Harper Fox is an M/M author with a mission. She’s produced six critically acclaimed novels in a year and is trying to dispel rumours that she has a clone/twin sister locked away in a study in her basement. In fact she simply continues working on what she loves best– creating worlds and stories for the huge cast of lovely gay men queuing up inside her head. She lives in rural Northumberland in northern England and does most of her writing at a pensioned-off kitchen table in her back garden, often with blanket and hot water bottle.

She lives with her SO Jane, who has somehow put up with her for a quarter of a century now, and three enigmatic cats, chief among whom is Lucy, who knows the secret of the universe but isn't letting on. When not writing, she either despairs or makes bread, specialities foccacia and her amazing seven-strand challah. If she has any other skills, she's yet to discover them.

Questionable

What happened???? I adore most of harper books, this one didn't worked for me!
Everything that I didn't liked in the first book was escalated to a 1000 here!

The story had a good pace, some intriguing bits, exciting scenes, and the explanation was entertaining, thrilling even, however...
I think the writer decided to fill the gaps in the previous story and it was a fail!
It's not the first time that Harper lost the plot in a series, it happened with Tyack & Frayne series.
Why some writers don't continue with the original idea?

On a positive note, I love the way Harper writes, it keeps you entertained. Steamy sex scenes, some a little extreme and super hot!!! Love the book cover, it looks like a movie although the cover doesn't mach the story unfortunately, it gives a different idea.

I had this book on audible, it was included, David Thorpe again was amazing, gorgeous voice, fully committed acting, superb performance, he delivered the action movie that I was expecting when I read, he definitely made the book better. Congratulations!

The ending suggests a third book might come, I hope not.
I have a lot of Harper's books that I loved so I'll pretend that book doesn't exist! 🤣

Listen. I love Harper Fox's writing, and I'm happy to buy anything she publishes the day it comes out.

But.

I thought the plot for the first Last Line book was a mess (see my review of it), and the plot in this one is a mess as well -- and without the benefit of the really gripping start to the first book. In fact, the largest plot points all seem to be a series of dei ex machinas (machinae? -- and yes, I mean for both of those to be plural -- multiple gods, and multiple machinations). The whole thing makes little to no sense at all aside from "gods did it".

Sigh.

I do love Harper Fox. But I hope her next book is back on the more intimate level that she handles so well.

Oh gods. I'd love to write a review of this book, but I sincerely don't know if I'm capable of doing so. Do I have the ability of describing all the various, mystical, complex aspects of the story — myths, symbols, elements, visions, prophecies? How can I make others to see the bright spectrum of emotions the author put me through? Can I even begin to convey the intensity of this book? Where do I find the words to best describe Harper Fox's soulful, vivid, unique voice?

Where would I even start? Saying that I quite unexpectedly adored the long prologue? That I loved the fast-paced rhythm, but also the serene, soothing, dreamy parts of the story? That I'm in awe of the way Fox writes strong, yet compassionate and flawed characters? Or that a thriller-like paranormal romance left me pondering over life and death, and believing that being a mere human is actually divine?

I don't have enough words. But I do have stars. I only wish there could be more than five.

Wow!!! I loved this the first time around but seriously I got sssssssooooooooo much more from listening to the audio. I was totally awesome. This ones a mystery/drama/paranormal/scifi/contemporary romance/action/thriller all rolled up into one and here in Last Line 2 everything comes full circle and gets wrapped up...mostly.

Definitely recommended and for me audio is my format of choice for this one...but whatever your choice play close attention to the details they matter.

2.5 Stars - Four years of waiting since reading Last Line and I was left with even more questions and hopelessly confused. It didn't help that I wasn't all that interested in Marina (John and Quin's mom) and Leo's (Mike's dad) story the book spent the first 20% solely focused on. So maybe I wasn't paying as much attention as I normally would have later on. I never got on the tracks to begin with let alone get back on them. It was mostly one big miss that went right over my head and made very little sense to me.

Combining the realism of a contemporary with the more fanciful elements of mythology can be tricky but I think it's handled well here. You just have to dive in, accept the premise and enjoy.

The writing is lovely as always. I really liked the backstory about Michael's father and John's mother and I appreciated the chance to see the guys in an ordinary domestic relationship without all the creepy darkness that plagued them last time.

All in all I was very happy to finally get the resolution to seeds planted in book 1.

ETA Jan 2018: The audiobook narration by David Thorpe is excellent. Recommended.

Oh my goodness, what a breathtaking saga this story is. A story so big in scope and magnitude it really is difficult to know where to begin with my review. An intricate plot with so many twists, turns and revelations it drives the reader on wanting to now what comes next. To be honest I listened it to it twice just to make sure I hadn’t missed anything, not that it is confusing, but just to savour the smaller details that may have been forgotten in the first listening. Second time round was just as enthralling and deepened my understanding of the smaller intricacies contained within in this storyline.

Mike and John are now settled down into domestic bliss after we left them at the end of book one. However, this is all about to fly out the window as their true natures are revealed and their true destinies lie with having to save the world. Quite literally. This is why the book begins before Mike and John are born and we are introduced to their back story and parents before we get to the present day. Harper builds up the mystery surrounding their births and paranormal qualities so masterfully I was intrigued form the very first chapter. Both our boys were born under a shroud of prophecy and the mystical after an encounter with the Ashkeloi Gypsies while Marina ( John’s mother) and Leo (Mike’s father) are on a mission with James Webb their boss from the previous book. James Webb provides an constant thread running through the various time frames and as is his name so is his character, spinning an intricate web of lies and deceit in order to achieve his aims. He isn’t a bad person, but someone who has to play a dangerous game, uses people to that intent, a manipulator and double agent of the highest order. the sort of person that you know he has a heart and some sincerity somewhere that shows through on very limited occasions but is mainly covered up by all the manipulating he has to do. I found James to be one very captivating character indeed. As a reader be careful you don’t get caught in James’s web.

After we get the back story we arrive in the present day, domestic bliss, they now have guardianship of Quin (John’s younger brother) and all intents and purposes and loving close knit family. However, trouble is brewing and things are about to be run out of control or at least beyond the control of John and Mike. I swear hearing this story a second time that Harper Fox must have had some kind or premonition with today’s political situation. Everything is plausible and yet we hope it isn’t. The world is heating up, nations are gearing up to go to war and Quin starts to discover he has certain paranormal qualities that he nor anyone else can explain. I just LOVED the way that all these individual threads, the gypsy prophecies of Mike’s and John’s birth start to come together as a whole to start a chain reaction of events that will lead all three having to save the world.

John’s and Mike’s love for each other and their relationship is going to be put to the final test. Together they are strong, the loving and caring they have for each other oozes off the page. The sex is hot, if not a little kinky, as Mike finds that some of the things he did with Anjel in the first book is also a little bit of his own tastes, but that’s fun too. Can they both survive what is required of them? There is no denying in order to find peace they are going to have to face down their arch enemies or opposite numbers. This leads to one part in the book where they have t go their separate ways the question remaining is whether they will ever be able to find each other again. They risk their own happiness for the greater good of putting a world to rights that has now spun out of control. An action packed race ensues that left me breathless and not wanting to miss a minute. Hence the second listening. Normally I would say that for Harper’s writing style is not one that would necessarily lend itself to action packed scenes, more for the emotional level, but she masters this well and are treated to lots of James Bond style action as our boys set off on their final mission.

I could wax lyrical about this book but my review has to end somewhere. It’s a difficult thing to write a review for something so momentous as reading this story from Harper. The book is excellently plotted, it’s suitably labyrinthine for such a thriller style story but never loses the reader, rather keeps the intrigue going until the final scene has played out. The tangled web that is woven by James Webb as he uses and plays people like puppets for his own means. The mystical is superbly woven into the reality lending the story and extra facet to this spy / thriller story. I can highly recommend this book for all those fans of Day of the Jackal style thrillers with extra M/M spice and magic thrown in. Loved these two books from start finish and if you haven’t managed to get around to them yet then it’s high time you do.

NARRATION

Harper writes very vibrant, deliciously complicated and multi-layered characters and this obviously needs a very careful narration. I can’t sing the praises of David Thorpe enough. He does an excellent job and not once does his vice characterisations falter in what is a marathon of a book. Each character has its own distinct voice and David brings them to life as they spoke to me through my speakers. He lends exactly what is needed to the voices of each character, their distinct accents, suitably dark and sinister when needed, emotional when needed, a real joy to listen to. He was a new narrator to me in the first book but has now earned his place in my all time favourite list of narrators.

I hadn't expected the turn into a paranormal world but it kept the story interesting and made me want to continue reading.

I really enjoyed both books and I wouldn't mind reading a third one with these characters. I feel like Harper Fox left the possibility of a new book open by the end of this book, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I clearly remember when I finished the first book, four years ago, how I hoped there'd be a sequel because there was so much potential with the characters and what she'd done with them. I'm so glad it finally appeared. And I really, really hope the next one doesn't take as long. The ending for this, while not a heart-stopping cliffhanger, is definitely more cliffhangery than the first's.

The book starts with a long prologue—it's 20% of the whole book—that takes place in 1983 and focuses on Mike's and John's parents. I'm glad I knew about it going in, because I otherwise might have been irritated about it. But I actually ended up enjoying it. It was very interesting to get the backstory for Sir James Webb, Mike and John's boss from the first book, and to get a lot of the history/mythology that backed the first book and explained some of what we saw there. Quite a lot of what we saw, really.

I actually wish we'd gotten a bit more of the mythology sort of stuff throughout the book as a whole—it's drawn on and referred to several times, but I wouldn't have minded more details, more study of it.

This book picks up three years after the end of the first one (although with the way the two guys narrate about it, it sometimes sounds like it could have been ten years), and we ended up seeing a lot of their domestic life, which I really liked. Quin lives with them in Mike's rebuilt farmhouse, and they both have mundane jobs and normal lives. Well, mostly normal. But the world around them is going to hell (they're on the brink of WWW III), and that's what launches this story and draws them back into the world they willingly left.

The story was good, the villains familiar, and it was nice to see realized love between the two guys after how much effort they had to put into getting together in the first one. C'mon, book three!

One thing that bugs me (and I'm probably the only person ho cares about this) is that .

It's important to read Book 1 before this novel. These are not stand alone and this sequel will make no sense what-so-ever if you haven't read "Last Line". (Sorry, no linking available. GRs playing up again :/ ).
I loved Book 1, but I adored Book 2. This is action/adventure/thriller/scifi/mythical/m/m romance, and the writing is just superb.
I didn't find the plot in the least confusing as other reviewers have stated, I was totally carried along with the adventure and the beautiful writing - a real pleasure to read.
There's enough M/M sex for those that like that in this genre, some aggressively shocking (well I blushed anyway). I sincerely hope Ms Fox will consider a third novel in this series. There are a couple of open and unanswered questions still to address, least of all the forgotten character.
Brilliant! Loved it.

“Some say the world will end in fire. Some say in ice. From what I’ve tasted of desire, I hold with those who favor fire. But if it had to perish twice, I think I know enough of hate to say that for destruction, ice is also great and would suffice.” ~ Robert Frost (Fire and Ice)

'Last Line 2' by Harper Fox begins with the story of Marina Griffin and Leo South to set up the gypsy prophesy involving their children: Michael South, John Griffin, and Quin Griffin – before it moves on to the present. The stage is set for world annihilation; somehow John and Michael with their superpowers are destined to stop it What they'd rather do is stay at home, on the farm with Quin, and stick their heads in the sand; but when their old boss, James Webb, gives them information of which they weren't aware, which shows them a way to save everyone and get some revenge in the process, they have to act.

Although John and Michael should be enjoying their retirement, they find it difficult to do. The people know what they did before and are looking to them for help as world events through climate change have developed to a critical point. Quin believes in a peaceful resolution, disarmament as a show of good faith instead of aggression. He inadvertently begins a peaceful movement and soon has many followers. According to prophesy, Quin is the fifth child, the one who is to unite them all and bring peace. Quin is not sure how that is to be accomplished, but he trusts his conviction and believes he will be shown the way.

Michael and John return to their hotel room after their meeting with James Webb for their last time being together before embarking on what could very well be a suicide mission. With Michael's command of fire and John's of water, they must defeat Oriel who controls earth and Anzhel who controls air or the world will end. Both men have dreamed about these confrontations and know exactly where to go. Michael slips away from John and heads to the radiation infested tunnels where Oriel is waiting. He hopes by going without John, he will keep him safe, but John knows where Michael is going and why he's going alone. John heads to the place he's dreamed of and encounters Anzhel. Even thought Anzhel tries to disguise himself, John recognizes him. Instead of trying to engage him in mortal combat, John attempts to enlist his help with whatever means he needs to use. Eventually, Anzhel reveals the secret; in the wrong hands, it could mean the end of times.

In this powerful book, Harper uses theosophies and theologies taken from various secular, religious, and cult sources; mixing and matching them to create the needed impact. The use of the four corners, directions, north, south, east and west, and the elements of earth, fire, water, and air are the most recognizable. There are other ancient beliefs and ideologies thrown in which are familiar to me, but I won't even attempt to enumerate, much less explain them. Harper's outstanding characters; her 'way with words'; and the plethora of emotions her writing invokes, makes the experience of reading it well worth the effort. This book can't be read alone. It's important to read 'Last Line', the first book in the series, beforehand in order to understand what's going on. If you are looking for a light read, this is not it, but if you like an intricate, fast-paced story with excitement, adventure, intrigue, good versus evil, saving the world, and a happy ending, then this book may be for you. Thanks, Harper, for the dramatic conclusion to a whirlwind of a story.

(I forgot to post the actual review - only 1 year late but the book is still as great *blush* )

This novel is wonderful. It is the sequel to (of course) Last Line, but these novels are two parts of a much bigger story. This is such a very beautiful, complex novel; I don’t really want to say too much about the plotline (if I could!) as it needs to unwind in a certain order of exposition. Being Harper Fox – the writing is extraordinary and wraps you in a narrative that holds you in its thrall until the end.

Last Line 2 opens with a long prologue in a part of Russia we were introduced to in the first book, but this is set years before the first Last Line novel. While this prologue seems to be one thing, it becomes a marvellous part of the whole story, and is directly related to our heroes John, Michael and John’s younger brother, Quin.

I’m sorry – not my most coherent review, but this novel really astounded me with its message and metaphorical beauty. Much of the story is set in and around Glastonbury Tor, and with such a setting, the magic of pagan beliefs and ritual – concerning the cycles of life and the elements – is visceral and real.

Harper Fox includes a mean action scene and her sex scenes are sublime – However, the way they are written blends violence and sex into elemental beauty. This quote shows a little of what I mean:

Here in barely-breathing silence, control and surrender met and charged the air to a glittering unbearable pitch. Mike was naked…

Harper’s writing is a combination of metaphoric, gentle, abstract, passionate, intense – and utterly memorable. This last quote I think illustrates how one cleverly crafted simile can describe both emotion and location in less than half a sentence:

He counted off the thinning pines like the final seconds of a weary hour…

Like all very good writers Harper Fox knows the beauty of brevity when required, but can also tangle you in a passage of such intensity and emotion that you feel as though you have experienced the action personally.

I apologise for my incoherence – this novel affected me greatly, and goes on the shelf of my imaginary book club – where one day I will be able to discuss it to my heart’s content.

Ok first things first if you haven't read Harper Fox's book 'Last Line' stop right now, go back and read it and really why haven't you read it? It's Harper Fox and she's amazing. You really shouldn't neglect your reading experience like this and also to be honest I don't think this book will be nearly as good and you may even find yourself a bit confused without having read the first book.

Now that that's out of the way can I just say it's been 4 years between the release of book one and this book and I was honestly surprised and more than a little happy when I saw that there was a follow up book to 'Last Line'. I am a total fan of Ms Fox and I loved 'Last Line' but at the end I was left feeling like it needed more. So of course I'm over the moon that more has finally arrived.

Admittedly I was a little confused at the beginning of this book partially due to the fact that the story began with characters that weren't really in the first book and the fact that...well, it's been 4 years and a lot of other books between book one and now. However, I am nothing if not persistent and my persistence was rewarded as I continued reading and details of book one returned to my brain as well clarity was given to the importance of the characters at the beginning of this book. I loved the touch of the paranormal/supernormal that was added to this story.

Chances are if you didn't like the first book you may not want to continue, I can't really say because I loved book one and I loved this book. It was different and so not the story I would have envisioned it to be, but man I could not read this fast enough I was left constantly wanting to know more and why and how until I suddenly found myself at the end and while I knew the more, why and how I was left wanting still more. For me John and Michael still have a story to tell, I just hope that Ms Fox will be kind enough to share it with me.

:/

Considering that first book worked for me up to a point it was a thriller and lost me with introduction of supernatural elements, sequel that's entirely supernatural and filled with mystical stuff was a dud for me.

Everything I liked about first novel: the fact they are operatives in supersecret organization, mind control, a kid brother who is brilliant and set against authorities....it's not present in this novel.

Just two guys brought together by destiny to fulfill a prophecy their parents couldn't (and who were also brought together by destiny), angels who are actually elementals, siberian gipsies who are actually witches and a kid who is actually a necromancer messiah.

That's about it.

Not my cuppa.

On Nov 1, I wrote:
I'm 21% done with Ring Around The Sun: I've just finished the prologue. A fifth of the novel, and well worth its place in the story. Bet prologue I've ever read.

Very early this morning I finished this book. Have you watched Olympic gymnasts? How they want to stick their landings to end each routine? In the first book, Harper Fox set up one heck of a scenario. She absolutely sticks the landing here in book 2. I couldn't tell what was going to happen half the time, and the other half was better than expected, and if you're thinking about reading these, I am here to tell you to buckle in and jump. This ends Mike and John's big story, with an impressive landing at the end.

You need to read the first book or you'll be lost but they're both fantastic books, with characters so real they're sitting in the room with you. This book was a little more mystical than the first and I loved it. Harper Fox writes wonderful books with an adventure component that's better than most. There is romance but it's secondary. There is sex and it fits within the context of the story and serves to enhance, not overwhelm.

Wow! This was almost overwhelming! I was brought to tears at certain parts that I don't want to spoil for anyone
I'm not sure if I would say some of this is paranormal or mystical
One thing that is everlasting is the love that John and Mike have for each other
There were so many hold your breath moments
When Mike takes off for Oriel and when John goes after Anzhel
I hope it doesn't take four years for the next... Because there definitely has to be another one

READ (audio) 1-1-2019 [(★★½ story; ★★★★ narration) More inconsistent/illogical points. Definite switch into paranormal.]

Read/listened to this 2-bk series via AudibleRomance borrow.

Even tho I enjoyed this, gotta admit that storyline kinda went wonky w/ expanded paranormal elements. Another great narration by David Thorpe.

Blurb =
Is accurate mostly, but this has a more supernatural bend than is implied, and I feel it could have used some warnings.

My Genre Scale =
4 out of 5; It is not my favorite genre but I typically enjoy agent / spy / detective etc... Stories, plus this has some leanings towards sci-fi which is my favorite.

Odds if not your genre =
I feel due to its complexity and more supernatural bend than the 1st, that it could be a real "hit or miss" even if you loved the first.

What stood out =
Definitely some surprising twists and Quin's role

Mood Type / Appeal to =
Complex characters and plots / international intrigue with a mystical twist / solid established couples that can weather anything together.
Definitely not for the day one wants easy, light, fun reading.

Warnings =
Those highly sensitive to anything that might slightly smack of cheating, even if undercover and causes no discord with m/c's.

Series Notes =
2nd in series. I strongly feel the first should be read before this one for multiple reasons including an understanding of the characters.

Rating Notes =
Both books ended up with 4 stars on GdRds, but the 1st was vastly better to me at 4.4 stars. I just couldn't quite bring it up to 5. This one was a solid 3.5. The writing and character development were strong, even if the plot did not always personally resonate for me. It was definitely an above average read, so neither did I feel comfortable giving this one 3 Stars.

Factors:
Since 2009, I have exclusively read m/m. My 1st was in 2007. I am a Kindle diehard, and I never do audio. I read at least 100+ books a year - at an average length of 220± pages; but the total number of books is usually much, much, higher. My Goodreads lifetime rating (at the start of 2020) was a 3.72 average for 1390 books.

I am at a loss for words. This whole series has been a ride of emotions both good and terrifying! As always the writing and language as well as the turn of phrase are astounding. I LOVE the literary level of all of Fox's works! The storyline is magestic! It was building up from last book and comes to an absolute head here. Some character decisions and actions have genuinely surprised me and made me really worry for their safety: something not many authors manage to do these days. I honestly did not expect the ending. It wasn't a HEA but a bittersweet one (Really don't want to spoil this one so not going to say more). I honestly cannot praise this book enough. But ofcourse as always trigger warning as in the previous books as this discusses some really dark themes. But if you have no issue with that then DEFINITELY GIVE THIS A READ!! I would love to wax poetic about the details of the individual characters, the setting, the overall themes and ideas but I feel like I will be spoiling it absolutely for anyone reading this and this book NEEDS to be read on your own for the first time.

The narration on this audiobook is superb, and I loved the first book.

However...
This one fell short for me, because while I appreciate the mix of the supernatural elements with a pure thriller, there were way too many things that didn´t work for me.
For starters, there´s the whole extremely long first portion of background story about Marina and Leo. That was a story all its own that felt more like a spin-off (the kind I honestly wouldn´t have been interested in reading... like, at all) that was necessary to understand what the heck was happening, which felt like a failure to include all this background information in the main story in a way that made sense and felt natural to the narration. I don't know if this is really a good way to avoid some lengthy exposition chapters...

Other than that, in parts it felt like the author decided to take this story in a completely different direction than originally intended, but the first book was already released, so a lot of things were added in a way that, at least for me, felt more than a little bit forced.

WOW! This went from slightly paranormal to epically mythic in the space of one, albeit long, prologue... and I loved it.

This is such a complex book: characters paired with the elements, but also representations of mythical figures. Prophecies, visions and symbols. The end of the world looming, Mike and John in the mistd of it, but it is Quin who is the key to save it. Anzhel and Oriel are the forces they need to battle against, and it's painful, intense, twisted battle.

Harper Fox magnificent writing at her best: powerful, emotional, with a intrincated plot, breathtaking in the beauty of her words, this is difficult to explain and review... this a book to be experienced, and, IMHO, listening David Thorpe's narration is the best way of doing it. He gives it that dreamy quality necessary in more the slow, allegorical parts of the story, but perfectly transmit the urgency and the danger in the moments of thrilling action.

I truly, truly loved it.

I was a little worried with the divided reviews. Especially with the mentioning of an open ended ending. But I can say I liked this better than the first book.

Last Line 2 had good pacing and had an added supernatural element that I didn’t hate.

I had mentioned in my review for the first book that I prefer my books to have a HEA. That being said, I was enjoying the story (especially with it being narrated by David Thorpe). That right, I said WAS. Because I spent the last 2 hours of the Audible feeling betrayed and bawl my eyes out!

Then, just as I thought it was turning around and given the hope that I would get my happily ever after, BAM! My heart gets ripped out again and the tears start back up.

The ending was kinda open ended and felt like it ended mid scene. I was not able to find any word about a third installment. All in all, it was a nice duo to listen too.

This story was fascinating. The blending of contemporary and paranormal aspects was well done if a little confusing at times. I have to admit that I had forgotten the paranormal side of things from the first book and it took me a while to remember and make sense of some of the things that were happening here. Once I realized that everything made sense, thankfully, and the complexity of the story just wowed me. Lots of edge of your seat action and lots of twists and turns. Mike and John are a great couple and when they are in sync they are unstoppable. But when they forget that they are stronger as a team the results are almost apocalyptic.

David Thorpe did a good job with the narration and I would recommend the audio version if you like to listen to your books.

This series is very much not your typical Harper Fox. I'm sure there will be people who read it based on her name and are disappointed, but I really liked it; John and Mike's strong relationship is enough of a counterpoint to the gritty darkness of the plot that it never crossed the line into "too depressing for a Romance novel" and the ending is a HEA.

That said, there are definitely aspects that some folks will consider violate the unspoken agreement between author and reader when it comes to the capital-R Romance genre, notably
