it! As if struggling with homework wasn't enough, Peter Parker must confront the villains who are seeking his life. Also, a chemically-altered boxer named Joe Smith may be stirring up trouble for Spider-Man.
Stan Lee (born Stanley Martin Lieber) was an American writer, editor, creator of comic book superheroes, and the former president and chairman of Marvel Comics.
With several artist co-creators, most notably Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, he co-created Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, Thor as a superhero, the X-Men, Iron Man, the Hulk, Daredevil, the Silver Surfer, Dr. Strange, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Scarlet Witch, The Inhumans, and many other characters, introducing complex, naturalistic characters and a thoroughly shared universe into superhero comic books. He subsequently led the expansion of Marvel Comics from a small division of a publishing house to a large multimedia corporation.
Last Ditko issue - so for me this is a book filled with an aura of sadness - all the Ditko villians that will never be. I have heard several different versions as to why Ditko left - but the main point that I take away is that the Lee/Ditko team still had lots more to give to fans. In my opinion it would have just been a matter of time before Ditko started looking into a darker side of Spidey.
Steve Ditko's last issue..he wasn't great with portraying women..but certainly produced some atmospheric and memorable panels in this series. Peter avoids a protest march...and other obscured view of Mary Jane.
Ladies and gentlemen, please join me in a toast as genius artist and Spider-Man co-creator Steve Ditko takes a bow and signs off the book. Its an anticlimactic exit as the only other point of note is that Ned Leeds is as much in the dark as Peter when it comes to Betty Brant's whereabouts after her sudden departure from The Bugle.
38 issues (more if you count the annuals and his seminal Amazing Fantasy #15) is a good run for any artist and we're left to wonder what would have happened in Spider-Man canon had Ditko remained on the book. Its over to Marvel legend (and my personal favourite Spider-Man artist) John Romita Snr. to craft the pages of Ol' Web Head next issue.
It feels quite action-packed, which is a plus, and we keep getting more and more piled on to the plate of poor Peter Parker. Overall, this tale of a poor schmo who accidentally gets rage fits and super-strength is a surprisingly enjoyable one, considering how the overarching narrative is woven around the singular adventure. I hope this is a sign of things improving again.
Not sure why I found this one so funny. Maybe it’s the whole “go crazy and beat people up and you’ll end up a star” thing that went down! Good story, though. I enjoyed it.
i actually really like this issue, with another page of lettering by artie simek. Sadly this is ditko's last issue but i'm excited to get to john romita sr.
