With Sanji forced into a political marriage by his scheming family, Luffy and members of the Straw Hats enter enemy territory to try to rescue him. But up against Big Mom, an Emperor of the Sea, do they even stand a chance?
Eiichiro Oda (尾田栄一郎, Oda Eiichirō) is a Japanese manga artist, best known as the creator of the manga and anime One Piece.
As a child, Oda was inspired by Akira Toriyama's works and aspired to become a manga artist. He recalls that his interest in pirates was probably sparked by the popular TV animation series titled Vicky the Viking. He submitted a character named Pandaman for Yudetamago's classic wrestling manga Kinnikuman. Pandaman was not only used in a chapter of the manga but would later return as a recurring cameo character in Oda's own works.

Still heartbroken over Sanji (I don't say I cried, but...this manga ruined me once more), hating Pudding and WTF is this with Bege? This is all such a mess and Luffy doesn't make anything better...as if he ever does.
This was a big volume and yeah it starts off with the usual finding by Sanji of the woman he is marrying and their plans for the Vinsmoke family, reunion of Luffy and Sanji and others and some interesting stuff with Big Mom and Brook and the mirror world strangely until all are together and make a plan with Capone and its interesting where the series is heading. Its a whole series of conspiracies. Good volume and so much detailing and planning, feels like a thriller movie. The art was good too and the moment between Sanji and Luffy was so emotional.

You'd think Big Mom had enough Observation Haki to notice a bunch of folks - potential assassins - sneaking about her bedroom. But then, she's established so enormously tough and unkillable that maybe they all are just flies to her, barely worth waking up for. Hmm.
Teaming up with Capone Bege was a completely unexpected thing for me, a surprise all the way to when Jinbei actually suggested it: he's just the kind of a guy the Straw Hats would normally go and beat up. But as Luffy says, it does make sense. They need the allies and he's done his homework.
Plot thickens, conspiracies keep building up, but most importantly, Sanji's back. Kind of.
The Whole Cake Island arc continues with its rollercoaster nature as the fight against the Big Mom Pirates takes a few hard turns. Certainly seems like the Big Mom Pirates and Fire Tank Pirates are ASOIAF fans considering the wedding surprise they had planned. Admittedly I was caught off guard by that nice twist that Pudding isn’t all that she seemed (the phrase “honey trap” comes to mind). I was thinking there would have to be some sort of development to break up her and Sanji at the altar but this was a good and unexpected swerve on Oda Sensei’s part.
On the subject of Sanji, it felt like they were already trying to resolve the Sanji and Luffy conflict early but I suppose with everything else going on its better not to drag out the reunification. As for more details about Sanji and his family, I wouldn’t say the reveal about the cause of Sanji being morally better than his brothers is as tragic as the rest of his new childhood origin story but it does add a heartwarming dynamic to the story/his relationship with his mom that adds to its emotional weight.
Other parts of note:
- It was nice to finally see Jinbei finally breaking with Big Mom and he thought out a way to take on Big Mom. - Interesting finally seeing Bege’s reasons for marrying Charlotte. Oda Sensei has been exploring the stories of some of the Worst Generation like Law but I appreciate getting a little bit more on Bege compared to some of the others as I actually found him interesting before. - Apparently I’m an idiot that’s been binging One Piece too quickly (or Oda Sensei has made things too complicated again) for not realizing Charlotte and Lola were separate characters. So no big reunion for Nami yet but its still sweet that her friendship with Lola continues to pay dividends.
Overall Volume 85 was an interesting volume, simultaneously feeling like it wrapped things up for the first part of the arc while getting things ready for the wedding ceremony. Certainly will be interesting to see if the One Piece version of the Red Wedding will work out for anyone

2025 reread : the scene where Luffy and Sanji meet in the rain? I feel like I didn't truly understand it before. Don't get me wrong, Sanji still isn't my favorite strawhat. But this is at least the second time I reread this arc and I think it's the first time it resonates with me this much. Weirdly I think I always understood Sanji's side fairly well, I just think this time around I understood Luffy's side better? Beyond the promise that he made to Sanji to wait for him, I think this time I saw the growth in Luffy. Where in Water 7 he lashed out when Usopp said he was leaving, here he understands that Sanji isn't free to do what he wants. I think Luffy understood where Usopp was coming from in W7 but handled it poorly, and here he understands Sanji and has learned to deal better with the situation. Beautiful. Also : the strawhats are so competent? Everyone was instrumental to getting them in a pretty good position to get out of Big Mom's territory with everything they came to get.
I love the political machinations in this arc. Everyone is playing everyone and Luffy slowly discovers it all. Then promptly wrecks all the carefully laid plans because he is Luffy. Gotta love how the crew gets to shine. Brook completes his mission. Chopper takes over the mirror world. Nami holds her own in combat. Love it. I also like how this arc makes Sanji more bearable for me (he had gotten annoying). Though I feel like they oversell his "big heart" and his "kindness".
Volume 85: Chapter 849-858 Saga 9: Whole Cake Island Arc 29: Whole Cake Island
Sanji knows the truth about Big Mom's plan from Pudding where the Vinsmoke Family will be killed tomorrow during his wedding. Luffy and Nami already knows Pudding's true colors. Jinbe saves Luffy and Nami from the book prison.
Brook fights 1 vs. 1 against Big Mom but he is easily defeated. He was kept hostage by Big Mom. Pudding revealed she was from Third-Eyed People. She has the power the read poneglyph.
Pedro fights againts Baron Egoo who evolved to Viscount Chick and evolved again to Count Chicken. Pedro blew himself up but managed to escape using Mirro-World. Chopper and Carrot then saved Nami and Jinbe. After that, they saved Brook from Big Mom. Brook managed to steal a copy of Big Mom's poneglyphs.
Luffy went back to the spot where his promised to wait for Sanji. Sanji also went back to the spot along with a bento that he cooked. Sanji and other crews settle down.
Jinbe told Luffy that Bege initial intention is to kill Big Mom. So he proposed to Luffy to team up with Bege.

WHOLE CAKE ISLAND ARC - PART 3 1. oooohhh pudding if i catch you pudding pudding if i catch you pudding
2. if i was an evil big bad guy, i would quake in my boots if the straw hats invaded my castle, because they manage to fuck up EVERYTHING. literally, they would put my life in RUIN.
3. w reiju
4. sanji bringing the food to luffy. man, i fucking love them. luffy has such a high emotional IQ even though he is a little dumb fuck most of the other time
5. i enjoy caesar as a hostage so much, he is so funny
Really fun story, and adds a lot of depth to Sanji, but the fan service is stupid and over the top, which ruins the story. Oda is getting worse the older he gets with it.
