Author biographies are supposed to give you all those statistics, books written, awards won, etc. and I will, I promise...but first let me tell you about this ornery little tomboy (back then, the boys had all the fun...) who was always the one to make up the stories the neighborhood kids would "play". For those who came of age in the computer game era, this is something that was done usually in the backyard, by any number of summer-bored children, with props where appropriate. (Did you know a 55 gallon drum tied to a picnic bench makes a very cool horse?) It wasn't until much later that this tomboy realized two things: A) not everyone made up stories in their heads all the time, and B) in real life, the boys that had already had all the fun now seemed to always be winning.
But I digress. I was born on a farm down in Iowa....well, not quite, but close; Boone, Iowa is in the middle of farm country, but I arrived at a hospital. In a snow storm. Make that a blizzard. My sister tells me she knew my destiny when I was very young, because when I first saw the Disney classic Old Yeller, I was apparently so upset that I promptly went home and rewrote the story. In my version, the dog lived, of course. Should have been a clue.
Possibly in response to that blizzard I was born in, I've been a West Coaster since before I was a year old, and intend to stay that way. I have a history of staying. I started my first full time job right out of school (well, there was a very brief sojourn at a place where they made, among other things, burial vaults, but I prefer not to recall that one...) and stayed for twenty-one years. I've been married to the same wonderful guy for going on two decades now. We lived in our last house for seventeen years. (I won't even mention how many dumpsters we filled moving after that long....)
Readers seem as fascinated by my first career as they are with my writing. My time in law enforcement was many things, exciting, nerve wracking, and irritating, but most importantly never, ever boring. It was fascinating enough that I didn't think about writing seriously for several years. I kept a journal, and wrote long letters, collected quotes, mentally rewrote movies, and still made up those stories in my head, but never dreamed of actually writing for publication. I was having too much fun helping to catch bad guys, and being continually amazed at the situations people get themselves into. And eventually I walked away with a wealth of background and story ideas, and knowing some truly great people who work very hard to keep all of us safe. I'm proud to have been one of them, and I'm very aware that I have had the great good fortune of having had two jobs in my life that I love. Many people don't get even one.
But now that I'm in the delicious position of being able to make a living telling those stories in my head, I promise my readers two things: A) I'm staying--I'll keep writing as long as you keep reading, and B) in my stories, the girl--tomboy or not--always wins!

And now, the official stats:
Justine Dare Davis sold her first book in 1989, and followed that up with the sale of nineteen novels in less than two years. Her first four books were published in 1991, and she saw all reach the finals for either the Romantic Times Reviewer's Choice Award or the Romance Writers of America prestigious RITA Award. She has since won the RITA award four times, along with several Reviewer's Choice awards and three Career Achievement awards from Romantic Times. At the 1998 national conference, Justine was inducted into the RWA Hall of Fame, making her one of a very select group of just eight writers. She also had four titles on the Romantic Times "Top 200 of All Time" list. Her sales now total more than 45, and her books have appeared regularly on best seller lists, including the USA Today list. She has been featured in several local newspapers and nationwide by Associated Press, has appeared on CN
I have to say I find it amazing that we've come this far in the series and yet every book that comes out is equally intriguing and gripping. Hats off to Ms. Davis for this feat. The book had its sweet, funny, romantic moments and was also at times dark and emotional.
This time Cutter has directed his matchmaking skill to Liam Burnett, one of his closest buddy at Foxworth --an organization that helps people who have no one else to turn to.
Having read almost all books in the Cutter series, I've always liked the carefree, boyish-looking Liam with his cute Texas drawl, but I never imagined him to have a deeper side or for that matter to have such a profoundly deep romantic story, as amazingly depicted in this book.
Whoever has been following the series would definitely be aware of Liam's temerity to hack a secure organization like Foxworth which landed him in lock-up at the age of twenty and looking at serious jail time, but then Quinn Foxworth (H of the first book in the series Operation Midnight) gave him an out to go clean with an offer to join his outfit. Ever since Liam has not only become Foxworth's top tracker and tech expert, but also someone that Quinn would trust with his life.
I was glad to see Liam find someone sweet, smart and caring like Ria in his life. Their very first meeting was cute and amusing. Liam walking in on Ria --who'd come to Foxworth to meet Quinn--sweaty and shirtless after playing fetch with Cutter, and startled to see her, quickly yanks his T-shirt over his head.
Quinn couldn't help notice that his ace tracker, who always kept himself determinedly uninvolved where woman were concerned --had even overheard him warning Cutter once. Don’t you be turning those eyes on me, hound. I’ve tried that, and it always ends badly-- was totally smitten by the school teacher at the very first glance.
Ria too, is equally smitten by Liam at first sight. Not only has his bare leanly muscled body left a lasting impression in her mind, she also finds her imagination running wild for the first time, like running her fingers into his hair and mussing it. Then, there was Cutter to add his own bit into the mix, getting in Liam's way until he ended up sitting in the chair closest to Ria. She was puzzled by the exchange of looks between man and dog, little knowing that Liam was letting Cutter know he wasn't going to fall for his matchmaking.
She was brought by her student Emily Parker, who had been the inspiration for Quinn to make Foxworth official six years ago, after he'd recovered for the then ten year old a locket that belonged to her dead mother. It had been Quinn's favorite case and now six years later, the teen and her teacher are here to seek help from Foxworth for her close friend, Dylan, a bright and nice boy, who seemed to be in some trouble but wasn't willing to open up to Emily or Ria or anyone else at school.
At the end of the meeting, Liam finds he has to go back to school under the cover of a martial arts instructor providing after-school classes so that he could get close to Dylan and that Ria would be helping him all the way. It was funny to see how much of the discussion he'd missed out after Quinn gave the order because he was so distracted by the unsettling thought that the the petite teacher who put him off-balance was going to be in his world for a little while.
I found the whole school backdrop for the romance, with the students' ongoing curiousity whether their favourite teacher and the newcomer were dating, cute and amusing. Catching the two talking they'd tease, “Woo, Ms. Connelly’s got a boyfriend!”
Ria, who's had one bad relationship before, made no effort to hide the fact that she was interested in Liam, whereas he was doing his best to fight his attraction for her. But, a mere mention of her would get him all dreamy-eyed as Dylan brought it to his notice or he'd blurt out something he wasn't supposed to say like the time he was thinking of her scent reminding him of his mother's sweet roses
“And where did you go just now?” Ria’s voice cut into his memories and he snapped back to the present. “My mother’s rose garden, actually,” he said. It took her only a split second. She smiled as she lifted a hand to her throat. Where she’d put the scent? Need hit him like a blow harder than any Dylan had landed today. Need to breathe in more deeply, to get more of that fragrance. Need to touch that silken skin, as she was touching it. And yet he couldn’t seem to breathe at all, and he didn’t dare touch her. Not when simply thinking about it nearly sent him spiraling out of control. “I’m going to take that as a compliment,” she said quietly. He clamped down, grasped for control. Thought he had it. “Do. That garden was beautiful. And smelled as good.” He saw the faint rise of color in her cheeks. So much for control, he thought, wondering why the hell he’d said that. Because it’s true? that annoying voice in his head suggested.
On a serious note, Liam actually considered himself jinxed having lost three girlfriends to death because of his teenage mistakes and feared that Ria would meet with same fate if she got involved with him. But, Ria wasn't on the same page as him. She sneaks past his defenses and wears him down. Sadly, the morning after they gave in to physical intimacy, Liam's worst fears come back to haunt him when Ria is kidnapped along with Dylan's little brother, Kevin, and both of their lives are in danger.
The terror and battering the little boy had to face at the hands of the monster was so heartbreaking.
As always, it's nice to see characters from the previous books make appearances together and the Foxworth team putting their heads together to slay the monster.
Overall a thoroughly enjoyable read. Been waiting for long for Rafe and Charlie's story. Dying to read their story. Hope Ms. Davis is listening.
I really like books with dogs that either help solve the crime or are just likeable. In this book, the dog was a fantastic tracker but could also sense couples who should be together. They called him a matchmaker. And his matches often led to marriage. This time he had his eyes on Liam and Ria.
The girl who was the inspiration for the start of the Foxworth Foundation, went to them to ask for help for a friend. Emily was now sixteen, and she was worried about a classmate, Dylan, who recently lost his mother. Emily came with one of her teachers (Ria), who didn't expect them to help since this was not the type of thing Foxworth typically took on. No one seemed to be able to get through to this boy, so Liam was sent to the school to offer martial arts classes to the students. Since that was an interest of Dylan's, it was the perfect way to get closer to him. As Dylan became more comfortable around Liam, it was easy for Liam to see that Dylan was stressed by what was going on.
Liam and Ria are both attracted. Ria had been burned in the past, but she couldn't ignore how drawn she was to Liam. Whenever she looked at him, her imagination went wild. The effect on Liam was the same. Since they had to work together to get to the bottom of Dylan's problem, they had lots of time to get to know each other. It was sad that Liam was sure that he was jinxed when it came to love and fought his feelings for Ria. I liked how Ria was able to get him to open up to her. It was wonderful that she understood how he felt and gave him another point of view. After giving in to what was growing between them, he was terrified for Ria when she was in danger. Liam quickly got himself under control and focused on tracking the missing people.
I enjoyed this suspense and never suspected the villain. The final confrontation was terrifying, and I felt so sorry for Dylan's younger brother, Kevin. I loved Ria's trust that Liam would find them, as well as her efforts to help. The dog, Cutter, was great in this story. Matchmaking and all.
This was another terrific Cutter's Code book. It opens with a blast from the past, as the young lady who was the inspiration for the start of the Foxworth Foundation, returns to ask for help for a friend. Emily is now sixteen, and she's worried about a classmate who recently lost his mother. Emily brought along one of her teachers, who is somewhat skeptical as this is not the type of thing Foxworth is known for. I loved Emily's background story and Quinn's heartfelt statement about what they do. Liam was also in on the meeting, as he had been with Cutter when the women arrived. I loved how Cutter made friends with Emily and Ria then turned around and gave his people "The Look."
I've always liked Liam, who is the upbeat, charming tracker and techie. He also has a unique history with Foxworth, as he was recruited after hacking into Foxworth's systems. Liam had been on a bad path until Quinn pulled him off it. He's been a valued member of the team ever since. He has also been known for laughing as his coworkers fell to Cutter's matchmaking schemes, but also steering clear of any relationships himself. Here we learn that he has had three romances in his past, and each one has ended with the death of the lady in question. Liam blames himself for each one, and won't allow himself to risk another's life.
I liked the development of the relationship between Liam and Ria. Their meeting was amusing as they are both immediately attracted. Ria's been burned in the past, but her attraction to Liam hit her hard. She has a great deal of trouble reining in her imagination whenever she looks at him. The effect on Liam is even stronger. I loved seeing him totally unable to concentrate, losing his place in conversations, and with his imagination running wild. Since they have to work together to get to the bottom of Dylan's problem, there are plenty of opportunities to get to know each other. I ached for Liam who fought his feelings all the way, certain that he is jinxed when it comes to love. I loved seeing Ria get past his walls and get him to open up to her about his past. I loved his shock when, instead of being disgusted with him, Ria shows her understanding and then gives him another point of view. I felt his fear when, after giving in to what was growing between them, Ria ended up in danger. I loved how she trusted him and the effect it had on him. His big moment at the end was fantastic. I loved seeing his vulnerability, and his determination to give Ria the space he thought she needed after what happened. The hope that grew in Ria's heart as she listened to him was terrific, and I loved her response.
The suspense of the story was really good. I loved that the Foxworth team was totally onboard with finding out what was happening with Dylan. It was great to see Liam use the various types of martial arts as the hook to get closer to him. The class demonstration was terrific, and the scene with the bully was great. As Dylan became more comfortable around Liam, it was easy for Liam to see that whatever was happening, it was wearing hard on Dylan. The scene when Liam took Dylan to pick up his little brother was heart-wrenching, as was the confrontation when Dylan's father arrived at the gym during one of the lessons. That also set Liam's alarms going off and gave him a direction for his investigation. What he found out was not really a surprise. When he and Ria set plans in motion, it triggers an unexpected reaction. I was on the edge of my seat (and up way past my bedtime) as I followed the action. I liked the realism of Liam's panic before he got himself under control and did what he does best. The final confrontation was intense and terrifying, and I ached for little Kevin. I loved Ria's trust that Liam would be there and her efforts to help. Cutter, of course, was awesome.
Once Cutter," the smart alien in a dog suit" sets his eyes on you its over. You will have to do as he says or he will never let you live it down. So Liam knows he is in trouble once he realizes those eyes are on him. Cutter is the MOST valuable member of the Foxworth team and you will not get away with ignoring his wishes.
I am a huge fan of the Foxworth series yet somehow this one seemed more of a Heartwarming story than a suspense story. I loved the read but I felt that it was in the wrong category up until the last few chapters. Once I got to them I found the suspense in the novel. It is read worthy but do go looking at this book with eyes set a great suspenseful read.
A suspense novel without any suspense, this was more of a low-key mystery. That's fine, except most of the book was taken up with the MCs thinking the same thoughts over and over - about each other. "He's so hot, but he isn't interested in me..." "I can't fall for her, I can't fall for her..." It got tedious, and that's not why I pick up a book like this.
NB - In all fairness, I picked these up because I need a lot of letter Os for a challenge. But I like Romantic Suspense and I really enjoyed the first two I read - Operation Blind Date and especially Operation Reunion.
This was another fantastic Cutter’s Code book. It was nice to read more about Emily and the young lady she has turned into. Foxworthy started years ago because of her. Quinn vowed to find her locket that was stolen when her home was broke into. It was the only thing she had to remind her of her parents that had died. Now she is back hoping Foxworthy can help one of her friends. Dylan lost his mother not too long ago. He is now taking care of his little brother. Not going to spoil the book for you, but this is another emotional story. It also has action, suspense, and romance. I’m glad Liam got his own story. It was funny to see him arguing with a Cutter who is a very smart dog. Cutter seems to be a match matcher. Everyone knows it. Liam told the dog don’t look at me like that, Not going to happen hound~! I really enjoyed this book. It was a good read.
I loved this book and I may be biased on this as the forward for the book is about our puppy Dexter. We lost him and the author picked me to write the beginning about him. That was just so thoughtful and the book was also a wonderful read. I have read several of her books in this series and they are all good and very suspenseful with a dash of romance. This is a grand slam for Justine!
I did receive this book from the author for winning her contest about Dexter!
