Not as much traditional BattleMech action in this book, but some great heist-style capers for our heroic mercenary and his efforts to help the future leader of a world despite the minor detail of a revolution that has pretty much turned their world upside-down.

But I love how this story was layered in so many ways as we have our heroes on the run, taking on new identities all the while dealing with the different factions who have taken control of different parts of the planet in a confusing mess of people trying to jockey for control. But the story is ultimately one on a very personal level, which is perfect for a novella like this.

I wasn't quite sure how it was all going to end and I loved how the book ultimately surprised me. Sure, luck was also a big factor in the ending, but it totally worked and made for a great wrap-up. And that felt very...Stackpole, for lack of a better term. I love how he works out stories like this whether it's a trilogy of books or a nicely focused novella like this one.

Going through the motions on this one. If there is one thing I can say as a negative to Stackpoles work it is using Our modern slang and word structure in a futuristic setting can be somewhat off putting. Fun but saddled with issues that pull you out of the world building.

A decent continuation of the story started in Heir Apparent.
