4.5 ANGSTY STARS *I LOVED this book, but feel like I should add a caveat that I’ll add at the bottom of this review. *
This is the story of Selena and Lawson, a couple who are struggling to keep the spark burning in their marriage. The book starts in the past with the couple getting together, then FF’s six years to the present where they’re struggling. At first, I was worried I would struggle with Selena… her running away on a multi-month road trip because her brother died (when they didn’t feel SUPER close) felt a little extreme, BUT no worries, because she’s totally normal throughout the book.
I loved the dual POV’s, especially so we knew Lawson’s thoughts while he was avoiding his wife. I had all the feels and really connected with the turmoil both were going through. The struggle was real, but you could feel the love they both had for each other. If that’s not bad enough another obstacle was thrown in their path in the form of wannabe OW, Aria.
Bottom Line- This is a great, emotional read, and any angst-lover should love it…BUT… I want to mention a couple things. First, it ends in a cliffy which shouldn’t be a big deal since the second book is already out. The bigger potential issue is that the next/final book Rewrite Our Ending takes a DRAMATIC departure from the feel of this book. It has OTT plot devices, and loses that “relatable” quality. *safety- marriage in trouble, but no cheating or OW shenanigans.
I feel like I missed something/spoilers may be below
This novella is intense. It's a married couple going through a 'rough patch' at the beginning of the book but I don't get why?' The husband is acting real suspicious and feels guilty but why? Then there is the wannabe OW and she is totally loony tunes but we see inside the heroes head and he never ever wanted her. He didn't cheat he was just clueless. But I loved how he tried to solve the problems between them. He was so loving and he tried to show her every way he could. I am glad we get both their perspectives ' but it might have been a little more mysterious by not getting his? I know I have to go buy novella 2 though for sure. This really could have been one book and I wish authors would just do this and charge for a book. I hate the whole serial type of stories and I need to have closure. I hate waiting for closure. Closure is important. And I have to go get it for $2.99! It better be worth it or I will be back!! 😘
Blurb: Soulmate. A noun that describes two people that are connected to each other in ways only our souls understand. You can feel it in your heart, the way the strings tighten whenever that person is around. The way you are happier, at your best when they are near. Whether this be a friend or a lover, there is a soulmate for everyone in this extraordinary world. I found the love of my life on Copperfield Lane. He is my best friend. He is my lover. He is my soulmate. The flames are burning within us but the hold we have on each other is going up in smoke. What happens after you get your happily ever after? Married couples at some point hit the proverbial wall. Am I enough? Is he enough? Do I look ok? Self doubt creeping in will taint anyone and that's what we see here in Copperfield Lane. It's the story of a couple fighting to keep their marriage. Two people who are very much in love and get the butterflies when they touch. It's coping with ever changing life.
Selena has been dealt a tragic blow. Reeling from the loss of her brother she flees her once safe happy town. She skips from town to town never staying long trying to run from memories instead of dealing with them head on. Lena is a runner and is scared of being in one spot. The day to day is what she fears the most. Her brother's best friend is her partner on the road. She feels something epic for him and hopes he returns the feelings.
Lawson has always loved Selena. He would follow her to the ends of the earth and basically he does. He dreams of one day settling down in the small town where he's from and raising a family. One day he makes the leap and tells Selena how he really feels and here we find ourselves in the present day. He runs a successful tattoo business and he's living the dream. Except it't not all sunshine and roses. He is fighting to keep his family.
This book isn't watching a marriage stay afloat - it's hope. Hope that if you and your partner are in this moment you can break on through. Yet this book has a layer of mystery and one very vile woman. Without giving too much away I hope everyone reads his book and its unique plot line. I like how JL Long blended a piece of the past into the future and made this story its own. My only issue with it was it was short but that's just how the story played out and I can't wait for the continuation of Lawson and Selena.
I hate manufactured conflicts. Lawson’s behaviour in this book was in complete opposition to his thoughts.
The book opened with Lawson and Lena both worrying about their struggling marriage. Lena had repeatedly tried to make things better; she kept asking Lawson to spend more time with her and with their daughter, but he always shut her down and made excuses. Lawson knew things were bad in his marriage and his solution was to avoid his wife because he didn’t want to see “the hurt in her eyes”. He tried not to wake her when he got up in the morning so that he didn’t have to talk to her. He lied to her and told her that he had to be at work early so that he didn’t have to spend time with her. He lied to her and told her that he would be home in time for dinner knowing full well that he didn’t intend to be there. He KNEW that he was to blame for their issues; he even said to himself, "My piss poor attitude won’t help a goddamn thing. If there’s any chance at fixing our marriage, I need to give her the same attention she gives me. It’s not even all about my wife at this point. I’m f#%king up at being a father. Not being here when she wakes up; not being here for dinner. It’s f#%king bull$hit and London deserves better.” Yet, he made no attempt to change his behaviour.
Things got a bit better when Lena and their daughter went on a short trip but it didn’t last long. Lena came home early to surprise him and went to Lawson’s tattoo shop where she found him alone with a beautiful young woman touching him in a way that was completely inappropriate and Lawson allowing it. When Lena was hurt and angry, Lawson got defensive and told her to “calm down”. He said he “didn’t notice” that the woman was touching him. He got angry and frustrated and didn’t think his wife should believe that he “would do something like that” despite what she had seen with her own eyes. Lena was terribly upset and left, crying.
After she left, Lawson started thinking to himself that he hated how much he had hurt her and that he hadn’t done anything to fix it and that he didn’t understand why. But then, he didn’t bother to come home for almost 12 hours! When he did, he didn’t say where he'd been. He didn't apologize or even speak to Lena. Then, in the next month, despite admitting to himself that he was at fault, he did absolutely nothing to make things better. No apology. No groveling. Nothing. Instead, he started working longer hours, avoided coming home and stopped having sex with his wife.
Nobody could possibly be this stupid. DNF

It's a good story, I enjoyed it. I had a couple of issues. Lawson could see the problems and the reader is in his head and he is thinking he should take certain action to resolve an issue or to prevent the gap between them getting bigger but he doesn't act. I found this annoying, he goes on about how much he loves her, sees an issue but ignores it. I liked it was dual POV. I as miffed it ended on a cliffhanger, I didn't see any warning of this, I got both part one and two when part two was released but I have a pet hate for buying half of something not knowing it's half. Also this is my first book by this author and it is marked Copperfield lane volume 1 but at the beginning I felt as though I had joined a story halfway through. I am not sure if readers have met the characters in a previous series but it took me a little while I catch up with what is going on. I did like that they are already married, you so get memories and flashbacks to before they got together but it is about making a marriage work.
Emotional and heartbreaking, yet hopeful throughout each page, you get an in depth look at what happens when difficulties arise in relationships. You watch the couple fight to get back to themselves, as the Author accurately depicts their desperation, rejection, and all the reasons they fell in love in the first place. You want them to make it, you root for them, and watch as they try their hardest, the Author weaves obstacles that you didn't see coming and left me with my heart stopped and jaw dropped. I happily lost a day escaping in this story and can't wait to read the next.
OMFG! I could not put this book down once I started it. I read it all in one day! This is the story of a love so strong it appears it can survive anything. These work so hard to keep their marriage together. Just when it looks like they are past the bumps, boom ! The love they have for each other is strong but can it survive what comes at them next? Lots of angst in this book, some sweet loving moments, and some steamy scenes. Just a FYI.this book ends in a cliffhanger, but it's one that will leave you checking Amazon for the moment you can pre order the next book. Bravo! There were moments where I actually was yelling out loud "wtf" and "oh no, no" There is a character in this book I would love to punch in the face! Did I mention the cover is so hot? ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️read for sure.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review!
Lawson and Selena have known each other most of their lives, but they never were a couple. He was her big brother’s best friend. She was someone to look after. Eventually, they talk to each other and realize they both want more to their relationship.
Because this kind of story isn’t new, it take a little more for me to be impressed by them. The story line seemed choppy and inconsistent at times. The characters were lacking any depth or dimension to make me really fall for them.
It was a quick read and I think others will find a true gem in it, but for me it was just an okay read.
**** I voluntarily read a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review ****
Ok, so this was good. And I thought I was just reading a marriage in trouble book, but no. There's a crazy lady thrown in the mix. Not going to lie. There were a couple of times my heart dropped because I thought the husband was about to pull some shit. And I don't shy away from cheating books at all, but this one bothered me. Why? Because it was a little too real. So my heart was beating fast, and I was ready to kick some ass. I mean I could see Aria was a crazy lady from afar. Please tell me men aren't this oblivious really? All the bright red flags were right there waving in his face 😆
There is nothing I love more than finding a new author, and that's what this author is to me, new. The only reason I even know about this author is because a very special friend of mine raved about this book. So for it to have caught her eye and heart like it did, then I knew it had to be amazing. I made the comment that I was interested in it and to my surprise, it showed up on my kindle. So I immediately jumped in. My thoughts are as followed.....
As I sit here in front this screen, thinking on how to put my feelins into words that will adequately express this book, is so hard. I am just, in awe.
I normally don't do novella, because I'm a greedy biotch and I want it all, all at once. But I am so glad I just jumped into this one and didn't let the length of it, deter me.
This book speaks so much damn truth, that my heart physically hurt. But it hurt so much, because that truth, is something I know oh so well. This situation, is not something anyone wants to be in or thinks they will ever be in, but so many people find themselves there and it's so hard to figure out how or why. It's so hard to find your way back, that most of the time, people just give up.
From what 'little' bit I got of Lawson, he jumped completely over being a book BOYFRIEND and went straight to book HUSBAND status. But like every husband, as much as you love him, there are times you still want to either nut kick him or throat punch him. I loved his heart and loved how much he loved his family. Even though he was a total douche most of the time, and was so back and forth with his wants and actions, I still loved him.
I feel like Selena is living my life, just in fiction form. Of course not every aspect is the same, but it was so crazy reading this because I just felt me. I weeped through out this whole book. My heart hurt through out this whole book. I loved her strength and determination and her need for her husband and to make things right.
A marriage, fake or not, is definitely not easy, but this one, took a crazy turn with one crazy redhead. I didn't see that crazy coming and was rather shocked.
Oh and by the way, I hate cliffhangers!!
This one definitely left me gasping and saying 'oh no'. I don't want to see what will be next. I don't want to go through more hurt. But I know I will, because I have to see that this is made right. I just hope that it will be. :'(
But it could very well be any married couple’s story who had spent years together for so long that being together became the norm. The magic had faded and you start doubting one another’s affection.
Don’t get me wrong. The love is there. Will always be there. But with the passing of time and the demands of life, at times we forget to nurture the relationship…stroke the fire to keep it burning. Open our eyes to see and our ears to listen that the other half of our heart is still beside us faithfully but sorely neglected.
I have to admit that it had been hard for me to read this book. Several times I had to put it down because the home truths kept hitting me spot on. I felt like I was Law, or maybe Lena, maybe a bit of both. Living life day in and day out trying to find that perfect way to nurture my heart.
Then I remember, all it takes is a simple kiss. A loving embrace…a start.
This story is about love. How it all started. Faded. And the painful steps to find that love again amidst all the obstacles life throws at it.
I don’t even mind the sudden turn the author took the story to. It’s just another curve. I just wish Law and Lena will still be strong to face it together.
Give this one a try. You might just learn a thing or two…just like I did.
I want to start with a disclaimer that it leaves you with a WTFFFFFFF cliff hanger! (Seriously, I wanted to throat punch JL so hard!) This book brings all the feels to the table. I am in love with the storyline of a marriage that is experiencing the inevitable "rough patch" that I think all couples go through at some point. It was truly real life relatable with the dual POV of the husband and the wife and what they were experiencing through the story. It will pull all of your heart strings and make you feel for both parties involved. You will want to jump into the pages and smack them both around and also wrap your arms around them and hold them tight and let them know it will all be okay. The tale takes you through the choices they both make as they both fight the battle internally and together on "what do we do to fix this?". Even though they are experiencing the difficulties marriage sometimes offers, the way JL writes from both characters POV leaves you with no question in your mind that they truly are still just as in love as when they got married, and like the beginning of the book says, soulmates. There are some crazy twists that you will not see coming that will leave your heart racing and make your eyes fly over the pages because you just have to know what happens next!! If you like a book with some strife, some angsty stituations, and surprise plot twists......you have to read this one. I cannot wait for the next book to come out. I will be all over it as soon as it's available.
For the love of... This book! I finished Copperfield Lane yesterday afternoon; it has taken me almost 24 hours to wrap my head around how I felt about it completely. The idea for this pull your heart out story is Lawson and Selena are the loves of each other's lives. Once the Honeymoon stage wears off, and things get real so does the emotions - fighting to keep what they have is a daily struggle. Especially when others want to interrupt that happiness, Lawson is in it for the long haul, but it is at Selena's expense? Let me start off by saying this is the first book I have read by JL Long - after reading this it will not be my last! Not often do I come across a storyline that in part is so close to reality you are fairly confident they are taking snippets of someone you knows life or your own. I loved it - I hated it. The plethora of emotions I went through in the span of a couple of hours is astonishing to me. I was angry with Lawson for being stupid, ( I typed that extremely hard ), sad that for them both, the edge of my seat biting my nails nervous, Get the heck over here and hug me happy. The worst of them all was shocked when I swiped the page to find it was the last and it left me hanging.*SIGH*. Mind you I have recovered, and I get it.... sort of.. haha, I am just whining because I am so invested in this life like suspenseful, sexy, heart-wrenching, well-written story after a couple of hours- I need to know what happens with this couple! I hope it's soon! I voluntarily read an advanced readers copy of this book
I first met Selena and Lawson in a short story in the With Love At Christmas Anthology, so I was delighted to get the full novel as an ARC from this author.
Selena didn't want to settle in her small home town after the death of her brother and took off to travel, never staying in the same place for very long, but occasionally returning to her favourite place, a secluded rock in Copperfield Lane where she would just sit and think.
This time, when she decides to leave yet again, Lawson, her brother's best friend. goes with her. Although they seem to be just travelling buddies, it's obvious they have deep feelings for each other and Lawson finally persuades Selena to return with him to Oak Town where he works in his tattoo shop and she next door in her beauty salon.
So, that should be it, right? Hearts and flowers with a happy ending, surely? But...not with these two. Lots of bumps along the way.
I loved reading their story, often talking out loud, telling Lawson to...'speak up, do something' and to Selena...'don't shut him out, stop acting like a spoilt brat.'
I was so rooting for these two and seeing their lives twist and turn to get to where they wanted to be, where they should be.
And then...bang! The end. Noooo! I wasn't ready to leave. I need more. A fantastic read by a new, to me, author but JL Long is now definitely on my one click list.
First of all...I'm so in love with this cover it's not even funny. Just had to say that. Now onto the book. If you read With Love At Christmas: An Anthology then you were introduced to Selena and Lawson and got the pleasure of learning about their history together (note: You do not have to read their story in the anthology to read Copperfield Lane...it's just a bonus if you do). He was her older brother's best friend and then her brother died. Suddenly she was no longer just his best friend's little sister. He recognized that he had feelings for her, but she lived like a gypsy...always on the go and never settling down. How do you fix that? How do you make someone who's afraid of settling down stop and be with you? You go with her. Now we come to Copperfield Lane and Selena and Lawson have settled down and have been married for six years. They have a daughter. Everything should be great. Right? I love how this book is so different from other romance books. In this book, you already have the love story. It's already happened and now you have the couple trying to keep it together. Trying to keep their marriage from falling apart and to me, that's so realistic. I think every couple can relate to this book somehow. It's real life. Their relationship has the real issues any actual couple has...is he happy, is she happy, is he still attracted to me, does she still love me, and so on and so forth. Then JL Long throws in a twist that some marriages experience because everyone knows when you are happy, sometimes things happen to try and destroy that because misery loves company. I absolutely will not spoil it...but I cannot wait for book two, so JL Long had better be writing!!!
*I was provided a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.*
This was my first book my JL Long but it will not be my last. This book is amazing and it brings what a lot of everyday couples are facing to light and makes you realize some things are worth fighting for. This book will take you on a real-life journey and the emotions that go along with it, you will feel the love but pain as well. Be prepared to fall in love and with Lawson and Selena and feel the true challenge a lot of real life couples go through. Do we keep living in this life as lover and strangers or do we become the couple we should be and let the love we really have for each other shine through? You must read it to find out but be prepared for some twist and turns that may be the breaking point of this relationship or just what it needs to make it stronger.
I can’t wait to read more of this story.
One Click this one and be prepared to fall in love and want to be on Copperfield Lane for the long haul.
You know those movies that cause you to bite all your fingernails? Those movies that have you sitting on the edge of your seat in anticipation of what’s next to come… Those heart pounding, pulse rising, can’t look away from movies? Copperfield Lane is the book equivalent of those types of movies!!
I couldn’t put it down! Read it in one sitting, started at my bedtime and finished waaayy after my bedtime. Copperfield Lane really is one of those page turners that you can just sink your teeth into. It’s the story of what happens after the Happy Ever After. It’s about the highs and lows of marriage, and living out your day to day life with your soulmate. The testing of whether or not you can truly live up to the in good times and bad.
Lawson & Leena’s characters are both very strong willed. I wouldn’t say either is weaker than the other. They both have their faults, but it’s their faults that make this story so relatable. Not everyone or everything is as perfect as it may seem.
Lawson, Lawson, Lawson… I LOVE him <3 He is Alpha all the way, but with a side of naivety to certain aspects of a women’s intuition. He’s honest with his emotions while being scared to give them a voice. Leena wears her emotions on her sleeve. She can see the downs and fights for the highs. And sweet Lonnie, she gives just the right touch of spirited young child that warms your heart and makes you laugh.
Copperfield Lane is an emotionally raw and honest story, one that I loved and highly recommend reading.
It does end in a cliffhanger, but it’s a good cliffy, that will have you stalking her page for the next book!!
Oh my God. I could not put this book down, I read it in the space of about 4 hours, I absolutely loved it. This book isn’t your average "romance novel" and it is really refreshing to see a book which isn't all hearts and flowers after a marriage. This book, to me, seems as though the author has tried to make it as real as possible, because let's face it.. not all marriages are how they are portrayed in fiction. I cannot wait for the next installment of this series, I was sat on the edge of my seat when the book got angsty. I really felt connected to this book, and I can tell this author, though she is a new to me author, is going to be one of my faves. I really wish I could give more than 5 stars, it truly is an amazing book, and I will be sat here waiting, impatiently I might add, for #2, I NEED to know what happens next!
A first time reader of this author. Did not know what to expect but fell in love with the writing on story itself.
Copperfield Lane is an amazing book that reaches into your soul and makes you realize that all good relationships have their bumps along the way but it's how you deal with things that matter. This book focuses on a husband and wife who are each other's soul mates but are struggling with the everyday mundane life and it's daily tasks. You learn from each point of view how much communication in a relationship is the most important thing to make it through anything and everything. This book will have you in tears but also make you happy and feel the love this couple has for each other.
Lawson and Lena are like most couples. Falling in love, marrying and having a family until the day comes when you slowly start drifting apart. Then a life threatening disaster hits! Someone wants a piece of you. The everyday struggles of couples trying to rekindle their marriage. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. So inlove with this book. It does have a cliff hanger but this book keep you so intrigued you can't wait for the next book. I would definitely recommend this book! Fabulous storyline. I'm volunteering an honest review for an advance reader's copy.
What a fantastic book. It is about a couple there has been married for six years. There love for each other are so strong. They have there ups and downs but they find there way through. Nothing can keep them apart but then one day ... The story are so well written and so exciting that I kept reading. I had to know what was happening next. It was tough, romantic and there was some steamy stuff in it. And the end what can I say I can't wait for the next book. please hurry I need to know
Copperfield Lane by JL Long was amazing and had me glued to my kindle. This book is a look at what happens after you find your happily ever after and what it takes to make a marriage work. And even though their chemistry is off the charts, they are both stubborn which causes a hugh riff in their relationship. Any time they fix one issue 3 more show up!! Can they find a way to be happy again, or will something else stand in their way?
JL Long you sneaky woman you!! I have read all of her works and this is by far so different. The concept was refreshing instead of seeing a couple come together we see a couple already together fighting to stay that way.
Selena has suffered a tragic loss and copes by skipping from town to town because her memories of her favorite place are tainted. She stays steady by traveling with her brothers best friend Lawson.
Lawson has always loved Selena. He would do anything to keep her even if that means jumping from town to town to keep this girl happy. He finally gets her to settle in that once tainted place with new memories.
We get to see a married couple hitting the rough patch i'm sure a lot of us experienced in our marriages. The self doubt and the being scared. Yet this story is much more than a marriage trying to repair itself it has a level of mystery and one very vile woman. I truly enjoyed this story and can't wait to read more which I hope is soon.
I absolutely loved the chemistry between Law and Lena! This is a realistic approach to what happens during forever. All the feels with this one. Their was so much love and chemistry and steam on these pages! I loved every minute of this book! Warning: Cliffhanger, but I will be anxiously awaiting what happens next!
