Debra Webb co-wrote the worst book I've ever read (and I've read some stinkers), called Reluctant Hero. The other author was Regan Black. The two had been working together on a few books, and they were all largely terrible. However, if Webb did indeed write this one solo, it was a good move ditching the co-author, because this book is a significant improvement. Although the plot is no great shakes, the suspense is maintained throughout, the romance is done reasonably well, and the leads are likable.
Eva Bowman is a nurse who accidentally kills a gang member while the ER is being held hostage (and the gang member was attempting to rape Eva, in one of the more graphic sexual assault sequences I've encountered in category fiction, so trigger warning there.) This puts her in the sights of Miguel Robles, the dead gang member's older brother, who is the most notorious and difficult to catch gang leader ever in Chicago. When Eva goes to the Colby Agency for protection, her bodyguard turns out to be Todd Christian. They had an intense relationship ten years earlier, until he left her without a word.
The circumstances of their break-up was problematic for me and detracted somewhat from the book. Todd indeed did ditch Eva without warning and without explanation. He explains to Eva (in the present, that is, when she confronts him about it), that it was because he wasn't ready for the sort of commitment Eva deserved. Huh? Taking off without a single word? A bit dramatic, no? Todd is all, "Boo hoo I had a tough childhood in foster homes," but it doesn't go far enough in explaining why Todd couldn't have at least told Eva he was leaving, or heck, simply come up with a good cover story!!! His actions were melodramatic, and most disappointingly, VERY COWARDLY. I don't like my heroes to be cowards.
However, Todd and Eva managed to not make me roll my eyes too much in the lead up to the conversation they needed to have. Eva's actions in the circumstances were plausible. It would be very disorientating to be in very close quarters with the guy you never got over while constantly fearing for your life and the lives of those you are close to. Webb actually did a very good job of putting me in Eva's corner. I really did feel the anxiety and terror of her situation. The suspense of the story is mostly consistent as people get murdered by Miguel's gang in order to intimidate Eva. A complete opposite to the last book I read Sudden Setup which had no present threat at all!
Despite the solid suspense and Eva's well-drawn character, it doesn't quite reach the standard of a 4 star romantic suspense for me. While the plot is quite suspenseful, it could have done with a few more complications. And I'm not a fan of gang related romantic suspense, which I've said before many times. I felt some padding with a lot of description about what the h and H eat, and some unnecessary backstories about characters who have nothing to do with this story. And while Todd shows that he is worthy of being considered heroic now, I found it extremely difficult to get past how utterly cowardly he was ten years ago.
I'm glad to see Debra Webb put out a solid story. Hopefully she never teams up with Regan Black again.

Billed as a "sexier" version of Harlequin Intrigue. To be honest, I've read others just as steamy. I loved the story, though. I can't wait to discover what other secrets will be revealed in the next two books!

2.5*. Its been a while since I picked up an Intrigue or suspense in the hqn line, they are usually not my preferred read. This was pretty decent, while the romance didn't have great depth the suspense part of the book impressed me. It was well put together for such a short read.

Thank you for the ARC of Finding the Edge by Debra Webb that I read and reviewed.
I really enjoyed this book that was fast moving and was full of action from start to finish. When ER nurse Eva Bowman accidentally killed a gang leaders brother when he was trying to rape her in the restroom she was marked for death. She goes to the Colby Agency for help and her bodyguard is none other than her her first love Todd Christian who left her without a word with a broken heart in college.
Todd has his hands full keeping Eva alive and his hands off of her as he is protecting her from a man who is determined to get revenge for his younger brother and is leaving bodies in his wake. This is another great book by Debra Webb that will keep you in the edge of your seat until the end.
Finding the Edge gets five out of five stars.

Eva works in a high tech ER as a nurse.One night they ER is taken over by a bunch of gang members..she goes to the bathroom and when she starts to leave one of the thugs tries to rape her..In her fighting to get him away from her he breaks his neck....From than on she is threatened by the brother that she is going to be next...She goes to the Colby Agency(So good to read about old friends) and the bodyguard assigned to her is her great love Todd..She doesn't want his help but thank goodness he is there for her..People are dropping all around her...They are getting at everyone that she knows..When her sister is taken and she is drawn to her that is day everything changes...She figures out she has always loved Todd..and thanks to him her and her sister are safe...

Eva Bowman, RN, works in a prestigious Emergency Dept. She is on duty one night when a gang war breaks out and, the ER is inundated with multiple gang members who have been shot or stabbed. Problem is that many of the gang members are armed and, lock down the ER in order to have their friends cared for first. Thus she needs protection because he says she is going to die which brings in the Colby Agency and Agent Todd Christian. Eva and Todd have a history that is something they try to work around while trying to keep Eva alive.
Debra Webb has created characters who have you wringing your hands in frustration as they try to get past the hurt from 10 years ago. The twists and turns from the beginning to the end keep you from putting it down until the end.

I enjoyed this intriguing romance. I bought this at a local library sale and I voluntarily chose to review this story. I've given it a 4.5* rating. Because of the sexual contact and violence, this is not for the under 18 readers. The violent acts, kept the action going, and kept me turning the pages to find out what happens next. This story centers around a gang and the reuniting with a past love. While it has more sexual content than I care for, it's a solid story around topics that apply to the here and now. On to my next read.

Debra Webb’s Colby Agency series is long-running and definitely well-loved. Finding the Edge takes readers back to Chicago and a new batch of heroes and those who need to be protected by the Colby agency. Eva and Todd have a history which gives Webb more room to play with their scorching chemistry; this makes this book a little hotter than some of her other recent releases. Webb is one of my go-to authors and this book only continues that belief.

This is the first book in a series. When a group of gang members take over the ER Department where Eva Bowman works she sneaks away to send a text. One of the gang members follows her to the bathroom and tries to rape her. When she fights back she accidently kills him. She finds out after that the man is the brother to the leader of the gang who is set on killing her in retaliation. The one person that can keep her safe she is not sure she can trust but her life depends upon it.

Nurse Eva Bowman is caught in the middle of a Gang war and she is the target. She gets help from the Colby Agency for protection, but the one man the Agency assigns to protect her was the man who shattered her heart years ago. This was an enjoyable, fast read, with quite a bit of sizzle. I can't wait to read more in this series.

This was the first Harlequin Intrigue book I've read. I enjoyed it immensely. It had the right about of suspense and sexiness. Although there are some graphic sexual scenes, it isn't the main focus of the book. It is well written with great character development. I can't wait to read the next one.

Another fantastic book by Debra Webb. I absolutely enjoyed this book. I highly recommend to anyone who is a fan of Debra or a fan of the Colby Agency series to read this book. I can't wait for books 2 and 3.

I discovered Debra Webb's Colby series by accident in a secondhand store and fell in love with the series. So I love finding her books to read and she never disappoints me. I got to meet Todd Christian who has had no sense of family because he had been in the foster care system from an early age. Then we meet Eva Bowman who has had family. Eva's life is on the line because she works in a leading edge emergency room that had been under siege and a gang leader's brother died. She is being blamed for it. Enter Colby agency & Todd. They have a history will he be allowed? You need to read to find out. Its an awesome story filled with action and second guessing as to what will happen next. I love the way the story is written for it has a little darkness in it with the way the gang is and how they operate. Its a great story and Debra weaves a it well. You can see how Eva hurts from the way Todd left. She has some issues which she works her way thru as the story goes. Todd never felt worthy of Eva and that you see at the beginning and how they both end up working on it towards the end. Who said love is easy. I love how you want to turn the page to find out what's happening next. Its a great book and worth a read.

June 4, 2018I have always loved the Colby Agency books, the way Victoria heads the company she is not afraid to get her hands dirty. She and her husband Lucas are right in there with there staff . People should learn also be aware that they should not try to harm her family as she is great with a gun. Another excellent book.
