A totally unnecessary prequel to milk some more dough from the movie. You honestly couldn't care less about these characters.

Because I have been a My Little Pony fan for a long time (*cough*25 years*cough*), I am beyond excited that, beginning this Thursday, fellow fans and I will be able to see My Little Pony on the big screen. Although the 80’s ponies were my first love, I greatly enjoy following this new version, and the Friendship is Magic comics, created by IDW Publishing, have generally been quite good and very fun.



My Little Pony: Movie Prequel is not part of the ongoing comic story – instead, it’s four mostly separate one-shots providing background for some of the main and side characters who will appear in the movie. The story is very light, but I can understand that – this book wasn’t made to tell a story…it was made to hype a story. And I’m hyped! There are quite a few characters, with very neat visual designs (in fact there are only two actual ponies! How fun!), and I can’t wait to see them on the big screen.

On a negative note, I was struck that some of the artwork, particularly in the backgrounds, seemed very rushed. One of the aspects of the My Little Pony comics I enjoy most is the Easter eggs and background goings-on, and I was disappointed that many of the backgrounds in My Little Pony: Movie Prequel were flat or entirely empty.

I was already super excited for the My Little Pony movie, but after reading this comic I’m even more pumped. Keep up the good marketing, Hasbro!

Because I am a fantastic adult, I am super excited about the My Little Pony movie. SUPER ADULT. This comic is a short set of stories looking at the new characters and introducing readers to how they got to where ever it is they are in the movie. It's short and feels abbreviated, but perhaps with the movie it will feel like more than just an afterthought.

Yes, I like “My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic” enough to read the comics. They’re actually pretty funny & have amusing jokes aimed at a variety of ages. No, I’m not a brony. You can like something & not be obsessed with it. You can like things when you aren’t the target audience. Men can like things aimed at women or girls (& vice-versa). It’s a cute series with decent aesops that more people could benefit from watching / reading. I think the comics are actually occasionally better than the source. That being said, these comics are obviously meant as shorts to set up the film. Not spectacular, but decent. Fun if you’re a fan. I’d probably watch the series or read the main comic line to gauge if you’d like the series as a whole. This is not for beginner fans. Actually, ponies hardly feature in the entire collection except for the last issue or so. If you mock me for liking this series, I’ll immediately block you.

I liked this one less than the regular comics for two reasons:

1) The stories didn't deliver. I expect interesting backstories in a prequel, not obvious ones. The only story that provided any insight was Capper the cat's, about his previous experiences with friendship.

2) The visuals were less interesting, with little going on in the background. I missed checking each panel for small jokes or guest appearances.

To give a compliment when it's due, at least the book had a consistent visual style, which isn't always true for the other MLP comics.

I received a copy of this in exchange for a review.

I am not the biggest MLP fan, but my 5 year old might be. She loved this, so I gave it a 4. The typical ponies do not feature much, with the exception of a small portion of the story involving Tempest Storm. It is certainly a prequel and she says the movie has all the same characters. The drawings are well done, and the extra drawings of the ponies are beautiful. It is a good intro for kids to reading graphic novels, I think.

This is a story about Twilight the magic pony and her friends. They’ve been asked to help save Ponyville from the nasty Storm King who wants it all for himself. With some extra help from Capper the cat they manage to banish the Storm King and Ponyville is saved.
Parts of the story were quite tense, other parts were quite sad but it was always exciting. In the end I was relieved. I am looking forward to reading it to my little sister once she’s a bit older, I know she’ll love it!

It was an ok book. This would be good for someone who knows how to read but would improve speed.
I would assume that is a type of comic book. Very sorry but I wouldn't take my grandkids to this movie or purchase any of the other books in this series. Books for kids should have content and I
don't see any in this series. Sorry Nancy

After seeing the movie I became a huuuge fan of MLP! I can’t believe everything I was missing out on! And who doesn’t love to take a break from deep reading with an artsy beautiful graphic novel. I enjoyed the back stories on the characters and why they are the way they are in the movie! And the extra art pieces in here were beautiful ❤️

An exciting prequel to the film.

A peek into the lives of some of the supporting cast of the Mlp Movie, this series of stories explores who these characters are and why they are the way we find them in the film. I especially enjoyed the Tempest story. Recommended for fans of the movie and pony fans in general.

Like the movie itself, this was meh. We still don't get any background on the Storm King himself, arguably the most important villain from the movie, instead focusing on side character's that I really didn't care about. Capper's story was the whole 'one event completely made their life take a 180' thing, and I still don't get Tempest's backstory. You're telling me that absolutely nobody helped out little Tempest when her horn broke? How could Princess Luna let this happen to a poor little filly? I feel like the movie shouldn't even be treated as canon at this point.

Given that no ponies showed up until the last chapter, I am pretty surprised this held Mini-Me's interest. The story was kind of blah for me though - didn't seem to have quite the same humour and fun I've come to expect from the other IDW MLP comics.
