downgrading for now
I read this almost 5 years ago 😅. If I were to reread this, it would NOT be rated as high as I rated it in 2021 lol
I will say- Mia Knight’s writing gets me invested. But yeah. It’d be WAAAAAY too hard for me to fully forgive Gavin, even if he completely changed 🤷🏻♀️
I was way too forgiving in 2021 🤡
2021 Review
This book... I almost gave up on this book... finding out that Gavin cheated, even though it was three years ago and we don’t see it happen, was a punch in my stomach… and I didn’t like feeling. However, I’m glad I stuck it through. But, if cheating is a hard limit for you, a trigger, or something you just cannot forgive, no matter how much time has passed, no matter what the circumstances were, no matter anything, then this book isn’t for you.
The book starts off with showing us Lyla’s new life, aka Morgan. She created a new life for herself, took a new identity, met a new man💅, moved in with him, and moved on from her old life💁🏻♀️. We see her with this man and she goes to work; however, when she gets home, there’s a man waiting for her, a man that her ex-lover, Gavin, sent, and he’s forcing her to go back home in order to allow her father to live. So Lyla goes back, but she doesn’t go back without a fight.
The first interactions with Gavin are tough, and I wasn’t liking him. At this point, I was unsure if I wanted to move on or continue reading, because not only was he unfaithful to her in the past, but he was pretty aggressive in a not-sexy way. I should have known that I just needed to keep reading; he was acting this way after the turmoil he felt for the past three years of searching for Lyla. He has been obsessed, miserable, hollow, and actually celibate after she abandons him. He was relentless in searching for her, and she was really smart in completely changing her lifestyle in order to evade him. She assumed she was okay because he could obviously get any woman that he wanted, but he was never okay after she left him, and she obviously didn’t expect that he wanted her back.
Although it might seem like she was giving in because she had to go back, she DID NOT. She came back to save her father because he owed Gavin half a million, but she was no doormat. She was angry, stubborn, prideful, full of conviction of not letting Gavin take over her life and dictating how she needed to feel or what she needed to do. She wasn’t going to roll over and forgive him for what he did in the past, no matter how much time had passed. Not only was she questioning his faithfulness, but she was questioning him as a human. She saw him torture somebody and that was the straw that broke the camel’s back.
I need to give a shout-out to MANNY! That man! 🥰❤️Ugh. That man was a true father-figure for Lyla, even though Gavin was his son, he was THERE and PROTECTIVE of Lyla. He was a better father than her actual birth father was to her.
Back to Gavin. He worships the ground that she walks on. He’s determined to show her how much he has changed and how faithful he can be to her, no matter the time, no matter the arguments, no matter the struggles; he’s always going to love her and he’s going to prove this to her every. Single. Day. As time goes on, she starts to believe it. But the major problem in this relationship is his Crime Lord business, the business that isn’t on paper, THAT’S the bigger issue. Yes, the question of his fidelity comes up, a lot, and even when she throws women at him, he proves himself again and again when he deflects and dodges all the bullet she shoots at him. He shows her that she’s the only one for him and that’s NEVER GOING TO CHANGE 🥰. The chemistry, the connection, the smexy times were 🔥. They don’t happen often (because he needs to prove himself and she doesn’t give in easily), but when it does 🥵🔥👏🏻. He’s willing to give it all up for her- but things happen that cause him to go back on his word... and she’s not going to sit idly by anymore.
The CLIFFY!!!! Gahhhhh. I’m so glad I bought book 2!!!
⚠️safety squad⚠️ (based on my memory)
-no sharing
-no cheating in the current book (but the H cheated in the past and she remembers it)
-owd-although not really? The h keeps throwing women at H to force him to cheat so he’s forced to let her go (kind of as a way of saying “see, you can’t be faithful. Let me go). He ignores them or offers them jobs 😬. He knows what she’s doing and isn’t going to fail this test this time
-OM- the h is in a committed, serious relationship with the h when the book opens
-violence/torture/death
