Brenda Hickey was born and raised in Prince Edward Island, Canada. Since there was nothing much to do out in the country, she quickly learned to amuse herself (and keep out of trouble) by drawing pictures and creating stories with her sisters. By 3rd grade she'd decided that she'd dedicate her life to comics and art.
As an adult nothing much changed, and she enrolled in the graphic design program at Holland College to further her skills. After graduating, she was taken in by Trapeze animation/Mugisha Ent., and created web graphics and background illustration for animation. On the side, she continued her personal comic, In the Air. Currently, she is picking up freelance work here and there, and is still plugging away on her comic on the side.

This is is the first issue of a new series by IDW that delves into some uncharted territory: the history of Equestria! Particularly, tales of magic as told by the greatest sorcerer who ever lived: Star Swirl the Bearded.

This is sure to kill my headcanon, but I'm excited, nonetheless.

Our first Legend of Magic regards Celestia and Luna, which also has me over the moon. (See what I did there?)

I actually liked how arrogant young Celestia was about her magical abilities compared to Luna. I mean, we all knew Celestia would be a prodigy. I also loved how Star Swirl pointed out to Luna how there are times when your best isn't good enough, and you need to find a new best or live with the consequences. He scolded Celestia because it wasn't her place to make that call, but conceded she had a point, and wasn't going to let Luna make excuses.

I just love that because it's how it works in the real world. We have to accept that there are others who will pick things up more quickly than we do, and if we want to keep up, we might just have to work harder. It's not fair, but that's how life works. We need to find a new best or live with the consequences, which admittedly, may not be as life or death as the ones Luna might have to live with as a princess if she can't keep up with Celestia.

The other element I liked was Luna using this dangerous magic to prove that she can operate on Celestia's level, because when criticized, it's natural to justify (I'm doing my best), and barring that, prove that you shouldn't be the target of criticism, so Luna tried doing a spell that even Celestia hasn't been able to do, with disastrous consequences.

This leads to Star Swirl teaching Celestia that a leader needs to compassionate, and the strong shouldn't mock the weak, but help them and offer encouragement instead of putting them down.

I really loved the lesson in this issue, and as always, it's awesome to see Celestia and Luna as young princesses as they learn what's necessary to be good leaders.

I'm really looking forward to the next issue!

I really like the concept for this series after reading this first book. It was exciting but the short length made it feel like I wanted a bit more to the story.

Fun read

I'm not sure if this is cannon or not but I've really wanted to know more of Starswirl and his role in teaching the sisters. Some of the faces and expressions in the scenes are adorable.
