I love a well-done second-chance romance, especially when it involves reigniting that old high school flame. Ry Morgan, the quiet identical twin of up-and-coming rodeo rider H.W., has left his brother in the big city, and he is ready for quiet life on the family ranch. While there he runs into his high school crush Avery, who used to be a champion barrel rider. Now she walks with a cane.
Ry is the strong, silent, self-effacing type, and in this book he was - dare I say it - kind of beta. Frankly, it was a good change to read about a quiet cowboy comfortable in his own skin. Even though he had problems, he didn't take them out on his friends and family, with the exception of his cantankerous relationship with his twin.
As she has healed from her accident, Avery has found herself trapped in her life, living at home, underestimated by her parents. She blossoms under the love and attention of Ry, and it was good to see.
At its core, this is the story of Ry and Avery learning to know each other again. As second-chance love stories go, it was okay. I was surprised at the ho-hum nature of the memories and flashbacks, which were few. In addition, Ry didn't seem to even know about Avery's condition. There was little from his perspective about exactly why he liked/loved Avery, except she seemed to "get" him despite his retiring nature. Their love was a quiet story, for the most part, and all the drama was supplied by H.W. and a family mystery involving Ry's mother and sister.
This is the third in a series, and despite not having read the other two I understood the who, what, where, when and why. This book can exist as a standalone.
The downside is that it dragged at times and these are not characters who will stick in my long term memory. However, it was a pleasant way to spend a few hours with some genuinely nice people, and the editing was pretty flawless. I'm glad they found their HEA.
Review For: The Last Good Cowboy by Kate Pearce 'The Last Good Cowboy ' by Kate Pearce is book Three in the "Morgan Ranch" series. This is the story of Avery Hayes and Ry Morgan. I haven't read the previous book so for me this was a standalone book. Ry has a twin brother HW who Ry has been leaving in his shadow it seems. Ry is moving forward to be more independent and taking steps back from HW. That has lead him to return home and to connect back with Avery. Ry has ended his Rodeo Circuit and wants to work on the family ranch more. Avery has always had a crush on Ry but when she was younger and the twin boys were 18 years old a misunderstand of sorts happened. Avery thought she had kissed Ry only to find that it was HW. This has caused hurt feelings with Avery. Now in the present day Avery is trying to deal with the lost of her career after an accident. Ry has decided make a life change also with Avery by moving forward with trying to have a relationship with her. Can they move forward and get past their obstacles to be together? This is the third book in the Morgan Ranch series. Technically, the books can be read on their own but I think the secondary storyline concerning the Morgan's missing mother is much better if you read all the books in order. And besides considering each of the Morgan men are very hot cowboys, why wouldn't you want to read all of the series? This book features Ry, one of the twins who are the youngest of the Morgan boys. Ry is finally trying to lie on his own without being in the shadow of his twin brother. Even if that means going home to the family ranch that brings back some rather painful memories. But it also means being closer to his high school crush, Avery. So while Ry needs to deal with his difficult past, Avery needs to deal with the fact that a life altering accident years ago is in many ways still impacting her daily life. Avery and Ry make a great couple in that they are able to complement one another and help each other with their personal issues. Overall a great contemporary romance that ends with a surprise visit that definitely has me wanting to read the next book!
I jumped right in the middle of the series with a new author for me, but that didn't slow me down a bit. It was easy to figure out what was going on and what had happened in the past. And I liked the complex, dysfunctional family of the brothers, their girlfriends, their father, and their grandmother. It was an interesting mix of people, who clearly cared for each other and were trying to forgive the past to make a better future. The only one that I found hard to like, and I believe that was done on purpose, was Ry's twin HW. His arrogance and selfish actions were hard to tolerate at times, yet the more insight I got to him, got to know him, his actions started to make sense, in an odd way, at least there was a reason behind them. Ry was truly a good guy. He had been the peacemaker all his life, looking after his twin. He had a rough going as a child with their mentally ill mother. Coming home to work at the ranch brought all those memories back about the torture he suffered at the hands of his mother, resulting in nightmares and flares of temper. Ry was the good guy, easy to understand and like and cheer for. Even though HW was supposed to be the charming twin, for me Ry was the one with alluring personality and charisma to win over my heart. His attraction to Avery was passion filled yet sweet and adorable. He obviously not only desired her, he liked her, trusted her, and leaned on her when in need of support. At the beginning of the story, I admired Avery, her bravery, her spunk, her determination to make it after the accident. But - and here is where my points for the story started to drop - she wasn't a very pleasant person. At first, she was negative, turning everything to be a conflict instead of a compliment. And then there was the pull and push, the hot and cold, she was all in and all out, and even though she did and said something out of order she made Ry grovel and apology when he didn't do anything wrong! And this just went on and on again and again, until I started to wonder if Ry would be better off with someone who wasn't so difficult to be around with. The story's focus is on the life in the small town, the upcoming wedding, and the disturbance HW created for the family, and mostly the subplot running through the series with the mother of the family who had been assumed dead for a long time. The developing romance between Avery and Ry is well immersed into the story and the twists in the plot. I found it hard to trust that the turbulence Avery created to the developing romance wouldn't happen again, but they did find a moment's peace towards the end, yet the family drama ends in a cliffhanger. This was a good story with complex characters, it just had a little too much angst and drama to my liking. I understand that Avery had gone a severe trauma with her accident, but with the picture the story gave of her, I expected her to be a more stable person with fewer insecurities and self-doubts. Those added to the turmoil in Ry's family, there was just too much unnecessary drama and misgivings in the tale. ~ Three Spoons with a teaspoon on the side
I received an advanced copy of this book from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you! The expected publication date is April 25th, 2017.
I must be upfront before continuing on with this review. I broke my rule to read this story. While I read a wide variety of genres and consider myself open minded, I do have a pretty set in stone rule about avoiding any novels with the word cowboy in the title. Other words I stay away from are rogue, billionaire and usually any reference to royalty of any kind. In my head I have (perhaps unfairly) ranked them all as too cheesy to consider. I'm not sure why I broke from tradition on this story however I am really glad I did as I enjoyed this one.
This is the third story in the Morgan series. I had not read the first two prior to reading this, perhaps because they had cowboy in the title, so it is safe to say that this can be read as a stand alone. That being said, there is a sub plot that appears to be a continuation from the previous stories. Although it does not necessarily impact the enjoyment of this one, it certainly made me curious about what came before.
To be honest, not a lot happens in this story and that is ok. It is really a story about two people coming together while each trying to battle/conquer the ghosts of their past. Both Ry and Avery were likable characters that I was rooting for from the beginning. The fact that the backdrop of the story centers around a small town held additional appeal for me. It is nice when the characters all know each other and look out for each other. The relationship between the brothers also held my interest.
My guess is that there will be at least one more story in this series (maybe more) as there is still one more brother. There is also some loose ends concerning the back story that has occurred throughout the series. I think I would like to see the remainder of this series through!
So.....if you are like me, put aside your prejudice surrounding cowboy series, ignore the terrible book covers and just give it a try. You may just be surprised.
The Last Good Cowboy by Kate Pearce Morgan Ranch #3
Ry is ready for a change. He has been with HW, his identical twin, from the cradle to the moment the book begins and while HW still has his sights set on the rodeo national championships Ry is ready to head home to Morgan Ranch. So that is just what he does. He settles into ranch life and work like a duck to water and realizes that he is finally doing what he should be doing when he starts having flashbacks and nightmares.
One of the first people Ry meets when he gets home is Avery, the girl he had a crush on through most of school. She sustained severe injuries while competing in a rodeo event and though still not 100%, and probably never will be, feels a bit hemmed in due to overcautious parents that seem to swaddle her in protection. Avery’s job working in her parents’ hotel doesn’t give her a lot of time to spread her wings but with Ry in town her life, and his, is about to change.
With major alterations in the works for the ranch, a wedding to be planned a missing mother and sister being looked for, Ry’s nightmares, Avery’s equine phobia, sibling issues in the Morgan and Hayes families, and HW’s aspirations & advertising there is a whole lot going on in this delightful third installment of the Morgan Ranch series, a series I am eager to continue reading. I am impatient to find out how HW does in the finals, wonder what might happen on the ranch, am curious about a few other Morgantown citizens and am interested in finding out what happens next.
Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Books – Zebra for the ARC – This is my honest review.
My favorite of the series so far. I adore second chance stories. I love both of these characters. I'm so delighted Kate wrote this story about how they grow to trust each other and become each other's cheerleaders. Kate is so good at crafting characters and how love can mend and transform their souls. Through all this she weaves the healing of the family fracture so creatively. Just love it!
Ry is a twin. He and his brother traded places often and very few people could tell them apart. Avery could, she watched them. She knew the quieter one, not the show off was Ry. She was younger than them. When the other twin steals a kiss from Avery when she thinks it's Ry, everything is ruined. Ry comes from a fractured family and he and his brother take off at graduation for the rodeo circuit, never to return home. Time passes. Ry's brother becomes a star of the circuit and Ry doesn't. He's finally just done with it all and goes home. And there's Avery, also lost. She was a really good barrel racer and got hurt. She's walking by sheer willpower. Ry is blown away by her strength and determination. She falls for his loving heart. Awesome story.
Thank you Kate and Kensington for giving me the opportunity to read and review this series. It's a privilege.
I've said it before and I will say it again, I love these Morgan boys! This is the third installment of the Morgan Ranch series and we get the story of Ry Morgan, one of the twins. Ry is at a crossroads in his life and has made the decision to quit the rodeo circuit and move on with his life at the ranch. His twin, HW, is not happy about it and that causes strife between the two. But, Ry knows it's now or never and he needs his own life away from his, at times, toxic twin. And when Avery Hayes comes back into Ry's life, well, it's finally the perfect time for him to sweep the girl of his dreams off her feet!
I just love this series. I feel like I'm reading about real people. Of course there is drama a plenty in this installment. Ry is especially sweet and the patience and kindness he shows to Avery will melt your heart. Avery is a great character, her injuries have left her battered and broken and just coasting along, until Ry pushes her to take risks again and start living. There are also more family secrets that come to light as the brothers continue their search for their mom. And Ruth, she is the icing on the cake, such a great character. As always I'm left anxiously awaiting what is next for the Morgan Brothers and the people of Morgan City!
***I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publishers through Net Galley***
*A copy of this book was provided by the publisher via NetGalley and I'm freely giving my honest review.*
Another good story from this author and there must be more because the ending......oh, but the couple got their HEA don't worry.
Avery had to say goodbye to her career because of a serious accident and is now working at her parents hotel. Ry comes back to the Morgan farm leaving his twin and the wild living. He wants peace and quiet and he wants Avery, but can he convince her of that?
I love the Morgan men and I love the writing style of these books, it's easygoing and fun. The lack of unnecessary descriptions of surroundings and right amount of dialogues makes it joyful to read.
There is a lot of feelings from the past driving Ry to act the way he does towards his twin, a lot of guilt and shame. How bad it is will be revealed throughout the story. Avery has a way of handling his challenges that's helping him cope with it. There are som good love scenes that's not over the top hot but good and sweet.
One of the things I enjoy very much is the potential of stories to come with all the secondary characters. I hope for HW's story next, and of course Rachel's.
If you like a good looking, caring, protective cowboy and his great family you will enjoy this series. Even if each book can be read as a standalone I recommend reading it in order.
Another great book in the Morgan Ranch series! I read the first book but somehow missed the second book in the series, however it did not take away from this book.
It was great to see Ry come into his own and come out of his brother's shadow. While him and Avery have a past, I was pleased that the author did not rely too much on this given the number of years that had passed.
Just like with Ry, it was great to read Avery becoming her own person. After a heartbreaking injury ended her career and changed her life forever, she's surrounded by people who treat her with kid gloves. Everything changes when Ry challenges her beliefs and what she can and can't do.
I have really been loving these Morgan brothers and Ry is no exception. Avery and Ry are so sweet together and they are each good for the other. Avery is trying to break away from her overly protective family while Ry is trying to rebuild ties with his family. They also have a bit of history to get past but they never give up on each other and in the end they find their safe place to land in each other.
This is a very well done series and book and getting to know the Morgan has been so much fun. Can't wait for HW's story. I highly recommend this one.
Achingly Sweet. The Last Good Cowboy by Kate Pearce is EXACTLY as described. Ry is absolutely a wonderful man. Avery needed a man just like him to pull her out of her downward spiral and the two together were just so sweet. Sad at times but super tender too. Kate Pearce is a great writer. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC in exchange for a honest review.
RY Morgan has come home back to the ranch and has left his twin HW on the rodeo circuit. He is still working things out between his twin brother but he is glad to be back home on the ranch. Also he is looking forward to seeing Avery Hayes who he had a crush on through school, but does not know that she is working through her rodeo accident, that has left her with deep scars physically and emotionally. Fighting off people’s pity she has only a few friends and does not go out, and getting on a horse has not happen since the accident. RY is still dealing with HW and also dealing with the memories of being home and the night there mother took off. More so now since Chase, and Blue are looking for her through a private investigator. You also have the wedding that everyone has been looking forward to between Chase and January finally. But before you get there the family conflict between RY and HW and then Avery and her sister who has come home after graduating from college really throws them all for a loop. Between the two families there is plenty of drama. Then HW adds more drama to the mix which makes for the story to go to another level for the Morgan family and you really find out a lot about the mom and how RY was treated by the mother. The wedding finally does happen only takes three books. My biggest issue with this book is the ending. With the last book you knew where the two main characters stood Blue and Jenna, in this one at least for me it is you are not sure and RY leaves the ranch, and when you get to the last page it is a recipe for roast beef. I am all for a good roast beef, but what I really wanted was some type ending or nibble that makes me want to remember to look for the next book. Other than that it was good. I got this book from Netgalley.com Follow us at www.1rad-readerreviews.com
This series isn't so much romance as family drama, Dallas-style, with happy endings and occasional cliffhangers. I... don't love that. Like its predecessor this one starts out strong - I like Ry, I like Avery - but then, as it becomes necessary to (a) wrap up all the interfamily conflicts so that everyone ends up as one big, happy family at the end and (b) explore Ry's repressed childhood trauma, I get annoyed. Avery's family issues - overprotective parents, a spoiled sister - are not so much resolved as ignored. Ry's twin brother just kind of shows up and is forgiven, despite the fact that some of his behavior was really beyond the pale. (I have issues with the fact that in high school he pretended to be his brother in order to kiss Avery - her first kiss - and now doesn't even remember doing it and just kind of laughs it off. This is gross on a level that the author and her characters never acknowledge. I don't think he ever apologizes - it's like it's not even worthy of an apology which, um.) Over all, it's an interesting world but plot-wise kind of a disappointment. And the suspense plot involving their missing mother is just... not well handled, and the more we learn about what was going on with her the more disappointed I am that it's clear that .
These books were awesome! Each of them a nice read developing each character and their storyline. *********SPOILER ALERT******
I will admit that there's a family story that went on each of the books. The Part was about the possibility of their Mom being alive so they could have their questions answered. The Author chose for her not to be alive. I have to say I'm disappointed in that decision.
I've been following this series from its inception and been drawn into the lives of the Morgan family, their problems, their relationships with one another, their childhoods, their love lives, and the workings of the family ranch slowly becoming a travel getaway for tourists, and I expected the same from this third installment in the series, but sadly, this novel just didn't involve me in way the previous two novels in the series did, and I can only give it a 3-star rating, since I liked it but didn't love it.
I'm a fan of second-chance romances, but when Ry Morgan finally has had enough and leaves his self-centered, self-indulgent, rodeo bronco riding twin brother, HW, with whom he's been traveling the rodeo circuit and looking after for years, and returns home to Morgan Ranch, I was excited to learn who was waiting back home for him. That person was Avery, his sort-of high school girlfriend--sort-of because as the novel slowly progresses, we come to realize that it wasn't much of a high school romance at all, especially after Ry took Avery to the senior prom and found her kissing H.W., who was pretending to be Ry.
After high school, Avery, who loved to ride, also involved herself in the rodeo circuit as a barrel racer, until a terrible accident left her body and spirit broken, her racing career over. Many surgeries followed for the next four years, and although she can manage to get around she's not too steady on her feet, she's now terrified of horses, scarred, and simply existing as she works at the family B&B in Morgantown, at least until Ry is back in town.
Ry is the epitome of every good, honest and true cowboy I've ever encountered in a novel or a film. The strong, silent type. He's happy to be back at the ranch, doing what he loves, without having to chase after his brother, whom he both loves and somewhat resents, since his mother, who disappeared 20 years ago, made him promise to always look after her favorite twin, H.W..
The relationship between Ry and Avery takes a long time to develop, and although there are sex scenes in the novel, they don't seem to generate much heat, nor does their person-to-person contact. Much of the novel centers around Chase (Ry's brother) and January's upcoming wedding plans (previous novel), Avery's job at the B&B and as event coordinator for the wedding, and Avery's sister, who just graduated college and wants to replace Avery at Morgan Ranch. Then, there's H.W., who pops up regularly and who would happily guilt Ry into returning to the rodeo circuit. There's also Avery's fear of horses, and Chase's search for their long-absent mother, and there are lots of complications on the rocky road to a romance, which slowed the pace of this novel to a crawl, and which didn't ever seem to really grab me and draw me in. Ry is far too closed-off emotionally and reluctant to talk about his feelings, and, when he does, it was the least romantic scene I've read in years. Avery's own admission was equally lacking emotion and depth.
Of the three novels in this series so far, this was my least favorite and I'm hoping that Ms. Pearce's subsequent Morgan Ranch novels are more emotionally satisfying and offer more depth than The Last Good Cowboy. Ms. Pearce is an excellent and skilled writer, and has created a family and a town that are memorable and which have the potential for real drama, and have so many possibilities for future novels, especially with the surprise twist at the end of this one, but sadly, this novel wasn't all that deep, all that involving, or all that memorable. Finally, while this novel works as a standalone, I'd advise readers to start this series at the beginning because the complicated relationships in this family, it's history, and it's characters will otherwise be very confusing.
I voluntarily read an advance reader copy of this novel and received no compensation for doing so. The opinions expressed are my own.
Ry Morgan has had enough of following and supporting his brother on the rodeo circuit, so he's decided to return home and help out on the family ranch. Even though, nightmares plague him because of what happened years ago to make their mother leave. Still, he's determined to overcome his pain, even if he has to face the past for that to happen. Luckily, he has Avery Hayes -- the one hometown girl he's never been able to forget -- in his corner, otherwise he might find himself drowning in the past. Will they be able to help each other face the hurts of their pasts, so they can have a shot at happy ever after?
Ms. Pearce is a new-to-me author, but after finishing this story I'm determined to go back and read the previous books of this series. The Morgan brothers are an interesting bunch of sexy men that love their women dearly, but they're also dealing with a situation that has them at odds with how to proceed. Ry doesn't know whether he wants to pursue the course of action that the rest of his brothers do, because of the things his mother did to him. Yet, at the same time, he needs closure. Will he get the answers he's looking for?
As for the main characters, both were compelling and I loved their growing relationship, as the hero isn't afraid to push the heroine when it comes to closing herself off and not seeing the positive to her accident. Seriously, it could have been a lot worse for her. Moreover, I liked how the heroine blooms throughout this story with Ry's help. She proves how strong and brave she is by overcoming her fear of how she got hurt and I liked her determination to reach for something other than working at her parents hotel, as her parents are too over-protective and worry about her too much. Really, her parents concern felt a little stifling from the heroine's point of view.
While the hero, he goes through a lot in this story too. Being at odds with his twin is something that's never happened, and I could understand why he needed to escape his twin's world and the rodeo life. His twin seemed a bit self-absorbed, needy and I liked that Ry started standing up for what he wants instead of continuing to always be there for his twin. Furthermore, I felt sorry for him when he was torn between wanting answers about the past and not wanting to confront it. How could his mother treat Ry the way she did? He and his twin were equals.
Overall, I really enjoyed this third book of Ms. Pearce's Morgan Ranch series where the chemistry between this couple was delightful, intense and illustrated how much these two needed each other in their lives to help the other overcome the hurts of their pasts. The way this story ended had me cheering for this couple's happy ever after, because Ry and Avery deserved all the happiness in the world. However, it was right at the end of this book that has me looking forward to the next story of this series. Whose story will it be? I would recommend The Last Good Cowboy by Kate Pearce, if you enjoy the friends to lovers trope, or books by authors Donna Michaels, Kathleen Bell or Anne McAllister.
This is the first time I've read a book from this author and the first time reading a western romance that wasn't paranormal. Now just because it's not a paranormal story, doesn't mean I wouldn't like it. With that said, I had a very hard time getting into the book. The story premise was interesting, so it wasn't necessarily about that. It just wasn't holding my attention enough. Not to mention the story just seemed to be missing a lot of backstory. (Like I'm missing a book or three from the series.). I was getting confused with a few things being said, so, I did a little research and found that there are a few books in this series. So, I stopped reading this one to get the other book(s). Again, unfortunately, I just couldn't get into the story so it took me a very long time to get started.
In this book, the main character, Ry, has come back home from the rodeo, where he ruled the spotlight. However, Ry is thinking on just leaving it behind. Besides, there's new and young blood that showed up doing a bang up job of beating Ry out of the spotlight. So quitting now seems like good timing. But what about his family. Will they understand? Have they forgiven the past interviews he'd done where he didn't hold his tongue? And let's not forget the woman he cares about is now with one of his brothers. Will everything work out okay, or will everything just crash down on and around him?
However, and unfortunately, this book was very difficult for me to stay in it. My mind kept drifting. Is that because of the book or just me having too much on my mind? I'll be honest and say both! All in all I just couldn't stay in the story and therefore, couldn't finish all the books in a timely matter for a review.
In all honesty, whether recommending this book or not, I would highly suggest you read the other books first to get a full feel of the family dynamics. But, if you haven't read the other books first, and you can overlook this issue, I'd say go for this series. It's a decent read. But, if you can't overlook this issue and you really don't want to need to get The other books in this series, then I suggest you skip this one.
Avery, a retired barrel racer, is "stuck" in her life. Forced to alter her dreams due to an injury sustained while racing, Avery lives a quiet, safe life as the hotel coordinator of her family's hotel. Her parents coddle her and treat her as a fragile piece of china that may break at any moment. Without realizing it, Avery has accepted this as her life and doesn't EVER step out of her comfort zone.....until Ry comes into town.
Ry Morgan is the youngest of four boys. He and his indentical twin, HW, left the ranch at 18yrs old to pursue dreams of making it to the National Finals Rodeo. HW is driven, but reckless and allows people to use him. Although Ry no longer wants to continue with the rodeo, he feels as though he has to stay because he promised his mom to always look out for HW. After one too many parties, Ry decides he's had enough and returns home to help Chase turn their ranch into "the ultimate" dude ranch. Upon returning home, Ry runs into Avery. Ry has always liked Avery, but doesn't know if she'll give him a chance due to a stupid stunt HW played on her in high school.
This novel takes you on an emotional ride. The Morgan brothers find out the mom and sister they thought were dead, may actually be alive. Chase and BB decide to search for them, not knowing that Ry suffered their mother's abuse as a child. Ry struggles with his flashbacks, but finds solace with Avery. Ry also helps Avery "live" again. He gently challenges her to do things, like ride a horse again, that are way out of her comfort zone. Avery and Ry's road to happiness isn't without struggles, but it makes their bond that much stronger.
I truly enjoyed this novel. Kate Pearce is a new author to me, but I can't wait to go back and read the first two novels in this series. I'm also intrigued as to what Rachel's story will be as we catch a glimpse of her at the end of this novel!!! I read a gifted copy and all opinions stated are my own.
This was a pretty good addition to the series, although I found it to just be ho hum on the romance side. I was more interested in the 'finding their mom' part of the plot (that was a bit of a letdown in the end).
Ry is one of the Morgan twins and is now back at the Morgan Ranch helping out. His twin, H.W., is a rodeo star and is a bit of a drama queen and loose cannon it seems, so Ry finally says 'enough' and leaves his twin to deal with his own messes for a change. Avery works at her family's hotel as their event manager. She suffered a terrible horse accident several years ago during a barrel racing competition. Since then, she's kept herself closed off from a lot of people.
Way back when they were young, both Ry and Avery had crushes on each other, too bad H.W. ruined that for them. Now they're back in the same town and they give rekindling that relationship a go. The romance was pretty lacking though. It seemed as though they went from 'Hey, I use to have a crush on you, you want to go out sometime?' to 'Let's get it on in the horse barn.' There was no build-up and the relationship felt shallow. Avery had big insecurities and really kept letting her brain get in the way of her heart. I wasn't her biggest fan. I get that she was trying to overcome her fear of horses and get back into the land of the living, I had no faults with that. But she did kept taking it out on Ry and running away from him. It was just really frustrating.
I really liked Ry. He was just a good ol' boy with a big heart. Sure, he said some stupid things as well when he was having flashbacks from when he was 5 (that was a crazy story). But he stuck with Avery despite her being a bit of a B at times.
The ending was pretty abrupt. They're at Chase & January's wedding and then someone shows up they weren't expecting it (I was). I'm not sure who the next book is even about, maybe H.W.? That was a bit of a disappointment. Oh well, I'll still read it.
This is the third in the series but my first. And while I got a great feel for Ry and Avery’s romance I do wonder about what I missed. I know that there is some history with Ry’s mother, as it comes into play here and is obviously not new, but I’m not sure if the twin’s relationship was developed any in the other stories. There are definitely all sorts of undercurrents and issues that come up. Plus there are some obvious bits of drama with the dad and something happened with one of the brother’s having a daughter, but they aren’t truly critical to this story.
Ry is done following his brother around and he’s ready to return home because the life that they’ve been leading isn’t making him happy. There’s an even bigger positive side to it – being home puts him back in the sphere with his high school crush.
Avery’s life has changed since Ry went away. An accident took away her rodeo career but she didn’t let it keep her down. Unfortunately those around her still tend to baby her and she’s tired of it. A chance to plan a wedding at the Morgan ranch gives her that chance to get out on her own … but it also puts her near Ry. And while she had a crush on him too, she’s not that confident girl anymore. I loved seeing Ry work at proving to Avery that she’s even stronger than she thinks she is. He’s got such understanding of what she needs and how to support her. If she’ll let him :)
The Morgan family drama is a pretty big piece of the story and provides motivation for a lot of what Ry does. Once we get all of the details it is pretty heartbreaking but definitely something that the boys all need to face. There is a tiny bit of a cliffhanger at the end, setting up to where the next book will go, but there is a happy ending for Ry and Avery.

RY Morgan has come home back to the ranch and has left his twin HW on the rodeo circuit. He is still working things out between his twin brother but he is glad to be back home on the ranch. Also, he is looking forward to seeing Avery Hayes who he had a crush on through school but does not know that she is working through her rodeo accident, that has left her with deep scars physically and emotionally. Fighting off people’s pity she has only a few friends and does not go out, and getting on a horse has not happened since the accident. RY is still dealing with HW and also dealing with the memories of being home and the night their mother took off. More so now since Chase, and Blue are looking for her through a private investigator. You also have the wedding that everyone has been looking forward to between Chase and January finally. But before you get there the family conflict between RY and HW and then Avery and her sister who has come home after graduating from college really throws them all for a loop. Between the two families, there is plenty of drama. I am all for good roast beef, but what I really wanted was some type of ending or nibble that makes me want to remember to look for the next book. Other than that it was good. In a society where people consider the house they live in as an investment that can be bought and sold as the need arises there is little understanding of how farmers and ranchers whose families were born, lived and died on the same plot of land for generations and even centuries feel an attachment to their land. It’s not so much that they feel they own the family farm as it owns them.
A similar attachment surrounds a family of brothers who were raised together in this setting. Confining pubescent adolescent testosterone in a small space can result in rivalries and rough and tumble among boys in a large family but whereas they may fight with one another, tease, and try to out do; when it comes to those outside the pack it’s us against the world.
Even more preternatural is the otherworldly bond that exists between identical twins. They communicate on levels that transcend language and distance. They understand each other on levels that appear uncanny. Add the joys and vexations of sharing a single identity, being mistaken for one another, and a lack of individuality. Ry and HW are one such pair. When the time comes to go their separate ways it’s as if each has lost a piece of himself. HW feels a sense of betrayal and Ry feels a sense of guilt even as he rejects a continued association with his twin’s antics.
Moving back home to small town living is a mixed blessing. Like knowing that grandma Ruth will have heard all about it before you get back from a night on the town.
Wow, another great addition to the Morgan Ranch series. The Morgan brothers are all definitely hot & definitely troubled. Ry & Avery were once really good friends but an act of stupidity by Ry's twin & distance changed all that. Now Ry is back on the ranch, trying to get his head on straight & start a new life. Avery is still slowly recovering from a life threatening barrel racing accident, she's slowly getting back to life even though she's being smothered by her overprotective family. Ry & Avery start a friendship that slowly turns into a relationship. With a wedding coming up & the Welcome Centre for their soon to open Dude ranch, the ranch is bustling & offering Avery a new challenge. With a part of Ry's family past coming to a close with many unanswered questions & one question still out there, we see the brothers slowly coming back together & their family being put back together one piece at a time. We also see Avery standing on her own two feet & taking back her life & love for Ry. It was good seeing the continuation of Chase & January as well as Blue & Jenna, Billy & grandma Ruth & Roy. Looking forward to the next book, I'm just not as sure who it's going to be now because of a surprise at the very end as I was at the beginning. Definitely recommend this book. This book was an ARC from Net Galley for an honest review.
"The Last Good Cowboy" is as good as I would expect from Kate Pearce. Although the next in the 'Morgan Ranch' series, each book stands on its own and is so darn good! Ry and Avery's story was such a warm hearted story with a H and h that we could really rally around. Ry was such a gentle kind caring man, that he will win you over in the first few pages. Watching both Ry and Avery beat their demons, with the help of family and each other, just enriches an already really great series. We also got to see the more of the backstory of Ry and his siblings progressing just a bit more, and see just what is behind some of their actions. There is a bit yet to be solved in the overall backstory of the 'Morgan Ranch', but each story will leave you with a warm feeling if you are looking for that HEA of the cowboy hottie! This may be my favorite of the series, but overall it would be hard to pick just one. I look forward to reading HW's story this winter in the next 'Morgan Ranch' book! I would like to thank NetGalley and Kensington/Zebra books for gifting me "The Last Good Cowboy". My opinion is my own. This is mine 5 Stars!
This is book 3 in a series. The Morgan brothers didn't have it easy growing up. Their mother disappeared with their baby sister when they were all young, their father started drinking and left them to be raised by their Grandma Ruth. Chase Morgan took on the role of Father for his 3 younger sibling until he went to make a name for himself, Blue joined the marines, and the Twins Ry & HW went into the rodeo. They all left the Morgan ranch to get away from the past. Now Grandma Ruth is bringing them back one by one to turn the Ranch around and make something of it. Ry is tired of being his twins shadow, tired of having to take care of his brother, and tired of being on the road. He heads back the Morgan ranch to rebuild relationships with his two brothers and find his place in the family. Ry & Avery (sort of) have a past and hes never been able to forget her, but now shes the wedding planner for the Morgan ranch, and maybe their new events planner too. Will they be able to come together while each of their lives is changing?
Ry is an identical twin and at times that is more of a pain than anything. He has always love Avery Hayes until his twin screws it all up for him or at least that's what Ry thinks. Until he comes back to town after a fall out with his twin. Avery and Ry run into each other on his family ranch. He is in aw of the fact that he may get another chance with Avery. He never thought he would ever get another chance to see her let alone talk to and date her. Ry is normally a calm guy but when his life hits the fan he is not the calm, cool and collected guy anymore. Avery has not been the same since her. accident 4 years ago. Her parents treat her like an invalid. In her mind they think she is still breakable. Ry is the only person who treats her like a normal person who can do anything. They both have their demons to battle but if they battle them together that makes them stronger right?
This is the third book in the Morgan Ranch series and another solid installment. This book features Ry Morgan, twin brother to HW. Both of them have been doing the professional rodeo circuit since finishing high school, but now Ry is ready to head back to the Morgan Ranch and put down some roots. Avery Hayes, his crush from high school, had also pursued a rodeo career in barrel racing until she had an unfortunate accident and had to give up her dream. She returned home to Morgantown to work in her parents' hotel. Now they are renewing their friendship and possibly the start of something more.
The plot was well developed and the characters are real and believable. Kate Pearce writes a good story. Can't wait to read HW's book next.
Pearce's latest in her Morgan Ranch series is my favorite.
Ry Morgan is a twin, and the handling of the baggage this has brought to his life is deftly and realistically explained. Avery Hayes has her own baggage and insecurities, most of which stem from her barrel racing accident and subsequent limp. These characters are rich and interesting, and the supporting cast is also surprisingly layered. I definitely rooted for the couples' romance, and thought it was compellingly written.
4 solid stars.
