And we're still in Reiji's backstory that entwines more and more with the other characters. Kyuugo showed here how intricate yet clear built this story is. The way she leads us till this point is done in such a compelling way you cannot stop reading. This is definitely my favorite volume.

Tons of backstory in this one. I think that means we'll finally shift back to the present day in volume 6.

There's actually a lot of space given to the whole situation with Hisako (Reiji's sister) and Domoto (Masatsugu's father). It's pretty brutal, and graphic at points, with a lot more tangled up complexities than I was expecting. The main difference was that she'd "made the first move" - although everything after that pretty much played out as I'd thought. Basically, Hisako tried to use her body as the only tool she had to get Domoto alone and potentially vulnerable enough to take her revenge on. Except she still wasn't strong enough...or determined enough, I suppose, since she had a second opportunity later on, after the death of Domoto's wife, that he may or may not have let her follow through on.

Unlike her brother, I don't think Hisako really had the ability to take someone else's life, as much as she might want to. In the end, the only thing she had any control over was her own.

We also find out more about why Domoto saved his enemy's siblings to begin with: pretty much just for sport. He knew that they hated him, and he was interested in seeing how they grew up and what shape their revenge might take. I don't know if his wife was right that he might've just left them alone if they'd grown up in peace and left on their own, without perpetuating the hatred between their families. But it was probably inevitable for things to turn out this way.

There's also a little bit more about Ryuuji, Yuki's father and Reiji's older half-brother. He's easily one of my favorite characters, and his storyline is just devastating. It's still hard for me to tell at this point where Yuki's going to fit in and what Hyoudo's loyalties actually are. He took Yuki under his wing, which means he definitely had attachments to Ryuuji, but Reiji believes that he's still loyal to Domoto and would turn against Masatsugu when it came down to it. I suppose we'll see. He wasn't present in any of the backstory stuff in this volume.

The one piece I'm uncertain about now is what Masatsugu's true feelings towards Reiji are. From the previous volume, I'd thought they were in love...but while Reiji definitely is, Masatsugu's jump into the kiss felt...I don't know. Almost out of place. He'd rejected Hisako, so he wasn't interested in her in that way - or at least not when she was acting so little like herself - but does he care about Reiji in the same way Reiji does him? Or is he, like Hisako, using his body to get what he wants?

In this case, it's the only way he can keep Reiji safe. He's already had his face slashed up by confronting Domoto once. If he'd kept pushing, he wouldn't have lived much longer, no matter how much Domoto was enjoying their little games. By asking Reiji to live - for his sake - Masatsugu is able to get through to him in a way no amount of lecturing and pleading had managed before.

It's hard to say, I guess. All of these characters are living with so much guilt, and it's difficult to untangle the true feelings in the midst of all that.

"your face says you don't want to hear anymore. but please, i want you to listen, and i want it to hurt."

dalszy ciąg backstory bardziej interesującego niż główna historia, w końcu wszystko ma sens

4/5 stars. It’s 4 A.M. Someone please stop me. This is a really interesting manga, with very compelling characters and an intricate plot. Hisaki’s motivations, Reiji’s and Masatsugu’s are clear now. Now I understand why Masatsugu helps Reiji. Now I understand why Hisaki is in a coma. The way this all came together was really clear and precise. Now to see how Reiji and Matsugu will come into direct part of Yuki and Tetsu’s plot.

Masatsugu promises that he will avenge Ryuuji. I suppose that’s the promise that had to wait an additional ten years.

Ryuuji’s mother was separated from her son. And Reiji’s mother hated Ryuuji, she did not want the clan to have a bastard child, a child that wasn’t hers to take over some day.
Ryuuji left because he didn’t want to disturb his dad and his stepmom. But after Hisako and Reiji were born he visited and acted very formal toward his father, something with his father disliked. He treated him kindly as a son.

“The Ryuuji in my memories, was always smiling.”

When Reiji broke down because he processed he’d lost Ryuuji twice... damn.

Reiji went to the clan leader to ask to be a part of the yakuza and the man straight out said yeah, ok sure.

This parallels what Reiji told Jun... who’s... also kinda his nephew... damn. Anyway, he had talked about when people feel powerless they seek out a way to get that power. And that’s exactly what he did by becoming a yakuza.

“I think you’ve misunderstood. It’s not that I want revenge. I just want to be by your side. This time, I’ll protect you.”

They aren’t even the mc’s and they’re stealing the show. This development is exquisite.

Oh so Masatsugu’s father was a class A asshole. He only let Hisoka and Reiji live because they piqued his interest. Because they glared at him and he just wanted to know what would happen if they lived.

Ryuuji asked Masatsugu to be a better bigger brother figure to his siblings... excuse me I gotta go.

Hisako was pregnant. OH NO. With the old man, Masatsugu’s father. Oh no. Not the crusty old man.

Oh, Hisaki is in a coma because she jumped off her hospital window after Reiji found out she was pregnant. She didn’t want him to know she’s had a child with the man who’d killed their father.

I think there’s a very tragic aspect to Hisaki’s character. She planned to kill that man but instead became enthralled. It was a situation she couldn’t get herself out of, really. It’s a pity what happened to her.
