Learn about some of the lost legends of Equestria. As Sunburst explores Star Swirl the Bearded's study, he finds previously unknown legends written by the famous wizard himself. Diving into the stories, he learns of Equestria's history and its secrets.
The six stories center around the Elements of Virtue: strength, bravery, healing, beauty, hope, and sorcery. Each has its own lesson such as the importance of listening to others, keeping a work/life balance, and having compassion. My favorite stories were about Somnambula, Mage Meadowbrook, and Mistmane. We also learn more about Flash Magnus, Rockhoof, Star Swirl the Bearded.
Nice artwork that matches the action and humor of the My Little Pony universe.
Would definitely recommend this for fans already familiar with the show, especially with the basics of the Pillars of the Pony World.
Though there is a simple frame story that connects the legends together, this volume ends on quite the cliffhanger. Interested to learn of Sunburst's revelations in the second volume.
I'm not a graphic novel reader (I've tried, but just not my thing) but the 6 year old wanted to give this a try. This volume includes 6 separate stories (1 for each of the legendary ponies introduced in Season 7 of the show) with a framing device set right at the end of Season 7. We read these a loud and my daughter enjoyed flipping through and looking at the pictures on her own during a long car ride. Sonamubula's story was the silliest and probably my favorite.
Legends of Magic is a collection of stories of past Equestria. Enjoy the lore of the show? Then this book will expand your knowledge. It's a cute, fun little tale for younger readers as well, with good lessons and even a few zombie ponies :)
Starting out 2018 with this My Little Pony collected edition. I loved the introduction of the legendary characters in the last season of Friendship is Magic and how that whole storyline came together. This series is a great way to explore Equestria and its history with the six legends as the base. The art matches the style of the show with plenty of details and expressive characters. Sunburst should be on the cover instead of Twilight Sparkle, but that's really a minor quibble.
Though MLP is a show that I'm totally ok with my kid watching, I'm not a huge fan myself. I don't dislike it, it's just not something I want to mainline (like say Voltron lol), but if my kid's watching, chances are I'm watching it peripherally and grateful it's not something terrible.
So, when we hit up the neighborhood independent comic book store and she found this graphic novel, I nodded benevolently and agreed. You want comic books? Sure thing, tiny, nascent bibliophibian nerd.
I of course also put myself on the hook to read it to her, but now that we have, I'm pretty glad I did. The storyline follows Stygian, a young pony whose town is taken over by evil sirens, so he uses his wits, knowledge, and perseverence to pull together a handful of legendary heroes to come save his town. Through the book, he claims that he isn't a hero, and though the heroes contradict this by citing the fact that he's the lynch pin holding them together, he ends up sitting out the climactic battle. The ponies he gathers are many and varied, and he (and the growing group) help each new recruit in turn solve their big problem in order to free them up to join. While there are indeed pitched battles, many problems are solved by ingenuity, kindness, and just plain listening to the actual problem at hand before trying to hit it with a stick.
Apparently this is where my limited pony knowledge fails me since this is the origin story for the pillars of Equestria, shows us Luna before she becomes Nightmare Moon, and is a setup for some backstory about Stygian, to whom I had zero points of reference. oops. Either I'm going to live with the lack of knowledge or I'm going to buy the kid more pony comics. *cough*
This was a nice collection of six stories, with Sunburst as the unifying element. The stories were about:
- Starswirl the Bearded (element of sorcery) - a fun look at Celestia and Luna as teenagers. - Rockhoof (strength) - Mistman (beauty) - about the problems building Canterlot Castle. - Flash Magnus (bravery) - nice tornado illustration, but there were too many inconsistencies in the story. - Somnambula (hope) - great story with a funny snake diagram. - Mage Meadowbrook (healing) - fun zombie story.
There were also some extra full-page illustrations that didn't have anything to do with the stories, for example one with the Mane Six as characters from Alice in Wonderland.
I look forward to reading the next collection in the series.

This was a great set of historical stories in the MLP universe. I enjoyed reading backgrounds that had been touched on during the television series, and seeing the familiar characters in comic form was amazing.
This vol had quite of few mini stories of ponys of old doing daring and amazing things. My favorite was the Egyptian Pony named somnambula she's is just the cutest :) It's an alright vol check it out
A collection of tales from the equestrian legends, each issue focused on a specific deed a legend has done. I really did not like Somnambula's story, Mistmane and Meadowbrook were the best. It can be a bit campy at times but it was nice to read the extra lore of Equestria.
A really nice prequel for Season 7 finale. I love the series and it's a very nice touch they created a new branch with more Equestria's history, this time its heroes.
