The mini-series finishes on a high note as patriarch Thomas Watson gets closer to finding out who shot his father at a family wedding, as well as realising his feelings for his father's nurse, Jane Boyle. As it turns out, Jane is in witness protection after narrowly surviving the serial killer who murdered her husband. Both enemies slowly but surely circle in.

Once again, Julie Miller is able to deliver two thriller plots that manage to seam together fairly well, whilst also incorporating the love story. The two plots eventually merge, upping the suspense. It was also interesting to read a romance where the hero was in his 50s and the heroine was in her late 30s, a bit of a nice change of pace from the late 20s, early 30s characters usually found in the genre.

I hadn't thought much of previous Julie Miller Intrigue books that I read, but the ones in this series have been quite above average! If you want a mini-series that can have an overriding plot-line, but with each individual book being able to stand on its own, you should probably try this one out!

Someone is out to get Thomas Watson and he's determined to figure out who it is. Unfortunately, everyone's hit a dead end until his father's caretaker, Jane, is targeted. Fighting his attraction to her is one thing, but letting someone hurt her? That's not an option and this cop finds himself putting badge and weapon on to protect what's his.

Being in WITSEC and keeping her past life a secret is tough, but falling for Thomas just makes things complicated. It doesn't help matters to discover he's just as attracted to her either. Getting targeted by a gunman, however, is enough to push her to do whatever it takes to protect the new life and love she's discovered.

So, there's a 20ish year age gap between the H/h, and maybe I'm getting old, but I personally appreciated the layered depth of Jane and Thomas's relationship! Their chemistry was sweet and flirty, but I especially enjoyed the mature and introspective feelings expressed by the characters.

When an author you love throws a flash giveaway and you're a lucky recipient, its icing on the cake to fall in love with the book you've won-it was that good! Jane and Thomas had great chemistry and it was fun to see the family together again. I got a kick out of the warmth and humor the Watson siblings brought with their antics and was intrigued by (hopefully) potentially new characters in the book. I didn't want the villain to be who it was and I admit I was completely fooled by potential suspects for most of the book.

Overall, this was my favorite of The Precinct: Bachelors in Blue series! Julie Miller weaves a great romance with a fast paced tale that's high on suspense and the adrenaline rush that ensues just adds to the fun!

4.5 stars. I loved reading Thomas' story and seeing him fall for Jane.

Julie Miller has a particular knack for writing mature characters who have learned from lufe experience. Their reactions, actions, and thought processes are different from most younger, 20-ish heroes and heroines that dominate the romance genre, and the maturity is seen in how they deal with the various situations. Also, both Thomas and Jane have lost a spouse, and there is no OTT drama or jealousy over it. Instead, those memories are shared and recognized as an important part of the other person's history, not a threat to the present relationship. It was refreshing to read characters who acted realistically and respectfully about the other's past.

The suspense plot that started in book 1 of The Bachelor's in Blue quartet is finally brought to an end in this fourth book. A second mystery surrounding Jane also occurs, and we learn why she has kept to herself so much except when caring for Seamus. Thomas gets his chance to to step out from behind the desk and take charge of protecting his family, and all 6 of the Watson KCPD veterans play some part in it.

Overall, this was a typical addition to the Precinct books, and that's why I loved it. I have enjoyed every one of them starting way back with the Taylor Clan. I loved the Hero, Thomas, and heroine, Jane, who both had strengths and weaknesses and owned up to both without OTT drama.

The plot is not very complicated or finely detailed, but this is the Harlequin Intrigue line. If you are a reader like me, the whole reason you read the Intrigue line is to get the romantic suspense without the gore and guts added for shock value. Sometimes I am in the mood for something more mind bending. Most of the time I want a good romance with a bit of suspense woven in, and that is where Miller excels as a writer.

Protection Detail

I was extremely lucky and privileged to win a copy of this book.

This book was a enthralling thriller to read. From discovering that Jane Boyle was in Witness Protection and that "Badge Man" had found her in Kansas City to the chase and conclusion was engrossing.

The further attacks on the Watson Family kept me firmly engrossed in this book and I suspected the wrong character! as the criminal.

A great read I couldn't put the book down and an amazing ending.

Would highly recommend this book to all Julie Miller Fans.

This story left me with a big smile on my face, what a wonderful ending to the series! This truly is 'character driven romantic suspense' because here the protagonist really are the ones to move the plot on, to shine with their integrity, knowledge, and experience.
I enjoyed the mature hero and heroine, they have depth, tone, and spirits that are easy to connect with, they are the kind of people you want to surround yourself with, people you want to cheer for.
Thomas Watson is a protector. He holds his family together, has been doing it ever since his wife died 20 years ago. He charmed me completely, I admit. I am enamored with his personality, his kindness, his caring, protective nature. And Thomas and Jane Boyle are adorable together. Jane is an alpha woman but there is enough strength in Thomas to take it and love it when she takes a command. They respect and admire each other, and not just physically, the connection they have goes much deeper, even though the passion and desire between them were tangible.
The suspense builds continuously through the tale, elevating the tension and dread with every twist in the story. The malice attacks are continues, and as part of the story is told by the culprits' point of view, their thoughts and actions take the creepy form...
A marvelous, entertaining, and suspenseful ending to the series that does not require you to read the first three books to love the events and characters of Protection Detail, but I do recommend the whole series!

**Disclaimer: I highly recommend reading this mini-series in order as there is an overall storyline throughout them.**

Thomas, a KCPD cop, is determined to protect his family, especially after almost losing his Dad, Seamus, from a bullet at Olivia, Thomas's daughter's, wedding. Seamus not only suffered a traumatic brain injury because of it, but also a stroke. To ensure his Dad is well taken care of while he recovers, Thomas has hired a live-in nurse, Jane, to assist in his care. Jane, though mysterious, is excellent at her job, and Thomas can't help but admit, at least to himself, that she intrigues him.

For Jane, secrecy has become a way of life after entering WITSEC due to a past tragedy. She's grown to care for the Watson family, especially Thomas, though she knows, because of the danger shadowing her, nothing can ever come of it. Her life was forever changed three years ago when a serial killer murdered her husband, a federal agent, believing he had killed her as well.

Thomas knows something is going on with Jane and offers help in any way she may need it. However, Jane refuses to risk Thomas and his family, and learning the man responsible for murdering her husband, Fred, has surfaced is definitely cause for concern.

But when another shooting occurs and it's unclear if the target was Thomas or Jane, a hastily spoken sentence leads Thomas to have more questions. Thomas may not have all the answers yet, but he would get them, and he'd do everything in his power to protect Jane.

"I'm a cop. Bad guys don't like me. But why would someone want to hurt you?" - Thomas

As the days go by, Thomas and Jane's relationship subtly shifts bit by bit. However, when Seamus and Jane are under attack, Jane instinctively heads toward safety...Thomas.

Thomas is completely surprised when his Dad and Jane show at the station, and seeing Jane in such a panic impacts him deeply. When she shares her secrets, knowing the loss she's experienced, the pain she's suffered, and the danger she still lives with...it solidifies not only his desire to protect her, but also the feelings he's grown to have for her.

Can Thomas keep Jane safe? Will they uncover the Badge Man's identity before it's too late? Will they ever learn who's behind the attacks on Thomas's family and why? Can they handle threats on two sides? Is the person determined to hurt the Watsons closer than anyone knows?
Will Thomas and Jane take a chance on love again, knowing how painful it is to lose it? Is there a HEA in their future?

One-click now and follow along as two people, both feeling the connection from the beginning, finally explore the ever increasing connection between them. I'm sad to say good-bye to the wonderful Watson family, but their send off was perfect for them and I hope we see them again in future books. Also, I really hope Conor, Jane's WITSEC handler, gets his own story. He could decide to join the KCPD, therefore, becoming part of The Precinct, and needing his own story. *cough cough hint hint* I'm already eagerly anticipating the next installment, regardless of the character.

In the last book we found out who did the shooting at Olivia’s wedding but in this book you finally find out who was behind that shooting.

This is the fourth installment in The Precinct: Bachelors in Blue and the happily ever after for Thomas Watson. This storyline was very interesting because not only does Thomas have his own but so does Jane. We finally figure out why she is getting so many texts and at times seems jumpy. These two characters will have to not only deal with danger but they will also find out that once they let their defenses down they have great chemistry.

Thomas and Jane are going to be working together as soon as she tells him the truth about her life. Thomas knows that there is something not right with Jane she is keeping a secret and it seems that maybe because of that secret someone is going to get hurt. The first time that their lives are in danger is when they are coming out of a diner and there is a shootout. Then when Jane and Thomas’ father are on their way home but someone is following them, someone is trying to ram them. Together with the help of family and friends they will find out who is The Unhappy Man and Badge Man. There is chemistry between both Thomas and Jane and their beating around the bush was sometimes frustrating. But in the end their passion over takes them and they can be together forever.

Protection Detail was a great read that I loved immensely. The characters were well developed. I loved seeing the Watson family come together to protect their own and from the beginning they included Jane which was awesome. As I started reading this book and more and more information was written of this Unhappy Man there was a point that I just knew who it was. It seemed that he was obsessed with Thomas’ widowed wife, Mary. Then in the end I just knew it there was a reason why I didn’t care for him and thought he was slimy.

I totally recommend this read along with the other books in this series which have to be read in order to get the full picture of what is going on.

Fantastic conclusion to this miniseries. As with the previous books, this one opens at Olivia's wedding, showing the events through Thomas's eyes. I like his obvious love for and pride in his family. He has been a widower for a long time, with his family being the most important thing in his life.

The book then jumps to the current time, and a scene involving family patriarch Seamus, Thomas, and the nurse Jane Boyle. Thomas is dealing with the frustration of the lack of progress in finding who is behind the shooting at the wedding. He also has to deal with his cantankerous father, who isn't always the most cooperative during his rehabilitation. In this scene, it is Jane who brings order out of the chaos created by Seamus's frustrated tantrum, while Thomas is distracted and intrigued by her. He senses that there is more to her than appears.

Jane keeps to herself out of necessity. Three years earlier she witnessed a murder by a serial killer and is the only one who can identify him. She is in WITSEC to protect her until he is caught and tried. She's attracted to Thomas but resists because nothing can come of it.

I loved the two of them together. Thomas's protectiveness extends to Jane as part of the family when they become the targets for another shooting. Their boss/employee relationship begins to change as Thomas allows himself to show Jane his interest in her. I loved his efforts to comfort her in the wake of the attacks, and how Jane slowly allows herself to feel again. Thomas isn't the only one with a protective streak, and Jane worries that her past has brought more danger to the Watsons. Both Thomas and Jane are older, and I loved seeing the differences in their relationship because of it. I especially loved Jane's perspective on Thomas: "After all, it was hard to resist a handsome man with enough mileage on him to make him interesting and sure of himself..." The respect and admiration they have for each other enhance the deeper feelings that have grown between them. I really enjoyed seeing them give in to their desire for each other.

The suspense of the story was outstanding. It isn't obvious to them whether the attacks are aimed at Thomas or Jane. The attacks continue to escalate. There are glimpses of the man behind the attacks on the Watsons and it becomes clear that he is much closer to them than they suspect. I thought I had a handle on who it was, but additional possibilities came to light and made me question first impressions. There is also the tension of knowing that Jane's attacker is on the loose and getting closer. I loved Thomas's take charge attitude and his determination to keep Jane safe. There are some great scenes as he deals with the various other law enforcement types and their plans for Jane. The intensity builds as they plan a sting. The final confrontation was intense as Jane and Thomas experienced a double pronged attack. The resolution was great as the "Unhappy Man" was revealed and dealt with in a most satisfying way.

The epilogue was great as it brought the series full circle. It was lovely seeing Thomas and Jane happy and looking forward to their future. The scene before the wedding with his three sons was fun and so indicative of who they all are. I hope to get updates on them all in future Precinct books.

I was a bit puzzled by the cover. Thomas is a city cop, so I don't get why he's wearing a cowboy hat and making out in the middle of a field.

Now that the Watsons know who was the paid killer, they're stuck. There hasn't been new leads. What they didn't count on was that The Unhappy Man was still lurking in the shadows, waiting for a chance to strike. And who would had thought Grampa's nurse, Jane Boyle, would be the ace up his sleeve?. Realizing Thomas Watson had an interest in her, it seemed just right the saying "An Eye for and eye..." If he took the woman he loved, Thomas should suffer the same.
Thomas had let Mary die. Watson had taken Mary from him and let her die. He wasn't allowed to be happy...

Jane, aka Battle-Ax Boyle, has a secret. She has lived out three years of her life in the Witness Protection Program. After finding her federal agent husband dead in her house, just when the killer was finishing carving a badge into his chest, and almost getting killed by him too she's inmediatly put in WITSEC and moved to Kansas. As the only witness who could recognize The Bagde Man she waits for the day hes captured and she can testify at court.
That woman was afraid of something. He could feel it in his bones.

Thomas has noticed some strange things about Jane, he can't stop his suspicions and curiosness. She's a mystery. When both of them almost get run over by a van and Jane blurts out something about not letting anyone get hurt because of her, he stars to think maybe he wasn't the target this time.
He'd been a son, a dad, a widower for a lot of years. Jane made him feel like a man.

This book in the series shows a really mature couple, maybe because of their age (though they're not old at all) or experiences, Thomas and Jane don't beat around the bush, they know what they want in life and that is to be together. They can't resist the chemistry but Jane's situation and Thomas's attempts on his life don't paint a foreseeable future for them, yet. Meanwhile, they team up to catch the serial killer. Being a family of cops, the Watsons and friends plan a trap for Badge Men and maybe the one who wants to kill Thomas.

AND I knew it! I saw you! Unhappy Man. Though at a point I had three suspects I discarted one by one. I was almost sure he was the one but I have been fooled in the past so I was patient with my suspicions.

Long awaited answers are here with the latest from Julie Miller! We've been enjoying the intrigue surrounding the Watson family for several books now in The Precinct: Bachelors in Blue series and finally we get to the bottom of who has been targeting their family ... but not without another huge mystery coming along for the ride! Great book! I have enjoyed each and every one of the books showcasing the Watson kids finding their happily ever afters, and now we get the rare treat of the parent being the hero finding love! I just loved that!

Detective Lieutenant Thomas Watson was shocked to learn his family was being targeted when gunfire broke out at his daughter's wedding a few months ago. Still fighting to get back to normal after the fall-out, the family is supporting his Dad in every way possible after his injury, including hiring private nurse Jane Boyle to be in charge of his care.

Unbeknownst to them, Jane is in witness protection, and the danger from her past just might be coming to visit her again ... with the help of the Watson family enemy! Will they be able to rally this family of cops together to keep her safe ... and will he give in to the temptation to act on the feelings she's stirring up in him?

Having read all the Watson family stories, I was happy to see the family patriarch, Thomas, get his own story. Thomas had been a widower for many years. Jane was also widowed but more recently. Jane does everything she can to avoid relationships of any kind. As a witness to her husband's murder and the only person able to provide identifying details about the serial killer, she is under federal protection. Her life isn't her own, and neither is her name. Thomas knows none of this, but he does know how private she is. When they come under attack, each tries to take the blame, Thomas because of the ongoing danger that has stalked his family, and Jane due to the killer tracking her. Once Thomas and his family discover the truth, nothing will stop them from rallying around Jane. She is one of them, and they protect their own. In the meantime, Jane and Thomas surrender to the chemistry between them. Their love story is sweet as is the family support they receive. As for the suspense, there are several possible suspects, any of whom would be believable. It made for an interesting mystery.

It wasn’t bad but I felt like I kept waiting for something to happen and not much ever did. Though I will admit I did feel a connection between these two but it took FOREVER for them to actually get together. I would have liked a better epilogue too but that’s just me, I like good well rounded epilogues.

I love Julie Miller's senior hunks and Detective Lieutenant Thomas Watson, Sr is a stalwart, sexy guy you just have to love, who happens to have a few gray hairs. He's as sexy as Capt  Michael Cutler  (Takedown) & Deputy Police  Commisioner George Madigan  (KCPD Protector). Strong-willed live-in nurse, Jane Boyle, is a fitting match for Thomas. This story also concludes the 5-book Watson series and we learn who the Unhappy Man is, whose been terrorizing the family.

Protection Detail is a May-December story, with almost 20 years separating Thomas & Jane. But Miller keeps the focus on the danger these 2 face when the serial killer stalking her teams up with the Unhappy Man to exact revenge on the couple. Jane has been working for Thomas, helping nurse his wounded father, and has appeared in the previous stories enough to give the strong suggestion that prickly Jane has caught the eye of the Watson family patriarch & wounded warrior.  We get to know Jane in this 5th story & understand her fears & worries that preoccupy her. I empathized with Jane & her willingness to protect the man she loves at the risk of her own life.

What will Thomas' adult daughter & 3 sons think of their dad in love with a woman only a few years older than the oldest son. Will Jane's mysterious past pose danger to Thomas? Will he lose the woman he loves to a psychopath?  What about the deranged man attacking him?

All is answered.

Now I'd like Connors story!

Let me begin this review by stating that when I open the cover of a Julie Miller book, I always know I’m in for a great read, and her latest book, Protection Detail, is no exception. This is the final book in her latest miniseries, The Precinct: Bachelors in Blue. This set of books revolves around the Watson family—3 brothers and their father who are all Kansas City police officers. At the beginning of this miniseries, Olivia the daughter, is getting married, but at the end of the ceremony, someone starts shooting at the gathering and Seamus, the patriarch of the Watson family, is injured. The running theme throughout the series is that someone is trying to wreak havoc physically and mentally on the Watson family. The culminating book of this miniseries centers around Thomas Watson, the father, and Jane Boyle, the nurse that has been hired to care for his father, Seamus. Jane is in the witness protection program because she is the only person who can identify the man who killed her husband as well as many other law enforcement officers. The danger in the Watson household escalates as more attempts are made on the family and, in this book, on Jane too. The question is: Are these attempts carried out by one person, or are there two separate bad guys—the one after the Watson family, and the serial killer who wants Jane dead?

This was an on-the-edge-of-my-seat read! There were several passages I reread just because once was not enough. I felt the need to savor them a little bit longer. Thomas Watson and Jane Boyle are a May/December couple. He is about 20 years older than she is. I enjoy reading about love affairs that involve a wide age gap. Love and lasting relationships just don’t happen in one’s 20’s and 30’s! Thomas Watson is by no means washed up as a romantic man. Stylistically, Ms. Miller employed a literary element that I especially liked. The prologue of each of these books showcased Olivia’s wedding from the point of view of each of the Watson men. Each prologue pulled the reader right back into the story without missing a beat.

Protection Detail is another excellent read by Julie Miller. Move this book to the top of your TBR pile queue!

3.5 actually.

How does it fit in with the series? Well, depends on which series. The miniseries, ok. We get the last chapter of book something or other (I think the daughter's book was the last of the previous miniseries but I'm not certain) rewritten from the star of the current book's POV in each of this miniseries. So you have somewhat of a starting point...I guess... And each story adds to the point of this book. So...this is the culmination of those books. The end of the story arch. The overall series? Honestly, after 31 books, I'd have to reread them all to say. I can tell you this much. This long running series has had more than its fair share of best frenemies with a grudge trying to kill people who trusted them. Also had quite a few serial something or others. Really, the brief interlude with the British mafia (there is such a thing?) was a welcome respite from the SOS that seems to be the theme.

Enough of that for now.

Our H, having noticed the h who has been working as his dad's nurse following the incident that is retold at the beginning of every book, also notices she's distracted and a bit worried. He resolves to find out why. And well, he's hard to resist.

Our h, the only survivor of a serial cop killer (she just happened to barge in on his desecrating her husband's body), is in witless protection. The serial killer has resurfaced and is on the move. Around the same time, the person who was behind her patient being her patient starts making moves to harass the H.

The local handler with witless protection wasn't totally witless - he wanted to move her immediately when trouble arose. Unfortunately, he was outranked by a couple of suits who wanted to...fight I guess...for the honor of catching the cop killer.

The two creeps intersect, and start working together...sortof.

They make their move the night of an AF reunion. They weren't too bright really. The serial killer grabbed and managed to relieve the H/h of the trackers, but the h got his tazer and they were able to overpower him. The stalker of sorts reveals himself, a fight ensues leading to his death, and a few minutes later, help arrives BECAUSE...genius might have removed the trackers but it apparently never occurred to him that a cell phone can be tracked.

As one might have guessed by the frenemy comment in the first paragraph, the person who'd paid a hitman to disrupt the H's daughter's wedding was the H's former partner who apparently was obsessed with the H's late wife and blamed him for her death...20 years prior. How many times has a serial killer or frenemy been right under their noses? I think every miniseries in there has featured that as the story arch. Well, except for the ones with the mob. You knew who the bad guys were; it was just a case of staying one step ahead while trying to figure out how to take them out. Why do I put up with this? Well, other than only one in 3-5 books actually having much to do with the story arch. Maybe? I dunno. Must ponder that...while I read what may or may not be book #32.

I have really been enjoying Harlequin Intrigue books lately and this one did not disappoint. This one could be a stand alone book because I really liked it and I did not know it was the last book in the series. This book was unique because both of the characters are a bit older. They have both lost a spouse and just have a little bit of that life experience that comes out in the details of the story. There is not a lot of over the top romance drama. The drama comes in the form of the mystery suspense woven into the plot.

If you are looking for a hot cop story, then you have found your book. Thomas, the main character, and his whole family are involved in law enforcement. Jane, our heroine, is a nurse who is in WITSEC and she is trying to protect herself and those around her. Clearly, she has experienced a tragedy or she would not be in WITSEC.

It’s a sweet, flirty romance. Thomas and Jane want each other, but they are mature enough not to jump into anything and they both carry some baggage. Thomas is afraid that he is too old for Jane, but she does not even consider the age difference. I just think a hot romance is what most readers are looking for (I definitely am!)

I like the setting. I don’t really know much about Kansas City, so I feel like the details in the setting made me a bit more familiar with areas that I have never been too. This book is a fast paced suspense story with a bit of romance.

When the Watson family was attacked, Thomas thought it was because of him. He knew he had made enemies as a cop. But Jane thought it was someone after her. She was in witness protection hiding from the serial killer who murdered her husband and had been chasing her. When she was the recent target, she was afraid he'd found her.

Being in WITSEC, Jane was worried when she and Thomas started falling for each other. She didn't want to bring danger to him or his family or to lose her new life.

I enjoyed the mature hero and heroine. They had a depth that was easy to relate to. Not only did they have great chemistry but really cared about each other.

I liked this thriller and especially enjoyed that there was a love story while the two plots came together. I must say, I didn't expect the villain to be who it was.

The final story in the Bachelors in Blue segment of the Precinct series. Thomas Watson, Senior has been an instructor for KCPD since a crash had severely damaged his leg. He has made a good family life with his children, father, and their housekeeper. When his dad is injured by a sniper attack, a private duty nurse is brought in to assist with his rehabilitation. She is efficient, knowledgeable and a little prickly, and she and Thomas butt heads regularly. He also notices that she is distressed by some of the messages she receives on her phone. There is a story to unravel and suddenly there are more enemies to defeat. Finding them among the red herrings thrown by Miller is fun, but you'll likely be wrong. This is a good series and the family is living happily ever after.

It’s been quite a few years since I dipped my toes in the M&B/Harlequin world, and I have to admit that this wasn’t as gaudy or completely unrealistic as I was expecting. The biggest surprise came when the ages of the main characters were divulged. Back in the day when this was my go to genre (as a teenager back in the 90s) the characters were 35 yo max. Now the gentleman was in his 50s! Times have changed, and for the better, too.

I enjoyed the murder mystery (had the killer pegged by about halfway), and I may have to select a few of these to sit in my OverDrive wishlist for when I want something quick, fun, and easy on the little grey cells.

I enjoyed this intriguing romance. This is another of Julie Miller's "the Precinct: Bachelors in Blue" series. I voluntarily chose to review this and I've given it a 4.5* rating. This is another action filled story but because of sexual and violence content, it's not for the under 18 readers. Someone won't let this family rest in peace or is there more than one after them. This ties up a lot of lose ends in this series. Again, thanks for the larger print copies available in this series. Enjoyed most of the characters in this.

I really enjoyed reading this book. In the middle of his daughter's wedding a gunman showed up and started shooting. While helping to protect the family Thomas's father was shot in the head. They were able to save him and now he is learning to walk and talk all over again.

This book will pull at your emotions and you won't be able to put the book down.

“Seasoned Savvy Sexy!”

Thomas Watson is an older, tall, muscled, damaged, sexy hero. Jane Boyle is a middle aged RN PT nurse caring for Thomas’s father. Their chemistry is combustible! Julie Miller has created a suspenseful thrilling romance between an older couple! Refreshing Read!

This is book 4 in the Bachelors in Blue series. It is about the father of the Watson clan, and we finally learn why someone has targeted this family. I will provide no spoilers, but I will say if you like more mystery/suspense, this series is a keeper.
