Overall, an interesting entry in my quest to finish every series I’ve started. I read some of these with a younger brother a long time ago, and they were about the only thing available on the digital library for a while. It was a fun, easy read that I’ve already recommended to some parents, and it was very interesting to see how the series progressed while being passed off from author to author. I wish I was able to find more information on how the planning process works, because that’s an unusual setup.

1:5: Unsurprisingly, Riordan does a good job setting up characters, creating some memorable, archetypal characters for the rotating authors to be able to pick up. A few points were a little cheaply dramatic for book 1, but he creates a story that makes you want more and also creates that sense of wonder and adventure that makes you want to learn more about the topics he covers.
2:3: Middling, but nothing bad.
3:3: Good character development
4:4: Watson did a lot of heavy lifting by the end, but it definitely took her a while to get comfortable writing book 4 of a series. Early on there are a lot of almost clever lines and ideas, like “She didn’t see them. She was too busy looking for them.” and “hip-hop harem” the second of which feels a little out of place in middle grade fiction and the first of which feels too stilted from her overuse of periods and simple sentences. However, she brings back the history and culture that elevates this series and expands the story a lot regarding Grace and some other key characters. A good balance developing recurring characters and ideas while also introducing new characters and ideas to keep the series from becoming too repetitive.
5:2: This one started off rough. The disguise idea was... distractingly bad. Maybe I would have found the idea funny when I was in the intended age range for these books, but 11 year olds thinly disguised as adults is more of a visual gag that doesn’t transfer well to print. This grew on me by the end, I liked what he did with airing and the Romanovs. However, the atmosphere he creates is not as compelling as other entries. In most of these you get a sense of voyeuristic travel, but his Russia setting was awfully vague, and the side characters were mostly limited to thin, silly, and slightly offensive stereotypes.
6:4 The books have really found a rhythm at this point, which is impressive considering the number of authors. We got to see a different side of Australia than I’m used to, and we got to explore deeper into Dan and Amy’s background on the more personal end, rather than the greater Cahill end. Ali stair is probably the most compelling cousin, but it is nice to see some others take center stage for a book. Watson unsurprisingly makes good on the Irina plot, and delivers a path forward for exploration of Dan and Amy’s personal history. Watson is definitely one of the authors most invested in developing the secondary plots.
7:5 This one was fun from page one! The character work is my favorite so far and there are lots of funny lines and clever little jokes. I devoured this in one sitting, and was disappointed not to have the next book at hand. Things are really coming to a head with the various plots.
8:5 This time around I felt a lot better about Korman’s entry. Some good work on Amy and Dan’s struggle with their identity and the growing picture they have of their parents.
9:5 Park steps into the characters very well, especially for joining the series so late. There are worthwhile side characters, good subplots, and she aces a major reveal in an emotionally satisfying way. It’s impressive to come into established characters that have changed hands so many times and not only do them justice, but grow them in ways that feel organic.
10:3.5 Haddix’s interpretations of the characters start ham-fisted and harsh. She also ruined some easy symbolism set up by previous authors by just spelling it out in-context, which is unimpressive. Her versions of these characters eventually started feeling more familiar, but it was unfortunate that in book 10 of 10 there was such a disorienting break in style. Overall a good, satisfying ending, but the sharp turn in characterization robbed it of some of the emotion.
11:4 The beginning was mostly good, but there were way too many times where Riordon quoted himself from only a few pages prior. He also gave way too detailed of foresight to a prequel character in order to spell out what we’ve already read, which is doubly silly given the redundancy. Things picked up considerably with the second portion which followed a fan favorite character many years before the series began. When we return to Amy and Dan for the final third, it feels back to normal in a good way. A good bridge between ending the first series and starting the next.

i dont think i could give a fair rating for this because i read it quite a while ago but i do remember reading the first few ones and were quite amazing but however i felt obligated to read the rest of them and it started feeling more like a chore than something exciting.

great book series for younger kids for sure !!
