When a fierce windstorm blows away Little Hedgehog's nest, he puts on his winter clothes and sets off for Badger's warm house. On his way, Hedgehog meets his friends, all shivering in the wind and snow. One by one, Hedgehog gives away his cozy mittens, hat, and scarf. But will Little Hedgehog make it through the storm to safety without his warm clothes? A delightful story about sharing with others, with soft flocking wherever Little Hedgehog's mittens, hat and scarf appear.
M Christina Butler was born in Scarborough. She had an idyllic childhood in the country where she spent her weekends playing on a farm among the animals. Christina has worked as a nurse, a pre-school nursery supervisor, and a governor at her local primary school, as well as writing a number of children’s books. She now lives close to York.
Little Hedgehog, that adorable erinaceus hero whose adventures began in One Snowy Night, returns in this second touch-and-feel picture-book devoted to his doings. When a particularly strong wind destroys his nest one winter's day, he bundles up and sets off for Badger's house, where he hopes to find shelter. Meeting a variety of very cold creatures on his way - a family of mice whose home has also been destroyed by the high winds, an otter with freezing hands, a shivering fawn - he sacrifices all of his warm wrappings to help them out. After a cozy night at Badger's, he returns to the site of his former nest to discover... a wonderful surprise!
With a heartwarming story in which a series of good deeds are rewarded in kind, cute-as-a-button illustrations, and a velvety hat, scarf and mittens, all of which can be touched and felt by the young child, One Winter's Day offers an entertaining and interactive reading experience. Although I didn't enjoy it quite as much as its predecessor, it was still solidly engaging, and more than enough to convince me to continue on the the next Little Hedgehog adventure, One Rainy Day. After all, these books feature a cuddly hedgehog, so how bad could they be?
One Winter’s Day (ages 3-8) by M. Christina Butler and illustrated by Tina Macnaughton is an adorable and enchanting story about the warming power of friendship. When you read this book, the children can touch and feel Little Hedgehog’s hat, scarf, and mittens. Little Hedgehog travels through a blizzard helping all of his animal friends along the way. Suddenly, Little Hedgehog is in need of rescuing. Will his friends come to his aid? I loved the delightful illustrations and the sweet story of friendship! This would work well for a friendship unit as well.
One Winter’s day is a touch and feel book, so though out the story children are encouraged to engage with the narrative and characters via a tactile understanding, as well as the script and illustrations. The story is about Hedgehog, who has had his house blown away by a terrible storm. On route to stay with his friend Badger he meets other friends who have also been affected by the storm and are cold and in need of help. Hedgehog kindly and willingly offers his scarf, hat and gloves to the friends who he meets on his journey. Once he has arrived at Badgers house, Hedgehog has some tea and is warmed up by the fire. After the storm has passed Hedgehog returns home reluctantly to re-build his house destroyed by the storm, only to find that the friends he helped on his journey have already built him a cosy, warm new home to live in. From the beginning of the story empathy is felt for Hedgehog as he looses him home that he was getting ready to sleep in. His selfless act the help those in need through out the story increases this empathy so as when he finally arrives at Badgers house the reader is delighted that Hedgehog is now warm and cosy. The act of his friends rebuilding his home is teaching the understanding that if you do well to people, they will be kind back to you. Young children will especially like this book as they generally understand the concept that helping people is good and something that they would be praised for, so it is lovely to see Hedgehog finally be rewarded for his good deeds. Joshua aged 3 “Good, he gave the things he had to the animals.” Amabelle aged 3 “Good, they made a new nest for him.”
My name is YoSafBridg and i'm a picture book addict. This problem seems to hit especially hard in winter, when all these cute little cuddly animals appear wanting to cozy up, calling out to me, with their seductive siren songs. I ask you, what's a weak little librarian, like me to do? There i was today, innocently walking past the picture book display when this adorable little hedgehog (an animal i have always wanted to adopt by the by, unfortunately the cats will not allow me to do so) unavoidably beckons to me from the cover of One Winter's Day (a touch and feel book) by M. Christina Butler and illustrated by Tina Macnaughton. This is an incredibly cute book as the little hedgehog makes his way through the woods once the wind blows his nest away, playing good Samaritan to every poor little creature he meets. Of course there is a moral (well not really a moral~but it does show that being kind and sweet and selfless and all that will reward you with good karma~maybe saying that life is fair even when we all know that it really isn't) at the end and again i question the wisdom of over-adorableness of wild animals in tales for children but this one just wins over that "awe" factor in me (and tells that cynic to go sulk in the corner for a while). What can i say?
Little Hedgehog is building his nest for the winter when a ferocious wind blows it right away. He decides his best option is to go stay with Badger. On his way to Badger's house, Little Hedgehog meets several friends in need and he helps them. Eventually he finds shelter from the storm and a big surprise awaiting him the next day in return for his kindness. A sweet story, great as a group or individual read aloud. Amazing illustrations that include a fuzzy hat, mittens, and scarf kids can touch and feel.
This book is most appropriate for k-2nd grade. The story follows Hedgehog traveling to Badger's house because a storm destroyed his. On his way to Badger's, he gives his hat to a family of mice, his gloves to an otter, and his scarf to a fawn, so by the time he gets to Badger's he is just about frozen. When the storm finally calms down, Badger promises to help him rebuild his house, but when they get back to its original location they find that the mice, deer, and otter have already built him the coziest new home. I thought this book was very cute and enjoyable, especially for children. This could help engage the attention of tactile learners because each time the hat, gloves, or scarf are in the picture, they are represented with felt fabric. I also like the moral that kindness will come back to you because even though the hedgehog is cold after giving out his clothes, the animals who he helped built his house for him. This book could be used to fulfill CCSS RL 1.3, so I could have a discussion about the animals he encounters, where he encounters them, and what he gives them. Students could also write a sentence and illustrate its content.
Aww, what a lovable little hedgehog. He provides a wonderful lesson in caring for others.

This is a delightful book that has unusual characters for the young children to be introduced to or reintroduced to. Animals that normally aren't in children books (or very little are they in them) like hedgehogs, badgers, etc. A winter storm comes upon them quickly and blows hedgehogs home away he sets off to find his friend badger to stay with him during the storm. And along the way Hedgehog finds friends that are cold and shivering so he give them his hat, mittens and scarf leaving him without anything to warm him. Badger does take him in and they weather the storm to venture out after the storm to find him a new home. He's sad and doesn't know what he'll do since the storm blew away everything he needs to build a new home. But he's very pleasantly surprised by his new friends...
2. One Winter’s Day written by M. Christina Butler and illustrated by Tina Macnaughton No Awards Grade Level: PreK + One Winter’s Day is a story about a little Hedgehog who loses his home in a winter storm. On his way to his friend the Badger’s house, he runs into lots of other animals and helps them by giving away his winter outfit to them. One Winter’s Day is a cute winter story about sharing what you have, even when it’s not a lot. The book had ‘touch and feel’ pages to make it more interactive for the children reading it. This book could be used in a classroom to talk about sharing and friendship. Even when Hedgehog was in trouble he still was nice to his friends and cared for them.
A great story about karma and selfless giving. Mr. Hedgehog is going to stay at a friends during a snow storm and as he makes his way he enounters forest animals out in the cold. At each point he gives away a piece of his winter clothing, until he has nothing left.
In the end, the animals remember after the storm has passed and builds Mr. Hedgehog a new home, destroyed by the storm, out of sticks and his winter clothing.
My favorite was the bright color of his mittens, hat, and scarf in a different materials that the paper of the book, it's definitely something I haven't seen in a book before.
Synopsis:"A delightful story about sharing with others, with soft flocking wherever Little Hedgehog's mittens, hat, and scarf appear."
My Review: This is such a cute little story. I love the illustrations and Munchkin is at the point where he can find and feel the textures in the book. I love how the Hedgehog is so kind and generous even though he is suffering as well and how the animals find a way to repay him for his kindness. I nice little message about how kindness will be repaid in some way.
Title: One Winter’s Day Author: M. Christina Butler Illustrator: Tina Macnaughton Publisher: Good Books Date: October 2006 Genre: Fiction/Animals/Life lesson Strength/Aspect of Special Interest: This children’s book shows how one animal, or person, can make a difference. By showing compassion and love for others, one hedgehog was able to greatly affect the lives of other animals in his area.
Hedgehog's home is blown away in a terrible storm. As he makes his way to find shelter with Badger, he finds others also in need and unselfishly shares what he can with each of them. After the storm, he finds that the others repaid his kindness by building him a new home.
A very cute little book about giving self-sacrificially and how kindness often spurs on kindness. I loved the illustration style too.
This one made snow seem SCARY. But you know, that hedgehog is nice enough, but he needs to think about himself. He gives away all his winter stuff and then he's freezing cold AND homeless. I mean, it all worked out in the end, but still, that's not a good idea. Oh! And another thing. This one was the one that had the fuzzy pictures in it. Like when you touched the pictures of the hedgehog's hat and scarf and mittens and stuff? They were all fuzzy. So they get BONUS points for that!
This is one of those adorable children's books that help to teach a nice moral lesson. The hedgehog is a very altruistic sort, giving the other animals its winter garb so that they will stay warm, even if it comes at his expense. This was a good book to read to my classroom because it helped them to see that we shouldn't share merely because it will benefit us, but because it is a kind thing to do that demonstrates a love for our neighbor.
I read this book as part of a presentation during the Oklahoma Writing Project Summer Institute 2011. It was very cute and sweet with a great lesson on sharing. A morbid part of me thought it would be funny if Little Hedgehog froze after he gave away his hat, scarf, and gloves with the lesson being that you should be selfish. Ha.
On a windy winter's day, Little Hedgehog's nest is blown away. He bundles up and sets off to see if he can stay with Badger. But along the way, he sees some friends suffering in the cold and he can't help but help them.
A really beautiful story about a hedgehog out on a winters day. A beautiful tale about friendship, sharing, good character and winter. We really enjoyed this - and the touch and feel parts are an extra bonus which helped my daughter really connect with the story and the characters.
This adorable story follows Little Hedgehog as he travels during a snow storm after his nest has been destroyed, showing kindness and friendship to others along the way. When he returns to his nest to rebuild he finds the kindness returned by those who he has helped. Adorable vibrant colors are accompanied by velvety soft touch and feel hat, gloves, and scarf offer a warmth and coziness to the snowy scenes.
So sweet and cute. Hedgehog's house gets blown away and as he goes to take cover he runs into other cold woodland animals and gives them his hat, scarf, and gloves to keep them warm. Once the storm is over, he finds that they have returned the favor and built him a new home using all the things he gave them. I love the illustrations and the velvet feeling of the hat, scarf, and mittens throughout this Touch-and Feel book.
Contemporary realistic Lower elementary-4th grade I read this book to the lab k and they really enjoyed it! The characters within the book take a adventure through a windy, snowy storm that leads them into helping one another stay home! It’s a book that reflects kindness and good karma! I used predictions through out the book with the students and many times I used inferences to their own life so the book was relatable to them! I would defiantly keep this book on my class bookshelf as well because it’s an easy ready, and the pictures are great for students to look at and follow if they can’t quite read independently yet!
