This was a small book and is marked as the 13th book in the series but I would have numbered it a 12.5 because its not full sized.
You do get to meet others in the book, but its not necessary to read the other books for this. I think this is where the spin off for the Landis Brother series came from, so if you read or planned to read that series it might ruin something for you.
Our hero and heroine have known each other for a long time. They were married to other people and got to know and support each other due to their children. When one spouse died, the other family helped them with the change. Then the other persons spouse died, and again, the other family helped until everyone adjusted. Over the years if either family needed anything, the other was there for them.
Now the family was grown, out of the house, and the hero and heroine's jobs connected them this time due to the hero having protective detail for the heroine during a trip. Over the past few years the hero's started to have feelings for the heroine but knows she's not ready to move on or accept the relationship so he'll live like it is. He's scared if he moves on it, then he'll loose the long friendship as well and he doesn't want that.
Our heroine wants the hero and is very aware of him. However, knows he's too duty bound and would never try something, so its up to her to see if he's interested. However, before she can do anything about it, someone tries to kill her and the hero saves her.
Over the next few days, the hero is trying to figure out why she's such a target and who it is. Along the way the hero and heroine talk and are more alone then they have been ever. Will they find something special or are they spoil their relationship? Who is trying to kill them?
I liked how both are so proud, family is important while being strong. I think the description of the heroine, at times, put her almost like she's a model and only wears heals type of person by the descriptions but the character is more like jeans and sneakers which is a good clash.
The plot is good but the whole reason around why they are targeted was confusing and not a huge focal point at all.
Overall, pretty good but a few things could have been done a bit better, but that's me being picky for a small book.
