"MERCY," Part One How can you teach a broken heart to trust again? How can you embrace each other with hands still clinging to your past? Why do you always need to pee after I tie you up? Anne and Alan have more than a few questions to answer as the world of SUNSTONE deepens with this new story arc.
Stjepan Šejić is a Croatian comic book writer and artist, known for his work on the series Witchblade, Aphrodite IX, Sunstone, and The Darkness among others.
After the massive success of Sunstone vol 1-5, Stjepan Šejić now delivers us Mercy! According to Šejić the Mercy series will tell the events that happened prior, during and after Sunstone. To quote him: "It is a longer story, a Lord of the Rings to Sunstone's The Hobbit."
In this volume we get Alan and Anne's story but it's in the form of two flashbacks.
Story line one focuses on Alan & Ally, how they met and became friends with very kinky benefits while trying to navigate the vast and complex world of all things BDSM related.
Story line two is all about Anne and her friendship with Cassie, discovering she's bisexual and her relationship with her first girlfriend.
Admittedly this first installment of Mercy wasn't very exciting (yet) but that's to be expected since it's setting up all the key players that we've met in Sunstone. Just like the previous books however, this is filled with nerdy humor that had me in stitches over the character's antics. And the art work? As stunning as ever!
For my lesfic readers: Where Sunstone was between 75-85% focused on F/F, this is more 50-50% F/F and yes just like the F/F scenes there are explicit M/F scenes as well.
I love this series! This volume goes into Anne & Laura's backstory and Alan and Ally's. It challenges biphobia. It has people (Alan and Ally) into BDSM and figuring all that stuff out (in a healthy consensual way), is often hilarious. It has protection, including talking about it in regards to f/f. It's real. It's kinky. It's hilarious. And I love every second of it!
While titled as volume 6 of the sunstone series, this is actually about two new people (for the most part.)
We met Alan and Anne through Ally and Lisa story in the first 5 volumes of Sunstone. While they were great supporting cast, in this series we get to learn about their past. I'm guessing we named in sunstone volume 6 for more business standpoint since Sunstone sold really well. Saying that this volume of Mercy goes to the past, where we learn all about Anne and Alan young college days.
Alan being into BDSM and trying to live his life while all his classmates know his dark secret thanks to bullies. That's when Alan meets ally and begins his journey into the world of BDSM with his best friend. On the flipside you have Anne talking about her first bi-sexual feelings and rock/metal music. Both are stories of love, both have bumpy moments, but mostly happy. However, we know full well that won't last.
Sunstone Mercy does a great job of continuing the series without feeling like a cash grab. You have characters that are growing by sharing their past. They are about to be parents and they want to write a story and in a charming way we get to really learn about what makes them click. The story is filled with amazing art, great sex scenes, plenty of funny moments, and charming/cute parts too. Sunstone remains the top tier comic for romantic comics with some kinky sex moments. It is a must read. A 4.5 out of 5.
I do love what Stjepan Sejic is doing with his "Sunstone" universe, how he expands and tells these amazing stories of human emotion, relationships and emerging sexuality, narrated in a funny, realistic, respectful voice. I loved "Sunstone" and "Mercy" is equally brilliant, with Sejic's amazing artwork doing it justice.
This series has completely blown my preconceptions of what erotica can be right out of the water. It's seriously so soft and pure, I love it. A few things I love in particular:
• The characters feel like real people. They're flawed and goofy and messy.. Sejic's characterization is definitely the strongest aspect of this series.
• The sex is frequent, but it's rarely perfect or idealized. Some of my favourite scenes involve the characters being silly while having sex (there's a scene with a glow-in-the-dark condom that actually made me laugh out loud) or being awkward and not really knowing what they're doing. It's great.
The only downsides for me:
• Sejic's art is beautiful, but rarely consistent. One page/spread will look super pretty, but then the next panel has messy linework or a crappy background.
• Most of his character designs (specifically faces) look really similar. Also, while I made a point of saying the sex isn't idealized, the bodies featured are. There are only skinny/lithe females with great tits to be found here. There is zero variety of body types included, which is a shame.
Overall though, this is a really fun series, and a great starting point for people who want to read erotica but don't really know where to start.
I would recommend reading volumes 1-5 before diving into this though. This is largely a prequel, but there are some scenes that will spoil things from previous volumes. If that doesn't bother you, this can be read on its own (but the story doesn't wrap up in this volume).

What’s it about? Basically this is a prequel to Sunstone where we get a more in depth look at Anne and Alan as well as their pasts.
Pros: The story is interesting and sweet. It’s a prequel as I said and it’s just as engaging as the main story. I normally don’t feel that way about prequels but this is lots of fun and Sejic is such a good storyteller. The artwork is absolutely amazing and beautiful! The characters are interesting. I was already slightly interested in Alan and Anne thanks to the previous volumes but in this I was like “damn now I REALLY care about them!” so that’s good. There’s also other characters of course including some new faces that seem pretty interesting. The relationships in this story are interesting. This book has a lot of humorous moments. I was especially surprised by the Alestorm reference, never thought I’d see them mentioned in one of my favorite comics or a romance book! This book is as always quite sexy! I know that’s not the main purpose but hey, a nice bonus for a romance book! So I mentioned Sejic being a great storyteller and yeah, the storytelling here is fantastic. It’s very interesting the way he tells it here.
Why not 5 stars? It’s pretty predictable. This is a problem that I generally have with prequels and this is sadly no exception.
Mixed thoughts: There were quite a few bad grammatical and spelling errors. I know everyone messes up with that sometimes (I occasionally look back and feel embarrassed by mistakes in some of my reviews in fact) and it’s not as frequent as it was in the previous volume but... yeah, it mildly bothered me.
Overall: Even the weakest volume of Sunstone is great! Sure I may have had a couple of minor issues but for the most part it is wonderful. A lovely story that is well written, humorous, sexy and has some of the best art in comics! Yep, definitely read this one!
I am so excited to finally read Alan's story!!! This is what I wanted the whole time because he is totally my favorite character out of all of them!!!!!
Almost like a new story arc and entry point as this follows Anne and Alan as they start their BDSM adventure and they each have other lovers, some of whom we've seen before, and some new ones. I really love the art style and the respect which is shown in these stories. They feel erotic but human and this one particularly shows the emotions and feelings of a new exploration of BDSM and the characters' roles in it. Really fun and saucy too of course, 4*s.
After the atrocity of Swing, so glad Mercy is finally out! The art remains gorgeous, the characters ridiculously gorgeous and loveable... Some lady lovin' with the beautiful mess Laura if you're worried about missing that shitck.
Always fascinated by side characters in a story and taking my time to imagine aspects of their lives that are unexplored.
So it was definitely an amazing ride to take a peak into the history and live of two characters in the series who were unexplored until this point except in their role as a connection to the main characters in the earlier sunstone volumes.
While this will not win any awards (except maybe for art), it was a fun read and I'm hopeful for the future volumes for good storylines. Here's hoping he'll stay away from preaching and focus more on good storytelling.
Alan and Anne, from the Sunstone stories, find the right people to experiment with at that point in their lives.
This is a prequel to Sunstone, and it's fun checking in with everyone. It's the story of Alan and Ally becoming friends, and then more than friends. It's also the story of Anne realizing she wants, and then later gets, a girlfriend. This is done through separate stories that interweave in clever spots, and it's light-hearted and wonderful and I wish this was how the real world was more often. I think this would be a tough spot to jump into the story (or at least you'd miss a lot of the interesting references), but it's totally worth your time to read the five volumes that came before this first!
Having read the entirety of Sunstone I figured this book would be akin to a DLC, not a completely new story, just a nice side distraction while we wait for new material. I am so indescribably happy to discover that this is not the case. Stjepan Sejic has established a wonderful new storyline about characters I wanted more of in the original story and now we get to watch Alan and Anne discover their kinks and work their way towards one another. Though this is only one volume, and there's no clear sight as to when the next book will be completed fans of Sunstone, such as yours. truly, are sure to find everything they love about this world.
If there's ever been a time to indulge in kink or find out a bit about BDSM through a stunningly gorgeous graphic novel now is the time.
Prequel! At this point you should know what to expect from this series. While this is the sixth installment in the series as a whole it is also the first in the new story arc, and it follows Alan and Anne at the beginnings of their stories before they meet. The art is phenomenal, as always. And I still like these people - it's kind of interesting seeing where they began. I will say if you've recently read earlier issues, or you have a good memory, a lot of this info has already been covered or implied. That said, there are plenty of cute moments, and sexy ones as well. My only real complaint is it's just a bit weird to be going so far back in time.
With the Ally and Lisa romance of the first five volumes resolved-ish, Sejic expands the world by weaving flashback material in with filling out the stories of the supporting cast. In places it felt more explicit than the series has been to date, but there's still a fundamental wholesomeness to the whole thing as the characters do their best to be decent while navigating niche minefields like a relationship which isn't going to go anywhere what with both participants leaning dominant, but can still serve as good practice and not muck up the underlying friendship if they both play fair. And of course Sejic continues to draw some of the most charming, expressive faces in the business.
I took a long break between reading Vol 5 and 6 because I wanted to wrap "Sunstone" up and not try to compare it to "Mercy", and I'm glad I did. "Mercy" still has the wonderfully flawed characters and great dialogue and relationships you want from the series, but with a focus on different characters than before. While Ally and Lisa are still here, the main characters are Anne and Alan. It's a lovely journey that's just getting started, and I know it'll be a good one.
4,5/5 - An awesome start to the reading year. I really loved knowing more about certain characters' backstories and I'm excited to learn more. I love how funny and lighthearted the comic is while still including some very realistic scenes in terms of people having doubts, being insecure, not really knowing what to do, etc. The art style got more detailed and polished in this one, which I also very much enjoyed. I can't wait for the next volume.
Ha!
I loved this one! It's less preachy and more show than tell. The pacing is amazing and so are the parallels between the two stories in this one. I love the variation in panel shapes and I love how the author uses them to build suspense, banter and emphasis. Conversations and expressions are so much better since the author has more pages to play with. Alan is funny and it's so cute to see him and Anne and everyone else in their cute relatable naive youth.
General Notes (proper review to come later... maybe):
* If you're familiar with Šejić (or, at the very least, familiar with Whedon-esque quippiness), you'll know exactly whether or not you'll like the latest volume of Sunstone. Everyone quips. Everyone. * The author's passion for panels and panels of endless text can and will wreck scenes, yes, did you expect this to change after six volumes? It works most of the time, however, since the story is most told in flashback. * Art's great, the facial humor really stands out. * Story's cute, though definitely setting up some bittersweet Future Drama. The WLW half of the story doesn't rely on stupid Gayngst cliches, which is refreshing. * I desperately need more of Laura and Anne in my life.
The Sunstone series as a whole offers themes of good communication and challenging yourself to be a better, more open person. The Mercy story glorifies all this good stuff too -- I am such a sucker for a story where two people who are technically exes, have a history together, can still be civil and be friends. How often do we get to see that in romance???
This is fantastic. It's VERY sexy, the art is gorgeous, the personalities are distinct and memorable. Really, really fantastic.
