Judy Moody & Friends #10
Not-So-Lucky Lefty
Mighty righty Judy Moody is out of her element in this righty-to-lefty switcheroo just right for newly independent readers.
Left-handers are creative. Left-handers are geniuses. Half of all cats are lefties! (Or so says Stink.) But Judy is a righty . . . and Judy is feeling left out. Tomorrow is Left Handers Day, and Stink and Dad, the southpaws in the Moody family, are celebrating at the pretzel factory. Judy is allowed to come along on one condition: she has to be left-handed — the whole entire day. It’s on!

About the author
Megan McDonald
321 books751 followers"Sometimes I think I am Judy Moody," says Megan McDonald, author of the Judy Moody series, the Stink series, and THE SISTERS CLUB. "I'm certainly moody, like she is. Judy has a strong voice and always speaks up for herself. I like that."
For Megan McDonald, being able to speak up for herself wasn't always easy. She grew up as the youngest of five sisters in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Her father, an ironworker, was known to his coworkers as "Little Johnny the Storyteller." Every evening at dinner the McDonalds would gather to talk and tell stories, but Megan McDonald was barely able to get a word in edgewise. "I'm told I began to stutter," she says, leading her mother to give her a notebook so she could start "writing things down."
Critically acclaimed, the Judy Moody books have won numerous awards, ranging from a PUBLISHERS WEEKLY Best Book of the Year to an International Reading Association Children's Choice. "Judy has taken on a life of her own," the author notes, with nearly 3 million Judy Moody books in print. Interestingly, the feisty third-grader is highly popular with boys and girls, making for a strong base of fans who are among Megan McDonald's strongest incentives to keep writing, along with "too many ideas and a little chocolate." And now -- by popular demand -- Judy Moody's little brother, Stink, gets his chance to star in his own adventures! Beginning with STINK: THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING KID, three more stories, and his own encyclopedia, STINK-O-PEDIA, Stink's special style comes through loud and strong -- enhanced by a series of comic strips, drawn by Stink himself, which are sprinkled throughout the first book. About the need for a book all about Stink, Megan McDonald says, "Once, while I was visiting a class full of Judy Moody readers, the kids, many with spiked hair à la Judy's little brother, chanted, 'Stink! Stink! Stink! Stink! Stink!' as I entered the room. In that moment, I knew that Stink had to have a book all his own."
More recently, Megan McDonald has recalled some of her own childhood with the warmth, humor -- and squabbles -- of three spunky sisters in THE SISTERS CLUB.
Megan McDonald and her husband live in Sebastopol, California, with two dogs, two adopted horses, and fifteen wild turkeys that like to hang out on their back porch.

I think that this book is amazing! Because Judy Moody was a righty and Stink Moody was a lefty and it was lefty day and Stink and Stink's dad were going to the purple eaters place to celebrate. And Judy Moody came with but she was a righty and she worked so hard to be a lefty but everything went wrong. But this is where the amazement comes in. If you have a really good goal then you go on the purple eaters honor wall and Stink was having a rootbeer float and Judy hit a golf ball and it shot into Stink's rootbeer float.
And I thought it was so, so awesome! Because Judy wasn't so good at all the other stuff but the last, hardest thing - she rocked it!
The end.

Haha, okay, that was cute. It stretched things at times, of course, but it had a realistic sibling dynamic, messages about perseverance, and a feel-good ending.

My daughter is left-handed. I have no idea how as both me and my husband and my son are right handed. Lol. This is Judy's adventure as she tries to navigate the day using her left hand. It sure wasn't easy but she had loads of fun, nonetheless.

The reason why I purchased this book initially was because of the title:' Not-So-Lucky Lefty', my son is left-handed and I thought it would be a great book for us to read together over the March Break. Well, Megan McDonald did not disappoint. In the story, Stink & his Father plan to celebrate Left-Hander's Day at 'It's Raining Pretzels' and Judy, a Right-hander wants to celebrate with them and so swears that she will use her left hand for the entire day if she can join them. The book was full of spin-activity opportunities that we took full advantage of. At the 'It's Raining Pretzels' Judy & Stink made & ate pretzels in various shapes including Mustaches and Hot Dogs with Pretzel buns. My son and I made our own soft Pretzels, in various shapes including mustaches and rolled some hot dogs into them as well. The Moodys' made a structure out of pretzels that won them some free mini golf tickets. At the entrance of 'Goonie-Golf Place' stands a statue of a giant-purple-people-eater and Stink orders a Rootbeer Float while they were golfing. So while we made & ate our pretzels & pretzel dogs, we listened & sang the song and had Rootbeer Floats for dessert as well. Without ruining the end of the story, I will add that the last part of the story had my son laughing so hard that we ended up reading it a couple of times. He also gave his father a verbal summary of the book and then read the last part to him as well. A very fun read!!!

Not-So-Lucky Lefty: Judy Moody and Friends
by Megan McDonald
2018 (Early Reader)
Not-So-Lucky Lefty by Megan McDonald is a fun early chapter book in the Judy Moody and Friends series. The book centers around Judy and her brother, Stink. Judy is right handed, but Stink and their Dad are left handed. Every year on Left-Hander's Day Stink and Dad go on a special outing. Judy wants to go along this year, but Stink insists that only left-handed people can go. So Judy pledges to be left handed for the day, and do everything with her left hand. Alot of fun ensues as accidents, messes, and happy surprises happen as Judy struggles to use her left hand. This book is a great early reader for first and second graders. The text is large and readable, and there are alot bright and engaging illustrations. The storyline is one that will keep kids entertained and wanting to see what happens next. Another benefit is that if a child likes this book there are others in the series for them. Kids will like having a series to follow.

Genre: Realistic Fiction
Grade Level: 2-4
I've always loved Judy Moody books, and I think this younger chapter book version is great! It was an easy read and very suitable for starting chapter books. The story was still as fun as the longer ones, and had very colorful pictures. Judy and Stink's sibling relationship is so funny and I bet many of my students will be able tp relate to them, so I will definitely be recommending these books for younger, independent readers.

My 6-year-old niece brought this book home from the library and we read it together. I am the only lefty in the family so I thought it was cute she got it to share with me. It was a cute book and really makes it apparent how people can take for granted the right-handed world we live in. Many lefties are ambidextrous by necessity. I love that I am adaptable enough to do most things with both hands.
It was a good lesson to learn that was also fun and not in-your-face or preachy.

Right Handed Judy Moody, takes a pledge to only use her left hand to spend Left Hander's Day with her dad, and her brother Stink, who are both lefties. Judy discovers it's not easy being left handed. But being a trooper, she makes the best of it, and as the day comes to an end Judy is surprised by what happens to her.

This book was pretty funny, with right-handed Judy Moody celebrating Left-Handers Day as a leftie with her left-handed brother, Stink, and leftie dad. In the end, Judy plays golf (left-handed, of course) at a hard hole while Stink is drinking a root beer float, and Judy lands the golf ball smack in the middle of the float! Really funny, I enjoyed reading it.

A cute story, for beginner chapter readers, large print and bright illustrations. When Left Handers Day rolls around Judy feels left out and the only way to fit in is to use her left hand. A great introduction to Judy Moody and her brother Stink.

Stink is left-handed, but Judy is not. She tries to do things left-handed for a whole day so she can attend a left-handed event with Stink and their father. I enjoy reading this series with my daughter.

Very nice look into seeing how it is to have differences, but still be able to learn from each other and get along despite those differences.
