More like a 2.5. I had to go back and reread this. I really want to like this. It has a lot of interesting ideas but it's getting too convoluted for its own good. The huge break between volumes originally forced the reread but honestly it didn't help much. The art isn't helping much. Sometimes it's very nice, others it's difficult to tell who's who. When it's just Teito and the Bishops it's not so bad but when Ayanami and his whole crew in there, it gets confusing. I think more work needs to be done to differentiate who's who.

In this one, Teito passes a terrible test and he and Frau set off for what was once the Raggs kingdom because Teito has learned retracing his steps is helping to return his memories. I'm not even entirely sure what is going on in Ayanami's story arc other than he has the eye of Mikhail but needs the vessel to wield it (i.e. Teito) and he somehow got twin combat slaves on the muddled mission.

Frau and Teito pick up a new character of their own, a young slave boy Capella.Teito gets to his destination and wants to visit the Land of Seele but it seems he must 'die' in order to do so. We more or less leave off with that.

I'll give this another chance but it's already into double digits manga-wise and that's a big money investment. If the storyline doesn't gel soon I might have to give up collecting the manga. It is good in spots but it needs something to pull it together better.

Z nějakého neznámého důvodu mě totiž hrozně moc zasáhlo to, že všude najednou nastal mír. Hlavní hrdina nevykonal pomstu a místo toho svému nepříteli pomohl. :D Jako what? Vážně jsem to nechápala. :D
Obálky vypadají docela hezky, některé dokonce i velmi dobře.

The bishop’s exam comes to its dramatic conclusion for Teito Klein, Hakuren Oak, and everyone else facing the final trial, what lies deepest within their hearts. Another journey awaits Teito after the trial at Frau’s side, one that will help him to uncover his lost memories while he eludes the clutches of the Imperial Army. Frau is there not only to guard Teito, but to hunt the hunters. Not everyone is as eager to avoid or harm the Imperial Army’s Black Hawks as Teito and Frau. Shuri Oak throws himself upon them, much to the Hawks’ chagrin, revealing a more human side to Teito’s enemies.

The action scenes were gorgeous as were the depictions of the setting and the characters. The dialogue wavered between dramatic, hilarious, and at times simply not making sense in some of the more awkward moments. Teito’s motivations continue to be less than consistent and difficult to grasp. At times I found his speech hard to follow. His interactions with Frau continue to be hilarious and endearing, with the big bishop often hurling him over his shoulder or picking him up when he gets lost in a crowd. Ayanami and the Black Hawks developed into much more complex antagonists as they were forced to deal with a hapless Shuri Oak and acquire a couple of battle slaves, one who is quite star-struck with him. A new aspect of this world comes into play in the Seven God Houses along with a hint of a mystery involving Castor’s back story. Readers meet a new character, Capella, and an over the top antagonist, the Mighty Carl. The latter ends up getting in the way, yet accidentally helping Frau and Teito along on their journey. Overall, the plot was exciting and fun, picking up where the anime left off, exploring new territory for the character to flesh them out within, adding dimension to the world and the story itself. For all of these qualities, I give this four stars.

The anime stopped around 2 chapters into this volume.

A couple of new characters are introduced; a set of female combat slave twins and a young slave boy named Capella. Shuri, Hakuren's brother, makes a reappearance. Capella is adorable and I want them to keep him though that's not going to happen.

Hakuren wrote Teito a letter, and he's such a mother hen and it's sweet. He's also apprenticing under Castor.

The first house of the seven gods they go to is Hausen and it has a picture of a boy that could be Castor who apparently died 10 years ago. It also has the mark of Fest, so it would tie together if it is him.

It turns into a journey kinda thing both physically and metaphorically. They obtained a child along the way. Ugghh, is this BL or not, it tends to be unclear in shounen. It's probably either shounen ai or bromance.

I wanna say politics has taken a backseat in this but nope. We're seeing first hand the result of war and discrimination. More about slaves and their maltreatment. Teito's heart seems to be breaking everytime his child offhandedly say stuff like it's so nice to get food without having to work first

I really love the art style of this series and how distinctive it is, but sometimes it's hard to follow the dark and elaborate action scenes. I greatly prefer the scenes that delve into characterization and the relationships between the characters, especially with Frau and Teito taking Capella into their care, showing Teito's memories as a slave and how he has compassion for those in bondage.

It’s acceptable, but will never be my favorite. It jumps around sometimes and muddled the picture so that you don’t remember some of the more important aspects. Some of the images also have too much going on. It is okay though, they got rid of my favorite character quite early..

The first part of this volume was amazing, but then it kind of slowed down. So I hope it picks back up the pace soon!

This can be fast paced, flitting from one setting to another and I'm getting confused. I still like the synopsis for the series, I just apparently can't keep up.

Finally Teito passed his exam, congratulations!
He has to escape with Bishop Frau, as his apprentice now, and is heading towards the 6th district.
It is really nice to see Teito and Frau acting in the “outside world”. Teito seems so innocent and naive... And in the next moment he gets angry and stands up for a person who can`t fight back himself. Teito is a really charming character.
The introduction of the slave Capella was pretty cute, as they saved him and later meet his salesman Carl again, who tried to get a revenge. At least he tried ;)
Some more information about the Raggs War, the mysteries of Father and the background of Teito is given, but I still can`t really link it to understand all this... It is still quite confusing sometimes. I would like to know more about Teito, about his past as a combat slave, his relationship with Father etc. Hope there will be more.
Hyuuga was shown to be a really skilled fighter and he has a sense of humor. I am beginning to like him :)
Ayanami will continue his search for Teito, as he needs him to use the Eye of Mikhail. I`m eager to find out, what exactly he plans. The appearance of Shuri Oak is quite amusing, as he gets his position only due to the influence of his father. Nobody really wants him within the black hawks. They get new members, too.
Now Teito and his companions will search for a way to go to “The Land of Seele”. I am sure they will discover some mysteries along the way.

I have tried so hard to like this series, but I have finally thrown in the towel. I'm not sure if its because I have such long intervals between volumes or what it is, but I find this series rather confusing and chaotic. Yes, yes, I understand the battle, but I just can't keep track! It's a great concept, but the actual book just doesn't work for me. I have the basic story line, but now it just seems bogged down and it's not really moving along. So, it's time to say good bye to yet another manga series.

Teito and Hakuren are onto the final stage of the exam individually. After Teito completes the exam he has to escape immediately because the military is closing in.

Overall I felt that this volume was more of a bridge to start the journey to reveal Teito's background and to reveal the bigger picture of the series. With that being said this was still a well craft volume with a lot going on but I can feel that it is just the beginning.
