A cultural look through fiction

Once again, Cathcart does not disappoint. I've had the pleasure of reading several of Sharon's novels now, and this latest one was just as good (nay, better) than I expected it to be.

She artfully gives us a look at New Orleans history and culture through a clever storyline that keeps you wanting more. Part of what I love about Cathcart's writing is all the research that goes into it. It shows. You can tell she did her homework, and she even does yours too with the glossary of terms she includes that allow readers to become more acquainted with French and Creole terms.

Without giving anything away, I will just say that this book is wonderfully written. It's got a bit of everything - romance, the paranormal, drama, history, and suspense. Most importantly, it sheds light on important issues concerning humanity. It's simpy a must-read for any reader.

When the term "cajun spice" is mentioned, this book is what the person is speaking of. With an endearingly charming mix of personable characters and local food the reader can almost taste, it brings the flavour as well as the heat, and simply doesn't let up. Because of how well-written it is, one needs, NEEDS, to know what happens and can't put it down until the end. Curiosity about the perplexing nightmares and how they tie into the story creates all kinds of possibilities in a person's mind, though none are as magnificent as the truth. The people, and culture, examined are not mere 2-dimensional cardboard cutouts, but rather are intricately complex alive beings with rich accents, memories, and quirks. Truth be told, this is one of those stories that is wonderfully wrapped up at the finish, but the audience is extremely hesitant to close the cover on these new friends. Be prepared for the reread urge!!

I enjoyed the weaving of present and past in this delightful page-turner. Diana is a travel writer with a twist. She shares with her readers a depth of color and culture for each of her destinations. Her articles have developed a following by the time she steps off the plane in New Orleans. Soon moments of deja vu flicker through the daylight hours just as an old nightmare returns to her sleep.
You’ll enjoy this story. I look forward to reading more by this author.

When I was learning to ghostwrite romances for my clients, I stumbled across this book; glad to see it turn up here and connect with the author.
The writing is finely tuned and profession, the characters well drawn, and all of the desired tropes and beats are there; this book will satisfy fans of the genre and maybe even convert a few new ones.

While at a conference in New Orleans (where this book is set), I was given Bayou Fire by the author after I told her I like romance novels. It was the perfect story to read while visiting NOLA. It gave me perspective on the culture, history, language, food and even street names of the town I was visiting. This is a quick read and while I typically go for a slow burn, I do think the characters’ love story still makes your heart skip a beat.

Whilst it was clear the author had done considerable research about New Orleans and the 1700’s slavery situation, both the characters and plot lacked depth and substance, there was little light/dark to scenes, no real sense of peril.

If you want an easy beach read, this is the book, if you want enthralling then look elsewhere.

"Blending two love stories together the author neatly, and cleverly, combines the past with the present to create a novel that is a little different from the normal idea of romantic fiction. I enjoyed the difference."
