Stan Lee (born Stanley Martin Lieber) was an American writer, editor, creator of comic book superheroes, and the former president and chairman of Marvel Comics.
With several artist co-creators, most notably Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, he co-created Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, Thor as a superhero, the X-Men, Iron Man, the Hulk, Daredevil, the Silver Surfer, Dr. Strange, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Scarlet Witch, The Inhumans, and many other characters, introducing complex, naturalistic characters and a thoroughly shared universe into superhero comic books. He subsequently led the expansion of Marvel Comics from a small division of a publishing house to a large multimedia corporation.
Talk about a bad hair day! Medusa is tricked into modeling for Heavenly Hair-Spray...and then Spidey gets tricked into fighting her for a publicity stunt for the company! This is a classic example of how Stan Lee 'connected' characters in the Marvel universe: a 'misunderstanding fight' that leads to characters bonding. On a more sinister note: Norman Osborn is becoming more 'goblinish' every day! Sidenote: anyone else notice how similar Medusa's costume looks like the new costumes for X-Factor - 18 years later!
“Medusa was my favorite Jack Kirby character among all those fabulous ladies of his. I had the nerve to create a new costume for her (“Never used again,” he said sheepishly), but what fun I had drawing that hair!” - John Romita Snr.
Enter Medusa of the Inhumans. Romita and Lee don’t wait about for introductions as Medusa is here from the opening pages “He who rules the proud and powerful Inhumans has sent me here… to learn whether the rest of mankind still fears us.. or whether we may at last rejoin the unthinking, suspicious human race!”. I am not quite sure why Medusa captures Spider-Man simply to deliver a monologue as she follows this up stating she has no interest in costume heroes as being reflective of humanity and disappears. Medusa quickly mingles with the citizens of NYC as she takes up the role as The Heavenly Hair Spray Girl..?!
Meanwhile Norman Osborn is being haunted by visions of the Green Goblin and Peter fails to reconcile with Gwen Stacy, which MJ takes in her stride “Little Mary Jane heard the good news! About you and Gwendolyne being pfffft! I knew you’d come to your senses sooner or later Tiger! After all… how long can a boy dig someone else when yours truly is on the scene?”. Gotta love her.
A so-so filler issue where the best parts are the side plots involving Peter's interesting supporting characters, as the Gween and Peter drama.
I like how they are slowly preparing the return of the Green Goblin through the last issues.
But the main plot is just an excuse to bring Medusa to confront spider-man upon the typical misunderstanding.
The excuse to bring her is silly, considering that Crystal has been living with the Fantastic Four lately.
I usually like Medusa, but this time she is too arrogant and annoying, prejudicing humans on the same issues that she complains humans prejudice them.
The artwork here is pencilled by Don Heck and Romita and looks inferior to last issues, especially on Medusa's hair (mainly compared to her depiction on Marvel Super-Heroes #15 of the same month).
This issue is a fun, if somewhat odd, detour as Medusa of the Inhumans arrives in New York on a mission to gauge humanity’s acceptance of her people. Naturally, this leads to a random battle with Spider-Man—because why not? The fight itself feels a bit forced, as Medusa captures Spidey just to give a monologue before deciding he isn’t worth her time and vanishing. And then… she becomes a hairspray model? Comics, everyone!
While the Medusa storyline is a bit flimsy, the real meat of the issue is happening in the background. Norman Osborn’s creeping memories of the Green Goblin continue to build tension, hinting at a looming threat. Meanwhile, Peter’s attempt to patch things up with Gwen goes nowhere, leaving MJ to swoop in with her signature charm and confidence. Her reaction to Peter and Gwen’s rough patch is pure MJ, and it’s hard not to love her for it.
Norman Osborn mulai ingat kembali tentang Green Goblin dan Spider-Man termasuk siapa Spider-Man sebenarnya.
