Read in the Heralds of the Siege anthology

A nice short tale about Legio Audax, a Traitor Titan Legion of the Dark Mechanicum, fighting against forces of the recently born Adeptus Titanicus.
Loved the battle scenes with Chaos Warhounds hunting bigger enemy Titans with downgraded modified versions of Ursus Claw systems, the great harpoons used by the World Eaters flagship, the Conqueror, for boarding actions, and the ending was a good one, but the whole tale was essentially an extended cut of an Aaron Dembski-Bowden's idea previously depicted in the awesome Betrayer novel.
Not bad at all but the déjà vu feeling was unsettling.

May 2024 Read using the Horus Heresy Omnibus Project Reading Order Omnibus XX Shadows of the Warmaster IV The Dead and the Dying (https://www.heresyomnibus.com/omnibus...) as part of my Oath of Moment to complete the Horus Heresy series and extras.

This is Epic (or Adeptus Titanicus, depending on the edition) Titan on Titan action!

The Ember Wolves are fierce pack of Warhound Titans under the banner of the Warmaster, specially armed with Ursus Claws originally the colossal close combat grappling hooks mounted on World Eaters voidships, repurposed as Titan-killers, as they face off against the true god machine that is the Imperator Titan. The only thing more dangerous than this feral pack of war machines is the unfettered rage and ambition of the Traitor princeps and the furious machine spirits with which they interface...

I'm always saying I'm no the biggest action gal, and I'm no, it's true, but when it's good I thoroughly enjoy myself and this is good, I'd even say great. Well written action and handling of the cyclopean scale of these behemoths and ferocity that drives them.

Honestly, I'm so close to giving this full marks and I think if this as just a Warhammer 40K story it would just scrape it, but this is the Horus Heresy and I need just a tiny bit more for five stars. I don't know how I would have felt about this before, but I am living in a post Ordo Sinister world, so your Titan story has a true ordeal in being compared to magick magick Titan, what?!

I have to give full credit to Sanders for the great action and some interesting interpersonal stuff with the Ember Wolves. This is definitely more than just Titans playing Rockem Sockem Robots and the situation is handled well, but it is a little too by the numbers to not need exquisite prose to elevate it.

I will happily take blood good all round though!

Through the Horus Heresy Omnibus Project and my own additions, I have currently read 44 Horus Heresy novels (inc. 1 repeat and 6 anthologies), 24 novellas (inc. 2 repeats), 134 short stories/ audio dramas (inc. 10+ repeats), as well as the Macragge's Honour graphic novel, all 17 Primarchs novels, 4 Primarchs short stories/ audio dramas, 3 Characters novels, and 2 Warhammer 40K further reading novels and 1 short story...this run, as well as writing 1 short story myself.

I couldn't be more appreciative of the phenomenal work of the Horus Heresy Omnibus Project, which has made this ridiculous endeavour all the better and has inspired me to create and collate a collection of Horus Heresy and Warhammer 40,000 documents and checklists (http://tiny.cc/im00yz). There are now too many items to list here, but there is a contents and explainer document here (http://tiny.cc/nj00yz).

I liked this more then most Titanicus excerpts. The ending was an especially nice touch.

The Ember Wolves are a Titan Legio loyal to the Warmaster. They previously appeared in "Betrayer" aligned with the World Eaters, and as part of the invasion force in the Webway in "Master of Mankind".

Collected in "Heralds of the Siege" this story reflects the state of the Warmaster's forces as they approach Terra. Undisciplined and blood-thirsty the traitor forces fight for individual glory, the chain of command is either ignored or overthrown. You get the sense that even if Horus had succeeded at Terra, his own rule would have immediately collapsed as disparate forces turned on each other. There is a feeling of fatalism by the ending of the story, a weariness as if wanting this to end, that there has been too much fighting.

The action is intense and visceral, as the Ember Wolves work together to take down much larger prey.

A short and fairly intense battle between a corrupted titan wolf pack and a much larger imperial foe. The characters felt well described and the action scenes were thrilling. The best and worst part was the ending. I would have loved to read more, but it was a cool downer ending for all involved.

On the ‘shabby little hive world of Absalom’, forces loyal to Horus take the fight to the loyalists, including forces of the newly-formed Adeptus Titanicus. Commanding a six-strong pack of Warhound Titans, princeps Balthus Voltemand sets his sights on the towering Warmonger Titan Tantorus Magnificat.

It owes a massive debt to an Aaron Dembski-Bowden Betrayer, but is sufficiently developed that that watching this idea play out again is suitably entertaining.
