A three day holiday from hell... Reese Reynolds just wants to get away, find a nice guy to hookup with, and relax before returning to his humdrum life of computer server maintenance. What he didn't want was to wake up on an island, far from home, in a survival situation.
An island inhabited by clones... Ji-Mael has lived on the island for 30 years. It's all he's ever known and he's never questioned why. When Reese shipwrecks, the entire status quo of the island is thrown in flux and Ji-Mael is the only one that can feel it.
A life turned upside down... When Reese and Ji-Mael grow closer, they begin to see life differently than they have ever known before. Will Reese escape the island and go back to civilization? Or will meeting Ji-Mael show him that life isn't all that it seems?
*This is a M/M dystopian romance filled with science and love in extraordinary circumstances*
The concept of the sole-survivor of a shipwreck washing up on a remote island of clones is intriguing. Add in a MM romance and I'm on board.
Unfortunately, while I enjoyed the overall plot and it's pacing, in the case of the actual story, I was left a little wanting.
I'll admit, right from the start I was at a disadvantage. I really hate 'present tense' POV because I can never seem to fully connect to the story. There was an awful lot of "I exhale, I notice, I awake, I hear, I sit..." which drives me bonkers. But if that doesn't bother you then you're already ahead.
But honestly, the crux of my issues with this book is that I feel like I only got the GIST of the story when I really wanted to KNOW the story.
There were time jumps and then an awful lot of 'telling', which is a massive pet peeve of mine. I want to be there when things happen. I want to feel things as the characters do, experience them. But I just didn't. I think this was more to protect some of the 'reveals' of the plot later in the book, but it kept me from fully engaging with the world.
When Reese finds, himself shipwrecked on seemingly deserted island he wishes for his hum drum life back. Reese soon discovers the island is inhabited by odd inhabitants that are almost childlike though they are obviously adults. One Ji-Mael, helps Reese and introduces him to the mysterious Dartan who checks on the inhabitants and brings them supplies monthly. Dartan is not happy that Reese landed on his island and has no intentions of helping him back to civilization, especially after he reveals the nature of its inhabitants. Reese grows closer to Ji -Mael and reaches a point where he must decide on pursuing a return to his old life or forging a new one on the island with Ji-Mael. Very interesting read, probably the best of read from Beau Bishop, the story had good flow, was imaginative, entertaining and featured fascinating characters. **I voluntarily chose to review a copy of this book and I have not been compensated in any way**
this was new for me. I'm actually glad that i gave this book a try. i enjoyed it. i love reading things that have to do with DNA and science. this book had just the dose i needed.
The book is kind of creepy in a science fiction way. The main character, Reese, gets stranded on a not so deserted island that is inhabited by clones. Reese decides he wants to stay there in a relationship with one of the male clones and basically becomes their leader. Overall it was a decent novella but just a weird read for me to get into.
