Jefferson Winter returns in a gripping ebook story from bestselling author James Carol.
Jefferson Winter is at the beginning of his FBI career. He's young and unpredictable, but he has a gift - he can understand the mind of a murderer like no one else.
Winter is in Las Vegas with Yoko Tanaka, a tough agent with the unenviable task of showing him the ropes. The bodies of three young women have been found and each of them is missing a limb.
If the case is to be solved, Winter must be free to act - yet Tanaka's superiors are watching closely, and it soon becomes clear that this killer doesn't make mistakes.
The next full-length Jefferson Winter novel, The Quiet Man, will be published in May 2017.
James Carol was born in Scotland in 1969, where he spent his early years. He moved to England in the eighties and has lived there ever since. At various times he has worked as a guitarist, sound engineer, guitar tutor, journalist, and a horse riding instructor.
The character of Jefferson Winter came about because he wanted to write a series of books that gave him as much freedom as possible. He figured that the more interesting he kept things for himself, the more interesting it would be for the reader.
Although the novels are written as a series, James approaches each book as a stand-alone. Each story is set in a different location, and has a different cast of characters. The beauty of this approach is that the novels can be read out of order.
Broken Dolls, the first Jefferson Winter thriller, will be published in January 2014. This will be followed in the Spring by Presumed Guilty, the first in a series of eBooks set during Winter’s FBI days. Watch Me, the second Jefferson Winter thriller, is scheduled for publication in September 2014.
When he’s not writing, James spends his time training horses and riders. An accomplished guitarist, he relaxes by writing and recording music. He lives in Hertfordshire with his wife and two children.
Jefferson Winter is unusual, unusual because he has an innate ability to see into the mind of a murderer. Three young women have been murdered and each is found without a limb, Jefferson is now on the case to find this twisted killer. This is a short novella but it sure packs a punch, lots of tension and suspence, looking forward to seeing what Mr Carol will bring us with his next book in May 2017.
Enjoyable novella featuring Jefferson Winter. I do prefer the full length books which follow Jefferson after he has left the FBI but I have enjoyed a couple of the novellas that follow his early career and explaining where he came from. He is such an arse in this book but it's a good story with a little bit of Vegas magic!
The concept of this series is how do you bottle a special genius; Carol takes us back again with this short book to the fledgling career of profiler Jefferson Winter a trainee for the FBI. The problem with Winter is that no bottle can seemingly contain him; as readers we know in the series that Winter is an ex-FBI profiler, so this recap and a look at his early history is fascinating. The story here is set in Las Vagas. The FBI fly in to lend their support and insights, including Winter the trainee, following the discovery of a third body dumped in a skip. It looks like there is a serial killer at work, killing thankfully only every 60-90 days so althouugh the local cops have little to go on, they appear to have time to catch the killer if they pool their resources. While the police investigations follow the usual procedures Winter is prone to wander off and do his own thing. His handler is Yoko Tanaka whose career seems on the line unless she can reign him in and harness his skills and efforts without crossing the line Winter neither sees nor recognises. Another good story in the Winter back story showing why he is a unique talent in crime fiction.
I’m a huge fan of James Carol and the Jefferson Winter’s series so when I saw Open Your Eyes was available as an ARC I just had to grab myself a copy, even though it was a novella which if I’m honest I’m not a big fan of, as they often feel rushed or lack the depth both in the characters and the plot. Fortunately this wasn’t the case in fact for such a short book it packed a punch, which made for a taut read.
It was interesting to see how Jefferson Winter has evolved from an eager and unpredictable young FBI agent to the polished and guarded Detective we meet in the series. In Open Your Eyes Winter’s hasn’t yet grown into his personality he’s glib, abrasive and he’s definitely not a team player or predictable. Fellow agent and mentor Yoko has her work cut out trying to keep Winter’s in line throughout the investigation. I found their relationship a very interesting one as sometimes it felt like Jefferson was the teacher, where as Yoko helps him to hone his less endearing personality traits, dialogue between the pair is often full of humour which makes their relationship appear more authentic.
The plot is delivered in true James Carol style, three women murdered each of them missing a limb, it’s up to Yoko and Winter’s to find the killer before he strikes again. Considering this is a sort story it felt longer than 120 pages as it didn’t feel rushed, the reader learns enough about a younger Winter, and his relationship with Yoko to add a new dimension to his character I felt like I knew him a lot better after reading this novella. Open Your Eyes is a MUST read for fans of the Jefferson Winter series it’s fairly tense and moves along at a fair pace, but what I enjoyed the most was learning more about one of my favourite detectives in the crime genre. I shall certainly be looking forward to reading The Quiet Man a full length novel, unfortunately for lovers of Jefferson Winter me included it isn’t published until May 2017.
Jefferson Winter is a trainee in the FBI. He has a gift. He can understand the mind of a murderer. Along with Yoko Tanaka they are in Los Vegas investigating the murders where the victims are missing either an arm or a leg. Why are the limbs being removed and what has been the reason they were taken.
I quite enjoyed this novella. Quite fast paced with an interesting plot.
I would like to thank NetGalley, Faber & Faber and the author James Carol for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.
The problem with novellas featuring your favourite "crime buster" is simply that they are too bloody short.
Featuring a young, arrogant and rather naughty Jefferson Winter, Open Your Eyes has the usual gripping storyline and rather gruesome killer that James Carol writes so well.
This novella doesn't need to be read in order, thankfully or I would break out in hives, however I shall be downloading the other 2 novellas now as even a little Jefferson Winter is better than none.
If you like a good detective novel you will love this. Jefferson Winter is the son of a notorious serial killer. He also has a genius I Q. In this short story he has joined the FBI and been assigned to work a serial killer case in Las Vegas width Special Agent Tanaka while still only a trainee. If you have read the previous short stories you can see the progression of his relationship with Agent Tanaka, he is still that insufferable know its all, determined to not follow the rules and do things his way, with absolutely no people skills, Agent Tanaka spends most of her time worrying what he's up to than trying to catch the killer. Jefferson Winter is a great character in the full length novels and the short stories. None of the books need to be read in order unless continuity matters to you. Winter cannot be pigeonholed he's a detective who could easily become a killer.
I am a huge Jefferson Winter fan so I was thrilled to see Open Your Eyes was on Netgalley for request. James Carol has managed to create one of my favourite fictional characters EVER. In this novella, along with Yoko Tanaka (who is a great character), Winter flies to Las Vegas to help investigate 3 murders. What follows is an excellent little story, with plenty of detail and a fast paced plot that belies the size of the novella. I was hooked as soon as I started so I read it in one sitting and I am now eagerly anticipating the next full JW book in 2017! Highly recommended!
My only criticism of this book is that it was too short! However, it gave just enough of a taster for old and new Jefferson Winter fans. Cant wait for the new book in 2017.
Love them. My only complaint that they are not long enough but the time between books is too long. Can’t put them down for now I stop. He is a fabulous character that I would love to see become a tv series. An excellent profiler who plays outside of he box
I have loved James Carol's Jefferson winter series for a long time now. Ever since I downloaded 'Broken Dolls' onto my kindle on a whim and started reading it whilst on the Red Eye flight from New York back to Manchester I have been hooked. I didn't sleep a wink that flight because every time I stopped reading to go to sleep I found myself needing to know what happened and ended up finishing the book and downloading the next one as soon as I stepped off the plane.
Anyway, back in June I had read everything James Carol had ever published. I found myself scanning Goodreads frequently trying to find out when the next book was out. And you will too! If you haven't read anything by James Carol yet I highly recommend you do.
So 'Open Your Eyes' is the 3rd novella in the Jefferson Winter Chronicles which is a sort of spin-off series to the full length Jefferson Winter novels, focusing on Jefferson Winter when he is in the training academy for the FBI. I love reading Jefferson Winter as a cocky young man who thinks he knows everything, and most of the time he does, but I love reading about how he works and his partnership with Yoko is hilarious and serious all at the same time.
"The ability to immerse himself in the nightmare was his gift"
Although this is a novella, Open Your Eyes is a fantastic, page turner and great addition to the series and I read this in one sitting. Not only did I want to find out who the killer was but the way James Carol writes I just want to sit and read his words and characters all day. He makes me laugh whilst reading a story about a murderer that chops off people's limbs that you would think I was the psychopath!
I keep reading and turning the pages so fast that when I see 'The End' I am disappointed I have to wait 8 months for the next one!
The word 'UNPUTDOWNABLE' was made for James Carol and his books.
I love these short books giving some insight into how Jefferson Winter became themail profiler he is. Also fascinated by the evolving relationship between him and Yoko. Great story. Let's have more.
I love these Jefferson Winter novels but I was abit disappointed with the ending of this book the story had built up well then to end how it did left me wanting more of an explaination bit frustrating but I hope the next one is better
I have read and loved the other books in this series so my interest was well and truly piqued when I saw this novella that focuses on a young Winter as a fledgling FBI trainee. Together with Agent Yoko Tanaka, they have to solve a case in Vegas where three women have been killed and limbs removed. As usual, Winter relies on his instinct and goes off the grid several times to get to the truth. I am not the biggest fan of short stories as I usually find they lack something, however I do read novellas and shorts of series I follow as I tend to find them more satisfying. Probably due to the characters already being established and so more attention can be paid on the storyline. One things I will say is that if I had read this first, it may have put me off reading more Winter books. I didn't really get on with the version of Winter depicted here. He came across as a bit too brusque and cocky for my liking with little explanation for who/what he actually is. I would therefore not recommend this as a starter book to the series even though chronologically it would come early. It's a good book nevertheless especially as it contains Mr Carol's brilliant sense of humour. How he makes it right to be able to laugh at the thought of a serial killer chopping limbs off is beyond me, and, even though I didn't like this Winter, it has whetted my appetite for more full length books staring the Winter that I have grown to love. All in all, a good solid short read that will I guess have to keep me going until the next one which I believe isn't until Spring next year.
My thanks go to NetGalley and the Publisher for the chance to read an advance copy of this book.
Open your Eyes is the Third short story prequel to the Jefferson Winters Stories Broken Dolls, Watch Me and Prey. The other two prequal are Hush Little Baby and Presumed Guilty.
The best way that I can describe Jefferson Winters is the Sheldon Copper of crime solving, he is annoying, always right but you can not but love him.
This book is set when Jefferson is in the FBI academy and is pulled onto a case, so that Yoko and him can be monitored working on a case. This is due to the lines being crossed in a case they worked together in Presumed Guilty.
The case resolved around the murder of women in Vegas where the women have had a limbs removed. Jefferson doesn’t work the same as normal Cops and FBI which cause problems for Yoko as she is responsible from Jefferson. It interesting to see Yoko struggle with keeping Jefferson on a leash and letting him do his thing to find the killer.
I really enjoy these series of book as Jefferson methods make the books very entertaining to read. Jefferson is always one set ahead of what going on which keeps you guessing, which for me is the most important thing in crime fiction. I love to guess who has committed the crime as it make me feel smart, but I rather not know who it is till the very end for pure suspense that I get on the reveal. I always get that when I read this series and I can not wait till next year when The Quiet Man comes out.
I would like to thank Netgalley and Faber and Faber Ltd for an advance copy of Open Your Eyes, Mr Carol's latest novella about FBI profiler Jefferson Winter's early years.
It opens with Yoko Tanaka, Winter's immediate supervisor, and her boss, Hendry waiting for Winter on the FBI Gulfstream. They are waiting to fly to Las Vegas to help LVPD investigate a serial killer who is killing you do women and chopping off a limb. Theories abound, some more credible than others, but it is Winter who solves the case.
Open Your Eyes is a tightly plotted short read. Obviously as it is short there is not much room for character development or convoluted plotting but that doesn't stop Mr Carol being able to convey how unbearably smug Winter is, even as a trainee, and how stressful dealing with him is to Yoko. Please note that while Mr Carol refers to his male characters as Winter and Hendry he calls Tanaka Yoko.
The plot is clever and designed to show how smart Winter is. There are plenty of red herrings but only Winter seems able to see through them to arrive at the truth.
If you want a short, entertaining read the Open Your Eyes will fit the bill nicely so I have no hesitation in recommending it as a good read.
When I first requested this title I didn't realise it was a novella. Normally I do not read novella's as I get annoyed that they are so short and often don't go into enough depth for me to stay interested. However, as Jefferson Winter is one of my favourite characters ever I'm glad I did.
It's been a while since I read any Jefferson Winter books (hurry up 2017!), but this book takes you right to the beginning of his FBI career where he is openly smug, annoying in a cheeky, charming way and although he is an off-the-chart-genius he is still immature unlike where we see his character in the later books.
This was (just) enough to whet my appetite for the next, long-awaited book in the series which is due out in a few months time.
Thanks to Netgalley and Faber & Faber for allowing me to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review
Open Your Eyes is a quick and exciting novella about Jefferson Winters early days in the FBI. As a huge Jefferson Winter fan from when I first read the brilliant Broken Dolls book, I was so excited to receive this book from NetGalley.
Even back in Winter’s early days as an FBI trainee he seemed able to read the mind of a criminal. Jefferson is exciting and does not like to obey the rules and tends to go off on his own mission as he pleases and is certainly not a team player.
Although a short story, Open Your Eyes sure did pack a punch and I am looking forward to the next full length Jefferson Winter novel in 2017.
Many thanks to NetGalley, Faber & Faber and the author James Carol for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.
It's been a while since I've read one of James Carol's books & he certainly doesn't disappoint with this 3rd in the series of Jefferson Winter Chronicles. This is a novella, as are all the Chronicle series, & was a super fast read that hooks you in with an enticing plot that showcases Jefferson's talent in tracking down serial killers. With his lack of social skills, rampant egoism & ability to get into the mind of a serial killer (his Dad was one),you know you shouldn't like him but you can't help yourself. Maybe it's that cheeky grin of his, maybe it's his thumbing of his nose at the establishment, all I know is that you are guaranteed a great ride!
This short novella clearly demonstrates once again what a great writer James Carol is. Fast paced plot, fabulous Las Vegas setting, original, believable and masterfully drawn out characters, sharp dialogue, plenty of action, humour, suspense... 'Open Your Eyes' has all the ingredients of a great thriller. And all this is just on 120 pages! The best thing about it that it's actually fun to read, which is unusual for a book of this genre. I can't wait for the next Instalment! Many thanks to the publishers and Netgalley for the ARC.
I loved this novella. I have read all the books and novellas featuring Jefferson winter and cannot rate them highly enough. Very addictive as it is so hard to wait until another one is out.
This is my first Jefferson Winter story and it is an intriguing, quick puzzle to introduce the characters. The Las Vegas setting is fun and the solution to the mystery is original. I will read more by James Carol and I am grateful to NetGalley and Faber and Faber Ltd for the ARC of Open Your Eyes.
This is the first book that I have read by this author. I was very impressed. It is full of surprises, intrigue, mystery and suspense. I highly recommend this book to all who in joy FBI thrillers. I received this book in exchange for an honest review.
