Abigail was arrested by the Council, and now she's awaiting trial for the decisions she made leading up to and culminating in the events of Raven's Peak. She is restless while she waits for answers and knows that there is a real threat outside their walls plotting to bring them down.
Meanwhile, Haatim is getting a crash course in this world he knew nothing about and finding out that nothing is as it seems.
There are dark clouds on the horizon and it is coming whether they are prepared or not. Will they be able to weather this storm?
Lincoln Cole is a Columbus based author who enjoys traveling and has visited many different parts of the world, including Australia and Cambodia, but always returns home to his pugamonster puppy, Luther, and family. His love for writing was kindled at an early age through the works of Isaac Asimov and Stephen King and he enjoys telling stories to anyone who will listen.
Abigail is back! Loved the first book. Fast paced and action packed, Cole keeps up the pressure as book 2 continues where book 1 left off. Abigail must stand trial and be judged by the Council. Haatim enters Abigail's world under Freida's wing and begins his training. The second book of the World On Fire series kept me gripped until the last page. Great writing, clever plot twists and an ending that leaves the story open to book 3... Thoroughly recommend this series.
Extending the Mystery and Character Development in this Second of the Series
Raven’s Fall is the second in the World on Fire Series by Lincoln Cole. One question readers often ask about a series is, do I need to read the books in order. In this case, I would highly recommend that you do. This work extends our understanding of a couple of the main characters, Abigail and Haatim, as well as our feel for the Council. The foundation in book 1 is important to these developments. And besides, you only need to see the acclaim book 1, Raven’s Peak is achieving, to know that it’s the place to start.
The first book used a formula featuring action, supported by some good character development and a touch of humor. Raven’s Fall, on the other hand, delves much more deeply into the mystery and suspense of our demon-plagued world. Most of this tension is created through the storyline, as unfinished thoughts and events that don’t quite add up fuel our interest. But there are also occasions where, for want of a better description, we’re told there’s a mystery. It occurs in conversations of the ilk, ‘you wouldn’t be mad if you understood. So tell me. No, I can’t, it’s too dangerous.’ These more blatant proclamations that there’s more than meets the eye are somewhat overused for my tastes. But most of the mystery is resolved by a strong, action filled finale.
I said ‘mostly resolved’ because the book does end with a cliff hanger. For readers that prefer books of a series that are self-contained, please be forewarned.
From book 1, it is clear that Abigail is somewhat reckless and clearly not bound by rules not of her making, i.e., the laws of the Council. In Raven’s Fall, we learn much more about how flawed she might be. Haatim, on the other hand, continues to adhere to his principles…at least for now, and achieves his successes through a combination of blind luck and knee-jerk reactions when he has no time to think. He also engages in a series of mental debates with himself, which is fine in principle. But sometimes, he goes back and forth so much that ‘paralyzed by indecision’ seems to fit his personality better than analytic. And some of the dialog also involves these protracted debates. When this happens, the story can drag a bit, but it generally moves at a good pace.
We also get a more complex view of the Council, which seemed largely stodgy and out of touch with reality in book 1. But in Raven’s Fall, it’s clear that their members are both more in-tune and more flawed than we might have thought. It almost gets to the point where picking the protagonist and antagonist from the cast of characters is impossible, they all have their pros and cons. Well, I guess the demons are always bad, but the good guys? Not so much.
Personally, I loved that fact. There’s no one white knight, which in thrillers is often the young, handsome Navy Seal turned brilliant neuro-surgeon after running an orphanage for 5 years. Raven’s Fall offers us a wonderful quagmire of personal strengths and weaknesses, abilities and flaws, good intentions, successes, and utter failures.
So, if you are a fan of stories of the occult and the battle between sometimes and in some ways good vs. always and utterly evil, you’ll love Raven’s Fall.
Really liked this book as part two of the three part series. I am very much looking forward to the finale that will be coming out later this month. If you are looking for a fast paced, fun read with well developed characters and demon hunting, this is your book!
This book picks up where Raven's Peak left off. Abigail is on trial for the events in that book and Hateem is training to fight like a hunter.
This book was almost nonstop action and plot twists. There are demons, just like the first book, but this time, we get a little plot twist by being shown the mysterious figure in the cave in Raven's Peak. I can tell you, I never saw that twist coming. The action is packed in this one, a little more than the first book. We have a high speed chase and that's the only info I'll give on that.
The trial ends up leading to another trial and betrayal. The book ends with a cliff hanger and I can only hope the next book drops soon so I can see how that last scene ends
This is book two in the series and if you haven’t read Raven’s Peak yet, go now and read it. Trust me on this: you’ll need the background information to keep up with everything that’s going on in this book.
Wow! This book has everything an adrenaline junkie needs: impossible situations, heroes destroyed, unknown enemy, demons, demon hunters, intricate fight scenes and a shocking ending.
Two things I loved about this book: the pulse-pounding action and a twist on the paranormal genre. Cole is a master storyteller, bringing you right inside each character and making you experience everything that’s going on. From the mysterious demon killing off Hunters in order to frame Abigail to the conflicting loyalties warring inside Haatim. The fight scenes are descriptive and realistic. The plot moves at a lightning quick pace but as a reader, you don’t notice it. You’re sucked into Cole’s world and there’s nothing you can do about it, not that you want to stop reading, mind you.
The twist on the paranormal genre is brilliant on Cole’s part. What happens when the demon hunter becomes the one thing they abhor? Do they stop hunting? Do they try to kill the demon inside? Cole leaves nothing to the reader’s imagination and it’s something I contemplated for days afterward.
Now, as many of you know, I detest abrupt endings. You may not care but it’s a pet peeve of mine. I’m all for a cliff-hanger ending, especially in a series, but to just end it in the middle of an intense emotional scene is just too much. I had to drop my rating from 5+ stars to 4.5 stars for this reason.
Lincoln Cole is one of my favorite paranormal authors and I wait with baited breath for the next installment. A must read for paranormal and horror fans alike!
Favorite Character:
Haatim. We get to see real growth and understanding as his character discovers more secrets and more deceptions. He tries his best to set Abigail free but when circumstances shred his world apart, he must swallow his fears and confront the real enemy: his father.
Wonderfully entertaining mix of action and adventure, together with a large helping of the paranormal.
Another thrilling, action-packed, roller coaster of a ride as Abigail and Haatim's adventure continues. This second book of the World On Fire series is a little more gruesome, so the squeamish may want to read with one eye closed!
Great characters, some terrific action sequences and a devious twist or two.
Cannot go wrong with this series. Now really looking forward to the next book. Highly recommended.
I rather cut straight to the point than waste it on my flowery language: after all, its pointers that matter to the reader as long as its sung close to their heart. Sadly, I didn't see my adrenaline rove for the second book, Raven's Fall, of the World on Fire series. The storyline was more focused on Haatim's training, Frieda's trial and Abigail's search, but one thing is certain: as long as Abigail keeps kicking the storyline has its defining moments. It's best to keep an eye toward the end, you wouldn't know when the bus will hit you!
I read this book immediately after reading the first book in the series. Trust me, I was a bit skeptical since I had read the first one with frequent breaks. However, this book turned out to be different and I read it in one sitting straight.
The plot deepens further and complications arise in the life of the protagonists. One is a demon hunter and the other a human. The storyline becomes clearer in this second book.
The narration is much more fluid with no jerks and breaks. Language is lucid. The writing is more continuous and makes up for the flaws in book one. The story creates loads of imageries. For a change I felt I was part of the story as it unfolds with me as a silent spectator.
The characterisation is much more definite and had clarity. They were projected as people with emotions and flaws.
To sum up, version 2 is much better and more refined than version 1. This story has a cliffhanger as well. Hence hoping for a more improved story, I have refrained from giving it five stars. Really worth reading. Lincoln is one author to watch out for.
P.S- The continuity and improved writing has piqued my interest in the series further. Really looking forward to the third installment. Thank you Lincoln. Raven's Fall was better than its peak.
Following straight on from Raven's Peak, Raven's Fall is the amazing Lincoln Cole's Book 2 in the World On Fire series and it tells of Abigail's trial, after supernatural forces killed Demon Hunters to frame her for treason and insurrection. Her mainstays in the fight for truth and justice are MC Haatim, a Hunter whose evil father Aram kept him secluded from the world for so long, until his son realised his father's true nature and fled from him; Frieda, a surrogate 'mother' to Abigail and Haatim and their supporters and Dominick who helps Frieda train the Hunters and toughen them up mentally for the battles to come. All the Demon Hunters must learn discipline, as is realised when some of them get into danger when going on an unapproved mission, courage under threat, self-reliance and unison with their fellow Hunters. A fast-paced, well-edited, free-flowing action story, that will leave the reader eager for Book 3!
With an introduction like Raven's Peak, Raven's Fall delves deeper into Cole's world. Fleshing out already well developed characters in the backdrop of the Swiss Alps. If you liked the first book, you'll love this one.
In the second installment, Raven's Fall, you pick up in the aftermath of Colorado. Facing enemies within alongside a familiar foe. This book smacks you in the face like a runaway train and love every moment.
I chose this rating because this second of three books started a bit slower than the first. Turns out that there is a reason for that. The first several chapters set you up to be slammed back in your seat by speed when the story takes off. I could barely keep up! If you like fantasy novels, you're fated to end up like me. It's 4:40 a.m. and I couldn't put this one down until it was done. Enjoy!
Abigail is under house arrest while the Council decide her fate. If she is found to be untrustworthy, she will be executed. Her please to find the person who tried to kill both herself and Haatim and got away with the dagger, fall on deaf ears. The Council don't know it yet, but they have a traitor in their midst. Frieda suspects him but has no idea as to the depth of his betrayal. Happy reading. Annemarie
Abigail Dresser is arrested by the and awaits trial to see if she is to live or be found guilty and be put to death. Haatim is being taught his gifts and how to use them. Meanwhile danger lurks for the city and council. I found the first half of the novel slow moving but then to start galloping along at a breakneck speed. This is a three book series that must be read in krder
I could not put the book down and am now anxious to read Book 3. I cannot help but marvel how well Mr. Cole describes the fight scenes, his imagination in creating the characters and events. I loved Raven's Fall as well as Raven's Peak. Will Abigail ever be truly free and happy? What will happen with Haatim? A must read.
I was looking for a book that would ensnare me and Mr.Cole delivered. Abi is a much loved hated character that returns in this tale. Despite the many injustices she is served she still does the right thing. Haatim is being schooled and has become more assertive in this book. Dominic was a new character but a favorite. Freida, just love a chick in charge.... Can't wait to read book 3
I cannot stress this enough, this book was an utter disappointment and a complete waste of my time. And I'm saying this after praising the first book (with all the things that was wrong with it). This story had potential, that's for sure, but things got out of hands here... not good enough. Not at all.
I am not going to go for the last book in the series. This is it for me.
Fun and exciting! The book picks up right after the events in Raven's Peak and continues with great character development and plot twists. I look forward to the third book in the series.
