Nobody's future is written in the stars, but we can use the stars to help write our future.
For thousands of years people have looked to the night sky for the answers to life's problems. Today's practice is a far cry from newspaper horoscopes and fortune-telling, but instead uses the ancient wisdom of astrology to help us better understand our choices and ourselves. It's not about prescriptive descriptions of personality and fate, but about putting the individual at the centre of decision making.
In The Signs, Carolyne Faulkner describes with warmth and humour the qualities associated with each star sign - the good and the bad - and explains how you can use your birth chart (a map of the night sky at the time you were born) to make smarter choices, avoid triggers to stress and forge stronger relationships. This is a clear and simple guide to using the stars to take control of every aspect of your life.
Carolyne Faulkner is the resident astrologer at the Soho House Group. She created the concept of Dynamic Astrology after 15 years studying with experts from all over the world. Her approach and methods fit within a life coaching and mentoring framework as she uses the movements of the planets to empower others to practice self-reflection and -development, helping them in many areas of their lives. Her first book The Signs was published in 2017 to critical acclaim. Her second book, You Stars, is a powerful and one-of-a-kind dynamic astrology journal for 2020, and will be published in September 2019.

As someone that loves astrology and wants to know more, this book helped me a lot to understand more things and I learned a lot. I do have to say that this is more for beginners to help you read your birth chart and understand the houses, but it was soo good.
After what feels like ages, I have finally finished this book. The Signs was really insightful and introduced me to the world of dynamic astrology, allowing me to find my birth chart and start to decode it a bit. Although this is a beginners book, I will say I had to look a lot of stuff up online because the book was asking me to interpret aspects of my planets, signs and houses which I have had no experience of before. There are some bits of my birth chart that I am still confused with but I do at least have my birth chart and some other information that I can go back to if and when I please.
For me it was a good introduction to astrology and the book helped me to look at my own chart with more understanding - now it's time to analyze it all. But I also had quite a lot of problems with the book.
1. The constant name-dropping! Damn, it was hard to get past... well, it wasn't name-dropping per se since no names were dropped, but the author made sure (many, many, many times!) that she is so very important to so many very "important people". 2. She used too many examples (of before mentioned "V.I.Ps") for my liking. It took space away from more valuable information. 3. It was not always the best layout/setup(?). I really liked that there was a Gone wrong and Gone right for each planet, sign and house, but it doesn't work when some of the Gone rights is mentioned in Gone wrong etc. It made it difficult for me to make notes, since I write in hand. 4. Some of the signs got a lot og attention while others hardly got any (and some had more negative information than positive). That is just not good when the book is supposed to be a guide. Balance!
Excellent explanation of what most of those markings on an astrological birth chart are all about. Well written and easy to understand instructions. I learnt a lot about myself!
Some details aren't there (like what are trines, squares, north node, midheaven etc) so perhaps the author will put together an advanced text!
I really loved this book. It taught me the huge difference between the magazine horoscopes and astrology, for which it's already worth reading, trust me, even if you are sceptical about reading the stars.
It's less about telling your future and more about learning to read yourself, becoming a better version of yourself and exploiting your positive traits to the fullest. You are not just your 'sun sign', on which your daily/weekly/monthly horoscope is usually based, but you have all of the zodiac on your chart, and that is why e. g. two Libras are not the same.
It teaches you how to read your own chart and analyze it. It's a really nice exercise and a wonderful way to think deeply about yourself and everyone else around you. I especially enjoyed reading the charts of my friends and family, it always proved to be right, and they were very surprised how accurate a picture it painted of them.
I highly recommend this book to anybody who can open their mind up about astrology just a little bit and learn about it before judging it too harshly. :)
"Znaki.
Ja podeszłam do tematu neutralnie, z pewną dozą ciekawości. I o ile cała skala możliwości odczytania kosmogramu okazała się niezwykle interesująca, to niektóre argumenty Autorki wydały mi się zbyt naciągane. Wynika to pewnie z mojego doświadczenia z pracami naukowymi - ale można w niektórych miejscach zarzucić Autorce dobieranie odpowiednich przykładów, żeby pasowały do tezy.
Such an interesting book! I did take a hot minute to read it but that’s not a reflection of the content of this book. It provides very detailed explanations of each of the signs, planets and houses and really helped to understand basic astrology!
This book is a wonderful read for anyone interested in astrology! It is great for beginners or those who already have a basic idea about what astrology actually is (not those horoscopes you read in the paper and not just your Sun sign, but so much more: a Moon sign, a Rising sign, a Mercury Sign, a Venus sign, a Mars sign and so on...) but feel overwhelmed by all of this new information. For example, I could not for the life of me get a basic understanding of the houses, but this book made it fun and easy. For anyone interested in astrology, but fairly new, I would recommend this book.
The book is fun, but it does take astrology very seriously. The author does not sugar-coat anything; she tells it like it is for every sign, the good and the bad. If you have any insecurities about your personality or your regular habits, this book could easily trigger you. As fun as this book can be, I would approach this caution. Don't read the "gone wrong" sections of your signs if you aren't ready to be criticized! (Unless, of course, you don't take any of this seriously and it's all just fun and games for you... but even then, you may feel offended.)
For me, going into this book and this exploration was about self-improvement. I didn't want my ego to be stroked... at least not too much... (Hey, my Venus is in Leo after all! I need a bit of ego-stroking!) I wanted to look at both the beautiful and the ugly aspects of myself, and this book was PERFECT for this! I highly recommend for anyone looking to improve themselves. I've only been on this journey for a month or so and already it's helped me so much more than any other personality type indicator (eg: MBTI) ever has.
I will definitely be returning to this book as I need and want to. I will probably purchase it in the future (I took it out of my local library). I tend to borrow books whenever possible, and I try to only hold on to those which I feel I need around me at all times, and 'The Signs' may very well be one of those books! The knowledge inscribed within its pages is invaluable!
I think this book is great for people who are beginners to astrology or are wanting to learn how to read your own birth chart! Although I’m not necessarily new to astrology, I did learn some good info.
The one thing I didn’t really like is the relations to health & mental health for certain signs. Each to their own beliefs but, I just don’t feel like it’s a good idea to associate signs with certain mental illnesses or any illnesses or health problems. These things can happen to anyone.
Another thing to mention is a lot of the information comes from the authors personal experiences, which in my opinion can be good and bad! I think personally it may have been a tiny bit too opinionated from her own experiences. Don’t forget we all have different responses and reactions to different signs and personalities. But in saying that, it’s nice to see another’s take on astrology!
A very modern take on an astrology book & not so much traditional but still very interesting. Loved the way the information about teaching you how to read your chart, planet & houses was said. Didn’t enjoy the interpretations and descriptions of the signs.
I fully agree with Ana, I've read this one in Italian and being an astrologer myself I would say: a practical guide for astrology absolute beginners, with a rich set of recommendations taken from the hands-on experience of the author. I appreciated her constant invitation to search for and express the best side of the values hidden by signs and planets. Among the aspects I didn't really like: the absence of a reflection upon astrological aspects, which is an important issue in reading a chart, and the fact that the reader isn't told that transit may affect your ability to express the brightest side of your signs and planets quite often in a lifetime rather than seldom. But maybe there will be a follow-up book that completes the guide, or at least this is what I hope! I talk about this in a more detailed way in my article here: https://en.rivoluzionesolare.net/post... Finally: good book, absolutely worth the purchase and reading
This guide to the stars is definitely a very good introduction to newcomers in the world of astrology. The descriptions of the planets, houses and signs are simple and very well understandable, but not less complete or accurate because of that. There have been multiple times when I laughed out loud because some of the descriptions are so on-point that it just humurous.
The book teaches you to read your own birth chart and that of others and does a very good job in this. As the author warns, this skill won't come overnight and requires practice and dedication. The process is slow but once you start getting used to it, with help of the book, it becomes more and more easy. I would highly suggest to read the examples of famous people's birth chart, even if they don't interest you. Otherwise you will miss a great deal of how the reading of charts actually works, as it can be very nuanced.

I love reading about zodiac signs etc and after I had enough understanding of my sun sign Scorpio, I wanted to know more. I printed my birth chart and was obviously quite lost with it at first. This book was meant to be my full guide to astrology but I'm sad to say that I need a book to understand this book. I had to check some online resources to be able to comprehend what was going on. And even after getting those guidelines from web I didn't quite like this. Maybe it's just me but this really didn't work. The book is really beautiful but the contents I found a bit lacking. Two stars.
This book was so easy to read and is one that you can flick to chapters or just read it normally. I’ll definitely be coming back to this one time & time again as a guide when doing birth charts!
"Znaki. Spójrz w gwiazdy, odkryj siebie" to przede wszystkim piękne wydanie w twardej oprawie ze schludnie rozmieszczonym tekstem bogatym w tabele i wykresy. Notatki będą nam potrzebne, jeżeli naprawdę chcemy... no właśnie, czego?
Autorka w idealny sposób nam to objaśnia.
If i could give no stars, I would. Absolutely don't read this if you begin with astrology — this book will give you the worst idea of a sign, not to mention that some descriptions are so shallow I had to laugh. The author visibly favors some of signs and can't tell anything really positive about the others (Libra is the best example). Moreover, the autor suggest some illnesses and sexualities are more related to one sings than to the others which is a COMPLETE ABSURD.
Another minus is showing of how important coligations author has — "oh look I know so many important people". Okay ma'am, I wanna know something about astrology, not your rich friends, move on.
Also, I don't like the fact that in this book is NO WORD about the most crucial thing in astrology — aspects. It's fulfillment of a chart, chart is not complete without aspects and reading them.
Another thing — even though author says "go to doctor if you have a problem" but her following words, words describing signs, mildly suggest that your chart is at fault of illness. SICK!!!
It's coaching book, not a book for a beginner in astrology.
¿Y vosotras qué signo solar, lunar y ascendente sois?
I am new to astrology and although I found the book to be a good read, I didn't enjoy a few things.
1. There were too many comparisons with people from the author's life. I think we don't need gossip whilst reading a guide to astrology.
2. There aren't descriptions for each sign and their relevant position under each planet and house. It kind of leaves an incomplete picture of what the reader might want to seek for their birth chart.
3. Finally, I had managed to get my birth chart from the Dynamic Astrology website. However, when I went back to find the chart for my friends and family some months after I used it (last September), the site no longer operated. I tried searching on Carolyne Faulkner's social media and found no updates to her last posts in July 2022. I really would like some sort of explanation as to whether she is active.
I am beginning to doubt whether the author is, dare I say it, unreliable?
I read tons of reviews saying this was a great guide for absolute beginners. I am an absolute beginner... And maybe it's just me, but I was completely lost reading this. It was too complicated for me, not step by step enough. I still don't understand my birth chart. The constant use of examples actually felt very confusing, and I was bored with all the blah blah blah about the author's successful clients. But when it got to the explanations about the signs everything seemed very simplistic? The book is literally called The Signs so I expected something more in-depth. And the explanations sometimes felt downright wrong– some signs are said to be more likely to have mental illnesses, which, honestly, what??? I'm very uncomfortable with linking mental health and astrology. And some signs are said to be more likely to be bi? Uh?? That's absurd. So a very disappointing read for me :(
preface my review with the statement, I love reading and exploring my own birth chart and the birth chart's of family and friends. If you like the idea of astrology and want to learn more about how to read a birth chart, this is an excellent book. Many people write off astrology because they find horoscopes wonky or don't feel connected to their Sun sign.
There is so much more to astrology than those pieces, and this book does an excellent job laying it all out. I loved how easy it was to read and flip back and forth to pull pieces together.
It lays out Sun, Moon and Rising signs. Also discusses houses and how to interpret.
You can pull a birth chart online, but this book adds great context and helps you understand how to interpret the information from various sources.
A really solid book that balances easy to understand language for beginners with a wealth of information on the subject. This book heavily focuses on each of the 12 zodiac signs and their "gone right" and "gone wrong" traits with a much smaller section dedicated to houses and general background. The insight into the signs and the various ways that each can manifest has been very fascinating and I will certainly keep referring back to this book in my future work. The book reads like an entertaining novel not as a boring slug of a "study book" whilst not losing sight of the massive amount of educational content that it clearly set out to convey. A great addition to any astro-loving bookworm`s library.
3.5 stars. I admit I didn't read this whole thing cover to cover - but I did read the parts that felt relevant to the biggest parts of my chart. I appreciated some things I hadn't heard before (like that having Sag or Aquarius planets can help offset some Capricorn tendencies). The author has pretty binary views of gender, and can be a little name-droppy. I also didn't personally like her examples of "I know a Scorpio who does this" - I generally love astrology, but something about that reductionist view of individuals brings out the skeptic/rebel in me.
