I love this author and the idea of this book intrigued me. It would've been more enjoyable except for one unnecessary part. The first - Jack and Shelly have known and been in love since meeting in ninth grade. This means, I'm 99.99999% sure, they've only been with each other. To this day, they are deeply in love. When Jack's undercover identity is blown and he almost dies, he needs to assume a fake one to keep Shelly safe until those after him are taken down. To look like this "new" man, he needs to get a close to the scalp cut. Understandable. But not only did we not need to "see" this happen, but having it from the stylist's POV, reading how she loved the feel of his thick, black locks and her getting turned on!!!, going so far as to rub her freaking thighs together when she watched him leave and get on his motorcycle was gross and not needed in any way. For his part, he was there to get a haircut. He was polite, professional, and that's it. The stylist made it creepy. And for that, it tainted the rest of the story. Jack is all about Shelly and has been for a long time, has only been about her in fact, so why do that? Why include it at all? It was icky.
This book was weird. It actually peaked at 77% and the rest was just drivel. I love Sharon Sala but this book was just strange. He found her after her kidnapping, and buy arrested and the rest of the book was just filler. Seriously, I was like why is this book still going on? It was drivel. Just filling up pages and not even interesting. Just sad. It's like I have to fill 300 pages and I will but it isn't even pertinent to the story. It was anticlimactic and not interesting at all. Just sad. I read it but I will definitely never read it again. Or want to even. Just sad.
In Shadows is riveting, suspenseful, and in true Sharon Sala fashion, gripping. The love between Jack and Shelly shines through as they each go through the grief of nearly losing one another. Sharon Sala has always been my go-to-suspense author and this book just confirms why I read all her books. Never dull, always riveting, and a fast paced action thriller. I highly recommend this book to everyone who loves a great suspense wrapped in a love story.
IN SHADOWS-Sharon Sala Suspense, romance, a page turner. I have enjoyed Sharon Sala’s stories for many years whether she is writing as Dinah McCall or Sharon Sala. This was one of her more suspenseful novels and yet she was still able to focus on creating relatable characters. I was a bit nervous at first because (SPOILER ALERT) the hero and heroine weren’t together for the first half of the book but for the first few pages. However, once they were back together the relationship was very touching. I see this book in 2 parts, the first all suspense and the second part of healing, relationships with some suspense mixed in. The story is of a fed and his wife and what happens when a bust goes bad and he is discovered and shot. There are some great characters that help him in his recovery while he is hiding out. Great story with a twist at the end. Pay attention and Ms. Sala gives you a few clues along the way to the twist. Recommended for all lovers of Romantic Suspense.
Puikus romantinis trileris. Nuoširdi meilės istorija, susipynusi su detektyvo prieskoniu. Galvojau, bus banali meilės istorija. Bet nieko panašaus, taip įtraukė visi veikėjai, kad buvo sunku padėti knygą.
It starts out with undercover FBI agent, Jack McCann sneaking home in the middle of an operation for a quickie with his wife, who obligingly opens her legs and says,
“Oh my God, oh my God.” Seconds later she was in her husband’s arms, returning kiss for kiss, pulling off his jacket as he removed his shoulder holster, unbuckling his belt so he could push the jeans down his legs.
Sala, Sharon. In Shadows . MIRA Books. Kindle Edition.
This is seconds after her house alarm sounds a warning that someone shut it off and a big, dark shadow of a man appears in the doorway. Now, I don’t know about you, but I would have freaked out and thrown a lamp at his head, at the very least.
The suspense amped up somewhat after this and there were a few page-flipping moments, but for me this book fell flat.
I give In Shadows three lovely kisses- Not her best.
Jack McCann married Shelley just out of college and ended up in the FBI. He is on an undercover mission when his cover is blown and he ends up in in the ocean, shot. He is rescued but it is necessary to let everyone think he is dead until he finds out who betrayed him. He fears his job may have put his wife in danger.
Lots of interesting characters, including the guys who rescued Jack. The baddies were bad and the goodies good. (lol) I enjoyed the story a lot. Fans of Sharon Sala should enjoy this one.
This was a really good book. It was so hard to put down. I really hate Shelly had to go through what she went through. I wish there was a little more to the ending. Would love to say what but don’t want to spoil it. If this was going to become a movie, I’d watch it.
I enjoyed this romantic suspense with lots of fast paced exciting action. It showed a different stage of a relationship than the norm. I also liked the ending which was again different from the normal ending. Married couple Jack and Shelly have been in love since high school. Jack's cover is blown during his FBI assignment and he is shot while jumping out a window into the water.
FBI agent Jack McCann has been undercover for months and is ready to come in from the cold. Just when he thinks it will all come to an end it all goes wrong. An informant of Jacks shows up and blows his cover. Jack has to run for his life and is shot while trying to escape. He hears Adam Wu vowing to destroy Jack and everyone he loves. Jack has to let everyone think he is dead to protect his wife Shelly.
This book will draw you into the story from the first page. It is full of suspense and has a romance too. I had my suspicions about one of the characters, and I was right. I always enjoy a Sala book and this one doesn’t disappoint. I would give this book 4 1/2 stars. Thank you to net galley for an advanced readers copy.
I loved this story and it had the right amount of grit. It easily could have ended at about 70% of the way but Sharon went on describing the aftermath. For someone who loves a good epilogue, I loved the followup/resolution in the last part of the story.
This story starts with a quicky between Shelly and Jack. Then Jack goes back being undercover for FBI who's trying to stop a weapons-smuggling business. Something goes wrong and Jack’s cover is blown. Jack was shot and Shelly, his wife, thinks he is dead...
I must say that I hate when book's introduction gives away so much information about the plot (e.g. that Jack survived). Also with multiple POVs you get too much information. Thanks to this there's not much mystery or suspense. I found the story to be predictable and there were no real surprises. I guess that I've read too many psychological thrillers that make you wonder and want to find out what will happen next.
The idea behind this story is classic Sharon Sala, however the delivery was not. I'm a huge Sala fan, I've read almost everything she's published and given most of them 4 stars or better. This book however left me disappointed. It starts off on the right track, but a few chapters in it feels as if someone else took over the writing of the book. The sentences are short. There is very little detail and no sign of the usual suspense and drama that Mrs. Sala is known for. Gave it 2.5 stars.
A quick, enjoyable read. I wanted to know what happened and even though I found the story to be predictable and there were no real surprises. This was not the best book I've read this year, but I've been reading Sharon Sala for years now and will continue to do so.
Thank you #netgalley and #harlequinMIRA for the eARC.
I've read all of Sala’s books and had this one figured out in beginning of book and it was downhill and amateurish after that. Can't believe she wrote this. May have to get future books from library and not waste money.
In Shadows by Sharon Sala is one of the most intriguing dark suspense novels I have read. It held me at the edge of my seat all the way through. The risks were so high, I was not sure if the characters would make it to the ending. The mystery on whether the main protagonist had died or lived was well-done. The other characters did not know for sure until they saw or were told he had survived or not. A deadly crime gone haywire, led to FBI agent, Jack and his wife to danger. Neither one will be prepared for what has has happened. Nor did Jack suspect a traitor from his side of the law to betray him in such a way. Death loomed over the characters. Their struggles were realistic. I could not help but to feel like I was struggling alone with them. The scenes were vivid and sensual. I loved the connection between the husband and wife. A love that pulled through despite the dangerous situations, kept me cheering for them. The pacing was decent. It sped up more by the time Jack was thought to be dead or alive. He was seen to be shot and taken a deep fall into water. No body, meant there was a possibility but that also meant collateral damage for the crime family. Revenge is scary but when you cross the good guys, it takes it to a whole new level. Overall, I found this novel very interesting and recommend to all.
I received this copy from the publisher. This is my voluntary review.
Jack and Shelly McCann have been in love since they were teenagers. They married and soon after her became and FBI agent, not he is undercover and about to wrap up his last assignment as such but as luck would have it, he is betrayed and becomes a target for paybacks.
He pays with a bullet in the back and a near drowning. He survives but decides to stay dead in order to protect his beloved wife Shelly whom he has only seen here and there for the past four months of this assignment. He disappears but hovers near but not near enough to protect her as she becomes the victim of collateral damage.
Lots of twists and turns and plenty of action. Jack and Shelly's love story is touching and it brought tears to my eyes at times. I could almost feel the heartbreak through the pages as well as the love they have for each other.
Shelly is one hell of woman and a great character. Jack is as well. There are wonderful secondary characters as well and a big mastiff who is just a big teddy bear.
two brothers , from japan. grew up in a life of crime, A undercover agent who wants to keep his work out of his wife's way. I nark in the FBI working both sides, puts his so called best friend life in danger and it all escalated from that. A good page turner that keeps your nose in the book wanting to find out what happens next.
Sharon Sala fans can celebrate another terrific romantic suspense called In Shadows. Jack is an undercover FBI agent that is betrayed by someone in the FBI. In retaliation the kingpin he tried to take down kidnaps and tortures his wife Shelley. Now it’s up to Jack to find his wife before it’s too late.
This book hit the spot of romance and suspense that I expect from Sharon Sala. I was really caught up in the story and actually winced at some of the graphic scenes. Sala really paints a vivid picture with her writing. I highly recommend this book to all fans of romantic suspense. If you have a few hours to spend curled up with a book, In Shadows, will not disappoint!
I have read Sharon Sala for years and she has been moving into the psychological suspense for the last few years. They are well written and they keep a little romance but the stories are getting a little dark for my preference. Jack and Shelley are the main characters and they don't spend a lot of time together in this book. The romance takes a back seat to the suspense. The pace is fast and a little predictable. Her Blessings, Ga. series is one of my favorites where family and love are the core of the story. I received a copy of this ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.
This started off as a really good book. The plot was interesting. The characters and their interactions were believable. It was rolling along well. Then, after a major part in the story, it just turned. Considering there was a substantial amount of content left, I thought there was more good story ahead. Nope! It was extremely anticlimactic after that point. Then, there was one part that was spiritually driven?! That made no sense. All of the ending felt like it wasn’t event thought through nor was it given any attention. I was very disappointed with the last 1/3 or so.
I thought this book was okay--a quick read. The major problem I had with it was that the hero rescued the damsel in distress in chapter 13, and then there was another HUNDRED pages of wrap-up! I thought the bad guy was going to escape and cause more bedlam or he would turn out to have an accomplice who would attack them out of nowhere, but there was absolutely nothing else happening! I do like to have the loose ends tied up in a book, but this was a little ridiculous!

Read this when I separated my shoulder - grabbed it out of the hospital gift shop so I'd have something to keep me busy. It was an okay read but I got the feeling like Sala was just trying to fill it out enough to make it a decent size. The problem was resolved but the book went on for another 50 pages. I thought initially there was going to be a second attempt on Jack's life, but nope... it was all just follow up.
I'm normally a fan and usually her books are fairly clean, but this one was off from the first page. I regret the $1 I spent on the kindle version. It was on sale for a reason. I felt like the first half of the book was missing. No character development, no plot development, no groundwork. I knew from the start who the leak was from the beginning. Very lazy writing.
