Lukas the Trickster plays a dangerous game. With hordes of orks massing on Polix Tertius, he risks the ire of Wolf Lord Kjarl Grimblood, as well as the blades of his xenos foes…
READ IT BECAUSE Even among the Space Wolves, Lukas the Trickster is a unique and unusual individual. Here's a tale that shows just how different he is.
THE STORY Amongst the Space Wolves, the name of Lukas the Trickster is as much a curse as anything in the old tongues of Fenris. Named Jackalwolf by his masters, none of whom wish his dubious fealty, he now plays a dangerous game with the hordes of orks massing on Polix Tertius. Risking the ire of Wolf Lord Kjarl Grimblood, as well as the blades of his xenos foes, he turns his attentions to the planetary vox-communications network, and begins to broadcast...
Josh Reynolds’ work has previously appeared in such anthologies as Historical Lovecraft from Innsmouth Free Press and Horror for the Holidays from Miskatonic River Press, and his novel, Knight of the Blazing Sun, is currently available from Black Library. Josh Reynolds really worked his ass off this holiday it seems, as The Art of Provocation marks his 4th item in the Advent Calendar this year! Don’t let that number fool you though, as each story has been utterly fantastic in its own way, and this one is no different. Following Lukas the Trickster, a Space Wolf famous for his shenanigans and pissing off Wolf Lords, the audio drama is full of hilarious dialogue and really outside-the-box ideas. Topped off with an absolutely over-the-top ridiculous plot twist there at the end, and this made for one hell of an audio drama. Keep up the great work Mr. Reynolds!
A thoroughly entertaining short about Lukas the Trickster, his art of provocation, and how his way of battling the enemies of the Imperium differs from his wolf brothers, especially his superiors, despite, and even because, of how effective they are.
Does a lot with very little and is definitely one of the better Black Library Advent Calendar offerings.
I might have given it full marks if the height of Reynolds' and Lukas' humour was making 'your mum' jokes.
As entertainment, this was a straight 3.8 (I enjoyed it verily). Some jokes when they go on long enough start losing their charm. But some others like Lukas (written by Joshua Reynolds) or Norm MacDonald have an appreciation for making a joker funnier as it goes on. The sheer constant between Lukas and Grimblood was the thing which did it for me. You couldn’t hear Lukas smiling, but you could Grimblood scowling. The performances by the VAs brought out the potential of the story which otherwise would’ve been enjoyed just by Space Wolf fans.

"I can hear you smiling...!"
A fun short story, that really gives a good flavour of the character of Lucas the Trickster. Well-balanced audio design, and a good balance of narration and performed dialogue.
As with most Black Library "audio dramas", the narration makes it hard to actually class as a true audio drama -- or even as an audiobook -- but, it makes it no less entertaining. The Space Wolves are the 'fun' Astartes, after all!
The Jackalwolf returns. There are references to the novel Lukas the Trickster that I enjoyed. I appreciated some self-made fun that Lukas made for himself, and how he used it to ruin someone else's day. This story made me smile. Also some great music starts in the ambiance about 7 or 8 minutes in. Good stuff.
Never before has a Black Library audio induced so many laughs...While Wolf Lord Kjarl Grimblood rages at his insubordination and ork reinforcements close in on his position, Lukas laughs his way to an unusual victory.
