Tsugumi Ōba (Profile in Japanese: 大場 つぐみ), born in Tokyo, Japan, is a writer best known for the manga Death Note. His/her real identity is a closely guarded secret. As stated by the profile placed at the beginning of each Death Note manga, Ōba collects teacups and develops manga plots while holding his knees on a chair, similar to a habit of L, one of the main characters of the series.

There is speculation that Tsugumi Ōba is a pen name and that he is really Hiroshi Gamō. Pointing out that in Bakuman the main character's uncle was a one-hit wonder manga artist who worked on a gag super hero manga, very similar to Gamō and Tottemo! Luckyman in all aspects. Also that the storyboards drawn by Ōba greatly resemble Tottemo! Luckyman in style.

This book is bindup of Bakuman vol. 1&2, written by Tsugumi Ohba & drawn by Takeshi Obata. I haven't realized at first but they are the creator of Death Note. And come to think of it, I have the same issues with Bakuman as with Death Note.
(Side note, I actually liked Death Note when I watched it in high school, Bakuman tho...)

What I liked aka why not 1 star:

• the story is about two fourteen year old boys who want to be mangakas. We get to see how manga is created & published. I loved learning about the manga publishing industry.
• after each chapter we get to see the creative process of drawing manga pages from start to finish. It was fascinating.

What was ok:

• I was rather interested in seeing the friendship & creative partnership developing between Mashiro and Takagi.
• Miyoshi was great, she's the only likable realistic character in the manga.
• The style of the illustration isn't my favorite but it fits the story.

What was Not Good and Very Bad:

• the plot is rather ridiculous and the boys make these impossible goals to do everything so quickly. The manga has sports anime vibes, such as competitiveness, high stakes and character doing their best to improve their skills. However, in this scenario, it was exhausting.

• sexism. I can't with this manga and the way female characters are treated. Where's depth or any characterization? They are just pretty flowers on the back ground at best. Alsoreinforcement of patriarchal idealogy is not my thing. Main character literally thinks his dreams are more important than dream of his "beloved". The idea that women and girls are only good to be pretty and as a prize for male heroes after they succeeded.
I need to note that I consume majorly western media and I don't have cultural & societal context for Japanese stories. So let's say these issues are a deal breaker to me but it might not be objectively bad in original context.
(I have read manga and watched anime with complex female characters who have agency to do things on their own so I suspect it's Bakuman and Bakuman only fault that it's a trashcan...)

• the romance is the most ridiculous romance I've read. Is it supposed to be for comedic relief? Or to showcase the immaturity of the characters? I don't care either way.

• By the half of the book, I was bored and I finished it only because I'm stubborn and manga is easy to read.

I will recommend it only if you want to see how manga is published.
(Although, I'm sure there are documentaries about it out there, so maybe skip on Bakuman entirely)
